Fair call?
Thank you for the disclosure about your cross-post. I'm afraid this practice is discouraged on Stack Exchange. Please choose one community for your question and don't cross-post in the future. — Andriy M 1 min ago
Both questions have an answer, by the way.

@AndriyM absolutely
(And the new mobile chat seems usable, yeah!)

@dezso Nice. I guess you didn't check the reputation page in your profile. It has details usually about the -1 and +2, etc

@ypercubeᵀᴹ That would require opening the profile, going to the Reputation tab... Seems like too much trouble when the top bar is already there with all the information needed to confuse him. :)

@AndriyM yes, the top bar has only the sum of the latest rep changes

@dezso Thanks.
And for good measure:

7:22 AM
@ypercubeᵀᴹ I didn't. And I did not have to suggest an edit for ages.

7:35 AM
@dezso hilarious
@dezso with edits you don't get the rep until the edit is approved

Not sure what to do about this one:
This thread is a mess. Please don't edit the same post to ask various questions. If the question is new, feel free to submit it as new i.e. using the Ask Question link. Happy voting, UK-people!
I'll be sad if the exit campaign wins

@Phil Why?

@TomV Being in the EU, giving us freedom to work anywhere in Europe without a visa, has given me many amazing opportunities. There doesn't appear to be any significant disadvantage to remaining. plus I'm not a racist! Immigration isn't the problem that people want us to believe it is. That & the Leave Campaign is just full of shit and outright lies: medium.com/im-trying-to-fact-check-brexit

@Phil I can't form a real opinion on it, Britain has a special status in the EU compared to Belgium, I only think both campaigns aren't necessarily honest
My main problem is with the Euro, not that it exists, but that we have a monetary union without a real union otherwise

@AndriyM That is obsolete now.

@TomV It's going to be a very close vote

8:57 AM
@Phil due to generally agreed worldwide legislation even if we weren't in the EU you would still have the right to work in the EU so don't panic
My gut feel is that I want us to be in but this EU ... they need a shock to change, real change not just the odd "when it might suit them concession"
@TomV Actually although that appears to be the worlds opinion it's been proven time and time again that that is not really the case, pretty much every law we have tried to prevent has been over-ruled by the rest of the EU
You'd think this "special status" might mean something, but it appears to just mean "if we leave, many others may follow"

@Darth_Wardy You at least have the special status of an own monetary policy

Whilst it may sound bad, I think the EU needs us to leave to allow europe to build something new and better ... I like the EU and what it stood for when it was founded but its come too far and lost it' way
@TomV Yeh ... part of my reason for wanting the EU to reform ... a currency shared by the whole of europe would never work

I strongly believe that if member states can have their own economic policy and tax policy they should also have their own monetary policy with a free floating currency

@TomV agreed
And all this talk about immigration, I think is mostly bloat ... i really don't care about who comes to england as long as they are contributing to our economy instead of coming over purely to drain (we should be able to control that a small amount but not to the degree that leave campaigners are demanding here)
I'm still torn ... I want to remain, but not in this EU :( ... I want to remain in Europe but not the EU, but leaving the EU might politically be a headache situation to resolve and our politicians here are proven morons.

@Darth_Wardy My feelings too, I like the idea of a european union, visa free, no borders
You just can't trust politicians to implement it correctly when big bags of money can be earned abusing the idea instead

9:09 AM
Exactly that's what the EU was originally about, finding a few politicians that really care and can take a common sense view on it is the hard part
I've been watching Nigel Farage go nuts in the EU from the past few years lately, whilst I think he personally is completely bonkers, he's had the right idea ... the EU has lost its way

He's a lunatic

he is ... but so funny to watch, he's basically a toned down Donald Trump
not by a lot though lol

9:26 AM
@Darth_Wardy We don't have the right to work in the US, do we?
Even for Australia, we need visa to work.
I don't think there is any world-wide legislation that affects this. Every country decides who can work or not in it
Not that I think that's the most important part for the referendum.
Far more people come to work to UK that go from UK to the rest of the EU
(that -> than)

People are not blind. The question is confusing and not well formatted. Plus it has both (questioning and answers) parts. The site has a clear distinction. Questions should be put in questions and answers should be put in answers. Not at the same place. — ypercubeᵀᴹ 7 mins ago
I've edited your answer and voted to reopen. In the mean time, you can read the various sections on questioning and answering here: How the site worksypercubeᵀᴹ 1 min ago
Voted to reopen, although it's still not clear what they are after. I guess it might be clear for Oracle folks.

