Q: Free Download Manager Development [FDM]

sami1592Is the development of Free Download Manager halted? The last code committed was in 2014 :/ Here is a link to the repository.

@Zizouz212 You wanted to chat?
Personally I think this should be on-topic for the site, but per the meta discussion we currently consider it off-topic - hence my close vote. I see it's now up to 3 votes-to-close
And I don't see where else the OP can ask on the SE network

@kdopen Yeah, sorry I took awhile - I got that ping when I was writing a math test :/

@ziz
So do you think we should reconsider this type of question as on-topic?

I really think we should.
I mean, it doesn't hurt to allow these types of questions, and a lot of stuff with open source is about a collaborative environment, and sharing code

The only concer is a flood of 'whatever happened to ...?' type questions
s/concer/concern/

I suppose
Well, there's still the regular moderation aspect: down votes, close votes could also solve that. But the biggest concern seems to be if these questions would become prevalent.
What was our reason for originally making these questions off-topic?

I was just looking

Q: Are questions about specific software on-topic?

RanveerLet us say I have a question about an open source project that looks something like: Hi! I am a newbie user of XYZ. So, while I was referring to XYZ's API doc, I couldn't understand what function ABC() does. Well, obviously doubts like these get asked on SO all the time and are on-topic (s...

Q: Are questions about specific open source projects on-topic?

KozuchAre questions about specific open source projects on-topic? I mean questions like: Why is project X the way it is and not other? Where can I get support for project Y? Why did project A split into B and C? I know these would be better answered by particular projects but (1) there may be users...

9:39 PM
The question you linked to in your close comment - the leading answers says it should be on-topic
That first question is about the code (which can go to SO), and not about the status of a project.
@Zizouz212 That was the second question.

But again this is a very specific case of 'http://opensource.stackexchange.com/questions/643/what-happens-when-a-corporate‌-sponsor-goes-bust?s=31|0.0525' - in this case an open source project

Hmmm...

I know we have other questions about defunct projects. The question is basically asking 'Is this project still alive?' which I suppose isn't really on topic
I answered it anyway as it was easy to do (and got me 'protect questions' privilege :))

I understand that we don't want to be game for "project support" style questions, but I also don't want to see us being all 'licensing' questions either.
And I've been seeing the latter a bit too much...

that was true in the early days too ...there are explicit meta questions about that
I remember arguing at one point that there could be a role for us as the place for FOSS projects to offer support. It would almost certainly drive up the stats
(google hits etc)

9:45 PM
Yes, and that's where a good bulk of questions around Open Source are
It's tricky though - you don't want to be sort of the "official" forum for random open source projects if you get what I mean
Again, issues and feature requests should stay at the repos, and whatever is left could easily just be discussion.
Of course, this is just all assumptions

Yep - as I say, I argues it before and got a pretty definitive consenus from the community (as was)

Q: What should our site goals be?

ArtOfCodeAfter some small amount of discussion on this meta post and here in chat, I have a question for the community here. What are our goals? As a Stack Exchange site, we're here to answer on-topic questions about free/open projects to the highest quality possible. But is that all we are? kdopen su...

Let me go through that :)

yep - I posted two answers from different viewpoints - one got +1 the other -3

Hmm... @Martijn's answer suggests to be goal free - and to focus more on quality, rather than nitpicking at the scope (as I see it). Basically, make a useful site for the entire open source audience.

which nicely avoids a definition of what is 'useful' for the entire audience (and who is in that audience)

9:53 PM
@RubberDuck believes our primary purpose should be to connect though involved with floss, and list seven topics that go from licensing, to development problems, to hardware, to "indoor farming" (I'm scared to click that link) - but also goes up in arms saying not to care about other sites' scopes.

Note his comment that " Let's define our scope with the purpose of being the place to get an answer about any and all things free and open."
I actually upvoted his answer back then :)

I agree with that :)

Which would make the FDM question on-topic
(need to go to a meeting for an hour or so)
Hopefully we can relaunch this discussion on meta

The reason why licensing questions are so prevalent are because it was "hot" in private beta, easy to make a hypothetical for, and one where because it was called an 'open-source' licence made the scope indisputable there
@kdopen Sure! I'll see if I can start one. Have fun at your meeting :P
Hey it's @quartata :)

Hello.
Just checking in to make sure you guys haven't died yet.

10:00 PM
lol, we're not dying :D
I wouldn't let that happen!

in The Nineteenth Byte, 2 hours ago, by Alex A.
It was yolk
Anyways.
How come you don't have a "posts on main" feed?

