Hey, @eimyr, @Derpy, @BESW and @doppelgreener - new game map for my players :)

http://imgur.com/gallery/jPem4Pc/new

12:49 AM
i am now jealous of your map.
and players too.

1 hour later…
2:02 AM
@eimyr Maybe GURPS? I've heard a lot of good things about GURPS Martial Arts from people who theoretically know what they're talking about.
GURPS books about things that are real tend towards the "we don't care if it's fun, we want to simulate reality" end of roleplaying.

1 hour later…
3:07 AM
@DuckTapeAl yeah, I'm still looking for a chance to give GURPS a shot :)

3:33 AM
@Shalvenay Well, if I ever end up starting an online GURPS game again, I'll be sure to contact you. :P

@DuckTapeAl alrighty then

4:19 AM
Any Esperanto speakers about?

My grandmother spoke it, but I never became fluent.

4:52 AM
I almost can't believe anyone bothered to learn it
I mean, I can definitely see the possible usefulness of knowing it, but seeing as no one grew up speaking it,..... there are certain incentives missing

5:25 AM
Yeahhhh.

it isn't that it would have been useless to learn it when it was made,..... but it only would have been useful if everyone had actually bought into it, which clearly didn't happen
XD
and I don't really blame anyone for thinking it might have been a silly idea either
it might have been a great idea if it had worked, but it did not

5:47 AM
@trogdor Yeah, but if humanity was really going to adopt a universal language, it should obviously be Lojban.

lol
I think part of it's downfall was also the same thing that was supposed to be it's selling point

Conlangs are cool and all, but when humanity eventually has a universal language it'll be the result of long organic processes (and it won't automagically replace local languages; the concept of an auxiliary language is a good one and something we've seen develop in pockets throughout history).

@BESW part of my point is that the very fact that it was artificially created helped make it as unsuccessful as it was

yeah.
And I think auxiliary conlangs are valuable for what we learn from the experiments, even if they aren't going to provide the solution by themselves.

6:01 AM
I can definitely see us having a "universal language" eventually, but certainly not as long as there are still plenty of countries only looking out for themselves, and I don't exclude mine from that category

That's why an auxiliary language is much more likely in the short term; a language everyone speaks in addition to their local tongue, rather than instead of.
Latin, French, and British English have served that role for parts of the world in the past, and American English is seen as the lingua franca by many emerging countries--it's the reason my Korean ESL students are here.
English is "the language of business." Which isn't the same as a universal auxiliary language, but it's another example of the concept in action within a narrower arena.

6:25 AM
I did it.
I cast a close vote.

[applause]

I do not normally have the courage to do this thing
so I sincerely applaud your courage

Q: Is it possible to have a Eidolon that is also a weapon?

HonedgeAre there any rules for using another character as a weapon? Specifically an Eidolon. From what little I can find on the topic the weapon PC would count as an improvised weapon of some club variety. Seeing as how the player can more or less dictate the appearance of an Eidolon, I really like the ...

7:26 AM
@BESW best part is when after thinking that the quote about the statue mouth trap was made up, someone in the comments find it in a fan rewrite of the module.
Now I wonder...when and who rewrote the module. It would be even better if the author of the rewrite is the same that posted the fake quote in the first place.
Anyway, I still remember that once in an oversea magazine called Inquest I saw some advertisements about a D&D adventure module aimed at "killing your characters". I seem to recall it was in the "migrate to 4e" era, and so the module was claiming to "make the player conversion easier by removing the players".
Anyone saw that?
The ads had a picture of cleaning tools in the background . Brooms, dish-soap and the like...

7:41 AM
lol

Nothing. Can't find it. Unless it was...
nope, can't be "The apocalypse stone" - that was for 2nd edition.

8:24 AM
> GENTLE PERSUASION
Function: Wide-spray flame thrower
Flaw: No safeties
- You can target your entire zone at once with Combat actions, excluding yourself.
- While using Gentle Persuasion, each time your Combat rolls would create a boost you must upgrade it to a fire-related aspect with no free invokes.

