@Wildcard I also think If questioner just tried to know about rsync from tag, then he could got answer!

@ekaj I also noticed that he is favourite-ing all of his question!

This is wildly off topic, but I have an old laptop which runs Win XP, from 2007. Is this unsafe to use these days? From a quick survey, it looks like it is. I'm debating whether I want Windows on my laptop at all, but if so, what's the least awful choice?

@FaheemMitha There's probably plenty of malware that it isn't protected against. But it depends what you do. I wouldn't use Internet Explorer there, or use it on a network that I don't control, but Chrome or Firefox always used behind a NAT (or a proper firewall) should be fine.
I'd recommend running it in a VM though, unless the goal is to play games.
Lots of bigcorps are still running XP, but there aren't any more security updates.

@Gilles Yes, that's what I read.
Would a more recent version of Windows be better? And if so, which one?
I don't find the idea appealing, but occasionally one needs to run Windows software. Though the only thing I recall running is tax software.
@Gilles On a VM on the laptop, for example?
Would that make any difference from an infection standpoint?
Actually, as of right now, GRUB doesn't have a Win entry at all. So I can't even boot into it.
On my laptop, I mean.

Q: What is the difference between micro-kernel and monolithic-kernel?

PandyaI heard that Unix/Linux is a monolithic-kernel whereas Hurd is micro-kernel. So, I want to know what is the difference between these kernel type?

@Pandya haven't we had it before?
I think I've already answered it, but it might have been on a different site

@Gilles I can't find in our community
@Gilles yes, some commented for another community : unix.stackexchange.com/questions/252836/…
Also started answering from them. But I want a Canonical one for our community.

Q: How does Linux kernel compare to microkernel architectures?

TshepangI read once that one advantage of a microkernel architecture is that you can stop/start essential services like networking and filesystems, without needing to restart the whole system. But considering that Linux kernel nowadays (was it always the case?) offers the option to use modules to achieve...

if all you want to know is “what's a microkernel”, there's Wikipedia for that

@Gilles Good! But I think that question focus on advantage of micro-kernel over monolithic by comparing it.

@Pandya as opposed to your question, which… compares microkernels and monolithic kernels

@Gilles It may be duplicate. However now, visitors can easily reach to that by searching

Hurd = Hird of Unix-Replacing Daemons.

@user from where you are trying to copy files?
If you are sure, you can use sudo
Actually no risk to source, but destination is important because overwriting withsudo may harmful but it depends upon destination
@user If you are first time to chat-room, visit chat.stackexchange.com/faq

@Pandya I am backing up my home to /run/media/user/encrypteddrive
thanks for all the help

@user as, I said if you're sure about overwriting at destination, you can use sudo

ok great
@Pandya would "sudo rsync -av --delete --info=progress2 ~/ /run/media/user/encrypteddrive" be the correct command?

yes

thanks

Is it possible to use jack to convert a audio out and mic in as line in?

@Wally Worry less about being downvoted. And if it happens, I'm sure you'll survive it. Many of us have been downvoted, and we're still here.

Q: How to run Unix?

Henry WH HackI always wanted to try Unix but I can't seem to find an ISO file or somewhere to buy it. Is Unix published for the whole wide world to use or is it a special OS only for high-class servers, mainframes and supercomputers? Can I try it out? Does it comes in distros? This is like the problem I had ...

I hope this gets a few more upvotes (or fewer downvotes), if it reaches +3 by tomorrow I'm getting an extra hat
I haven't really had time to care about hats this year… I'm missing several that I surely could have gotten if I'd timed things right
What topic could I write about by tonight, that could get to +3/+3 by tomorrow?

5:51 PM
@Gilles Systemd?

@FaheemMitha I'd have to learn about it first

@Gilles I suspect a leg-pull.
@Gilles Well, you have a few hours...

@Gilles What are those hats for? They will disappear soon anyhow, so why do you care?
