9:00 PM
a spark plug making a conversation I can be involved in

Don't go down that road, at least not with that brand of spark plug
<Sponsor message goes here>

So your plan to make friends is to annoy people so they'll talk to you?
That is a terrible idea and likely to get you on a lot of ignore lists and send to a lot of time-outs

I grew up in a bad neighborhood that's for sure. if it wasn't for the computer I would be dead

Don't force yourself into a conversation, create the topic of conversation instead.

It looks like we've got ourselves a gangster rapper

9:01 PM
@MickLH i don't know if the draw function is easier to read now: jsfiddle.net/m4t2op6s but i added comments, renamed some variables

the only thing that has every worked for me in my childhood.

I don't believe in comments.

the comments imply what im trying to do which i have not been able to do :p

I don't think the compiler is gonna pick up on that :/

yes

9:02 PM
@ShenRuki well stop doing it, it's not gonna work in situations with actual adults

lol sorry ok, ok, so @WDUK I think you should abandon setTransform for now

aye aye

so go back to calculating the position ?

Right, get a very clear understanding of exactly what you want to calculate
Once you have a firm grip on your spatial manipulations, then you can go back and nice up the implementation
Also, what you're calling "angle" of the camera is actually "scale". They are highly related, almost identical in your axis aligned case, but not exactly the same.
You can use trigonometry to exactly convert between them

@KevinvanderVelden they aren't united chemistry an physics. two fields

9:09 PM
chemistry is applied physics

Pretty much

@MickLH yeah i didn't want to use scale as the name to avoid confusion with scale applied for zoom

there is a unification where it is chemistry that manipulates human bodies

@WDUK That's good wanting to avoid confusing, but slightly misguided

Physics methods can predict (pretty much) everything chemistry can predict, chemistry is basically working on a smaller scale and taking an average of the physics happening to calculate things at a much faster rate

9:10 PM
@ShenRuki you mean gene therapy?

relevant xkcd

Biology in general?

@WDUK nope

@MickLH there always is

the bond between chemistry and physics keeps the body from falling through the floor.

9:12 PM
sociology is still a real field ? :O

@KevinvanderVelden It must be included under Rule #34

Jon
if the line continued to the right, at a further distance away, would be christians

@MickLH that's what the alt-text is for, true

After christians is eunuchs

@WDUK humans are still a real thing in large enough groups that a study of those groups is potentially useful
I'll also never contradict people who say their religion/alternate medicine/spiritual believes/invisible pink unicorn is outside of science. After all, science is the study of things that actually exist

9:14 PM
damn humans, you'd think there would be a spray for that by now

There are several actually, like sarin gas and such

@KevinvanderVelden they need to answer why large groups of people still have so much faith in politicians

@WDUK because large groups of people are dumb

@KevinvanderVelden I see that as a backup plan, it has the same problem as antibiotics: It rather indiscriminately reduces the population of the useful agents along with the pathogens

@Lokkij Looks pretty cool.

9:19 PM
@MickLH nano bots might be a solution

@MickLH hmm true enough. I guess we'll just have to figure out brain uploading and put the useful ones in robot suits/matrix style emulations

I guess but I'm not sure that technology is quite "there" yet, although in the same vein of thought maybe a retrovirus could be made selective through genetic engineering

Jon
some fucked up shit going on in my code, and i'm getting ready to kill someone

if you built a bio computer with same structure as a brain and it worked in the exact same way as a human brain. would it be self aware - after all it is 100% the same in structure and mechanical behavior.

Oh! That's it @Jon you're a genius

9:21 PM
Murder is always a solution :P

Jon
oh

@WDUK you mean if you build a human brain would it be self aware? As self aware as any human I suppose

yes would it always lead to self awareness .
is it a certainty
its always something i have been wondering

(None of the qualifiers you stated don't apply to human brains as is =p)
@WDUK it's not even always a certainty for the humans we have now

@Jon Yeah you just make an IDE that detects the debugger crashing 10 times in a row, and suggests that the user perhaps exterminate low quality individuals to unwind

9:22 PM
lol ! good point @KevinvanderVelden

I.e. brain-deadness, etc

Jon
i figured it out.

kim kardashian
etc

We don't even know for sure where "we" are. The bacterial flora in your guts can affect your personality. :P

Jon
just took me to come in here and swear
thanks guys

9:22 PM
We're not just a brain in a vessel :P

Any time!

You're welcome @Jon.
I'll just send the invoice to Linda?

Yeah i read some where the gut might have it's own small brain system

aka Lindalicius

lol I'm so gonna call her that next time I see her
and ask "Where's my money?"

9:24 PM
@WDUK Indeed. It's not always as simple. I really want to get into AI when I'm done with my bachelor. These subjects really interest me. :)

Arpa is the organization that can incarcerate criminals behind state lines

You're doing it again @ShenRuki

Someone asked me to tell them what arpa was

@WilliamMariager What are you studying currently? (I am in my first year AI)

I feel like all this background story stuff is more fitting for ...

