@BESW Oh my gosh. I need to stock up for this remedy.
That sounds like it'd be so good for when I get sick.
... which is likely very soon given I was in another city all last week and at a convention for 3 days.

Replace the vodka with ginger and it's basically my home remedy.

@BESW That sounds lovely too.

Hot tea with lemon, honey, and ginger. Mmm.

@doppelgreener PAX? How was it?

@doppelgreener Well, so long as you're available this weekend.

3:01 AM
@Adeptus Pretty great, as is a dependable quality. It was missing some things that I enjoyed a lot last year and was hoping for more of this year, but still good. Next time I'll head over as an enforcer. (Whenever next time is, given I'll be in Europe before the next PAX Aus and Europe doesn't have a PAX.)
@BESW I'll be available. Hopefully I won't also be ill!

I'll want to work with you to settle down on a PC ahead of time so we can get playing faster on the day.

@doppelgreener A friend of mine went - he's a minecraft modder & (various games) livestreamer, among other things. He's actually got enough subscribers that he can make a living at it.

@BESW Sounds good. I'll be free tonight.
@Adeptus Is there more I should say, like about what I did there, what is there, what I go for, etc?
Or are you already across all the biz and just checking how I found it? :)

Share if you want to :) I know in general what's there, but haven't delved into specifics
(going for lunch now, so will be afk a bit)

3:37 AM
@BESW would you say that fantasy is generally about people-problems, or are there worldbuilding-problem fantasy arcs I should be looking at? (and cross-chatroom replies are not a thing :/ )

Fantasy is more commonly used for people stories, but not exclusively.
It's harder to write worldbuilding problems in a fantasy setting because of the "made-up rules" problem.

@BESW yeah, I suppose it explains why I have an easier time with RP in say EVE Online

And the best stories are a blend of them.
The Seventh Bride, for example, is at its heart a people-problems story. But a major challenge is that because of her people-problems, the heroine doesn't think to ask important worldbuilding "how things work" questions until it's too late.

@BESW ...heheh. one of those people.

Not really.

3:42 AM
[confused about what kind of people is being referred to]

She's under a lot of stress, in a brand-new situation, and it doesn't occur to her that a) there are totally different rules here, and b) she won't be able to ask about them later.

aaah.
I was more thinking "someone not predisposed to try to figure out how systems work to begin with"
@BESW one of the funnier "worlds collide" mashups that goes on in my head is some of the Dilbert comics have left me wanting to toss a couple of my D&D chars into CubeCo :P

So a lot of the book is about figuring out what the rules are when getting it wrong could be lethal--and asking is definitely lethal.

@BESW yeah -- basically, the poor bloke who didn't know to ask about the rules until the point where asking will take too long

Or, in this case, where the evil Lord of the Manor has come home and is Listening To Everything In The House.
Suddenly the cook who wants to tell you everything while the Lord was away... can't under pain of death. But you didn't know that he'd be able to Listen To Everything until he already was.

3:49 AM
I have played an intrigue game like this.
(Spyfall: there are 30-ish locations. all players know the location they're in, except for the spy, who does not. the players take turns asking each other questions, not knowing who's who. the people in the know have to figure out who the spy is, the spy has to figure out what location they're in.)

The heroine just sort of assumes that certain things are true, like "Roads work equally well going both directions," and "If you stab someone in the neck he'll probably die," and "The friendly person who answers my questions will continue to do so."

@BESW I was thinking about a much simpler case -- you don't want to be asking "what the heck does that signal mean anyway?" when you're zipping by it at 70MPH with 10,000tons behind you!
@BESW but yeah -- there's definitely story fodder in that theme

A: How can I quickly cool a water bottle?

OriginGet some dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) or liquid nitrogen if you're cool. Dunk your water bottle into one of those for about 30 seconds for dry ice, 5 for liquid nitrogen. This will cool your bottle super-fast and even turn some of the water into ice. To increase the rate of heat transfer away f...

(i am oneboxing a onebox of a onebox)

@doppelgreener Oneboxing a onebox of a onebox of a onebox got flagged in another room last week.

Q: In chat, a oneboxed question/answer link that is, itself, oneboxed, goofs out with a bad link

doppelgreenerWith apologies for the confusing title, but I had fun writing it. The matter itself is a little confusing. Let's take this chat message. Someone posted a link to an answer in the Tavern, and that link got oneboxed: This works fine. There's nothing wrong here. Then that chat message was, ...

@BESW Nice. This time it was legitimate bug testing though.

Yeah.
Somebody was recursing their own onebox.

@BESW That's dangerous! This one time I saw someone fall into one of those from the sheer gravitational force it was amassing. We had a hard time getting them back out.
Such messages must definitely be flagged for the citizen's own good, and also for spamminess and such.

Do y'all remember that 'Shub' magic ping?
one cheeky user has made it their name.

7:51 AM
@doppelgreener actually, AFAIK an attempt to ping him was how the bug was discovered in the first place

oh
that is odd
I would think that wouldn't be allowed

Maybe it's fixed now... but I'm not finding out. :P

the bug is fixed
about unicode in user names...

