Q: Is Lakshmi an avatar of Durga?

K Vickneshvara I read that Lakshmi is the Avatar of Durga in this article: Gauri is seen as a milder form of Kali, which is why she wears a saree and ties her hair with a string of flowers. Sometimes, she comes as a single woman, and sometimes in a pair: the Jyestha Gauri (elder Gauri) and Kanishtha Ga...

Q: What are the permissible numbers for japa count that are less than 108?

RickrossIt is well known that when you do a mantra japa 108 is the minimum number of times you should do to get the wholesome benefit of the japa.Sometimes,a higher number ,1008, is also recommended. But my question is,when there is so much scarcity of time that you can't even do the ideal number 108 th...

Q: Is Naradha Muni is Mischief Maker as Depicted

blakcapsFew South Indian movies portrays Naradha muni as mischief maker involving in creating quarrels between Devi's of Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma & Lord MahaVishnu. He also involves in creating fights between deva's and the asura's. Vaishnavas describes him as a elevated soul devoted to Narayana bhakthi....

@Mr_Green @AnkitSharma It was quite a journey. My family lives in Chennai, but at the time Chennai was inundated by heavy flooding and the airport was closed. So first we were stranded in the Delhi airport. Then we took a light from Delhi to Bangalore, and in Bangalore we stayed in my aunt's house. (She wasn't in India at the time, so her house was empty). Then we hired a car and we went from Bangalore to my Mom's native village of Poondi, Tamil Nadu, which I discuss here:
2
Q: Are there any low-caste Vaikhanasa priests?

Keshav SrinivasanI recently learned that the priest of the Vishnu temple in my native village of Poondi is a low-caste person. The notion of a low-caste person serving in a temple didn't surprise me, since in the Sri Vaishnava sect it's a well-established practice for low-caste people who have performed Sharanag...

@Mr_Green @AnkitSharma Then my family drove from Chennai to Poondi and picked us up, taking us back to Chennai. In any case, almost a week of my trip was lost in all that travel, but in the time I had left I got to visit quite a few cool temples, for instance the Veeraraghava Perumal temple in Thiruvallore, which I discuss here:
7
Q: What scriptures describe Vishnu marrying a rebirth of a golden Sita statue?

Keshav SrinivasanI'm currently visiting India, and I just went to my Mom's Kula Devata, the Veeraraghava Perumal Vishnu Temple in Thiruvallore. Many things have happened in this location over the ages, including Vishnu reteaching the Vedas to Brahma after he forgot it due to his fifth head being cut off (which I...

@Mr_Green @AnkitSharma And I passed by a Mariamman temple which was visited by the goddess Mariamman herself:
0
Q: What scriptures describe Parashurama's mother's head being attached to a low-caste woman's body?

Keshav SrinivasanI'm currently visiting India, and as I was leaving my native village of Poondi (which I discuss in my questions here and here), I passed by a temple which was built at a location visited by the goddess Mariamman. Mariamman is a goddess worshipped primarily in Tami Nadu. Her temples are kept on...

@Mr_Green @AnkitSharma And I visited Ramanujacharya's birthplace of Sriperumbudur, which led me to post this question:
3
Q: Did Krishna's devotee Uttanka ever attain Moksha?

Keshav SrinivasanI am currently visiting India, and I just went to the Adi Keshava Perumal Vishnu Temple in Sri Perumbudur, the birthplace of the famous Sri Vaishnava Acharya Ramanujacharya. On the walls of this temple are depicted the Divya Desams, the 108 sacred places of Vishnu which I discuss in my question ...

@Mr_Green @AnkitSharma I also posted one more question about Sriperumbudur:
1
Q: What scriptures describe Vishnu freeing the Bhutas from the curse of Shiva?

Keshav SrinivasanI just came back from a trip to India, and one of the places I visited was Sri Perumbudur. As I discuss here, it is the birthplace of the famous Sri Vaishnava Acharya Ramanujacharya. But my question about the Vishnu temple here, the great Adi Keshava Perumal temple. The story of this temple is...

@Mr_Green @AnkitSharma And I visited the birthplace of the Tamil Vaishnava poet-saint Thieumazhisai Alwar:
0
Q: Why did Thirumazhisai Alwar never sing about Thirumazhisai?