9:03 AM
@BESW lol XD

9:23 AM
@BESW lovely spell name
@smurfton <3

2 hours later…
11:02 AM
@BESW kinda wish I had a unicorn to cast a motivation spell to help me with my piano practicing XD

11:15 AM
Hello
@BESW I propose a new flamethrower stunt for your game: Sniper flamethrower +2 when Carefully attacking an enemy in another zone with a weapon of inappropriate range.
Also known as Long-range crowbar

lol

what's up @trogdor ?

not much right now
listening to music mostly
looking at chat every once in a while

nice
whatcha listenin' to?

currently a bunch of different things from Breath of Fire 3

11:25 AM
(also, why do I think of Mage: Ascension whenever I listen to any electro-swing?)
Breath of Fire?
3?
Is that a game?

yes
it is a game
not exactly a new one though

well, good music do not age

yeah

oh, console
why did I not expect that?

well, you probably expected it to be a PC game
to be fair, the easiest way to play it now is to emulate it on a PC XD

11:27 AM
Well, I forget consoles are a thing.

which I have done

Also, I forget JRPGs are a thing.

hee
they are a thing, yes

I never unsterstood the appeal of JRPGs and turn-based combat genre. Even though I love turn-based games to death.

I like listening to BoF 3 music partly because it is often surprisingly appropriate for the current situation, on top of being good music

11:29 AM
Anyway!

@eimyr eh, isn't for everyone

Do you usually listen to game soundtracks?

no big deal there
a lot yeah
some other things too, but I think game soundtracks outnumber the other stuff

do you have... erm... ones I might be familiar with?

uh, I mean that depends?
I don't know all the games you have played
have you played Undertale or listened to any music from it?
that is one of the newer/more currently popular ones I like a lot of the music from

11:32 AM
nope

@eimyr To be fair, not all JRPGs are turn-based.

That's the thing - I mostly play widely acclaimed mainstream games.

@eimyr I do not play a lot of those lately
XD

@Miniman Which is something I'm aware of, also not all turn-based games are JRPGs. I tend to collate them subconsciously in my mind, even if on some level I am capable of discerning them.

@eimyr Fair enough, there's a large number of games that I think of as falling into the JRPG category despite not actually being J.

11:34 AM
have you ever played The Binding of Isaac?
that has some pretty cool music in it

nope
I also don't play indie games save for some very rare exceptions.

Bloodborne?
to be fair, I mostly like the one single thing from that, but I do like the one thing at least

I know what it is, haven't played.
My PC is too old and weak to handle games past 2012
The last games I've played were Borderlands 2 and Crusader Kings 2

I have not played Bloodborne either, to be fair

I watched my housemate play it

11:38 AM
but I have heard some of it's music, and I like the Cleric Beast's theme

It's a great spectator game

@Polyducks yeah it is XD

I also tried Deus Ex: HR, but I didn't quite like it all that much

Binding of Isaac is a really pretty game
I have it on the WiiU as well as Steam. A really good rogue-like.

I don't play Isaac too much anymore

11:39 AM
Do you guys ever find yourself watching let's plays as if they were movies?

and I have a pretty old version of it besides
@Polyducks a bit, sometimes

What I have in my "when I upgrade my setup" backlog is: Witcher 3, DA: Inquisition, Shadow of Mordor and likely some new pretty shooter of some sort
@Polyducks never. I loathe Let's plays.

Ah, speaking of weird indie games, I'm playing an MMO at the moment called Kwaan which is about working together to build a tree out of pixels.
@eimyr Aren't you a ray of sunshine.

Actually I stopped reading your question halfway through :)

kthx
Shadow of Mordor is great
Random orc generation works really well!

11:41 AM
@Polyducks Huh. That's the first time I've heard anyone say anything good about it. What's it like? I was interested in playing it when it came out.

@Miniman I must admit the actual story is quite short and the longevity of it is somewhat hindered - but the combat, the power it makes you feel and the sneaking really makes it worth playing

@eimyr lol

@Miniman It really makes the player feel like they earn the xp they're given, and there's a great nemesis system where, if you fatally wound an enemy they reappear with the scars from your last encounter.

@Polyducks Hmmm...I've yet to experience a stealth system I've enjoyed. Still, if I see it on special I might go for it.