I mod flagged it for deletion

@ypercubeᵀᴹ with a visa we do

@Darth_Wardy yeah, you need a visa, that's my point.
In all the EU, you don't.

I would rather that
If i can prove to that gov that I am there contribute there's no reason why I would be denied a visa
If I just want to freeload and leech off a country why should I have any more rights than a tourist?
@ypercubeᵀᴹ it sounds like the question is more one of "As an EU citizen I have the right to go wherever the hell I want and not have any border control ask any questions"
that for me personally ... feels a bit complacent when we consider that people in general can't be trusted to make good calls ... how long before the EU decide something retarded like "Iraw is now a member" and then the UK have no control over anyone in iraq coming here purely to cause trouble
If the genuine reason for the move is to work any country we be daft to deny you a visa

@Darth_Wardy Yeah, I don't disagree on that.
@Darth_Wardy or Turkey ;)

The fact that a visa is required though is stupid ... every entrance on every border should work that way IMO
but that's just a trust thing between nations ... not being in the EU for me means not being dictated to from Brussels, that doesn't mean the UK borders are shut ... if it means that EU borders are shut then they will have bigger issues IMO
In the UK a key point we have more non EU workers here than we do EU, so it's hardly an issue to us that people come here ... I think the UK just wants the right to say ... sure come here, but work, don't leech, and the EU just wants to tell everyone "go where you like and work if you want to"
that for me is the key in it all

2:13 PM
Thanks for the edit @AndriyM
@Darth_Wardy We have a lot of customers in France and I certainly would hate to have to wait and present documents every time I cross the border though

@TomV I guess the full stop at the end was just indulging my OCD, but the absent comma tripped me over when I first read that long sentence.

@TomV I know the feeling, I work for a UK based company that is subsidiary of a French company
The bulk of our clients are french or german
Don't get me wrong here, it'll be a pain I think if UK leaves the EU, but i'm thinking that for the greater good the healing process may requires us to do so

@TomV Downvoted and flagged. Now deleted.
The other dupe has been merged on SO now so I deleted the migration stub here.

Is this an appropriate venue to ask a DBA training question?

This site or this chat?

@FredShope yeah (I meant the chat, here)

OK good. I'm a junior/mid-level DBA looking to get some skill-up-type training, something like Brent Ozar's Senior DBA class. Job has offered to pay for it, provided I can find something that doesn't require travel, but I'm in the middle of nowhere so it's basically online ILT or nothing. I have Pluralsight already and have been through a lot of the cheap subscription-based exam training (461, 462, 464 et al). I'm struggling to find anything. Any thoughts?
(Just realized I forgot to mention, MS-SQL)

@FredShope MVA has some good content.

4:32 PM
@FredShope Ozar site has online training material (videos), too.

Profile doesn't specify where you're located but since your linked twitter account follows Patrick Purviance, I'm guessing Wichita area?

Yes indeed

Keep an eye out for your SQL Saturdays as well. OKC has one at the end of August. KC hosts middle of September

Ah, I have been looking at schedules and hadn't seen those come up yet. I went to one in OKC a couple years ago and really enjoyed it, I definitely would attend another

I'll likely be at the OKC one this year

4:47 PM
abort abort!. Save yourself @FredShope

@Lamak From what? I'm thinking about that "save yourself" line from Event Horizon

Lexmark is just afraid I'll have a bucket of my chicken made with 11 herbs and spices

also, he's a weirdo

It's important to explain jokes in depth here

Very much.

5:08 PM
And the longer running the joke is, the longer the explanation should be, of course.

Yeah, I could see that. I don't mind fried chicken but it's not quite lunchtime yet

Has anyone ever successfully repaired a sqlserver instance using the instance repair function
seriously that thing never works

6:19 PM
@A_V I can't remember trying to
I saw your question on main on mobile and was planning to add a comment "why not uninstall/reinstall"
or what Aaron added in the meantime, what's the underlying problem (maybe add that to the question on main)

A_V
seriously @TomV it seems like the best course of action
wasting countless hours on debugging of a messed up instance is just so counterproductive, reinstalling would take much shorter

@A_V While re-installing you might consider an upgrade to a more recent version, I don't know enough specifics of the environment but you could give it a thought

A_V
trying to find a quick fix for this error
I have to patch about 20 more sqlserver 2008r2 instances
if I need to reinstall each of them it's gonna be a pissoff

@A_V Why do you need to repair? What's the underlying issue?