Q: Zalgo in user names and effects on comments rendering

SPArchaeologistAfter viewing this user name (which contains a lot of Unicode) I had the idea to test if usernames allow ZALGO. To my dismay they do. Is this wanted? Together with ShadowWizard we did a quick test. ZALGO has the ability to "break" comments. Shouldn't that be avoided before someone start a...

Good.

8:10 AM
nice to hear

Anyway, here is the post about the solution
(follow the link for the actual image)

8:35 AM
(... Nice, Marigold was on a FiM comic cover.)

9:05 AM
@Pixie - last week episode. Flutterbat cameo and Sailor Moon too.
(actually, somehow Ranma, Bulma, Utena and Rei managed to appear somehow too)

9:22 AM
@Derpy I like this story.

@doppelgreener SQL collation defaults + not-Latin characters = Hell on Earth

@Derpy I need to learn about this first thing

9:38 AM
@doppelgreener Basically, it is just sorting order rules. In this special case, it would seem it also add some strange implicit conversion that manages to make that comparison always true
I actually asked Balpha what collation they where using, I want to do some test and so want a friend of mine.

9:52 AM
@Derpy Nice. xD
Speaking of Sailor Moon and crossovers, Sailor Moon Pokemon teams.

@Pixie First Usagi/Sailor Moon appearance in the show. In the comics she already slipped in multiple times, along with the others.

I've seen the comic cameos.

Luffy, Zoro and Sanji had a cameo too, we now await Naruto...
It is so good when a cash grab a game comes out and the plot is so well written.
Really, Ellegaard ... you have to "invent the command block"?
What about the one used for the Wither Storm?
....

10:11 AM
wait
so that is a thing?
does she actually like,.. have Pokemon?

@trogdor It's fanart.

ah ok
lol

I think the Pokemon are official but the senshi are just really well-done in the trainer art style.

I did think that at first and then you both mentioned cameo appearances
as in the Pokemon are an official team?
or just that they actually exist and look like that?

@trogdor Sorry, I phrased that confusingly. The Pokemon are official art that the artist arranged around their fanart.

10:17 AM
I could believe either honestly, Trainers in the games and anime that I have seen are incredibly inflexible and impractical that way
@Pixie ah I see

The senshi themselves are possibly edits, let's see...

I would guess they are

Yep.

I don't think I even know who most of these characters are
I mean, 3 of them are main characters, that I know of
then again that is all I would know about XD
all of them could be pretty iconic for someone who actually watched Sailor Moon
I think that guy on the far left is probably Tuxedo Mask's Anticlimactic Fight Scene TM buddy actually XD
that was a hilarious clip

10:44 AM
Jadeite is his name I guess? I don't even know why I care about this but I had to hunt that clip down and figure out his name XD
the clip at least was worth more laughs

Jadeite, yes. xD

poor Tuxedo Mask, has no stamina

I feel sorrier for Jadeite. He's just so... ineffectual and forgettable. The other villains in his group have cooler schticks, and his character design doesn't even stand out. xD

well, and from what little I understand, that really really lame fight was like, his crowning achievement? or am I just making huge suppositions there?

It wasn't his crowning achievement, but spoiler.

10:51 AM
mk

He tried to run the senshi over with airplanes. It didn't work.

sounds like he needed a better plan,.....e
wink wink

Niiiiice.

XD

10:54 AM
I can only make dad jokes, and I have no kids or anything XD
@Pixie he does have the least hair
and he is off to the side

Nephrite (with the black crystal) gets a huge plot arc, Zoisite (the other blonde) has more personality, not to mention orbiting rose petals, and has a low-key romance with Kunzite (the white-haired one)...

oh
Zoisite looks more like he/she has half brown half red hair

So Jadeite is just like "the other blond one, he was kind of a jerk."
Zoi's more of a strawberry blonde, yeah. Male but gender changed in the original dub.

of course
plus I mean
no one can expect me to know the gender of a Sailor Moon Villain just from a picture XD
or at least not all of them

That is a pretty fair observation. xD

11:08 AM
it seems like they have villains of both genders, but most of the male ones are pretty effeminate,... for whatever reason

@trogdor First Rule of Saint Seiya

That's what generally appeals to the audience reading them.

I suppose that does make sense
I was not even thinking about marketing and such
I often forget that is a thing

@Pixie I for one would have laugh until Ragnarok if Tuxedo Mask was drawn with Kenshiro art style....

why would Ragnarok stop you?

11:12 AM
Because then I would have something funnier to do. Play with Loki and the other gods :P

Loki is pretty hilarious

@Derpy That would be hilarious.

ugh..... why I had to do a google image search (disclaimer: hosted on newsground)?

eh?

@Derpy Hokuto no Moon!

11:20 AM
@trogdor Pixie must have followed the link, you are still safe. Do not click :P

ok then?

