VirtualBox only runs x86* operating systems on an x86* processor.

You'll need full CPU emulation for anything else.

(I.E. qemu.)

qemu is the way to go

I tried booting an amd64 image in qemu on an x86 host and it took 20 minutes to boot to a graphical login.

Getting OS X to boot in VirtualBox is hard enough on OS X itself.