Keshav SrinivasanI just came back from a trip to India, and one of the temples I visited was the Madhya Jagannatha Vishnu temple in Thirumazhisai. Most people only know about the Jagannatha temple in Puri (which I discuss here), but there are two other Jagannatha temples in Thirumazhisai and Thirupullani. But m...

@Mr_Green @AnkitSharma And I visited by Dad's native village of Kuchanoor:
1
Q: What scriptures describe Shani as having six eyes?

Keshav SrinivasanI just came back from a trip to India, and one of the places I visited was my dad's native village of Kuchanoor. It's the site of the famous Kuchanoor Shanishwaran temple, one of the few temples in the world for Shani, god of the planet Saturn. For those who don't know, Shani is the son of Surya,...

@Mr_Green @AnkitSharma Finally I visited the place where Kartikeya and Devasena got married:
2
Q: What scriptures mention the location of Kartikeya's marriage to Devasena?

Keshav SrinivasanAs I discuss in this answer, Shiva's son Kartikeya, aka Skanda or Muruga, has two wives, Valli and Devasena. Now I just came back from a trip to India, and one of the places I visited was the Thirupparamkunram Kartikeya temple, which is the place where Kartikeya married Devasena. For those who ...

@Mr_Green @AnkitSharma And I also visited a bunch of places I didn't write about, including the Varaha and Venkateshwara temples in Tirupati, the Meenakshi and Kal Azhagar temples in Madurai, and the Kabalishwara temple in Chennai. But I basically used this site as my travel journal :-)

2:24 PM
@Mr_Green @AnkitSharma And I got a whole bunch of Hinduism books:

haha
@KeshavSrinivasan nice linking :)
I hope you would have visited Telangana, we could have met

OMG
@KeshavSrinivasan Quite religious trip.

yeah a lot.. I don't know how it feels like though

@KeshavSrinivasan On the side note Delhi is my birth place and Bangalore is my work place and you covered both ;)

I did once went for 10 days trip near tirupathi on temple visiting spree

2:33 PM
@Mr_Green I actually visited Hyderabad and Secunderabad a year ago for my cousin's wedding. Does that count as Andhra Pradesh or Telengana? Does Tirupati count as Andhra Pradesh or Telengana?

It is now Telangana, and I live in Hyderabad
lets hope to meet you next then

@Mr_Green Oh, then I could have visited you last year.

:(
np :)

4 people in this room together.....seems like highest count of the year.

@AnkitSharma Haha yeah, all my trips to India tend to be religious.

2:35 PM
who made AnkitSharma mod? did you bribe someone?

@Mr_Green I won election over Movies.se to become mod.
@KeshavSrinivasan Hmmm..

@KeshavSrinivasan any idea why everyone pointing to moderation on meta?
@Pandya Welcome
After a long time we are talking here.. feeling good :)

"Not many active users to answer the questions." Right @Mr_Green. I think this is because one require sufficient knowledge which I think most of missing and/or we 've not sufficient knowledgeable persons. By the way I am not giving/spending time to this community. But I will try....

@AnkitSharma That's what I like about India, it has so many divinely created statues and temples where important Hindu stories took place. I wish there could be a country with the standard of living of America but with the sacred places of India. Hopefully India will be that country one day...

@Pandya yeah even I don't have sufficient knowledge in this field
we can just share this site on social networks or approach some guru personally
that is all I can think

2:40 PM
Catch u all later,.....need to leave office.

Also community missing a person like this for 10 months

FYI, there is Keshav who got decent knowledge in this field and also he is moderator too

yes @Mr_Green I am planning to visit this site al least once in day now....

I don't know about Jabahar. didn't hear of him these days

@Mr_Green "any idea why everyone pointing to moderation on meta?" It's because two of our four moderators have been inactive for some time. But there will be an announcement on that subject soon.

2:42 PM
but still you guys are managing it very well.. right?
@Pandya Great
@AnkitSharma ok bye.. I need to leave too.

@Mr_Green Yeah, we are managing it will, but it will be even better once we get one more mod to assist us. Like I said an announcement will be made soon.

