6:00 PM
ouch :(

alright, I definitely need to change my thermal paste, going out to buy it today if I've the time
had some 80 degrees peaks with nothing but firefox open
quick peaks though, but still

The worst part is, I didn't realize I'd done it until I had reinstalled Ubuntu and started reinstalling all my software in the new reinstall :(

@RPiAwesomeness if you did quick formatting there's still hope!

well make just sure you dont do write operations to the drive until you got all recovered whats possible

@Videonauth I shut down as soon as I realized it
It's "recovered" a crap ton of PNGs, and like 25 JPGs...which is not good

6:08 PM
you have a second machine where you could connect the drive to ?

Oh wait, that JPG just jumped...there's hope
I'm booted into a liveCD

well seem you got it covered :) holler if you need help to
@ThomasWard do you have a copy of kali actually running somehwere ?

@Videonauth Yeah, why?
probably out of date as all heck, but it's running.
(a VM on my ESXi infrastructure)

can you please run uniscan short and see if theres a link in the help output

when i'm home, yes
my VPN's offline right now

6:11 PM
okies, no rush

@Videonauth you might have to remind me in a couple hours :P

just have a hard time googling for a source location for uniscan

@RPiAwesomeness if it makes you feel any better, I've done this before too.

i get all kinds of dubious locations

6:12 PM
@AndroidDev what about it?

It wasn't 50 GB but it was other family member's files.

@ThomasWard Is a name like that allowed per SE policy?

@AndroidDev There's nothing against a name like that being used.

it is not even that bad
i have seen worse

^ same
@AndroidDev consider the multitude of far more offensive names that you could come up with, and that's not really "bad"
but no, there's nothing in the policies explicitly not permitting that name.

6:15 PM
One guy complained about a username of "leprosy"...
So there's that.

lol

@ThomasWard True. Just wanted to make sure :)

That is my IRL name...

@ThomasWard well it has a typo :+)

It was either that or Throat Cancer...my parents couldn't decide at first

6:16 PM
I've seen a hitler on some stack site :P

well, for me as a german someone naming himself hitler is a touchy subject

@NathanOsman But the worst part is, I needed a bunch of those pictures for my 4H group

TBH if the name was something along the lines of extremely racist or so horribly offensive it would cause major controversy that might be a problem. But "god dam it" is not inherently offensive enough to give me pause or any real concern.

I could care less about my personal pics

oh good news: the EU is going to make it illegal to use geo-blocking in the EU
4

6:19 PM
Well crap. It looks like it didn't recover a single one of my pictures.

@Rinzwind that's good news?
I mean geo-blocking is stupid but banning it...?

@NathanOsman yes means you can watch netflix anywhere and not just in your own country

@Rinzwind And how exactly are they going to enforce that? And plus, if it's my webserver/VPS, I should be able to do what I want with it.

@AndroidDev no no

@Rinzwind And why not?

6:21 PM
It has to do with PAID services. If you pay you are allowed to use the service ANYWHERE
so netflix, spotify to name 2

@Rinzwind Ooooooooohhhhh.. I catch your drift now.

on the other side: we are also no longer allowed to open a service in another country :D
so if netflix is cheaper elsewhere ... to bad :+)

@Rinzwind I say leave it how it is. You can VPN if you need to :)
Can anybody shed some light on this?

Q: After installing Ubuntu 16.04 with the "erase disk" option three partitions show

Ghosts in my machineAs the tile says, I did a fresh install from a USB (LiveRecoveryCD). Now my system boots up with three mounted volumes (499 Mb, 10Gb, 10 Gb). Is this an issue? I did not create them when installing. Whenever booting up I get a "System error prompt" but everything seems to work alright. However I ...

Seriously, why didn't I check that before I reinstalled

@RPiAwesomeness Check what?

6:24 PM
25 mins ago, by RPi Awesomeness
Just reinstalled my laptop...and forgot I had like 50GB of pictures on there

@RPiAwesomeness what about memory cards that would have been used to take the pictures?

@Rinzwind quit trying to cheat the system :-P

@NathanOsman The pictures I really need were taken back in July/August

@Rinzwind quit trying to cheat the system :-P

I backed up various configs, a bunch of my music, code, but I was so dumb as to not back up my pictures.

