2:43 AM
@BrianBallsunStanton I like "The Index"
I can see I'm going to have to be logged into three chat servers on a daily basis now ;) I also hang out on chat.MSO regularly and occasionally chat.SO

3:05 AM
If you want to talk to me try putting @drachenstern at the front of your message I should get it

3:32 AM
@drachenstern I'm over in rpg.se :)

Cool. What's RPG? Role Playing Games?

Ayup. Tabletop RPGs. If you want to get a sense of how one works, head over to my room at The Back Table
running a game there. It's generated some good questions

Oh I don't have time for it tonight ;)

Also +1 for using It Depends.
By the end of a quarter, my classes were bloody tired of me using that phrase :)

trying to get a little more action on the dba site and I've burnt through about half of what I want. I'm trying to use up my VtC ... you should too. We need to make sure we're shaping the site.

3:34 AM
But it really is the DB mantra. Bugger absolutes, everything depends on the situation.

@BrianBallsunStanton lol, I know that feeling.

VtC?
oh, votes to close?

@BrianBallsunStanton indeed it does.
@BrianBallsunStanton aye

Yeah, I'm trying to close all the "what should I read" nonsense
It's boring and stupid and googlable.
At present, I'm seriously not convinced the site should escape private beta.

as well the "how do I left join"

3:35 AM
::whimpers a little::

It'll escape private beta, I think, just not public beta

I mean, yeah, I got some mileage out of some of those questions and a mortarboard, but if I don't need to hit the documentation or run up a test case for a question... does it really need to be asked during private beta?

I say yes.

that's why I asked the questions I did about GAE's stuff. Cause they're tricky.

actually, whether people want to believe it or not. I think we should

3:36 AM
Sorry, missing the referents.
we should what?
(And I'm still trying to formulate my philosophy qustion)
Writing it in such a way that it's non-subjective is hard

sorry, I think we should ask the kinds of questions that require hitting the documentation

I think we should put the stuff that needs test cases
even on private beta

Yes!
But hey, I believe we're preaching to the choir here.
I mean, the raid question is a fantastic question, cause ... yeah oracle and raids = painful

I think so, but we gotta start pushing people on meta.dba.SE too ;)
but it's also a SF question, not a dba question

3:39 AM
It?
(also, yeah, I'm hazy on the difference between SF and DBA)

the raid question
serverfault is for server config stuff
there's going to be assured crossover between serverfault and dba

I diasagree, actually

just the idea is to limit it

Oracle Raid config is... ... fiddily
and not server config

@BrianBallsunStanton and that's the benefit of this ;)

3:40 AM
llike they have their 11 disk "original method" and they have their various auto-configuration methods
also, userscript for chat?
@drachenstern well, yes :)

@BrianBallsunStanton but to chose the underlying disk performance, do you think a DBA needs to be the only one making the decisions?
@BrianBallsunStanton yes, give me a moment and I'll give you a link

@drachenstern It depends :)
I... kinda think that should be the name of the room, but I don't think anyone would get it.

Also, you into philosophy at all?

go there, then on the one that's SEChatModifications you want to see the raw and install that in chrome
it'll popup at the bottom asking if you want to install
say yes
also, check the readme

3:42 AM
(I'm editing my dissertation on the philosophy of data and it's kind of preying on my mind)

I do like philosophy but I'm only a BS guy so don't get me too involved ;)

Wait one. will grab a link to my paper then.

do me a favor and star that link?

on a practical note, I'd love your ideas on how I can link the ideas in the paper to dba.se
can you edit it witha title?
My paper on the philosophy of data: mendeley.com/download/public/2110651/3640487732/…
random URIs in the favourites aren't hugely useful

edit the link? no
oh, I see what you mean, uh hang on

3:45 AM
Chat modification userscripts: github.com/rchern/StackExchangeScripts
(But you should get the star...

ok, you beat me to it, so I'll star yours
it doesn't really matter

::nod::
Anyhoo. Back to work for me. Drop by The Back Room sometime :)
::turns on desktop notifications::

1 hour later…
yes, we should form a VTC cabal here...

lol
we do on MSO

drat. I've already VtCd on all of those

I figure while we're getting going people can come here and discuss

Heya @Sandy

5:10 AM
Hola Sandy
@BrianBallsunStanton I really figured you had

Hai

@drachenstern was it from the grumpy comments? :)

no, just from the fact that close votes were already there ;)

oh, @drachenstern Your oracle filesystem security answer is wrong
It's not a performance thing

I figured
I was guessing, hopefully I made that point in the answer

5:12 AM
DB security is funky

Yeah, I don't know why people want OS level security on any but the basest of circumstances ... let the database handle it, let the DBAs hand out access to the database in particular
I can see the luxury of letting the sysadmins manage the passwords etc, but I don't see the need
But feel free to put a better answer of course ;)

Yeah.
It's one of the funky questions.
gods, I hate technet

So for introductions, I'm in Shreveport so on Central Time, and I do need to get to bed shortly ... up for a few more minutes tho
The names Cole but I pretty well only go by drachenstern online, drach for short
No I'm not German or necessarily German descended (well, I am if you go that far back)
Nice to meet ya'll

Nice to meet you too @drachenstern, I saw your post in meta about chat... thats why i'm here

Brian, in Sydney.

5:17 AM
@Sandy Yay!

I'm from India

it's early afternoon here. And I can't focus worth expletive

Do you normally use the chat feature here?
@BrianBallsunStanton lol, that's all the time for me
I find it disconcerting that I'm here this close to midnight local (when I really can't focus)

@drachenstern well, more it's a function of going paragraph by paragraph through my dissertation
it's painful.

in office... my manager doesn't like OS.. he think its time wasting :|

5:18 AM
@sandy Do you agree with our votesToClose?
OS?

