12:13 AM
the new AirPort Utility is terrible
lots of removed functionality

iOS? or airport utility desktop app update?

desktop app

huh
what a shame
screenshots? details?

it's like the iOS version, but for the Mac

12:30 AM
I see.

this whole dumbing down/iOSification of Apple software is annoying and worrying

2 hours later…
2:08 AM
@Moshe Open Terminal, check out File -> New Remote Connection
@Brant long time!

@JasonSalaz Oooh, nice!

Considering that the windows users are using Putty, Terminal and optionally something like JellyfiSSH aren't half bad equivalents.

@JasonSalaz don't you mean Shell -> New Remote Connection ?

1 hour later…
3:34 AM
@JasonSalaz longest I've been without internet in years. Wonderful long weekend. But your message to me on Saturday was in the midst of my internet blackout from Friday PM until just now.

4:01 AM
@KyleCronin Yeah what'ev. The file menu is usually there. I wasn't actually looking at it when I wrote that (because I can't).
@Daniel Odd. I only sent it because I saw your comic-filtered face in the user list.

1 hour later…
5:13 AM
@JasonSalaz odd indeed. Best wishes, btw, in the election. I plan on voting for you over myself, but there's more than one seat open.

I voted for myself 3rd last time, and will likely again.
I don't recall who I voted for ahead of me.
@Daniel damn. Thanks for the link at the start of your introduction.

5:42 AM
I go away for three days and my review tab is full of not-an-answer candidates just waiting to be flagged.

I need to get on those reviews.

6:00 AM
So @bmike, are you going to nominate yourself as a mod?

10 hours later…
3:54 PM
@daviesgeek most likely...

1 hour later…
5:23 PM
the list of candidates is already pretty stacked, and they allow up to 10 without a primary. sheesh.

@bmike Good
@JasonSalaz 10! That's crazy!

5:53 PM
@daviesgeek up to ten candidates can go into the final round, so there's only a primary if there are more than 10 candidates. If there are more than 30 nominations, the 30 candidates with the highest reputation get in to the primary.
@KyleCronin can moderators flag posts?

@Daniel And now you see what went through my head when I wrote the last line of my nomination post :).

6:32 PM
Can anybody provide some feedback regarding the quality of this edit: apple.stackexchange.com/posts/38869/revisions
I'm a bit mixed about it. I think it's for the better but I have this nagging feeling that something's a bit wrong.
@Brant I still chuckle every time I see your icon. Because despite knowing exactly what it is now, it still reminds me of this:
holy cow I can't believe that worked.
SE Chat uses a really really bad parser :/. Both for Markdown and HTML.

@JasonSalaz I think that's right....from what I remember 'bout formulas
@Daniel Ah, ok...
@Daniel no
'cuz they take care of the flags

@daviesgeek How do you know?
just because they take care of them doesn't mean we know if the flag link disappeared from posts/comments.
I agree that they shouldn't be able to, but we're generally curious is all.

@JasonSalaz Yeah, actually as I just said that, I realized that the flag link could still be there.
So, never mind what I said @Daniel.

7:02 PM
@JasonSalaz yes exactly about the badge, but also I wondered whether mods could flag something that they thought was off, but weren't sure enough to act on themselves, but wanted to get another mod to take a second look at, or if once you're in as a mod, you just need to have good judgement and be decisive. I'm okay with either, but wanted to know (from an actual mod) how it works.
And @daviesgeek that's why I directed the message to Kyle. Unless you're really a secret identity of Kyle's. Which is possible, I suppose. I mean Kyle posts awfully late to really be on the east coast. Maybe you and he are really the same person :-)

Don't be surprised. He's just a vampire, that's all.

7:18 PM
@Daniel :-)
Sorry, I assumed, which is never good......

Q: Are there alternate OSes for the click-wheel iPods?

daviesgeekThe firmware on the click-wheel iPod is very simple and doesn't have a lot of "extra" features. It also doesn't allow you to drop music on it; it has to go through iTunes. Are there alternate OSes for the click-wheel iPods?

Why did I get a downvote?
That's a perfectly legitimate question!!!
That's better...one upvote
@JasonSalaz Yes, that's absolutely right!!! ;-)
So now, I know what happens when I remove an upvote!
I've always wondered.

