@MichelfrancisBustillos Can't say I've tried it, I've only read this

Ah, that's the app I'm currently using. Ref: softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/30540/…

@MichelfrancisBustillos Not really, but want that list again? #D

Haha! I'm good

Hello, just a quikc question, how do I vote for a nominee?

12:57 AM
@moonbutt74 After seven days from this moment, you would be notified that election phase has begun. (This is currently the nomination phase.) It is when you would get the chance to vote for your candidate. Until then, hold the horses tight!
You can find the info here: android.stackexchange.com/election?cb=1
And there's this info you forgot to take into consideration when asking your quick question. :)

Oh, the election has started!

5 messages moved from 2016 Android Moderator Election

In case someone is interested, you can check your moderator candidate score on data.SE

1:17 AM
And I also made a query to look up what badges you're missing (if any), since the election page only shows the count

@AndrewT. Would it be possible for you to try my solution? I don't know why but OP never replies back to me. Never did this time or the last time. If you try that solution, please have appropriate measures to deal with a boot loop, though it shouldn't cause any issue since I'm running my Nexus 6 on Android 6.0.1 perfectly with that solution.

@Firelord I don't have Xposed installed unfortunately, and I can't install it at the moment (at work)

3:24 AM
never mind, he reposted it already on Information Security

@AndrewT. Okay. No problem. :)
@AndrewT. And did it verbatim.

Q: Strange SMS received on android phone. Is this an exploit? Should I be concerned?

vik-yNOTE: I don't know where else to ask this question. Please don't down vote it. It will help if you tell the right place where I can ask this question, that'll help. I received an SMS from an unknown number today which had the following content. It looks very weird. Any idea what it is? Didn't kn...

Alright, the user changed the content a bit now.

Got edit rejected due to edit conflict :/ will wait for a while

Sharing this as it may be of interest. This app can be used to run distros from your phone
Hiren boot CD seems to be a very handy suite for crashed PCs. Truncated version having mini xp only Is made available at XDA by dev of drivedroid and can be booted off phone.

My tech-friend has Hiren boot CD, and it's certainly handy. Mini XP on Android!?

I am using it right now to salvage my data from crashed XP. Takes little hit and trial but works
You can directly install the version from xda above into the app and you are good to go...no need of making bootable USB which is a pain if you don't have second PC
Once ki salvage data, plan to install xp again (good enough for my use) and probably dual boot with Linux . Total noob with Linux and many sources recommending Linux mint to start with
Would appreciate advice from Gurus here- my interest is slick performance and preferably Windows like GUI and good support for drivers etc . I don't know what else is to be factored. Thanks in advance

@MatthewRead indeed

@Izzy How would you address this? :P
> I'll vote for you if you get an avatar like better... :P

1:06 PM
@Firelord I interpret it as a call to vote on my avatar, and ask you all to give me "likes". I'm not at FB, so I cannot argue this #D
(I know, it's certainly some language barrier and meant something different, but how can I tell? ;)

OMG, I got trumped =:-0

4:28 PM
Looks like the moderator elections are now for 2 positions

@bmdixon Indeed, great! @Firelord and @AndrewT., no excuses left :)
@MatthewRead congrats, you did it :)

6:46 PM
@Izzy I am glad to see you nominated yourself for the open Mod position you are an exceptional candidate who's tireless effort and kindness toward others does not go unnoticed. Also I do hope that @AndrewT. and @Firelord throw their hat into the election process they are both upstanding candidates that could do a lot of good for the site. The more options in the candidate pool the better for every type of user voice to be heard.

Another allstar that I think would be great and enters the election is @DanHulme.

Thanks! Will try for it.

@Izzy :P

What am I seeing? The site doesn't show a preview of your manifesto during editing, unlike Q and A.
@MatthewRead In the "Editing Nomination for USER" window, it shows "150 characters to go". When that limit is reached, it switches to "1050 characters left." Is there a good reason for this separation of limits?
@Izzy You filed the nomination. What do you think the first limit is meant for? There is no description (it may be meant for an intro of yourself but that's just a guess) there.