9:25 PM
@ShenRuki 15 minutes ago

Jon

@Lokkij Software Engineer.

We have since moved on in the conversation so you're posting contextless things again

Ah nice William

9:27 PM
@Lokkij Yeah, I did consider going with EE, since that's a field that's getting less attention than SE. I figured both would be very applicable to AI. But I went with SE since I had loads more experience with that. Might as well make it a bit easier.

I don't know much about EE but SE is definitely pretty related to AI, yeah

EE is so fuggin gangstah doe, like ZZT-ZZT-BZZ-ZAP!! MUDA-FEKA!GET BACK!, what I mean is, I enjoy it as a hobby
And before you call me a spaz, feel guilty and mean because this is genuinely how I am.

Though a lot of people seem to think AI is mostly psychology and barely any math or something; more than 50% will fail the first year, mainly due to underestimating the amount of math and programming.

First ever flower grown in space makes its debut! #SpaceFlower #zinnia #YearInSpace https://t.co/2uGYvwtLKr
Damn it didn't have the image

EXTRATERRESTRIAL ALIEN LIFEFORM

9:31 PM
IT'LL KILL US ALL

Who, me? Nah, not all of you. Only the person who flagged that as offensive.

The flower?

Don't think so, I could see something was flagged
Not what though, too slow

Not the flower, something further up that wasn't offensive.

oh it was the koala
I would've approved the flag

9:33 PM
Wait, is that implying that the flower was offensive?

Heh. No.

@IcyDefiance Accursed dropbears!
@ArtOfCode well technically

@Lokkij I actually thought the same. What kind of math is involved? I'm not sure how much we'll cover. So far it's been Linear Algebra and Discreet math. But I'm only on my first year.

@WilliamMariager For AI or SE?

9:35 PM
Well so far in my experimentation the hardest problem I've run into is the eigenvalue/eigenvector decomposition of arbitrarily large matrices

@WilliamMariager We're almost done with Calculus for AI, which is basically all working towards differential equations (general first-order, linear second-order) and in three months the course Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus will start

@KevinvanderVelden well technically, I don't know how I was going to finish this comeback

@MickLH Hmm, we've covered some of that in LIAL.

@ArtOfCode I mean, I did post a picture of someones genitalia

I believe open gl is the worst vice
there are a lot of vices along that line
conquest of your goals

9:37 PM
Are you addicted to GPU accelerated rasterizaton and need a 12 step program called OpenGL Anonymous?

@ShenRuki if you say something like that you're gonna have to come with reasons or you'll just be posting random nonsense again

its terminal superiority I'm going for
it's not random

@Lokkij Interesting. Where are you attending?

I just don't know you yet

I've been looking at the University of Edinburgh.

9:38 PM
"terminal superiority" You want to be better at being dead?

@WilliamMariager Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, which is, as you might have inferred, the university in Groningen, The Netherlands

you don't understand

@ShenRuki Are you sure?

@Lokkij Ah.

@ShenRuki Well you're not expressing yourself very well

9:39 PM
im nising

We have a machine learning masters at my current university, but it's more applied. I'd like to get into AI more in depth.

What if he understands very clearly, and is making a sarcastic comment about how the phrase you've said is obscure and not really a generally known colloquial metaphor?

proper way of going about hazing %
@KevinvanderVelden you're in conversation

@Lokkij please share any and all ramblings about ai, especially non-standard neural network topologies

@MickLH Haha neural networks is next year, so you'll have to wait a while for that ;)

9:42 PM
I never thought to bring it up because it doesn't connect to gamedev directly, but that's one of my top 3 areas I love to experiment in

@ShenRuki ... what conversation are you taling about? And how is that relevant?

the scrutiny of my statements others don't receive them no conversation reference required

@Shen I can't say the thread of your thoughts is obvious to me. Or anyone else, presumably, unless they're psychic.

just means Im new

@MickLH i have it working :D

9:45 PM
there is a place of heretic people can see because they approach with dimming light.

@ShenRuki No. No one else here is doing what you are doing

^

I did have to specify here, someone on the bridge did the same thing till the mods got a 0 tolerance policy for him, after a few months of repeated timeouts he didn't come back

im beneficial to youR'e mind. the people I know that do yours get beat up in the corporate world.
Iam a wealthy family

ooh I understand now

9:47 PM
Ooh please @JoshPetrie read the mod flags

@ShenRuki and how are we suppose to respond to such a random message

I'm just gonna put him on my ignore list now

@ShenRuki is a mix of /r/iamverysmart material and just not knowing english very well

you say random from lack of intelligence

That's actually better for my mind
@IcyDefiance I think he's more /r/subredditsimulator

9:48 PM
lol maybe both

@ShenRuki so you want to go down the route of insulting people's intelligence ?