6:26 PM
:(

And THAT is why you should always have three rotating backups of your entire HDD.

@RPiAwesomeness so the cards would have been overwritten since then?

@AndroidDev and 1 stored off site...

@NathanOsman Definitely have been

bbl

@AndroidDev Well, I shouldn't have been importing them to my laptop in the first place
Let alone keeping them there without backups

6:27 PM
:(

@TheXed Yes, but not in the cloud. I don't trust my data to the internet. If it was encrypted, maybe... but still.

By off site I mean a NAS stored in another building...

@TheXed Or in the safe deposit box at the bank.

I have an external HDD...I just didn't use it

@AndroidDev the problem with that is you don't have 24 hour access to it...
@AndroidDev unless they are giving you access to their network, which I highly doubt...

6:29 PM
@RPiAwesomeness I highly recommend Deja Dup.

@TheXed But I would never want my backup drive connected to the internet.

Or if you trust your friends :-P

@TheXed Or you could ask them they'll keep a 2.5" HDD for you.

@AndroidDev only if it is encrypted...
and their houses don't have a habit of catching on fire...

@Videonauth the only link is to the sourceforge site that says "Uniscan PRO is coming"
nothing else

6:35 PM
wlell i pulled it straigt from the kali git now

man, I think I'll have to buy the thermal paste online, meaning my notebook will have to survive until about 10 days from now

but still it wont run so i guess i have to fiddle a bit

@TheXed There's always LUKS.

What is LUKS?
@IanC I have thermal paste...where do you live?

In computing, the Linux Unified Key Setup or LUKS is a disk encryption specification created by Clemens Fruhwirth in 2004 and originally intended for Linux. While most disk encryption software implements different and incompatible, undocumented formats, LUKS specifies a platform-independent standard on-disk format for use in various tools. This not only facilitates compatibility and interoperability among different programs, but also assures that they all implement password management in a secure and documented manner. The reference implementation for LUKS operates on Linux and is based on ...

beat you to it lol

@AndroidDev hmmm I have never heard of LUKS

in Brazil @TheXed, I'm already waiting besides the mailbox!

@TheXed Really? I thought you did full disk encryption.

@IanC nope, not driving across the country to a boat to sail across the ocean to deliver some thermal paste for you. Sorry...

6:39 PM
I think this question is Off topic.. askubuntu.com/questions/855048/…

@AndroidDev I did, is that what it is?

@TheXed in those moments we see who are the real friends..

@TheXed LUKS is a method of FDE. But definitely not the only method.

@AndroidDev I see...
@IanC sorry I like you...but that is a bit much...

Thank you.

6:41 PM
@jokerdino I leave closing/migration to you, i merely voiced my opinion

@ThomasWard I am not too sure about it really. But it does feel very opinion-based.

I was going to close it as broad or opinion based, though it probably is better answerable on SU regardless.

@IanC how is the bike fairing at the mechanics?

@jokerdino Comment expanded a little too
I think the question of VM performance of Windows is better suited for SuperUser, rather than Ask Ubuntu. The only thing that Ubuntu appears to have to do with it is that you want to create the VM on an Ubuntu host running VirtualBox. The performance factor of VMs is also highly opinion based, because what is 'good performance' for someone is not 'good performance' for another. — Thomas Ward ♦ 4 mins ago

well, they called me! Just to inform I have to pay some more money to change some small piece in the brake @TheXed :p
at least I think I can pick the motorcycle today

6:45 PM
@ThomasWard Better!

@IanC scandolus...
Maybe you can convince them to throw in a tube of thermal paste in with the price...
Of course they probably don't know what that is...

lol
5

but that is beside the point...

they could give me some car wax
should I try it on the CPU?

@IanC I have heard toothpaste is sometimes effective
However something tells me car was is not a suitable substitute...

6:47 PM
@jokerdino Also closed for opinion-based as the reason. That said they may still want to ask a more specific question on Super User: "Does MSSQL 2008R2 behave better in a VM running on an Ubuntu host, or in a Dual Boot hard disk installation with Windows?'" and the answer is always going to be "Dual boot is better." because hard disk performance factors, etc.