8:40 PM
@Firelord 150 minimum, 1200 maximum

Goodness. Where is my mind! That's so simple.
Oh, thanks by the way, for the bounty. The first one I earned, without working for it. :-)

You deserved it, that was an awesome answer. Detailed with multiple approaches and different levels of control over the feature, and info I couldn't find anywhere else

9:10 PM
@Firelord I found it rather funny that it suggest 150 chars might be enough. Personally, I feel the 1200 chars already quite limited (but understandable: one should be precise but not write a book there).
@MatthewRead have you noted that when a flag is not declined, the post nowadays automatically receives a downvote (even if you just say "helpful, but no action required")? That's hard in some cases, as one has to decide whom to punish – as regardless how you act, someone will be punished ;)
Do you have some background on that (before I have to approach TL for it)?

@Izzy I've noticed the automatic downvotes on spam flags, but I haven't read anything about it. I didn't know it happened when a flag was dismissed ... that seems awful
@Izzy Would you be so kind as to flag this answer? Not sure if Meta behaves the same, but better to test there than the main site

@MatthewRead When it's dismissed, you hurt the flagger (will test that soon on our berserker-flagger at SR ;)
@MatthewRead Flagged NAA

@Izzy Dismissed it as helpful, no auto-vote

Whatever the flag is: when the mod says "no action needed", OP shouldn't be punished (even if it was flagged spam – because if it were spam, the mod wouldn't say "no action needed", right?)
@MatthewRead OK, so Meta behaves different. Or that's because it was you own post (you've acted in self-defense ;)

Agreed. There are plenty of posts that seem spammy that definitely should be flagged, so if I investigate and find no evidence I will dismiss the flag as helpful

9:22 PM
We could test it again with an answer from me, @Firelord flagging it, and you dismissing it – but I guess that will be the same result, and it's just different on Meta.

It also seems ripe for abuse -- user gets 1 regular downvote, then a 2nd for flagging, then a 3rd for when the moderator dismisses the flag
Yeah probably Meta is different

Exactly. So one can "punish" some other user and even get a badge for that, yay …
Well, let's make another test. There are some low-Q answers around here. Maybe I flag one and you dismiss as helpful, and afterwards you delete the answer (so user even gains rep, as it's already downvoted)? That's catching 2 birds with one stone, including a cleanup. Want to pick one?
I'd say the one I've picked justifies a NAA.
Well, OK, a LQ – not quite a NAA.
Or let's check the stats for really bad answers :)
@MatthewRead this one?
OK, 4 candidates. Make votes? Roll dice? :)
Which one shall I hit?

@Izzy Dismissed as helpful, got auto-downvote
@Izzy That's an edit link?

@MatthewRead Ah, so it's the "Meta vs main" thing.
@MatthewRead ouch. Wait, I just flag it.

@Izzy Hmm, something is very broken there
Your flag doesn't show in the queue, and on that page I only see the top half of the pending flag bar with a "close" button and nothing else

9:36 PM
@MatthewRead Someone's reading us and intervening, huh? ;)

The flag is still there, the post timeline shows it has not been resolved
something's borked

@BoLawson Thanks, Bo – and yes, I'm hoping for @Firelord and @AndrewT. as well!
@MatthewRead Yuck. Wait, maybe I can kick it free.
Boing another one.

@Izzy seeing the same behavior. going to have to make a meta post about this, super weird

@MatthewRead Ouch, we broke it =:-0 Man battlestations, keep people from flagging until resolved!

@Izzy This is what I see (I enlarged the bottom bar to make it clear)

9:44 PM
Looks like broken JS. Some blockers running? Though I'm not aware of one that would interfere there (lemme check some flagged post on SR)
@MatthewRead looks normal over there. So it's either ASE, or your browser. I don't see any other of our mods here (you could @@ ping one, though). Oliver could check on where he's mod, but as it works on SR I don't expect trouble there.

Q: Not An Answer flags are completely broken?

