@bwDraco I am a Drain, toss some here.

lol

So does anyone game in Linux ?
with an nvidia card
I am getting crappy fps .-.
0
A: Low FPS after upgrading to Ubuntu 16.04

trunk96Ubuntu 16.04 has a lot of problem with video driver with Linux kernel 4.4.0. I suggest you to install Linux kernel 4.6.0 with this guide. In my case my nVidia started to work much better

So how do I make sure I don't spend absurd amounts of money on nothing?
I don't have a full-time job and I'm not the one paying for most of the bills, which makes it incredibly hard to recognize the difficulty of making and saving money.

Bob
@bwDraco YNAB
or, just don't carry much money around with you

4:27 AM
lol

@bwDraco I think you need a money manager. Give it all to me , and i will dole it out appropriatly if you have a good reason, and are making a (convincing) good descision. In the meantime i will be putting it on Faster Than Light to win in the 5th race.

@bwDraco set a monthly allowance, spend no more than that.
That's what I do/did
and of course, 3 month rule helps
but that requires a LOT of willpower
@bwDraco ping?

get a job, spend it all, have a reason to be doing that job, makes the job more fun :-)

Arch Linux wiki has great documentation

I do monitor spending, it's just that my impulses get the best of me.

4:32 AM
@bwDraco hence the three month rule
@Bob @Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooob
5

@JourneymanGeek That's pretty much impossible for me.
Jun 5 at 0:18, by bwDraco
Impulse control is not easy. Even just counting to 10 can require more self-control than is available to me. I am that weak-willed.

@bwDraco its a chicken and egg problem
There's a lot of stuff I want. The idea here's really to have a process to make sure I want it

@bwDraco oh i thought you were drinking high caffinated drinks not a meth user :-)

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
lol

So right now, I really know I want a razer blade stealth ;)
But I'm not going to order it till I get a job
So that's a second mechanism - task/reward
That said, most of my people management techniques are... based on dog training

4:37 AM

...and we have a chicken-and-egg problem. Without patience, you can't take the time to cool down, but without taking the time to cool down, you can't build self-control, which is a prerequisite to patience.

that was more like half an hour eh? :P

@bwDraco your arguement is cyclic

GP100 is absurdly expensive to manufacture. It's not going to see a consumer-oriented launch anytime soon.
Frame of reference: DGX-1 costs $130k and contains eight Tesla P100 GPUs.
Remove the cost of the other supporting components of the server (Xeon CPU, etc.) and you probably have the GPUs accounting for $80-100k of the cost.
That's $10k+ for each GPU, well beyond even most workstation video cards.
The GPU die (not even the 16GB of HBM2) probably costs well over $1000 just to manufacture (for the same reason the i7-6950X costs $1750).
Extremely large dies on cutting-edge process technology are incredibly expensive to make.

i was looking at that 6950, and i would rather have 4-6 cores, and 16 gig of on-die memory in the place of the rest of the cores. With GPUs doing stacking, and at least getting it on the PCB, why wouldnt intel soon start selling that?

Tack on 16GB of HBM2 and the GPU itself probably costs close to $3000 to manufacture!
No way GP100 will hit a consumer graphics card anytime soon. Nobody's paying $4000-5000 (after accounting for markup) for a gaming graphics card.
Hence there's a GP102 coming up soon.

bigger problems buying somthing that odd, would be not enough suckers/beta testers/complainers to get it working for everything perfect, except its nitch market it is bought for.

Your thoughts on the cost of manufacturing big, complex chips like GP100 on the latest process technology? (cc @JourneymanGeek @allquixotic @Bob)
Also, it seems GP100 is just not designed for graphics rendering of any sort so it is just not usable for this purpose (even in a workstation graphics card): reddit.com/r/hardware/comments/4kjqam/gp100_for_consumer_gaming/…
No ROPs or PolyMorph Engines.
That means no graphical rendering functionality on the die.
It's designed for compute only, not graphics rendering of any kind.
It also has full FP64 functionality, which is pretty much useless in consumer workloads.

6:27 AM
@bwDraco Halo products + there's some task that purely need that kind of processing
@bwDraco also I doubt those things have (good)/great) yield and economies of scale.

(Full FP64 functionality uses a lot of die space, too, which impacts yields and cost. It also increases the TDP unnecessarily which can impact performance in consumer workloads.)

where would i find out if , given the exact same rendering being done the 1080 would consume more or less power than the 1070? Say a person was using these "4k" gaming cards at 2.4k gaming, and they were not peaking the max on the 1070? would a 1080 always use more power (significant) to do the same thing as a 1070?