What do you mean?
We do.... I think
Let me check...
Oh crap, we don't.
Let me figure out how to do this

Zizouz212 has made a change to the feeds posted into this room

Did it work?

I don't know.
We'll have to wait until someone posts a question.
Actually wait

10:07 PM
I just put http://opensource.stackexchange.com/questions where it said feed or something like that

http://opensource.stackexchange.com/feeds
This is the link you want
I'm pretty sure it has to be an RSS feed

Let's do that :)
You're probably smarter than I am :)

no I just checked the Nineteenth Byte's feeds to see how Doorknob/<insert mod name> did it

Still probably better :)
How do I do this again...

There

sorry

I think

10:10 PM
Oh, you want it as a ticker?

I don't know.
What's the difference?

Also I think you lost the Open Source Initiative one

Maybe not.

There!
I think!
I'm so bad at stuff.... -_-
No.
I deleted one of the important feeds!
Damn it.
Oh no.
@quartata Help me!
How do I undo?

I don't think you can.
You'll have to put OSI back up I suppose

And how do I do that?
I'll ask all you smart people at PPCG
Oh my god!

@quartata That?

10:17 PM
@Zizouz212 ye

Here goes nothing :)

3/5 questions are downvoted questions. Not reassuring.

Zizouz212 has made a change to the feeds posted into this room

I think I did it :)

Are you in need of some fancy low-poly feed avatars?

10:19 PM
I was trying to add something, but screwed something else up.
This is why I shouldn't be in charge of things...

@Zizouz212 You should move all the feed trash to the Trashcan

There's a trashcan?
Where?

Well, there's the private trashcan

What buttons do I click?

And then there's also the public trash

10:20 PM
@ArtOfCode Help me!

move messages button

Where's that?

room -> move messages

It's only letting me select one message at a time...
@ArtOfCode I demand you to come and fix this mess!

use ctrl-click

10:22 PM
ctrl-click?
I can try...

@Zizouz212 Would if I was on a computer. See the room menu under the avatars on the right?

@ArtOfCode Thank god you're here.

Shift click the first and the last message.

I clearly let myself be in charge here.

Move them to trashcan.

10:24 PM
It's not doing anything...

you have to select the room after

But seriously, if you want some 16x16 feed avatars, I can hook you up. I drew avatars for all of the 19th Byte feeds. :)

Wait what?
@ArtOfCode You have to do this!

Shift click first and last. Click move in the menu. Type trashcan. Click select, or move, whatever it's called.

@ArtOfCode wait mods automagically get access to the trashcan
I've been trying to get access to the trashcan for over 3 months

10:26 PM
Wait, I think I'm up to something
It's called Trash?

@quartata No can do. I'd say sure, but it contains deleted stuff from TL.
@Zizouz212 Trashcan. It's private.

@ArtOfCode It does?

@quartata Yep.

1 message moved to Trash
Ooh! I did it!
Oh no.
I didn't.

Congratulations, next time use trashcan

10:28 PM
Dorknoob said that regular room owners have gotten access to the trashcan in the past
I guess he clearly was drunk on Nethack eh

Wait, what's the difference between Trash and Trashcan?

@Zizouz212 One is private.

It is only since recently. I should go review the access controls.

Mods and super-elite people use the Trashcan. Sad, lonely plebians use the Trash.
@ArtOfCode Huh.

I'm really confused.
I should not do this... I'll end up deleting the entire room
Oh crap.
I put the wrong feed.
I got this, don't worry :)

10:33 PM
I'll fix it all up tomorrow.

@ArtOfCode Speaking of which, the conversation above this mess is one you should read

@quartata Access list reviewed. Sorry :) you're one of about 20 people I just denied access.
@Zizouz212 Also tomorrow.

@ArtOfCode </3
;;;;;_;;;;;;;

Sure, as long as you read it. It's about the FDM question and general scope with projects
Wlah
Ummm... What just happened?

Er you just added this room's stars to the feed list

10:37 PM
I did?
I seriously need help.
I can't be left in charge anymore.
Mods have too many privileges.

Hey! That's cool! Good call!

@RubberDuck What was a good call?

The feeds.

Oh, they've been there before.
I just screwed things up.

Btw, window farms is a really cool way open source can apply to non-software. You should really check out their Ted talk.

Clearly, I let myself be in charge...

Awe inspiring.
Lol

Oh god.