11:44 AM
@Miniman Shadow of Mordor is Batman: Arkham splat in LotR setting

That said, I spend a lot of time in game development and I purposefully play games with bad reviews to see where they've gone wrong and I've managed to get into the rut of playing bad games and enjoying them for their badness.
@eimyr pretty much, yes. What's a splat?

asterisk
also known as Cat's Other End
*
My usage comes from splatbook, which was a term coined for the common names for various Word of Darkness expansions, which followed the naming convention of *book: Name

Oh. Okay.

E.g. Clanbook: Lasombra or Tradition Book: Euthanatos

Anyone know a place on the internet that is nothing but sunshine and rainbows? I could really use that right now.

11:47 AM
Have you tried 4chan?

doesn't seem like an appropriate suggestion XD

I could try miiverse but it's not really any fun without being able to draw.

Well. Actually this right here seems to be the happiest and softest community.

this chat is a pretty great place

It's a step up, there's no doubting that.
There is a great amount of factual opinion residue, though.

11:48 AM
not sure if I could necessarily say it is all sunshine and rainbows, but I like it here XD
@Polyducks yeah, this is a thing

factual opinion residue, could you explain?

at least some of the time

I think I've got it, but I'd rather not guess.

Just trying to keep myself off the roof. My workplace is so miserable.
and meds have been cut in half
Factual Opinion is a term I have just coined.
It's where someone states their opinion as fact, regardless of personal tastes or alternatives and often results in arguing the toss.

@Polyducks I figured as much

11:51 AM
Is that a sort of a state of eagerness to engage in a debate about a topic which one is opinionated in, while having very strong convictions about the validity of the opinions?

The residue part is because it's leakage from Stack Overflow where the user's stack/method/hipster.js is just the right solution, and the only solution.

oh
I don't get that vibe here

As I say, it's residual.
Anyway, onto brighter topics - what does everyone's week consist of? What RPG things have you got to look forward to?

not much RPG happening till the end of the week here

@Polyducks Starting a new job tomorrow, nervous as hell. But the group I DM for is meeting on Friday, so that's something to look forward to.

11:53 AM
@Miniman That's great! Is it far to go? Is it doing something you love?

but it's always nice on the weekends to meet up with everyone and continue our main campaign, or try something new out

@trogdor I've got until Wednesday to wait for our game
No wait...Thursday.

@Polyducks Very close by, doing a range of things some of which I will hopefully love.

@Miniman are you a developer, by chance?
@trogdor are you a player or DM?

@Polyducks ish.

11:56 AM
@Polyducks usually I am playing
sometimes I am GMing

I'm looking forward to the next campaign. The players have essentially swarmed their land with Goblins as the result of a wish from a justice Goddess that went bad. They're going to try and evacuate.
Because they're level 4/6 it'll be no problem to slay the goblins, but it's a large number and the amount of corpses is attracting necromancers.
also, @eimyr new easteregg added into an old js file haha media.clothingsites.co.uk/media/clientstyles/bbclient.js

@Polyducks Tomorrow there is my HEMA lesson and on Friday DnD 5e.
@trogdor who do you play in that game again?
btw, where is @BESW?
It's unlike him to be absent from chat.

12:39 PM
I was at a Ruhi group meeting.
We're trying to start a weekly Tuesday-night gathering for study circle facilitators.

What's Ruhi? @BESW
What's HEMA? @eimyr

@Polyducks Historic European Martial Arts
@Polyducks Swordfighting lessons with a "real fight" perspective.

12:56 PM
Aha, hence craving an RPG with a realistic sword fighting system

Yeah.

brb, eating my feelings :)
and pretending to work haha

From what I've seen it's either high abstraction realism or mechanistic fantasy. Not a mechanistic realism.

morning

hi
what's up?

12:59 PM
@Polyducks The Ruhi Institute in Colombia publishes a series of training books, inspired by the teachings of the Bahá'í Faith, which give individuals tools and structures for social and spiritual transformation in their areas. It's being used throughout the world, by Bahá'ís and non-Bahá'ís alike.

my acid reflux...hehe. Actually I wanted to run an idea past whoever is here.