Yes, I think he is only @KeshavSrinivasan who giving his lots of time for this community and also have great knowledge.

@Pandya yeah.. in other words. It is his own site. :)

this site should be renamed to keshav.stackexchange.com :P
I knew @KeshavSrinivasan !!

@Pandya haha

@KeshavSrinivasan By the what are your areas of interest regarding to Hinduism?
Dinner time for me in India, leaving now.....

3:03 PM
@Pandya Well, my areas of interest in Hinduism are shown pretty clearly if you look at my questions on the site. Most of my questions fall into the following three categories: 1. Questions about Hindu mythology 2. Questions about the Sri Vaishnava sect (which I belong to) 3. Questions about the various Vedantic philosophies and their associated commentaries on the Brahma Sutras.
@Pandya And also questions about the Vedas.
@Pandya If I were to summarize all that, I'd say my interests in Hinduism are more about the theoretical aspects than the practical aspects. I am a practicing Hindu, but intellectually I don't focus on learning about practical aspects as much.

3:32 PM
@Pandya Did he said anything? I mean he left us completely ?
@Pandya Dinner, this soon

Q: Can we unify tags 'incarnation', 'avatar' and 'avatars'?

sv.Can the mods unify tags avatar, avatars and incarnation? The current description of avatar is better than the other two, so better make them synonyms of the former. Related question: Why two tags for Avatar?

@EshanSingh Use of copied content without reference is not allowed even in Tag wiki description

Q: Would it be OK to paste content from Wikipedia into a popular empty tag-wiki?

Mark RogersAssuming that you could make a nice tag-wiki simply by pasting and editing content from Wikipedia, is there any problem with doing something like that? There are a lot of empty tag wikis that would be better off with default content from Wikipedia rather than an empty wall. This would at least ...

4:32 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan Most of his tag wiki edit are exact Wikipedia copy paste ^
@Vishu Hi

@AnkitSharma Thanks, I'll take a look at it.
@AnkitSharma So have you watched any more Lost?

@KeshavSrinivasan No, got stuck in Arrow/Flash/Legend of tomorrow
Maybe watch some tomorrow and coming weekend

@AnkitSharma Oh, those are all shows on the CW network. CW shows are generally not as good as shows on the main broadcast networks, like ABC, NBC, and FOX.

I Like superhero shows

@AnkitSharma Have you watched Gotham? It's a prequel series to Batman. It's similar in visuals and tone to the Christopher Nolan Batman movies.
@AnkitSharma And it's a FOX show, so it has a bigger budget than shows like the Flash and Arrow. Another superhero show I watch is Daredevil, which is a Netflix original series.

4:47 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan Yup
Season 1 had too many isshues
2nd is bit better
Daredevil and jessica jones were good
But i am more into DC then marvel

@AnkitSharma I do like Gotham Season 2, but I don't know why they invented this Theo Galavan character.

@KeshavSrinivasan Gotham has serious issue with writing, its too good sometime and too bad sometime. Arrow is far better managed in writing

@AnkitSharma Yeah, I like the DC movies better than the Marvel movies. Marvel is making movies about all these obscure superheroes no one has heard of, like the Deadpool movie coming this month. DC has a set of more recognizable superheroes, like Superman, Batman, and Wonderwoman.
@AnkitSharma Although I think the upcoming Batman vs Superman movie will probably not be that good. Certainly not as good as the Christopher Nolan Batman movies.

Deadpool is quite famous in comic world, it was demanded by fan from long and more after lame appearance in X-en origin: Wolverine
@KeshavSrinivasan I am into it and loved the trailer, seems better then Civil war to me but going for both

@AnkitSharma Oh, I only knew Deadpool from the X-Men origins movie.
@AnkitSharma I don't like all these Avengers movies, like I watched Avengers 2 in theaters and they just kept showing action scene after action scene. The only Marvel movies I like are the X-Men movies and the Spider-Man movies. And that too I liked the original Spider-Man movies not the Amazing Spider-Man.
@Ankit The only other Marvel movie I liked was the 2003 Hulk movie, I didn't like the Incredible Hulk.