Yay!!! I'm ready

if a conversation bot was trained on posts in /r/iamverysmart, then we'd get Shen

sounds like a chick that would pull my social card
it's his cube

Well, obviously, I'm winning still. You can have another turn.

9:50 PM
seems like his account posts randomly else where too :chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/20803/chat
maybe thats his first test message for his bot ;)

Listen: so you want to go down the route of insulting people's intelligence ?

all you do

Quote me where i insulted your intelligence.

a world without random is no quantum mechanics

...sheesh, I tried to make it easy for you. You were supposed to point out that I took a turn by implying that your first play was so feeble that it did not change the initial neutral state of the game.
You could have called me directly wrong but missed it, I think that's game over. no?
@WDUK The comic on that room made me literally lol

9:53 PM
lol !

'save and exit' is literally the only vim command I know

took me a second to remember what save and exit was just because it's muscle memory for me
and I don't even use vim that much

user4704
@KevinvanderVelden What mod flags?

@JoshPetrie Uuh I have no idea how you see them, "flag for moderator" in chat

user4704
I can't see them.

user4704
9:55 PM
Once they are handled, they are gone forever. There's no history.

reliance on the threat of a quote is an assualt

@JoshPetrie I dismissed it about 10 minutes ago

user4704
Okay.

I thought that was site-only? Weird

there's no history for a mod's decision that seems.. bit strange for when decisions are wrong?

9:57 PM
@KevinvanderVelden If it's a chat flag, it's any mod on the network :)

user4704
@WDUK No, there's no history for flags themselves.

ahh

@ArtOfCode I thought the not-offensive chat flag was for site only? I could've sworn I read that but it's not there

user4704
(in chat)

9:57 PM
corporations aren't formed with programs.

@KevinvanderVelden Any flag in chat is network-wide.

Yup
So you've said =p

@ShenRuki You have encountered an architectural photographer from maetrearch outside the oil facility she's worried. What should you do to reach level 2?

you are endanger of hellfire

flagged Directly personal.

9:59 PM
Hellfire sounds unpleasant

I love hellfire.

I wasn't allowed to make that game. people called it a heavenly treasure

the police stopped you ?

@ShenRuki As they say, "fuck the police"

@ShenRuki I've got to say it: why are you babbling on with random sentences that have no relation to... anything?

10:00 PM
CORPORATION

Um.

@MickLH Make sure it's consensual though

That... makes sense?

@ArtOfCode hes been doing it since he got here. lol

lol one time...

10:00 PM
unclear if it's a bot or not yet

@WDUK I noticed...

I found out she was a cop after

@ShenRuki Maetrearch vs Relic who wins?

@ArtOfCode hence me flagging it for moderator attention =p

Im skynet bot is application
there are three agents of reckoning.

user4704
10:01 PM
@ShenRuki Once again, please make an effort for make some sense and speak coherently.

@ShenRuki You've gotta stop babbling, it's annoying people.

user4704
This is your last warning.

^ those 2 are the game dev police

user4704
@StephaneHockenhull If you are here about that question you answered, I deleted it.

user4704
Sorry.

10:01 PM
Actually there is something scary about finding out that she's a cop after, even if you've done absolutely nothing wrong, it has kindof a "Take a seat" feelys to it.

maetrearch relic and advent horizon. it's advent horizon

@ShenRuki What were you literally just told?

Josh: oh, its fine. took ~5mins to do :P

@WDUK not even game dev :)

I originally was gonna vote to close it for being OT (graphics-oriented) but took pity on the guy.

user4704
10:02 PM
The OP is a serial help vampire / suspension evader, so I generally delete his questions and accounts as soon as I can confirm who they are.

ah, explains it
aaaand pity gone :)

user4704
And now I am off to do something productive for a while. Everybody behave while I'm gone. :D

stars throwing wild parties

@Lokkij I've been obsessively working on something, I'm not sure if the area of neural networks is even considered useful in formal literature, but it's basically somewhere in between an echo state network and an autoencoder

Jon
obsessively?
show me.

10:06 PM
program is still counting lines of code...

Jon
i do that manually

@JoshPetrie I guessed there was something odd like that as he kept reposting his question. Thanks for the FYI.

Ok hold on let me get an extra life so I can do that
Sadly most of my archives are on magnetic drives still

@MickLH Just to be clear: I have very little knowledge of actual AI currently. The first year of the programme is all about establishing the basics (so: programming, math, psychology, linguistics and more) so I currently have basically no knowledge about neural networks.

Jon
i design applications that eliminate jobs, then have the person who's job I eliminated continue to do this duties
using my app...