@DavidWilkins Listening!

go

@BESW I think I remember this conversation :)

I have a necromancer who lost two skeletons in battle last night (D&D 5e) and I was wondering how I should treat whether or not he can collect the bones to reanimate them. I haven't found anything RAW saying he cannot, but obviously if they took physical damage, some of the bones will no longer be intact
I was thinking something along the lines of 5% of the bones are damaged per death, and if fewer than 75% remain, you need more bones to complete the skeleton again
He's not abusing his character's power, I am just looking for a "common sense" type of ruling

1:02 PM
Well, what's the story here?
I generally go for "What's an interesting story?" over "What's realistic?"
If it's obviously more interesting for him to have his skeletons back quickly, or for him to be without them for a while and/or need to get new ones, don't roll at all: go with the thing that's not boring.

Generally speaking, for terms of balance, I would call the skeletons incomplete and require that he finds new skeletons. Once it has been damaged beyond its life, there is no chance of reconstruction because the fundementals of what made it no longer 'are'.

But if you're looking for realism, you could have a d6 chart for limbs/torso/head and get him to roll on that to see which parts are damaged. Then maybe he can combine the skeletons to re-animate them.
But in general, necromancy is meant to be fueled by death. Wastage and being worried about needing to kill again to get new skeletons wouldn't worry me as a necromancer.

@Polyducks I like the idea of a limbs/torso/head chart, but that seems to not jive with the "flavor" of 5e mechanics.

For reference, my sources are 2E/OSRIC/homebrew, so ymmv.

and I agree that "fueled by death" fits, and so does my player

@DavidWilkins Are you looking for an official ruling, or one which is fun to play?

1:06 PM
I don't think there is anything official in 5e for this

How about this: The necromancer has been reviving stuff all the time. He knows how to cope without a few bones! However, the magic might be weakened by insufficient material components.

In the other versions of DnD, a slain skeleton is slain. They are animated bones. However, you have to ask - is he making skeletons or golems? If he's making golems then it doesn't matter what the skeletons consist of. If he's making skeletons they need to be the bones of a complete corpse.

I would say, that if the necromancer would have no problems replacing the bones with, say, animal bones, or random bits and bobs, just overlook it.
Also, a broken bone might be just as good as an intact one, it's magic we're talking about.

@eimyr True that. Especially if it's held up by magic, not muscles and tendons like a zombie.

@eimyr so no mechanic, just fluff it, as long as they're not only fighting oozes, he can find bones enough to reconstruct his minions

1:09 PM
...now I'm imagining the necromancer digging through a graveyard looking for a bone donor that's compatible with his existing skeletons.

However, if you want "bone shortage" to be a problem for the player, give his skeletons a penalty (to attack, to AC, you figure it out) that accumulates until he acquires a new skeleton.

If the player is concerned about not having skeletons and you'd rather not get into the nitty-gritty, just have him stop off at a graveyard or a bonepile when he needs to replace them.
@BESW That would be -awesome-

hehe
@eimyr we've already established that the locals would not be happy if they find out someone dug up granpa for his femur

@DavidWilkins Or maybe give him reason to hunt 'good, fresh specimens'.

I think it'd be halfway between combing a junked car lot for spare parts that fit your car, and looking for a bone marrow donor.

1:10 PM
That's the problem with being a necromancer, @DavidWilkins. It's frowned upon at best - and that's the danger of playing the class.
@BESW you could judge it by taste.

@BESW I had a PC that was Frankenstein's monster. He shopped for body parts the way other characters shop for equipment. "Oooh, you're a fine man! Such strong arms, and those fingers! Exquisite! Can I invite you to the tavern for a drink, or are you too busy?"

Amazing

interesting

@DavidWilkins I guess it all comes down to your campaign's flavour. There's no 'right' answer. I think there could be some great roleplay from mixing and matching bones, but I think it could also introduce balance issues. However, if he's not abusing the system, what's the worry?

@eimyr ...that sounds like how my current PC usually greets random strangers.

1:14 PM
@BESW #hiddenMotives?

Hidden? No, she's just ridiculously flirty.

In the middle of an about-to-explode volcano, she stopped to hit on the fire elemental.
3
("What? He's hot.")

I saw that coming

hahaha
+400xp for BESW

1:16 PM
@BESW That was a Tzimisce vampire who became that when I ruled that he can use Vicissitude to graft foreign tissue to his undead flesh.