@IanC toothpaste has a nice side effect of smelling minty too...

I heard toothpaste is good for scratched CDs/DVDs, never managed to recover one with it though.. Maybe because I'd only dare to use it on a CD if it was reaally scratched @TheXed

that's still offtopic here though

@TheXed so if your computer is about to get fried you will have that refreshing smell of mint!

You are right I think.. but the people on SU don't seem really interested in the topic. Having a little chat in their chat room.

6:48 PM
as some last memories of it

Not sure what burnt mint smells like honestly...

a common misspelling, @Terrance

:D

6:50 PM
Heading to bed now :) Good night.

@jokerdino lies you are bound to here for all eternity and to awakeness as such

are Ubuntu Satanic edition questions on topic here?

hail the dark power that is Ask Ubuntu muahahahahah

LOL

@IanC there is such a version?

6:51 PM
so I've heard :p @ThomasWard

should probably cut back on coffee intake

@TheXed I'll check it out, but I don't doubt toothpaste mixed with something could work as thermal paste, at the end all it has to do is be a great heat conductor!

@ThomasWard not neccesary..
@IanC no they are not.

@TheXed actually, medically necessary
new anti-anxiety med, makes my blood pressure a little on the higher end

@IanC heat conducter yes, but at the same time you don't want it to be a insulator...
@ThomasWard they are lying to you.

6:53 PM
puts the toothpaste back in the bathroom

and with my normal coffee intake, that'll skyrocket my blood pressure too high
@TheXed Already have the numerical evidence.

@ThomasWard you can ignore it...

looks at fifteen doctors telling him the same thing, then back to @TheXed, and decides to listen to his doctors and his sister who is also saying the same thing while in med school

(I am not a doctor and do not take my suggestions as medical advice) :-P

@TheXed the best person to listen to
is my psychiatrist. and my sister, the doctor-in-training. :P

6:55 PM
I can be your psychiatrist...just not a trained professional licensed one...
but I can sit here and listen to you and pretend like I am taking nots on a legal pad every now and again.

drops @TheXed into /dev/urandom

oh wait that is therapist...

i've got two of those too :P

I charge less...

they don't charge me at all.

6:57 PM
infact I charge nothing...all you have to do is take measure to upkeep the usual coffee levels...

@TheXed so then $8 - $15 then is the rate.
whereas I can just pay $0 total and be fine

Actually I lie, ignore everything I have ever said to you in the last 5 mins...
or 10...however long this conversation was.

30.

I will be self destructing in 30 mins.

goes back to churning through flags queue

7:03 PM
@ThomasWard @IanC however the toothpaste part was not a lie...
but everything else was.

So apparently all my excitement for LTE is all for naught.
It's AWS-3 band 66 which my phone doesn't do.
In fact, the only phone that does is the LG v20.

what's this?

My carrier is rolling out LTE.
But on a band my phone doesn't support.

ouch

Yeah, and it's a brand new phone.
Such is life.

7:16 PM
cool cyber monday has triggered weeklong savings on Amazon
niceeee

@NathanOsman You have the OP3, right?

7:29 PM
LOL:

Q: The death of Ubuntu. Integration with Windows 10.

Max007everyone. I currently use Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. I love this OS and use it most of the time for web development. I hear that Microsoft integrated Ubuntu into Windows 10. Does that mean the death of Ubuntu? Let me know. If so, I need to install other Linux Distro, because I will never consider using ...

oh and another "the sky is falling" question ???
:D

@NathanOsman you don't have LTE yet?

o/ @Seth

@Seth not on my carrier.
They're rolling it out as we speak.
@AndroidDev yes.

@Seth can you give a better answer than my answer on this?

7:37 PM
@NathanOsman as what you mean is you're on an MVNO and you don't have access to the LTE of the parent network, or there is literally no LTE towers?
@ThomasWard hi!
@ThomasWard I'll give it a shot.

@Seth shouldn't be too hard, I just am not 100% sure my (now deleted) answer is (was) accurate

@Seth I don't think they have the towers.
Well, they're building them anyway

Wow.
ok @ThomasWard?