@Sandy OS? You mean SO?

@Bria

You can press up to edit the last message
Well Sandy with your 3.4k total rep on SE2 sites I think you know well enough if it's helpful

i think we need to get as much as good question to attract experts

@Sandy Yeah. And "What should I read?" is ::muttermutterdeathmutter::

5:20 AM
@BrianBallsunStanton - I'm not regular on SO chat

If you're ever a bit bored, join us over in The Back Room (I'm running an RPG there)

I think we should get as much as good posts to attract experts

@BrianBallsunStanton I don't see that happening with Sandy ... just guessing

its best to close unnecessary posts before going to public beta...

5:22 AM
@drachenstern I agree, but... I can always hope :)
Dupe and bad question

I cast my vote to close that

I wish I had 2k rep, the close list is so handy.
Though I don't use it much over at RP

@BrianBallsunStanton - sure, you'll get it... keep up your enthusiasm...

heh, yeah :)
Oh, I know I will. (See my score at RPG.SE) It's just... a lot more handy now than it will be in 5 days? :)

@BrianBallsunStanton I would but > You have already voted to close this question

5:25 AM
hehehe

@BrianBallsunStanton, @drachenstern - by guys. its about 11am here. I need to get going with my works. I'll catch up later

cheers, mate.

@Sandy ciao
@BrianBallsunStanton peer review: meta.dba.stackexchange.com/questions/68/…
Yay, Nay, undecided?

exactly!!!!!1
nobody will want to tackle it, but we should at least define groundrules "this is not allowed"
Or were you "urrrrr"ing at something else?

5:31 AM
answered.
If they care enough to put DDL alongside the DML, someone can edit it into readability.
No DDL, no points.
Cause I'm not going to try to reconstruct a table in order to debug the statement. No-way, no-how.

I agree.
I would suggest that in questions with long queries the DDL come after the query tho, that's just me

Eeeeeh. It Depends(TM)
Sometimes the DDL is more important, sometimes the dml

If you're debugging a DML, then the DDL is secondary. If you're not debugging a DML, then why worry about the DML at all, unless you're discussing profiling, which is a form of debugging. Otherwise the DML doesn't need to be present. This presents a null DML over a DDL ;)

@drachenstern please hold while I try to parse that sentence.
If you're dbugging DML, than DDL is essential, not secondary.

Grrr, two votes left today, and about 18 hours to GMT 0
@BrianBallsunStanton but the FOCUS of the question is the DML

5:35 AM
did you mean DDL in your.... third use of DML?

I'm just thinking things that SCROLL
you know how you post long blocks of code and it starts scrolling the block of code?

no, happily. But that's because RPG.SE doesn't suffer from that particular problem :)

I'm thinking don't show me forty lines of DDL and then one line of SELECT

I'll agree that the focus of the question should be the topmost.
and that DDL should be truncated to only those fields important to the question

5:37 AM
woo, got nice answer

@BrianBallsunStanton that's all I'm saying
@BrianBallsunStanton sweet
Also, notice how it scrolls the textbox? That's what I mean by putting the DML over the DDL, so the DML is in focus when you start the question

wow, that's some fugly cross between PL/SQL and...
python?
oh, I agree. The interesting bit should always be above the fold, as it were.
never seen that // syntax

Yes, that's what I was getting at with my "put the DML first, then the DDL"
Which means this may need to become a FAQ too ;)

hrmmm, we should probably have a "Style guide" post, with answers as templates.

@BrianBallsunStanton that's what I'm trying to start

5:39 AM
Here's how to post DDL questions, here's how to post DML questions, etc.
New Q with "DBA.SE Style Guide"

updated the title

community wiki the bloody thing

Can we right now?
we can not

it needs to be edited enough times

Let's focus on letting it develop for now

5:42 AM
yeah

ok, I need to jet, time for counting stars on the backs of my eyelids
ttyl

5:56 AM
@drachenstern I'm over at Root Access majority of times

 Root Access

For all you Super Users out there. You have backups, right?

5 hours later…
11:14 AM
::sigh:: Silly users, accepting answers after 8 hours...

11:41 AM
Ugh, editing titles is hard

1 hour later…
12:49 PM
@drachenstern I've actually had quite a lot of luck with software based linux raids
Mind you, that was in an educational environment, but still.

1:11 PM
Hello all

Hey, just about to go to bed.
welcome :)

Good night then. I'm just doing my first steps in chat.

1:38 PM
@BrianBallsunStanton yes, but virtualizing a RAID from a SAN just seems silly. That's all
@bernd_k welcome then. Do you use Chrome?

I tried Firefox first, but couldn't login into chat. Now I'm using ChromePlus for chat.

ChromePlus?
I'm not familiar with that one

It's based on Chrome, but sending less info back to Google
Good bye

2:08 PM
Hola DTest

hi. sorry, just popped in to see if it worked and am about to get breakfast

That's fine, I'm responding to a few SO questions atm, saw some that looked appetizing, as it were ;)

I hope they're as appetizing as pancakes. About to do my rounds at SF

1 hour later…
3:35 PM
sometimes i just twiddle my thumbs at work :/ makes for good browsing of SF or SO, though

being new to private beta's, i see brian's comment: "This question is not a good question for the private beta. Can you delete it and ask it again when we go public"..
what makes it a good question for public beta, but not for private?

@DTest I dont' see it as a good question in either way. This is a site for objective definable answers. "what's a good podcast/blog" is subjective no matter how you cut it. I don't think it's acceptable now or in the future.
I am one man, I do not make all the rules, so I can only provide my input.

2 hours later…
5:58 PM
@badp
@radp
testing to see if non-members get highlighted from across the domains, I don't think so
