now that this has been applied i'm not sure it's so great. It seems to be mostly about finding and choosing destinations, which is what the tag is already about, and i think people have already questioned whether we need that one!

Each of our 73 sites has a common goal: to own their community. Taking ownership means (in part) figuring out how to promote the site, make it attractive to newcomers, and make the awesome content and community even more awesome. While we have internal- and external-facing teams of employees to help with this, Stack Exchange is fundamentally driven by the people who use it. Here are a couple of ways that two Stack Exchange communities have come up with to improve their sites.**

Answer-a-thon!

One of the things we pride ourselves on is the ridiculously high answer rates on our sites. (Some other  …

@Laura: Thanks, just looking at it :-)
We're also thinking a little bit about topical weeks (see meta) but nothing is fleshed out just yet.

@Martin Yeah, I had seen that. You guys are tackling a lot, it's really great.

Good point you raised about system messages, and using community ads instead

Yeah, it's something that's become a bit of a problem recently, but it clearly points to a need for you guys to be able to promote your meta announcements on the main site. We're talking here at the office about how we can do that - it'll probably be a while before you all see a new tool, but we're trying to come up with something that will fill that need so misusing system messages is a far weaker temptation in the future :)

Good to know. By the way, do you think that the guys on e.g. Graphic Design would look favourably upon a request to create a banner for us pro bono?
I wish we could also give rep, but I don't think we have a user on Travel-SE that is also active there

@MartinTapankov I'm not really familiar with the Graphic Design community...it probably doesn't hurt to ask.

okay, will look around there to test the waters

cool

Q: Open Source Advertising - Sidebar - 1H 2012

Grace NoteIt's time once again to support your favorite open source project through our Free Vote-Based Advertising for Open Source Projects. We are clearing the leader boards to start the first half of 2012 anew. Here is your chance to create a Free Vote-Based Advertisement for an Open Source Project. Cr...

like these
they are like advertising, but non-evil
various SE sites use them to promote related projects or websites, and are created by the community, not by SE staff

8:18 PM
not a bad idea, but no we don't have yet immo

yeah, I was thinking to suggest it as a feature request
what do you think?
see this for a draft on my meta post: docs.google.com/document/d/…

8:44 PM
i like it!
nice effort

okay, will wait for one or two more opinions and will post it
better to have support upfront when making feature requests

yes

Q: Free java data visualization library?

RoflcoptrI'm looking for a free Java library to visualize some data. I want to do something similar as the following two images. Is there any possibility? I first thought of prefuse, but this isn't developed since 2007. So any oher libraries?

9:53 PM
@Laura - thanks for the Travel.SE mention!
@Roflcoptr - your latest question looks like a duplicate?

hmm yes i noticed that i had asked a very similar question already

Any issues with me marking it as a duplicate? I can't see enough differentiation as it stands, and certainly position in the ship etc was answered in the other on

yes
i just deleted it

lol
thanks for that

yeah it was a stupid error
wasn't really thinking :D
my research for java open source visualization libraaries is confusing my mind :D

10:28 PM
@MartinTapankov @Roflcoptr beta sites currently do not have community ads, but make the feature request! i'd like to see them available for everybody, so the more people who ask for them, the more likely it is that beta sites will get them

11:18 PM
very well
thanks laura
so martin i think you could post

11:49 PM
