Q: Barking up a tree

Ed PlunkettI don't understand expression "barking up a wrong tree". Does it think about putting bark on or taking it off? Person says "you're barking up the wrong tree" and he means "don't bother me". But what is it from? Does he mean the bark is wrong kind for the tree? Like "I am oak, take your pine bark!...

^Is asking about the origin of an idiom also considered ?

The Lirish are very proud of their sense of humour.
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. correct it where necessary.
Who are the Lirish?
Wash the red and blue separately.
Correct it as well.
Sorry it is Lrish.
@Magsi ?
Explain them with reasons.
You mean Irish?
18:46
Yes
Well, the second one is iffy.
You can take "Irish" in the first one as a modifier that has replaced its head.
Not in the second one, I think.
Please explain them grammatically, so that I may also make someone understand easily.
@Magsi Well, you know what a modifier is, right?
No
What are adjectives?
18:48
Yeah, I know about them.
Do you agree that "Irish" and "blue" are used as adjectives in those sentences?
Share your views.
I will catch them simply.
But I have not used lrish in the second sentence.
Nationalities tend to replace their heads for a more poetic effect (when they're used as adjectives).
Other adjectives, not so much.
You usually delete or IOW ellipse something when it's obvious.
I am not understanding you.
About nationalities, it's usually "people".
18:51
Not getting.
Which part?
I mean , you explain my sentences grammatically so that I may share it on the group of Facebook,
I did.
In detail.
OK, let's start again.
18:53
But I couldn't get it.
The first sentence is grammatical, the second is not IMO.
Do you know what I meant by "head" @Magsi?
Hullo @M.Ibrahim! Welcome to the Cabin!
No, I couldn't get it.
What actually "head"is?
@Magsi The head of a phrase is the "main" part of it, simply put.
Do you know what a phrase is?
Hmmm, I know but I am confused.
Can I call Sir @DamkerngT.?
@Magsi Of course.
You looked for a grammatical explanation, and I gave the most straightforward I could.
19:06
Hmmm,thanks.
I think you're confused because you don't have a clear idea what a phrase is and what head (of a phrase) means.
So @Magsi I recommend some reading about them.
Hmmm , you are dead right!
@Nihilist_Frost which bark is "Helen, thy beauty is to me. Like those Nicean barks of yore"? does mean shes wrong tree, is not beautiful? — Ed Plunkett 53 mins ago

Actually, I was thinking that it's off-topic.
Now I think it's not easy to help the OP understand the idiom.
@Nihilist_Frost O_O
19:12
The OP fails to comprehend words that have different origins can converge to the same word.
Is the OP playing with us?
It sounds more like it.
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. That crossed my mind too.
Yeah, he's running tangents for the sake of being intrigued.
@Nih actually my meta guy background told me we're dealing with a troll.
How can that be more than they can chew!
19:16
OP claims to be a Croat or something.

Hello M.A.R
hello everybody :)
what are talking about ?
Nothing, right now.
what is this room for ?
@M.Ibrahim This is the main room for English Language Learners.
We learn about language.
19:50
great, I'm not perfect in English .
thank you for inviting me to this chat
I want to know what is the difference between "had been" and "have been"
@M.Ibrahim One is past perfect, the other is present perfect.
I recommend you Google the two terms and read more about them.
That'd be more useful than a boring guy like me explaining it to ya.
No actually I searched for them before but I always forget them because I don't use them
a very bad sentence (Them) :D
@M.Ibrahim No, actually it's good.
You're worrying too much about repetition.
@M.Ibrahim Then use them!
Every sentence is a chance to improve your English.
You are right .
Where are you from ?
Iran.
19:58
good :)
I'm from Egypt .
Do you have a job ?
or still student .
I'm only 16.

I guessed you're older
That's always the case.
you talk as a mature man
and don't say that you are a girl
:)
I'm a molecule.
20:09
are u polarized ?
Nope. Pagodane may be exotic, but it's just a hydrocarbon.
so, you have a greasy character ?

Q: Growing Pains -- Lost cause?

Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ.I think I'll die sooner than persuading people about the fact that we have a really, really bad tagging system right now. Out of the sea of users, only a handful of them seem to care about the tags. No mods have chipped in active retagging. I'm not looking for an unconstructive argument about my ...

Q: A user who keeps posting off-topic questions

RathonyDo we need this user in this community who keeps asking a question without any reference/research/link that could be relevant to his/her questions and shows some efforts and energy he/she made and spent to ask a question? 4 of his last 5 questions were closed. If I dig up more, I am sure I will b...

meta.ell.stackexchange.com/questions/2843/… -- I wonder if they deleted it because I didn't allow them to point at people.
@M.Ibrahim Yeah.
@StackExchange Well, understand me. I'm desperate.
20:26
I don't have problem with tagging
What problem do you see ?
MAR is going to shoot himself. :-)
It's about usefulness of the site.
What exactly is the problem ?
I think we may need to ask ourselves first: why is Stack Exchange useful?
What is SE? How does it work? What's it good for? Do people care about it?
Because it provides the contact between experts and experience seekers
Contact? I don't think so.
20:35
So,what do you think ?
That sounds more like how other sites, like Experts-Exchange.com, work.
But not SE.
SE is modeled after SO, AFAIK.

A: How can I talk to the people of main site?

J.R.The Stack Exchange is not set up where users can contact other individual users directly. As others have said in their comments, the best way to contact an individual user would be a chat room, but not all users frequent the chat rooms, and they are under no obligation to do so. While it's nice ...

of course SE have the advantages of instructing members to ask properly
Because it (SE) seeks good questions and good answers.
It always my intention when asking question to be a reference for the community
That's very good!
20:51
Ironically Rathony himself was suspended for some time
for being very rude
This is just plain bullying.