Q: What would happen to the internet if Google disappeared?

tkauslThere are a lot of great questions about What would happen if the internet failed semi-permanently and What would happen if electricity stopped working. As we all know, Google has a great impact on the internet. I'm not only talking about the search engine, Google offers a lot of other services ...

Given that a person wants to reduce power, and not render 400FPS the monitor cant even show :-) I wonder if a 1070 with lower "max" power, would say render a desktop (minimal effort) with less power still. OR could a person invest in the whole full speed 1080, and still run it at low powers just like a 1070 , for normal easy stuff.
Too much of the review and testing info is based on only bleeding the card for everything it has. when it comes to normal use, and power savings, would the 1080 always be sucking up extre 10+ watts

@Psycogeek heh, or higher res - the last gen top of the line cards barely did 4k at better settings.

Bob
hm... on my way to a second repcap?

@JourneymanGeek and given the 1080, and 4K at 60FPS , it doesnt seem like the list is very long for even making that yet. I guess the GPU would have to be 4X faster then pre 4K, not 1.75x faster?

6:59 AM
@Psycogeek you can turn up graphics quality with better monitors
and in some cases the extra ram's good for bigger textures
and well
I'm in no rush to replace my 980Ti with a 1080 or 1070

there are also certain algorithms and operations whose performance cost increases slower than linear, so multiplying the pixels by 4 may increase the performance cost by less than 4

But if you're getting a new card, you're getting >980ti performance in most respects with a 1080.
(well aside from buying a new card in my current situation being dumb, and planning ahead for a new phone and laptop once I have a job again)

And aa, long ago when we went all 1920x1200, the neeed for antialising was reduced. 4K wouldnt have big enough pixels to have so much stair stepping visable. Pixels is pixels.

@Psycogeek its not just pixels
you're not rendering plain dots
there's some physics, there's some texture stuff...

Aha 358.16 hits the sweet spot
Getting the same fps as in Windows
Finally
Also nothing supports the linux 4.6 kernel

7:07 AM

@JourneymanGeek I am thinking about getting (actually needing for reduced power) the 1070 or 1080. i probably wont make it to 4K, but dells 27" with the 2400 pixels accross , might fix the ScreenDoor problem of the 27" 1920 across.
i (always) want it all, cool & quiet cpu that throws flames when desired. If I Get the known to be less power 1070 and be low power and cool and quiet , or do the same thing with the 1080 and still be able to shoot flames :-)

@Psycogeek Unless you're running 4K, it shouldn't matter. The 1070 seems like a sensible option, but if they end up making a 1060 that could handle it, its probably what you'd go for.

sensable, money management :-)
are there any major problems reported yet with these new (1070) thangs? Anyone discover that 1/2 of it is cheap rendering tricks and disabled features?

@Psycogeek they arn't really out yet

oh, the 1080 then. i guess i wasnt out for that long :-)

7:18 AM
also not that common
but that's their current 'flagship'
but it usually takes a while for these things to come out

the asus one looks like it has sweet (hype) features. claim of better caps again, and proper coils . the HIS sounds cool too, the dissasembly of a HIS before showed good quality parts well done.

Something worth considering is its a better/smaller process size as much as architectural improvements

just to run any of them with more normal clocks, until needed. Even if factory overclocked.

Bob
@Psycogeek "factory overclocked" is such a weird term
that makes sense when it's an OEM doing the overclocking, but not so much when the chip designer does it

I concider "bios" overclocked to be not very smart. Kicking it up in software AFTER it is running, solves the problem of it failling at those speeds , and not getting TO the software to normalclock it again.

7:28 AM
@Bob "factory binned" might be more correct?

Bob
maybe

could be they could put cmos clearing jumpers on GPUs , a "GPU OK" button for failed posts :-) a jumper to enable overclock. but to lock it into a situation where it might need to go down a tiny notch as it ages is not a backup plan.
This opinion based on fools who would flash thier GPU bios with thier (working at that moment) overclocks.

7:47 AM
Good Afternoon!

Asus tends to have good, solid cooling
And hm. I was scrolled up

Um... wouldn't the price of gtx 970 come down after the 10** graphic cards are released?

980ti price already seems to be going down.

both EVGA models coil whine :-Phhht

7:59 AM
1070 is basically a better 970, and 1060 is an improved 960... have I got this right?

in todays day and age, they should be using one of the many coils that have that dampened at least.

@Rahul2001 different architectures and other things

eh... so a 1060 would peform better than a 980?

