@Quill parent/child scope is pretty easy
scopes works via prototypal inheritance
So child scope is "this", parent scope is the parent of "this"
 
yeah, it didn't seem hard
 
At any rate, what you've got there is applying a class based on an expression.
That's not what ng-if is for.
ng-if removes elements from the DOM if the expression is falsey
 
I use ng-if in my code for two different element types
<input ng-if="model.isNew" ng-model="model.username">
<span ng-if="!model.isNew" mg-model="model.username"></span>
 
That looks fine to me