10:08 PM
Neural networks have always interested me, and I've always wanted to play around with them, but I know almost nothing about them so that's a non-starter.

it all starts with a book

Jon
man, neural networks are cool

Total Physical Source Lines of Code (SLOC) = 998,255

Jon
book?
lol
it starts with a desire to learn

to understand something u start with a book

10:09 PM
I'd estimate that 1/6th of them should be counted

Jon
lol
ok. so i stopped buying books 12 years ago

So lets guess 150,000 lines of experimenting

you get your info from internet?
i still like a physical book personally xD

Jon
internet, but mainly, i learn from experience

Satisfied @Jon? Or do I have to scan all my archives instead of just the first one I aimed it at?

Jon
10:10 PM
no, i wanna see
screenshots of your hard work

lol hold on let me get one of my favorites

Jon
boring.

You should give me a tiny game or something, and I can implement Q-learning

Jon
mario bros

I was procrastinating ripping apart an emulator for that lol
I was hoping for something easier
Like, a game with // AI code goes here set up ready to go

10:14 PM
Isn't there something like that for Starcraft: Broodwar?

Also, I haven't implemented linear-invariant convolution input mode

I couldn't be bothered to count SLOC, but counting bytes I've got 2GB of code sitting on my current disk.

So it can't "see", well it can but if you train to "see" things then it will need to learn separately for seeing things in the center of view, vs seeing them offset to a side

Which, assuming UTF-8, 50-character average lines and mostly ASCII characters, is 40 million SLOC.
Which is probably an overestimate :)

Lots of binaries I assume? :P

10:18 PM
@WilliamMariager No, that was counting source files.

Ah
No clue how I'd go about counting that in an easy way. :P

The main thing I've been working on is the self organizing aspect, so if you want to exploit where my specific experiments shine, you would need a problem which sometimes has a whole new dimension of data show up, or entirely new encodings that show up while maintaining a similar overall problem structure

Assuming 70-character lines and a slightly lower percentage of ASCII characters, it's 25M lines. Which is slightly more realistic.

Jon
i need to fix picross touch

Lots of /bin and /obj folders in my code folder.

10:19 PM
I threw a python script together to total filesizes with certain extensions.

Jon
I don't know if I should do it... but I was considering writing another series, on how to use that map data generator, and create gameobjects in unity with them

@ArtOfCode you should develop that into an approximator that eventually converges testing the actual average line size in bytes of more and more files randomly

Jon
and how to display the world, pool the game objects, cull them, etc..

Do you have to do culling manually in Unity?

Jon
depends on the culling type
i mean.. having gameobjects that are far away, return to the object pool

10:21 PM
@MickLH I should. That would give me something to do tomorrow.

Jon
but yeah, you don't have to cull the drawing
you do have to cull the updates, and whatnot though

Ok had to be sure, I usually hear that called LOD

Jon
LOD is siomething else

Hate hen you have decent car speakers but they get loose and rattle from the bass in the dub techno you play

Jon
when you move far away from a detailed model of a city for example.. you can replace the mesh with a low res version
no reason to keep the high details anymore, if you are not rendering them more than a few pixels

10:23 PM
@Almo That's why ghetto beats are genius. You effectively get more system for free

@Almo duct tape

No need to render 100k polys if it's in one pixel

Jon
that is the general idea

I have to bbiab
Have fun guys, be safe
Or not, idgaf
But don't die... Unless you really really want to I guess... I mean if you're that down on your mood then the last thing you need is me calling you selfish

Jon
you can also do LOD in 2d
this was a zoomed out low level of detail of my maps .. so I could zoom out in real time

10:25 PM
Game dev monster

Jon
when you zoom back in, the textures would come back into play
i do like game dev :)
@Almo i have some touch code lying around... i need to plug in
wondering if it will fix it
I think I could limit the raycasting a bit too... but
Anyways.. I have my son, and he has been using my picross touch box for gaming

@Jon That looks cool. So basically you have a plain color texture when zooming out?
And a proper texture when closer?

Jon
its actually a rendertexture
the entire thing
so its 1 draw call
then when you get closer, that render texture is removed, and the actual world with textures is drawn again

Jon
cheap trick :)

10:38 PM
lol

std::vector<std::reference_wrapper<const model<tanvert>>> todraw_;
lol and Java is supposed to be the verbose language

user4704
At least you can typedef and alias template that stuff away.

user4704
10:54 PM
Huh, apparently I am credited on Halo 5.

@JoshPetrie That's new. What did you do?

user4704
@ArtOfCode I worked on the infrastructure team there, but I quit before the game shipped and I didn't think they'd credit me. I looked when it shipped and I wasn't listed in the programming section, but my old roommate just texted me to say we are both in the "special thanks" section.

@JoshPetrie Huh, not bad

Hmm, I can't come up with a good way to handle my units and their AI. I feel like I'm making a huge mess just making it kinda work.
I should see if I can find some good approaches to AI.

user4704
Ugh, this guy again?