It's a bit like cars. Same model number and market niche, but not necessarily the same car.
@Rahul2001 no idea.

@Rahul2001 no

8:03 AM
@Sathya Damnit, you just pinged my 3 times... :P

@Rahul2001 define "better"

@tereško Uh... less lag while playing games? Faster rendering with image editing?

"Manufacturer Response:
Dear Simon,
Thank you for your feedback. Regarding the issue you reported, for best result please ensure that you install windows 10 SP2 before the Nvidia graphic card driver. . . " between here and there you can run in VGA mode LOL

I am not sure how lag would get directly affected by a GPU

@tereško ok, how about the rendering?

8:07 AM
if you are talking about just the framerate in games, then - no

@Rahul2001 practically you don't even need to look at the higher end cards unless you have specific needs.
I wanted decent 4k gaming. Some people want high refresh rates....

@JourneymanGeek I sometimes do 3d stuff with @AbhishekSaxena and on my 860M, it often takes more than a day to render at medium queality...

if it all plays out as we suspect, then the best dollars-to-framerate card will end up RX480

@Rahul2001 rendering 3d in stuff like blender fast is complex.
Most professionals just chuck a render farm at the problem

Don't I know it... I would have hired a render farm had our school agreed to pay...
We win the competitions, they take the credit, but they don't even let us use the facilities the school already has... :(

8:12 AM
i was just meandering in some "releaced" benches for the 480 as far a cute numbers , without any know of the actual picture, it gets walked on by these nvideot things. Must wait , much longer , see how it all plays out.

So unless your software is GPU capable..... no help at all.
A desktop card might still be faster

Yeah, I might assemble a PC soon, which is why I was asking...

Where to begin, I got the card today, I was super excited because I bought one of the most expensive 1080 cards out there and it was supposed to be premium quality.
What a disappointment, I started playing games and benchmarking, during high fps sessions the card had a constant buzz, the case is 4 ft away fro me and I could still hear it. <--- didnt follow the 3 month rule , see what it gets you, Pain :-)

@Rahul2001 I'd go with a midrange card first

I'm gonna have to use whichever card I buy for like 4 years, so I wan't to be sure I get the right one...

8:24 AM
potentially you can survive on the intel On-Die piece of junk for some time. Play final fantasy 7 for a while :-)
plus you have the advantage of fully testing a backup method for the gpu

:/

and you will have the $100 the new cards will have drooped in price, as they actually become available, and nvidea has to compete with AMD (meaning when it comes out too)
guess how much in USD a 1070 will go for in 6mo?

So basically, I should wait a few months?

@Rahul2001 I hope you know the 1070 retails at Rs40,000 here

8:40 AM
hm...

@Rahul2001 Waiting is never a bad idea

you should always wait for the new stuff to:
get to revision 1.1 (if not 1.2)
for all the beta testers to complain to get things fixed
Till the drivers dont suck
For all the game developers to test thier product on them
For the reviews to come out in abundance, so you can get a concensus on sucess

@Rahul2001 Also, when I built this box I went with a 660, which was the best choice in terms of power/efficiency at the time
Its always worth starting with a budget and building around it

@Sathya o_O I thought it would be more like 20k... :/

rather than trying to get all the neatest newest stuff

8:45 AM
@Rahul2001 um, the 970 itself is at 27k

@JourneymanGeek okay, then...
@Sathya lol... there go my fantasies...

@Rahul2001 heh. I think most of us have been there ;)

it is a human conditioned responce, how else would they suck us dry and give us nothing, and pay thier CEOs 48 million a year for laughing at the world.

Wait, doesn't nvidia make geforce gtx cards?

they design & license

other manufacturers pick up designs and manufacture

Bob
@Rahul2001 They make the GPU, and design a reference card.
@Sathya Usually called "OEM"s

8:51 AM
oh, ok...

@bob yes, thanks :)

Bob
some will customise, others will use the reference design directly
The OEM is the one who actually manufactures the card (or has final say on card design and outsources to an external factory...)

oh... so EVGA, MSI, Gigabyte or Asus?

@Rahul2001 essentially nvidia's the chipmaker

Is there going to be a difference in performance?

8:55 AM
Even 'nvidia' branded cards are made by someone else
er, kinda sorta
different cooling options, different 'binning' and so on

even different output video Port options sometimes

Is zotac any good?

Hm. I find my 980ti loud. They're competitively priced tho. My preference is for Asus.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Mostly the cooling and sometimes the support chips (VRMs, etc.)
binning happens on Nvidia's side

@Bob I was thinking said factory oc cards :p