7:49 PM
@Daniel yes, mods can flag posts and get flag weight, but there isn't a point because we can just take direct action
also, if we flag something as offensive, it takes action immediately
@Daniel my sleep schedule is ruining my life

@KyleCronin so you're admitting that Daviesgeek is really your secret identity :-)
Oh, wait, you said nothing of the sort.

all I'm saying is that you're right and I completely agree that I post awfully late for someone on the east coast, and that it's a symptom of my messed-up sleep schedule
that I seem powerless to change

I've got to change the staying up until 1:30 and then getting up at 6 part. It's great for responding to suggested edits, but lousy for staying healthy.

8:10 PM
"Weather Offline" well that's not very nice.
@KyleCronin Flag Weight doesn't exist anymore.

@JasonSalaz it still exists, but users can't see it anymore

Sneaky

(mods can't either, by the way, but it does still exist)

Doubley-sneaky.

9:11 PM
@KyleCronin So it's still calculated and maintained in a database, but the badges and publicly linked data is just the sum total of the helpful flags?

9:24 PM
that would be the implicit answer

evening gents

howdy

woooo I hit 1k today - never thought that would have been on the cards 21 days ago

I'm looking forward to my 2k, hopefully any second...

hehe you've got at least 30 from me today

9:33 PM
I often wonder where they come from :)

9:55 PM
Boom :) I can now edit questions - FINALLY

@stuffe congrats

10:09 PM
and I just got the perfect opportunity to try it out :)

@bmike that would be my guess. Like I said, even mods don't see the flag weight, so I can't say for sure, but according to Jeff it's still there

@stuffe boom - congratulations
nice answer on the 85 watt adapter - BTW

A: 85W MagSafe adapter only delivers 77W?

stuffeWhen measuring the usage of power adapters, it is important to keep in mind the efficiency of the PSU when making calculations. For PC builders, it's important to ensure that you choose a suitable PSU for the components you intend to use, to ensure it's big enough etc. As such the rated capacit...

Cheers, it's something I wrestled with recently, explaining to a 13 year old why the £90 90% efficient PSU would save money over the £50 80% efficient one...

huh, I wonder why Wheat's nomination post has ?as=1 on the end of the link to Music.SE.

10:24 PM
yeah, don't think I've seen a link like that before

10:42 PM
I asked a meta question about it 'cuz I was curious

why didn't you just ask Wheat where he got the link from?

I want to know its purpose
It is from the drop down menu
He copied the link from there, then pasted it.
The question still remains: What does it do?

jrg
@daviesgeek 3K!!! Congrats are in order!

@jrg Thank you!
And good luck on your moderator election!

jrg
@daviesgeek you're welcome! I remember when I hit 3K. Since then I haven't stopped voting to close.... unfortunately. :(
thanks. i'm more than a little uh, shall we say, nervous about that. ;)

10:47 PM
Oddly enough, I've only voted twice
Neither of which questions were actually closed

jrg
wait for it, it'll come.

@jrg Yeah, I was considering nominating myself here, but I don't quite have enough time, yet

@jrg Close votes aren't scary. Unless you are a moderator it's not binding.

Yup, it will

Several other people need to agree. All it does is freeze the question so it can be improved in some way before being reopened.

10:48 PM
That's true @bmike

jrg
@bmike I'm a little nervous about the election - i've had close votes since like, june.

Furthermore, if no-one else votes, your close vote expires in a short amount of time.

jrg
@daviesgeek to answer your question about that link, i don't think it does anything.

@jrg Are we talking about closing question votes or close votes where a very few votes are close in quantity? (silly english homographs)

@jrg It actually does

A: Why does this URL have "?as=1" at the end of it?

MartinActually, Kevin is correct. It's just to let Stack Exchange's staff know how are things going. All sites in the dropdown menu have ?as=1 appended and all hot questions' links have got ?hq=1 appended

It's an Analytics type thing
Just to track who's coming from the drop-down menu
@bmike Closing question votes

jrg
10:55 PM
@daviesgeek interesting.
would not have guessed that.

Yeah, neither would I.

jrg
although it does make sense.

Yup
It's a good way for tracking

A: Why does this URL have "?as=1" at the end of it?

Kevin MontroseWe slap slugs onto links in places where we're looking for hard numbers about usage. Click through rates, visitors per share, that sort of thing. It's a decidedly low tech approach that has a couple of benefits. No slow down we're just querying our server logs for data, clients aren't execut...

An even better answer
From an SE associate!