A_V
Trying to install a patch and it fails
looks like I need to install missing components
but the setup fails to run

6:27 PM
Hmm, that wasn't included in the question though

A_V
so I'm trying to run a repair

Which "patch" are you trying to install, specifically? How does it fail, specifically?

A question stating "Hey, I'm trying to install this patch, but I got this error, so I tried to run a repair but this throws this error" could work better in your case

Would.

Yes :)
The more information people get in your question, the better answers you'll get
There might be a small clue in a detail you're omitting that makes someone think "hey, I've seen that before"

A_V
6:31 PM
alright, gonna try installing the patch and report back with the error message in a minute

Update the question :)
Also, post your errors as text instead of images, that might help future google users find it
And helps us google them :)
@PaulWhite I didn't care about the question initially, expecting it to be closed on both sides anyway
But then I launched a long running script and figured I might as well get an answer in before it reached 5 close votes
I honestly didn't expect the close votes to disappear and the answer to become well-received

Surprise!

After your edit I'll even upvote the question

Goodness things are going well today.
Even aisle 5 is clear :)

Alright, so the long story is : trying to install sp3 on sqlserver 2008R2 sp1
basically it told me there were missing files in the windows/installer folder
some guy did some cleanup on the server and probably deleted them to save space (the system drive is 30gb)
after copying the files back there using the script that microsoft provides the patch started and is now installing. Time will tell if it actually fails halfway through but whatever it's working as of now.
update: it failed.

@A_V You could still update your question to provide more detail and leave a comment for RLF to post that as an answer since it worked
oh
but this site isn't only about receiving, there is a "giving" part to it too

A_V
I do understand that part, but I don't feel my question is quite relevant anymore

Not to sound rude or anything, but I don't necessarily answer questions to help the OP as much as I do it to help the community
Future googlers with the same issue are a real consideration
And I think I'm not the only one thinking like that but I can only speak for myself
And your question may no longer be relevant to YOU, but it might be relevant for someone experiencing the same or similar problem
</rant>
@A_V ^^

A_V
editing my question now

@TomV One of the drawbacks of posting an answer in a comment is that the question might be deleted.

6:59 PM
@PaulWhite But I can see how RLF posted a comment since the question wasn't reallly clear right away
Editing an answer to keep chasing a moving target sucks

@TomV Well ultimately the quality of the question is the root cause of that, which is why we place poor questions on hold. Answering in comments is just the wrong approach IMO.
Not to make this specifically about that question, I'm speaking generally.

But it's a natural reaction helpful people have. "Maybe this guy will find this useful but I'm not going to put much time in it"

@TomV Yes I understand the motivation, I'm just not sure it helps the site.
Surely it helps the OP.

@billinkc Sound advice for all occasions.

@PaulWhite Die in a fire, my friend

TBH your constant nagging about answering in comments is what made me post (crap) answers anyway before the questions get closed
Not sure my crap answers help the site either though :)

@billinkc :-D
@TomV Don't be so modest. You posted a decent answer once I'm sure.
Also: nagging?!
Crikey ;)

Big head.

@PaulWhite I'm sure you know when I'm joking by now

Yes.

I tend to not explain them at great length

Oh well that's where you're going wrong.

@TomV not sure if you belong to the room owners

7:17 PM
@Lamak After 1) failing to add a soccer tag, 2) not explaining my jokes at great length, 3) not posting decent answers and 4) incessant sloppy reviewing I don't think so no
@Lamak Was that a swimming pool your team was playing in last night? Jeebus

@TomV yeah, what a joke
@TomV don't forget 5) not being modest

@Lamak That's a plus, not a minus.
You meant "being modest". Not not.

Q: Remove header (column names) from query result

NasimI am using a Java based program and I am writing a simple select query inside that program to retrieve data from the PostgreSQL database. The data come with the header which is an error for the rest of my codes. How do I get rid of all column headings in an SQL query? I just want to print out ...

I'm waiting for someone to request a query that removes data from result as well ...

8:56 PM
"database actor"?
is a database an actor? – well I never

9:15 PM
@AndriyM haha. That was a search result, right?