5:00 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan He is funny (over funny), breaks forth wall and regenerate way faster and use swords like hell
@KeshavSrinivasan I hated amazing spider man and i am too happy its rebooted again.
@KeshavSrinivasan Are you reading my mind.

@AnkitSharma haha

I liked Winter soldier more then any avenger and iron man film or all MCU films

@AnkitSharma They should have just continued the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies. Marvel reboots things too much. Like I liked the original Fantastic Four movies better than the reboot they made last year.
@AnkitSharma Oh, I haven't watched Winter Soldier.

@KeshavSrinivasan Its great, Best MCU film

@AnkitSharma Do I need to watch Avengers 1 to understand Winter Soldier? Because I've only watched Avengers 2.

5:05 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan Tobey film is long canceled and AMazing spider man didn't liked by hardcore fans, so now Sony and Disney merging together to make new spider man
I am more positive for this version. I hate sony, Disney have way better mind
@KeshavSrinivasan No, you should know about SHIELD, Captain america 1 and black widow

@AnkitSharma I think the thing about Spider-Man is that it's supposed to be set during Peter Parker's high-school years, so whenever the actor becomes too old they keep rebooting it with a teenage guy.

SHIELD have big part in it

@AnkitSharma That's what I don't like about Marvel, they require so much knowledge just to understand it. It's the same problem I had with the Bourne movies. Like I watched the Bourne trilogy, but I had forgotten a lot of it, and then when I watched Bourne Legacy I couldn't follow the plot.

@KeshavSrinivasan Spider man have good story after teen age too but Sony is too dumb and they can't retain director for too long. Toby film were canceled because the director was pissed. He didn't liked the Studio over interfere
Sam raimi didn't even wanted to introduce Venom in Spider man too but sony forced him to do so and Spider man 3 was too disliked by fans too.

@AnkitSharma I wish Hollywood would stop making all these sequels and prequels and just make fresh stories. But they don't want to take risks.

5:10 PM
Same happen for new fantastic four, studio vs director, first half of the film was good until studio changed the second half story.

@AnkitSharma Yeah, Spider-Man 3 wasn't nearly as good as Spider-Man 2.

@KeshavSrinivasan I love sequel/prequel films, but the problem is always with director vs studio fights.
Director version are mostly better, studios are mostly money hungry

@AnkitSharma Well, studio interference has been a problem for a long time. Like the studio forced so many changes to Superman 2, which led to Richard Donner leaving half-way through and another director being hired.

Lol, this room look like Screening room now.

@AnkitSharma Have you watched Richard Donner's director's cut of Superman 2? It's like 10 times better than the theatrical version.
@AnkitSharma haha

5:14 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan I am not into old superman films. And i didn't liked superman return eitehr. I liked Man of steel and i didn't hate it like most of the internet
@KeshavSrinivasan No watched superman 1 only. Then superman returns and man of steel
skipped rest

@AnkitSharma I thought the old Superman movies were fantastic. Yeah, I didn't like Superman Returns either. Man of Steel was ok, but it was a disappointment because I had such high expectations after watching the Christopher Nolan Batman movies, so I thought a Christopher Nolan Superman movie was going to be amazing. But Nolan only executive produced Man of Steel.

Have you watched Watchmen?

@AnkitSharma No, I generally don't watch rated R movies. Like I heard Watchmen has nudity.

Watchmen is best superhero movie for me ever.
Its bit dark, dark then dark knight

@AnkitSharma But I've watched other movies based on Alan Moore comics: Van Helsing and League of Extraordinary Gentleman, which were both really bad, and then V. For Vendetta which was great.

5:20 PM
I don't remember nudity in it

@AnkitSharma I think the blue guy is naked for the entire movie.

@KeshavSrinivasan Almost but they have shown his thing once only
But go for extended version

@AnkitSharma Oh, what I've heard is they show his "thing" throughout the entire movie.

"Dr. Manhattan (although mostly CGI) is shown numerous times in the film completely naked in which his buttocks as well as his genitals (i.e. Penis) are clearly seen."
@AnkitSharma Yeah, this movie seems too inappropriate for my tastes.

5:24 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan Ohhhhh,
Search if they have any PG-13 version

@AnkitSharma No, they don't have a censored version unfortunately.

ohhh
You are missing a good film