Matthew ReadA user flagged this post as Not An Answer. However, at the time of writing the flag does not show up in the flag queue yet the post timeline shows that the flag has not yet been resolved. The flag-details bar at the bottom of the page contains no content — just a close button. In the screensho...

@Izzy I tested it in IE with no blockers, I see the same thing

Goes up fast: +1 from me, someone else starred already :)

10:08 PM
Alright, looks like there is a 15min grace period where the community is supposed to handle the flag before mods see it, or something
@Izzy Dismissed as helpful, no vote

@MatthewRead Oh! OK, that makes sense. Give the mods some piece: if 7 people flag it in 15min, our special mod takes care for it automatically (the one called "Community").
@MatthewRead Strange. Lemme see what our super-flagger has as reasons …
VLQ, OK. I flagged those few NAA. Hunt down another one?
With VLQ this time?
(some funny cleanup job we do here ;)

@Izzy Same with this one, no auto-vote android.stackexchange.com/a/139721/1465 (I deleted it after dismissing as helpful)
and yes let's continue :P

What did you flag: NAA or VLQ?
And do you have some I can flag VLQ?
Our stats are too short, got those already ;)

that last one you had flagged NAA

I mean, in 15min :)

10:14 PM
@Izzy That one was flagged VLQ by Aaron and I marked helpful, there was an auto-vote
I expect yours will be the same...in 15 minutes :P

OK, so we've got a pattern: VLQ always receives a downvote unless dismissed as noise. Others don't get a downvote when dismissed as helpful. Right so far?
I don't care if they get a flag when handled according to the flag, 'cause then it's deserved.
I further know it gets a downvote immediately when flagged as spam – but don't know what happens when such a flag is dismissed as noice (downvote reverted?)

@Izzy found some info meta.stackexchange.com/a/230635/154510 but no rationale

@MatthewRead "Very Low Quality flags that are dismissed as helpful trigger an automatic downvote." Yupp. Noticed that :)

So it looks like the double-downvote is intentional
huh.

@MatthewRead Yes, I can follow those lines. Somehow. But would we prefer an additional checkbox "fire downvote?"
Checked by default, so one has to opt out, maybe …
@MatthewRead Double? I've just noticed one (when the flag is dealt with).

10:21 PM
@Izzy I mean one you can give yourself, and one given by Community when the flag is dismissed as helpful

@MatthewRead That again is a bit tricky: try applying a direct downvote on a post that just received one due to your action on the flag. You might be surprised.
Same when someone voted a question duplicate and you want to upvote that comment. You can do so only before you voted for dupe yourself.

that is weird

@MatthewRead Yeah, my thoughts when I encountered that first.

10:42 PM
Alright people. I'm in! Time for you to review my work. :D

@Firelord YAY! \o/ Checking…
@Firelord comment left :)
Wow, cleanup hat – I've missed that one ;) late congrats!
@MatthewRead so with @Firelord as mod, we will have less spam flags? I remember the same was said about some other mod (when Journeyman nominated on SU) #D

11:03 PM
@Izzy Thanks, both for it and the comment. :)

:)
@Firelord I just grew a couple of centimeters reading your comment. Wow! And thanks!

Sure. :)

(the "innocent bystander" now gets the impression: "I scratch your back and you scratch mine" :)
(but he should stay calm. Rule #1 if something goes wrong: "slap the nearest innocent …" right :)

@Izzy Yes, the timing is kind of funny. But what can really be done! The comment is the truth. Do you want me to take care of my comment? I can post it sometime later. :)
Sooner or later, I would have posted one.

@Firelord Nah, it's pretty clear that we wrote our comments at about the same time I'd say – and read each other's comment only after pressing "save".
Conclusion: "Vote for those two, they seem to work together well" :)

11:12 PM
Hehe.

And that's the truth.
So:
(oldie but goodie :)
Hm. That somehow describes one of our tasks as mods, doesn't it? LOL

@Izzy I'm often reminded of that when we're trying to decide if an app recommendation that's actually relevant to the question is spam.

Yeah. Trouble sometimes isn't the post, but … a later edit.
