5:00 PM
so, a cocktail is not a dish?

no :(

replicate-food?
OK, replicate-food-or-beverage is dumb

@rumtscho Star Trek!

simply ?

, but it's a possibility
it seems better than somehow
Otherwise, we have reduced this to an existing problem: the site is called "cooking" even though it's about things that aren't cooked.
And we want to replicate things that aren't dishes.

5:01 PM
@Catija now the new ingredient list works. Thanks.

Yeah, the question that even brought this up isn't even a "dish"... it's more of an ingredient.
@rumtscho Anytime. Glad I figured out how that works.

I think English must have a word which combines "food" and "beverages". It's probably verypretentious though.

Jay
vittles!

And then he went and deleted it after all that work :(

Yeah, there's some blurry line, ingredients definitely aren't dishes, and things like hors d'oeuvres are iffy.

5:02 PM
Aaaaand another one. This is substitute day, I guess.

@rumtscho no, no,
omg it's a verb too
"victual with me next Saturday"

Jay
however lets be honest here, how many ESL people are going to know the word victual

victuals.stackexchange.com

it is a verb with three mutually exclusive meanings!

Jay
in fact i bet a good number of english as first language wouldn't know what victual means right off the bat

5:04 PM
@Jay yes, rumtscho did say "pretentious"

@Jay I think we're both joking at this point
at least I am.
but hey, if you don't like "victuals", then also covers it

Jay
lol ok

oh I like that one; when we rename the site it'll still start with "co" so it'll be easier to remember.
Can still type "co" and let chrome complete the rest of the address.
Wait, but I think it might be only food, not drink.
Gonna have to go with victuals.

you think drinks aren't comestible?
Oh!
3
A: Collective word for food and drink

JaydeeI've always liked "comestibles" though there may be a discussion as to whether this includes drinks or not, but then the boundary between food and drink can be a bit fuzzy.

"there is no reason why drink should not be considered as food -- think 'liquid foods'"
There are an awful lot of things you can say about language that begin with "there is no reason why..."

5:11 PM
we could just call the tag and leave it at that
although has an even more deliciously weird sound to it
if there is no copycattery on the disc world, there should have been one, whatever that is

Jay
Ive never seen copycat used as a verb before

obligatory calvin and hobbes

back to a serious idea

for some reason, I'm OK with the bad R word there

5:17 PM
Like that one

Hmmmm... That sounds good.

probably because "recreate" sounds like work

recipe-recreation :D :D

so that nobody will expect to get spoonfed a recipe when asking about it
well, some still will expect it, but we'll just have to disappoint them.
@Jefromi I don't insist on all tags being nouns

Jay
i like the alliterative ring

5:19 PM
it does seem that copycat is the most common term actually used for this...

and we'll allow bureaucrats to use and dbas

sorry, I guess I'm in a "everything's funny" mood right now. I didn't mean to laugh at your suggestion.

I thought it was funny.

sounds more natural, but it somehow invites being misunderstood as a recipe request. "Please give me the perfect copycat recipe for"

5:24 PM
@rumtscho don't worry, I'm being unhelpful too :)

Well, the problem with "copycat" is that it is a whole-cloth creation of a recipe... realistically, most of these already exist... I honestly think that it's more useful for someone to just find a recipe in google... like I did for the dressing one... it's not difficult and most of them exist already.

@Catija yes, I also think that it's more useful. Actually, I would find that good enough to be an answer

... but I also wouldn't know where to start when it comes to creating a recipe.

especially seeing that the ingredient list contains some mysterious "flavoring agents"

@Jefromi I like this.
It sounds like an action, less like a meta tag

5:29 PM
so basically, even somebody with a trained palate can spend weeks trying to guess what to use to achieve a similar taste. And somebody who cannot even tell whether something on the list is a flavor or a preservative shouldn't even start.
hi @Shog9

'morning
"reverse-engineering" would be appealing to the SO-set, but probably not particularly helpful to casual readers

@Shog9 Long time-no see :D

really?
time flies when you get nice weather and can work in your garden

The problem is, we need not just something which describes the question after you've seen the tag, but also something of which the user thinks while selecting tags or search terms

@rumtscho well, we can synonymize copycat and mimicry and replication and everything to whatever we pick

5:31 PM
@Shog9 I started a new job and my hours are crazy, so I'm never here... my boss is out today so I'm being "bad"... And feeling incredibly guilty the entire time.

@Catija just as well you didn't win the election then ;-)

@Jefromi I wouldn't want to create new tags nobody has used before just to have synonyms
let's create one tag, and if other versions which mean the same start naturally cropping up, that's where synonyms come into play

@Shog9 Yep. Between that and the pregnancy... it's just as well. Mostly I was there to give Jolene some competition :P

@Shog9 you have a garden in New York?

@rumtscho Maybe it's one of those cool rooftop gardens.

5:32 PM
"copycat" "copying" etc. are probably good colloquial terms, but might cause some confusion for ESL folk
@rumtscho I like the idea of creating some synonyms just to drive folks to whatever tag you pick. Unlike topic tags, it's kinda unlikely folks will naturally create synonyms for these; they just won't use any tag.
So if you can come up with a few likely ideas, might as well use 'em to drive folks to the right place.
@rumtscho no, I live in Colorado.

Sorry, I don't get your idea with "driving"

@rumtscho As in a cattle drive... "herding".

What do you suggest we do so that the driving happens?

@rumtscho Creating synonyms.

I've seen gardens in NY... They live in little boxes and occasionally catch a glimpse of the sun... Just like the people.

5:35 PM
@Catija yes, I understood the word.

@Shog9 I've seen some really nice rooftop ones.