Actually, the line was (to another PC who was criticising Jessie's priorities), "Just because you can't pick up hot guys, doesn't mean I shouldn't."

I am astonished (different topic) at the poor degree of editing in Rise of Tiamat

@eimyr mega gross but super interesting :p
@davidwilkins I haven't read that. Is it a supplement?

It is book two of the Tyranny of Dragons campaign for 5th edition

@Polyducks You're not a WoD fan, so a breakdown: Tzimisce are an ancient clan of vampires who can (among other things) reshape bodies, by performing magical surgery on themselves or others. Even among other vampires they are considered absolute evil and complete monsters.

1:21 PM
things like (not word for word) "in this room are 6 yuan-ti, 3 malaisons, 3 abominations, and 3 purebred"

@DavidWilkins Ah, they skipped the last editorial pass.

@Polyducks Their largest achievement/ idee fixe is the Cathedral of Flesh and it's exactly what it sounds like. Yes, the building materials are still alive.

Made final tweaks to the numbers but didn't send it back for copy proofing.

other than that, it is a fairly fun campaign
at least from the DM side

@eimyr what sort of scale is a Cathedral of Flesh?
@eimyr how common are they?

1:29 PM
@DavidWilkins Important bit of advice: most parties are highly unlikely to fight the final boss. If this is an issue for you, you will need to spruce up the final room.

@DavidWilkins I've never read into the official storylines. I should take a look one day!
Just like I need to play paranoia and fate soon.

I'm still on the lookout for a free adventure that works using only Basic rules and effectively showcases 5e's strengths.

@BESW maybe with the DM's Guild, and the OGL SRD finally out, that can happen

@Polyducks Depending on the timeline, there might be one, two, half or none.

@DavidWilkins The DMs Guild doesn't include a filter for adventures - not promising.

1:32 PM
@Polyducks and they are, well, the size of a large cathedral. Or larger. It's not very well defined.

@Polyducks Faaaaate.

@Miniman they know there needs to be improvement. The reddit AMA regarding it seemed like there might be potential

@eimyr are they creatures, or static?
@BESW host it and I shall come.
@BESW I'm an easy date.

@Polyducks depending on timeline...

@Polyducks Why not both?

1:38 PM
@Polyducks The buiding blocks might still be sentient. The cathedrals as a whole are not supposed to be, but at least one of them got possessed by a demon and in another timeline one of them became a sort of a resurrection of the first Tzimisce vampire.
But as everything in WoD, it's debatable and up to the GM.

I'd like to play WoD - but does my character have to brood?
5

You build a giant flesh golem, you're really asking for something to come along that wants enfleshing.
@Polyducks For a more streamlined brooding experience, I suggest Katanas & Trenchcoats.

You're kidding, right?

Well, the Kender are a thing.
So I guess not.

1:42 PM
@Polyducks I suppose the entire Camarilla vs Sabbat conflict could be described as Brood War.

Seriously though K&T is pretty amazing. It's totally a tongue-in-cheek joke, but it's also totally a thoroughly playable and very fun tribute to the Highlander genre.

@Polyducks you don't have to brood, but it helps.

In K&T, one of your strongest healing moves is having a scene of angsty flashback to your past.

You know, the thing is that just like D&D is supposed to be awesome, Warhammer grimdark and Fate interesting, WoD is supposed to be theatrical
theatrical as in scenical, or played up

Hmm.
That's an interesting way to evaluate an engine.

1:51 PM
I don't know enough about WoD to comment on that part, but not all editions of D&D are supposed to be awesome.

"Choices and outcomes in this system should lead to [adjective] stories."
Yeah, most D&D editions are emphatically about being non-awesome at lower levels and having to earn your awesome by surviving the rat-skewering initiations.

@Magician I know it's an oversimplification. Sorry about that, I was trying to make a point about what is one of the axioms of WoD.
No less stemming from the fact that when the THC hits, you might be a bit over the top without noticing, and this stuff permeates your work too.

Heheh.

@Magician re: your Sabbat vs Camarilla... The entire premise of Mage: Ascension can summarised as "No, you're the bad guys!"

....Huh. Trying to think of a description of play that applies to D&D generically, I'm getting results like "complexity" and "density."
