Q: How do I make login screen appear after plymouth has finished?

northern-bradleyFirstly I am running Kubuntu 16.04 and whilst I know there is an "Ask Ubuntu" instance of SE I suspect this might not be something purely for the Ubunutu family and therefore of more benefit to the wider Linux world. If I was completely wrong in this please feel free to move it to "Ask Ubuntu". ...

is there anybody
whats your idea about manjaro @NathanOsman
speed is important for me

7:46 PM
@NathanOsman as in brand, or metal?

I'm still in doubt
which distribute to use. some of my friend insist on me to use manjaro because i am a developer and no need to download most of the app. i am completely new to linux

8:05 PM
never used manjaro, but if you are completely new to linux Ubuntu is a beginner friendly distro

8:47 PM
Is @NathanOsman stalking this room?

man, I need to find a really light distro to make my virtual network
running 2 kali linux in virtual machines plus my own desktop distro isn't really fast, specially when you only have 4gb ram
I needed a really light distro, with the basic functionality + wireshark support (since the whole point is to study networks)

iWakeUp
morning

good evening lol

lol
i'm learning python

cool, is it easy to learn?

9:00 PM
i don't think so
i already know a little C

O_O
boomtech.dll

I wonder why python is so famous in linux world

me neither

9:22 PM
@CodeX can you do ls -l ~/.dbus and tell me what it says?

@IanC how about Vagrant + Xfce4?

@edwinksl sudo ls -l ~/.dbus

total 4
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Jul 21 04:43 session-bus

is your ~/.dbus owned by root?

@grooveplex
Vagrant is way lighter than virtual box?
I'll download Xfce4 and create a VM to test it :)

yes

9:24 PM
that is odd
same here but that shouldn't happen

what is dbus for ?
between I installed guake today and that installed some other packages python packages ..including some buses and cars xD

i don't really have a good summary myself, so you can read about it at freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/dbus

oh thanks

@grooveplex
Oh, just realized, Xfce4 is the desktop environment, like GNOME or lightdm?

in any case, ~ shouldn't have anything owned by root, so i am not sure why .dbus is owned by root

9:27 PM
imma boot debian

Q: Preparing a Ubuntu install for sharing

Tyler HilbertI have a virtual version of Ubuntu running in VirtualBox. Currently I have lots of personal information in it. I want to share the virtual image disk with other developers, but I don't want them to be able to get all my personal info. What should I make sure to delete before distributing this vm ...

@CodeX i already read that; it doesn't explain how .dbus got owned by root in the first place

oh

not much use to say .dbus is supposed to be owned by user, which i already know

9:33 PM
@CodeX @edwinksl
what is the .dbus folder for?

i don't really know
but there is a file in it which you can read with sudo privileges
@IanC is your ~/.dbus owned by root too?

let me see
yeah, owned by root

can you do ll ~ | grep root? i am curious about the dates

lanC's system crashed it seems xD

root    root    4096 Jul 21 20:28 .dbus/
sorry, I took a while to see the msg haha

9:42 PM
lan stands for Local area network ?

pretty it is an i not l

internal area network
it's an 'i' :p

maybe I should change my font xD

on mine upper i is the same as low l, guess I should change mine too haha
I l

xD

9:51 PM
i'm in debian

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD can you do ls -dl ~/.dbus?

Phew im lagging so much
@edwinksl im in the installer. I will try later

10:10 PM
yaaaaaawn. Hi guys. How's it going ?

@Serg i need your help

yes ?
how can i help ?

do ls -dl ~/.dbus and let me know what it says

$ ls -ld ~/.dbus
drwx------ 3 xieerqi xieerqi 4096 Aug 15  2015 /home/xieerqi/.dbus/

not sure why mine says root though xD
ls -dl ~/.dbus
drwx------ 3 root root 4096 Jun  9 19:38 /home/edwinksl/.dbus

10:14 PM
IIRC , that folder must be owned by your user. Owned by root folder means you did something that changed its ownership, like run a gui command with sudo maybe ?

i don't recall ever doing that

ok I'm in Debian

but let's suppose i did, what GUI app creates a config directory in .dbus? sounds odd

(not the installer!)
@edwinksl what did you want me to do ?

I used gedit as root
maybe thats it?

10:16 PM
Here is one issue that could happen askubuntu.com/q/135573/295286

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD run ls -dl ~/.dbus

okay
debian@devian:~$ ls -dl ~/ .dbus
ls: cannot access .dbus: No such file or directory
drwxr-xr-x 19 debian debian 4096 Jul 22 22:17 /home/debian/

fresh install, probably didn't create the directory yet

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD there shouldn't be a space between / and .

10:19 PM
screw you Windows
oh

remove the space and try again

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD find $HOME/.dbus -ls
do that

@Serg anyway i was wondering if this is related to OP's problems with using your power indicator

debian@devian:~$ find $HOME/.dbus -ls
find: `/home/debian/.dbus': No such file or directory
debian@devian:~$

@edwinksl which problem ? the locale ?

10:21 PM
what is happening!

huh . . . .apparently Edity doesn't have .dbus on Debian O_o ? how about pgrep dbus ?

@Serg actually nvm, probably not related

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD does pgrep dbus does anything ?

debian@devian:~$ pgrep dbus
460
1131
1132
1139
debian@devian:~$

Nope, you have dbus . . . so why you don't have that folder ?

10:24 PM
idk
im using Jesse
Debian

There's no pencil tho

debian pencil XD
anyways see yall later

Q: How to set locale for all children of python app?

SergI have written an app indicator in python for Ubuntu desktop, which calls several external programs via subprocess. It works fine under English locale , but breaks with others. I know that there is a way to do subprocess.call( ['command','arg1','arg3'], env=new_env_dict) however I am intereste...

Anybody wanna take a stab at it ? Perhaps @JacobVlijm ^

why do you only have 200 rep on SO
do something on it ;)

Too competitive of an environment, I think.
i need to clean up my room somehow

rm -rf room

O_o nooooo , then i won't have place to stay

mv serg china

11:32 PM

I need to get $$$ saved up for that first though

Aw, Twitter denied my verification request :(

shaddy character, this Nathan Osman, we cannot verify him . . . even though he is all over the interwebs

never trust canadians

cooks rice and cleans his room, while listening to Kopriklaani's Levan Polka

11:50 PM
not cooking noodles?

Not today :)

Be careful with rice. If you forget it for a few minutes, it might ruin your pot.
Had that happen once here... :-/

Rice cooker that I have turns off and just keeps the food warm
it sticks , but not too bad usually

Nice.
I had an ordinary pot. After the incident, its inside looked like a volcano and its bottom was arched outside so that you could spin it around like a roundabout.

@NathanOsman dude, they denied Michael Fisher's verification request...