@Seth yep :)
+1'd

Q: "Not a real question" close reason?

Android DevWas the "Not a real question" close reason: Replaced with "Unclear what you're asking"?

7:45 PM
@AskUbuntuMeta you're late to this.
so shush

@ThomasWard Hahaha :)

Hi
@ThomasWard so is it the coffee that is the problem or the caffiene in the coffee?

8:04 PM
"A C program is like a fast dance on a newly waxed dance floor by people carrying razors." – Waldi Ravens.

8:18 PM
Waaaat.
Cities: Skylines update is available. 1.6 GB.
This is Apple all over again.
Did they really change 1.6 GB worth of files?

@NathanOsman probably not...but it is more fun this way

Yeah, Mr. 25 Mbps.
:P

Anybody want to help me troubleshoot a script ? OP said they've set it up, but it didn't run

raises hand

@NathanOsman 50Mbps

8:24 PM
So apparently AMD does have an equivalent to Nvidia's ShadowPlay.

I'm back, could pick up my motorcycle today, rain didn't stop me

@Serg hoping it's not Unity-specific :)

^_^'' actually it is . . .

I need a new Graphics card...
what should i buy?

@Serg aww

8:26 PM
@TheXed I'd be tempted to spring for an AMD card.
They have a good future in terms of compatibility.

what kind though?
I don't know much about them...

Well, depends on your budget.

has someone else had this issue with Network-Manager:
-You connect to a WiFi router and the connection is saved with the password
-You can connect to it by just clicking on the name without giving the password again
-Then suddenly, the same ESSID/BSSID asks for a password though you have it saved and you have to create another connection

I just need one that is going to let me play all my games on high...

I bought the R9 270X a couple years ago for $250.

8:27 PM
@NathanOsman I am rich I have no budget... well maybe I should ask my wife first...

I've heard good things about the 390X.

Actually I am not rich, I just wish I was...

@TheXed Guess what I got in the mail yesterday? A bill for $450 for calling 911 and having paramedics out.
I now feel like I used to be rich :D

@NathanOsman that is BS...

That is expensive.

8:29 PM
@IanC yes, used to happen a lot with my WiFi back when I had 14.04

Glorified taxi service...

@Serg any clue why? Maybe network-manager trolling us? :p

@TheXed Hey, and I didn't even ride in it.
That was just for them coming out.

I don't know, my wife told me how much money we had in our checking account...I was like "maybe we should pay off the new car or move it to our savings or something"

I've not found a reason for that, the only guess I have is that DHCP lease fails to renew. You can try getting rid of dnsmasq and just using dhclient that comes with Ubuntu, but that's just a wild guess

8:30 PM
I was like it feels wrong to have that much money in our checking account...

Also , Europe, WTF is going on with your surveillance bull ?

Why are graphics cards so damn expensive?
I can buy a whole damn console for some of these prices...

@Serg weird is that it takes no time before asking for a password, not sure if there would be time to fail on the DHCP request (maybe he considers some previous fail as some discard signal for the connection?)
well, it's just a bit annoyance, so no problem

@IanC like I said, I don't know 100% what is happening.
Network Manager is one of those pieces of software that seems to run on magic and unicorns

@Serg you must have released the magic powder...

8:35 PM
@TheXed Magic powder ? Sorry, I dont do cocaine :)

no...
my bad magic smoke

Hehe, that's closer to it
@TheXed that video hurts my brain cells, or at least those that remain in my brain so far

lol

I mean . . . just give that goddamn iPad to a child in 3rd world country . . .they could use it to study, for chrissake . . .

8:47 PM
Did I mention that USB adapters are amazing ?

@Serg Depends on what you are adapting...

@TheXed yeah, but the amount of different devices that can be used with USB is just amazing. Mice, ethernet adapters, video adapters, WiFi adapters - it's just mind blowing
And development boards
We were using serial connection (UART) with PIC18 development board and guess how we were connecting it to PC ? via USB of course.