My point is, if we create 5 synonyms nobody is aware of, and nobody has ever tried to use, we will still have 0 questions with any of these synonyms

We reasonably frequently add the mimicry tag to things. No one's ever created any form of copycat as a tag, despite it being possibly the most common actual English word for it.

so, will we retag existing questions with the 5 synonyms?

5:36 PM
@rumtscho wait, are we talking about the same thing?
For our chosen tag X, we create syns, copycat -> X, mimicry -> X, etc.

@rumtscho But they might try one of the synonyms... and then be redirected to the correct tag.

@Jefromi I don't know. That's why I asked you guys to clarify what you are talking about.

@rumtscho which is fine. The hope is that if someone's asking a question and types, "copy" or "mimick" or "duplicate" they get a tag suggested that matches what they're after.

So when new users who can't create tags try to say "copycat", they get X.
Instead of the current state, where they get nothing.

Ah, OK. Forgot about the "I'm typing it and not getting a suggestion" moment.

5:37 PM
@Catija that's pretty cool

yes, with that scenario in mind, the synonyms sound like a good idea.

can't imagine what that would cost, but... Still cool.

I read somewhere that the most expensive hobby in the world is gardening

@Shog9 Everything in NYC is so expensive... Considering the cost of the apartment in the first place, I doubt it's that huge of a hardship for whoever can afford the apartment/condo.

@rumtscho I'd believe it.

5:39 PM
@rumtscho Particularly for people like me who can't do anything but kill plants.
... and my dad's a landscape architect.

Especially here, where the climate and soil are not particularly great and the growing season is short.
There are places where gardening can be as cheap as a shovel and a packet of seeds, but 7000ft in Colorado ain't one of them.

@Catija those things don't run in families. My first F in school was on something to do with electricity - and both my parents are electric engineers, and a pair of grandparents are electrotechnicians.

We managed to grow some radishes this year... which is saying a lot for us.

@Shog9 7000 ft? I'm soo jealous

Most of my plants end up eaten by bugs... or I forget to water them.

5:41 PM
I was born at 600 m. Living at 130 now and hating it.

@rumtscho all that oxygen, just cluttering up the place
The view is incredible, but man do you get a workout just doing little things
I grew up at about 500ft, so... Totally not adjusted to this.

Now if you say you have whitewater close by, I'll slowly turn green enough to pass for a plant

not close; a couple hours to get to the Arkansas River
If you want elevation and whitewater, you move to Salida

Jay
Oh i just noticed all the replication questions Hunter asked
I guess thats what sparked the whole discussion

@Shog9 that looks great. If I didn't need a job and other such stuff, this is a place I'd love to live.
although it's a bit far away

5:50 PM
@rumtscho yeah, well... The "other stuff" is why I don't live there. It's pretty remote.
Stunningly beautiful though.
Nice people too

If I didn't need "other stuff", I probably wouldn't go to America. Instead, I'd move to Bovec.

But yeah, you kinda have to either be part of the tourism industry or be reasonably wealthy to live there.

That's what the valley looks like

nice

Nice!
Now a picture when it's raining...

5:51 PM
That's the river
and note, the picture is not photoshopped

Ah, is that you?

this is the real color of the river when you're there
no, a random picture off the internet
I don't have much kayaking pictures

lotta cobalt in that water, eh?
(j/k)
Heavy metal poisoning is one of the potential downsides of moving to old mining towns here

i have no idea why. Most rivers on the southern side of the Alps have a color going towards turqoise. But Soca (in Bovec) is especially beautiful. Also crystal clear.
where would you guys live if somebody started paying you your income without you actually having to work?

Probably where all my friends and family are close, so here?
How about you?

6:00 PM
Bovec is the first place that comes to mind, really.

@rumtscho assuming it's still my current income, somewhere else where I can afford to buy a house?

@Jefromi yes, that's what I meant. Or maybe even if you were given a million per month so you could go anywhere?

not a serious answer, but there are some insane houses up in the hills here:
which are I suppose a compromise between living somewhere more natural and not moving far

wow!

(I don't have a good answer for the actual question)

6:07 PM
Oh, sure, a bigger house is always nice.
I thought Rummy rather meant which city/region.
@rumtscho If they could move Amsterdam to the vicinity of Bovec, I'm with you!

I rather like southern Idaho. Green, decent land, not too populated, access to I-90 means access to either coast is fairly painless. If I ever retire, I might retire there.

6:45 PM
Hmm am I the only one who wants to live close to people?
ponders

6:57 PM
@Cerberus yes, she did, I was just answering a different question (or alternatively, the same one assuming that I did want to stay close to people here)
@Shog9 That is a good choice! I drove through on a road trip recently and it did look pretty amazing.

A: Is heated up bleach dangerous?

DannyI cleaned my cooker with bleach didn't no u wasn't ment to. I done it Monday and had dimmer that was cooked inside that night, we childmind but they didn't eat with us that night, and is perfectly fine.everyone in our household have been sleeping since Monday night on and off, we have sore throat...

I feel nervous for his family

I prefer meat to dimmers, but I guess if you cook 'em long enough they might tenderize a bit

Jay
I'm worried the horrendous English might be a side effect of the bleach

what is a childmind?
oh, it is a verb

Jay
"we have children, mind, but they didn't..."
I assume is what that means

7:12 PM
@Jefromi Ok makes sense.
@Jay Oh, dear.
One would assume the concentration of bleach was low enough to safe after thorough rinsing. But if they all feel ill...
Could be nocebo, though.

@Jay "we babysit".

7:31 PM
Ohh good one.
It is possible.

Jay
@Stephie oh, hmmm maybe. honestly never seen it before but it makes sense
Ah childminder is a british term for a babysitter

Yes, that's what I meant by "it is a verb"

See?