@Pixie I am really tempted to send you a youtube link to a clip from MLP episode 100... it is a bit spoiler, but nothing too serious.

@trogdor It's just Sailor Moon in the style of the main character from a manga called Hokuto no Ken.

ah

@Pixie Actually, it seem more like Ken cosplaying Sailor Moon :P
Which is even worse

11:23 AM
@Derpy That too. :P
And the reason that that artstyle is so laughable to envision in a story like Sailor Moon is that Hokuto no Ken's art is typical of male power fantasy, taken to quite an extreme. Those qualities aren't the ones that the general audience of SM are looking for at all. When you try to combine the two, it's rather mismatched.

oh
Fist of the North Star XD I have heard about that (not very much but still)

@Pixie That is the precise reason I had choose Ken in the first place.
@trogdor It had a great arcade coin-op machine back in the days. Since the whole plot revolves around a martial art that make enemy explode when you punch some precise pressure point, the arcade had you try to do that ... it featured a ring of punch bag you had to hit when they would light up.

I have heard that, I think it was the main character maybe? but someone punched a tank till it blew up

The anime was still pretty flat and violent too, but the game was a sort of strange rhythm game surrogate.

ridiculous things such as that

11:30 AM
@Pixie anyway - here is the link Pixie. If you want to have a look, this clip shouldn't be too spoilerish - here

oh this, yes
@Derpy I was so happy when I saw this XD

That reminds me of Daimon from... one of the Digimon series. He punches Digimon. He punches Digimon good. This is spoilery for Xros Wars, but if you don't mind that, it's a sight to behold the guy punching a giant line of VenomVamdemon.

and this was the arcade machine

huh
those red buttons on it look familiar

again, not really a Kenshiro fan, but it was something nice to try

11:34 AM
can't say for the rest of it though

@Derpy Niiice. xD

anyway, that shouldn't be too much of a spoiler
you don't get from it why or how he is doing a senshi transformation, just that he does it eventually XD

@trogdor funny thing is, there was a fan comic that had "Princess Big Mac" far before that episode.

yeah I know that existed
I didn't read it but I know it exists

@trogdor There is also the S4 finale with.... Brave Heart as a bg music, but that is a little too much :P

11:38 AM
@Derpy Like... Digimon Brave Heart?

@Pixie yep. That song goes with everything

Oh, you mean like an AMV or something? xD
Speaking of Digimon music, this cover of Butterfly is really good.

@Pixie they had the original s4 ending clip with Brave Heart inserted as a background music. It manages to fit in nicely.
Since it is the original episode clip, watching it is an obvious spoiler for the S4 finale.
I wouldn't suggest it if you ever plan to do you job and watch the missing episodes have some time to get up to the current season.

I think I'm too far deep into YuGiOh heck to do much else right now. :P
Though with Digimon Tri coming out soon, I need to finish rewatching at least Adventure season 1.

I finished watching all those YuGiOh abriged episodes that are out

11:52 AM
Hehe.
I'm rewatching them as I go along with the actual series.

I didn't want to do that

Understandable. xD
I've boiled down the episode format quite nicely, I think:
> Opponent: Didn’t you know that my card is super strong because of Circumstancial Rules That Have Never Come Up Before and Never Will Again?
Protagonist: OH NO, I AM SCARED AND CONFUSED BECAUSE ACTUALLY I DID NOT KNOW
Side Characters: No matter what’s actually going on in this duel, we’re going to insist that you’ll win! POWER OF FRIENDSHIP! HEART OF THE CARDS!
Protagonist: … that’s it! I play DEUS EX MACHINA! But that’s not all! I’m combining it with a spell card, COMPLETE BS RATIONALIZATION!

lol

think someone here could love this too.
this is an actual cove

Cute. xD
... pay attention to Spike's character sheet, @trogdor.

12:00 PM
@Pixie XDXDXD

@Derpy they have... Pone... I love it.

@Pixie That is one. But... what is Twily reading?

@Derpy It looks like that unicorn comic you post sometimes.

12:17 PM
@Pixie Precisely
There is also a poster on the wall just bellow Gilda
And if you look closely, the author of that web comic is also there.
Look at the pony in the background near the shop door.

11:39 PM
I took my car to the shop yesterday because the oil light was linking and the dipstick reads "empty" no matter how much oil I put in.
Just got a call that they've poured two bottles of oil in and it's still reading empty, and they're baffled and want to rip the whole thing open.
I think they're going to find a rip in space/time or something.
2

11:53 PM
That doesn't sound good, rip in space/time or no.

Nooo.

(at the very least it sounds likely they'll find a rip in space, the space meant to be occupied by a wall of the pipe to some other part of the engine)

Yeah. 'cause it's not leaking onto the ground or anything.
But I've had this "dipstick doesn't work right" thing for a very long time, and only just now started getting a blinky light, so wherever the hole is, it's not been compromising the system's pressure.

@BESW Maybe your engine has an Oil Pan of Holding?

I'm suspecting an Oil-Drinking Gremlin.