The "U" in "USB" stands for "universal".
So it sounds like it is living up to its name :D

yeah, but as I've learned B doesn't
USB isn't really a bus structure

9:03 PM
@Serg Don't forget those nice USB devices that contain a large capacitor which they discharge all at once into your precious USB port that used not to be fried...

@ByteCommander well, in accordance with human nature, we always can come up with something malicious

9:21 PM
getting used to new glasses is pain in the butt . . . but more so in the eyes

Yup. This is true.
@ByteCommander optical isolation FTW.

Also don't forget juice jagging attacks if you dare to charge your phone etc without condom.

Do I want to Google that phrase...?
Is that where you connect a trusted device to an untrusted USB port for charging?

You think it's only charging, but actually the charger is a computer that hacks your device through the data wires of the USB cable.

Those are pointless now. Android won't initiate any USB protocols when you connect it now without authorization.
And if that wasn't enough, I have a charging cable with the data wires removed.

9:28 PM
Only as long as nobody hacked it yet...

So there :P

@NathanOsman where'd you get?

@Seth Came with my Anker battery.
It's just a short one. About 15-18cm at the most.
But you could connect it to a USB extension cable easily.

Did any of you earn a Hacktoberfest Tshirt this year btw?

I did.
And no, it hasn't arrived yet.

9:31 PM
^ my question.

mine neither.
The confirmation mail said shipping starts early to mid November.
getting impatient

Let's assume mid November. Add a couple weeks because post office and you end up in this week.
So if it doesn't come by Friday, then you can start worrying.

From where are they shipping btw, do you know?

No idea. If I had to guess, SF maybe?

9:33 PM
SF?

San Francisco, CA.

Ah.
Well, if we add the time to travel from there to Germany...
Maybe I'll get it for Christmas... :P

Yeah, if I were you I wouldn't even start to worry until after mine came.
...since it's a shorter distance.

I really hope shipping is free as well and the postman doesn't wave with a bill when they'll finally arrive.

9:36 PM
@ByteCommander I've never had that problem with them.
(And I have had it with others a long time ago.)

@NathanOsman hm, I have an Anker battery with a cable too. Si there's no data wire?

@Seth If it's the same one...
You could pull up "dmesg -w", plug your phone in with the cable, and see if the system detects it.

Hello, I have a question about .deb packages ... not sure if its a question for ubuntu.se or security.se ...

I was feeling some shocks on my shoulder, guess it was working as a ground to my notebook on my belly

9:44 PM
a fellow developer has made a .deb package and said that it is encrypted yet the machine that is reading it doesnt have the private key used to encrypt it
he said he used the Debian defaults for the process ... how is the package being decrypted?

@Videonauth the answer is around 2 years. I've been around on AskUbuntu for about 2 and now have pretty nice junior sysadmin level beard

@CaffeineAddiction I've never heard of encrypted DEB packages.
Did he use GPG?

@Serg well i could sit 100 years and wouldnt grow a beard thou

@NathanOsman yes GPG is being used ... i know the package is being signed ... but he said it is also encrypted
if i go into the client machine that is installing the package and do gpg --list-keys i have a pub, uid, sub
pub key is obvious ... can be used for verifying sig ... according to gpg docs sub key is used for encryption
is that a priv key?

I would assume so.

9:50 PM
maybe I should ask in gpg's irc
ty for your thoughts

No worries.
Sorry I couldn't help more :(

np, this whole thing is a mess ... and im just starting to unwind it

@chili555 - Here's a super high-quality post for you: askubuntu.com/q/855130/518562

10:08 PM
@AndroidDev Studying it now...

10:29 PM
@Zanna I did see your comment. As the original post was about 2 1/2 years old, I doubt that the poster is still around. I also doubt that my answer would be the same today.

@chili555 indeed :) just trying to clean up... if you don't have anything to add, I will consider the problem further myself. Ideally, I will end up upvoting the answer. If I can't, possibly we will see if the question should be closed

> "Starting in the 2009 model year, General Motors began equipping some new vehicles with Stolen Vehicle Slowdown. This feature allows OnStar to remotely slow down the stolen vehicle."
Uh.............
That doesn't sound like a good thing.

At least they didn't make a remote ignition to blow up the fuel tank... yet
