hi there! I'm trying to do a list of pros and cons about changing job. which factors are important to take into acount?
I guess salary, conditions, location ... but what else?
both are so similar i cant decide :/

@lois6b The trouble it takes to go through the job process is an important "con" for a lot of people, as is the movement from a relatively "comfortable" current job to an unknown one.

im not comfortable in my current one but obviously i dont know if im gonna be in the other

I got a strong feeling that I might get answer to this question on workplace.se what would you say ?

Q: What practices to follow in software industry when recommending new technology trends to rest of team?

LearnerMy manager told me to do value & risk analysis when suggesting new technology trends to rest of team (for example like recommending using OOP instead of procedural for projects OR suggesting using EntityFramework instead of Table Adapters for data access layer). Is doing value and risk analysis ...

Well it might have a too broad part but it has definitively some parts answerable, either in workplace or even in programmers.se
@Learner : forgot to ping
@Learner For instance, if we consider that some practices/technologies come from the past and they aren't really what are teached to new developpers. You have risk to end up with difficulties to have people that will be able / want to fill those tasks
@Learner On the opposite, new technologies are by nature immature, and of course not so much people are really good at it
@LearnerTo resume : check you team skillset. If you ave some really good ones with new technologies, and those technologies fit for your needs, go on. Otherwise choose something that has been a bit more around (EntityFramework has been quite around engouh) while still in the skillset that your team can handle
@Learner This is just a start of an answer, you will probably get betters ones by askin a proper question, if you choose the workplace, i suggest you to set the "IT technologies trend" thing as a background of what is happening and put in foreground your need about how to asset the risks between old practices/technologies and the new ones

@Learner there are books that answer that question

@enderland it's true but i still think that it can have an answer there. I just remembered that i did a post about being an software architect here : workplace.stackexchange.com/a/78232/47387 what is said here is definitively interesting to asset those risks too
@Learner However evaluating the causes of eventual trouble about both side is in fact, pretty easy IMHO, however putting number, is wayyy harder possibly near impossible unless you have strong knowledge of what you're talking about and strong knowledge of how your team will be able to handle this.

Nothing quite like killing worthless edits

@RichardU sometimes it's amusing what edits get submitted

which one got killed?

Good morning & happy Monday everyone

@ChristopherEstep the latest one was about someone posing JAVA instead of Java. The most annoying was one of my answers being edited to make my responses gender neutral.

I approved that one, I understand being pedantic about such things.

2:33 PM
@ChristopherEstep Which one, the gender or the JAVA/Java?

java. I'd personally rollback any gender-neutral edits to my answers.

@ChristopherEstep I did when I saw that gender edit. I'll also kill anything that changes the author's intent, or changes only one or two words. esp if it's a low-rep user obviously doing it for a rep point.

Q: How to land church pianist/organist without personal connections and no published wanted postings?

Mickael CarusoI have been an organist for a church way back in high school. I landed that job because a friend of mine who was an organist at that church wanted to quit. After high school, we went our separate ways. (I am currently a software/web developer during the week and I would like to earn a little ext...

Poor question? Not sure, seems like a niche market
I also got an anonymous downvote for my answer; not sure what the issue is there.

I edited this a bit to clarify and make it more clearly on topic, it seems on topic to me. — enderland ♦ 2 mins ago

most downvotes are anonymous. you get used to it.

Yeah, c'est la vie

3:13 PM
@ChristopherEstep I am amazed at what gets up/down voted at times

3:42 PM
all the things

@enderland yeah, that about sums it up

I think that posts that have over a certain amount of rep (say, 25) should require a moderator to close. I find it hilarious that 5 people closed a q with 10 answers saying it requires a goal we can address.
not saying they shouldn't be closed but it'd be nice if high rep questions required a mod to say "yeah, that makes sense"

IIRC, the logic is that lots of people will try to answer a question even if it's a bad fit (whether from good intentions or chasing reputation), but I sort agree that if a question gets up votes and close votes then there's a discrepancy that a mod should probably look at.

Q: Changing Image on Workplace

Bilal AnjumBeing a fresh graduate who isn't quite proficient in office politics, I sometimes feel that my way of dealing with problems isn't quite famous at my workplace and two months into this position, I think my approach has already antagonized few key people. So it began with me working on some proble...

Glad to see someone taking the advice here in the right spirit. It is more common for the edits to such questions to carry a prima donna attitude, along with "you guys suck, I am the best", "this place is so hostile, screw it, I am out of here".

5:34 PM
Yeah, the way people respond to the advice really highlights whether or not they to move forward instead of just having their actions justified.

The answers to that question were diplomatic while being completely honest about OP's failing. Too bad it was closed, but the same thing has probably been asked ad nauseum.

How to land a specific type of job is generally off topic. — IDrinkandIKnowThings 2 hours ago
am I missing something about this?

7:04 PM
@MaskedMan I had that happen with a poster, until his question shot up from -4 to 25. Then he liked me.
@DoritoStyle You'll notice that those of us with higher reps tend to give more blunt answers. We can take massive downvotes without any noticeable damage.

¯_(ツ)_/¯ I guess it's pretty specific and maybe not generally useful.

"Why not kick someone when they're down? If you want them to get up I can think of no better way to make them"

7:21 PM
@enderland I don't think the close votes account for your edit, maybe editing to the title would help. Although at this point is it a lost cause?

@enderland I agree that the question should be on-topic. You've got a re-open vote from me.

@DoritoStyle it's never a lost cause on Stack Exchange

I've voted to reopen.

It's just as well; I really don't know when to quit ;)

It's actually a more common situation than people might think. Most "blue collar" jobs are still gotten by cold calling. A family member of mine is an aircraft mechanic, not one job he has ever gotten was listed in any sort of ad.
@enderland gratz by the way. Should we start referring to you a Legenderland?

7:33 PM
hah
more like "HNQ-land"
