Q: Can anyone identify this BBC movie?

MestizomadThis is quite a tough one as I believe this movie was made by the BBC, and so it would have been fairly lowish budget and not popular outside of the U.K. All that I can remember about it is various details and scenes. It's a WW2 sci-fi alien film... The scenes that I remember are a UFO fly al...

Q: Horror TV show from 80s or early 90s - man buys balding hair spray from infomercial

BluBirdie80's or early 90's, definitely not later. A man is watching an infomercial on TV for the dark hair spray that covers bald spots. He receives it in the mail and accidentally sprays some in his mouth, or he sprays it on his head and a hair gets in his mouth. It turns out the spray is little worms (...

Q: old parody about sperm

user27157Im trying to recall a movie/skit, likely back in the 90's. A parody about sperm living in a man. They were actually real men, dressed in diapers. In one part of the movie, it showed the sperm (men) drinking and partying, while one was working out, with intent to be the first to reach the egg, onl...

Seriously though, if you can't bear to watch any movie that doesn't have the most recent, most amazingly realistic effects, you're only depriving yourself of perfectly good (even great) films. And honestly, it's rather insulting to think that a movie's merit is only based on its special effects, and not, y'know... on the quality of its script, the talent of its actors, or the capability of the director. — ghostdog 3 hours ago
I agree with everything except the "capability of the director" part.

@Catija Agree also. That question kind of pissed me off a little. Really? You're too good to watch movies without CGI? Annoying.

Yeah... and I'm not sure why someone would come to a movie site and ask the users what to watch instead of an extremely iconic film series.

It almost makes me think it's almost troll-like bc it's a pretty ridiculous question.

Maybe... It seems it should be obvious that it would be poorly received.

@Catija is it morally (for lack of better word) acceptable to post a "guess" in the comment section on id questions if you have an idea, but aren't sure of the answer?

3:22 AM
@steelerfan Oh, sure. I've done that in the past... for example, the one you did recently about the sperm was good.

@Catija Great. I do that sometimes if the question isn't clear. I feel better now :)

Yeah, if there's something that's a good guess but it doesn't match in some major way.

Q: Movie about Scientist finding mysterious transmission in 1920s-1940s

Stephen R WhittakerI vaguely recall seeing a synopsis of a film where either a German or Russian scientist (?) discovers an otherworldly transmission/signal in radio experiments. Q: what movie is this clip in?

NacidDoes anyone know what movie is this in? https://vt.tumblr.com/tumblr_nvrrgyqG3t1uyt261.mp4#=

9:31 AM
@MovieReel Would this be considered off-topic.....anyone?
I know what movie this is from, but I don't want to post an answer if it is off-topic.

9:48 AM
@steelerfan Link only question, no information, not really a movie (it was more like a long Michael Jackson video)... Better off closed.

@Walt Yeah, I kinda figured. You're right, the movie is Thriller-esque meaning it's billed as a short film, but is basically a 35-40 minute music video.

@steelerfan I sometime suggest titles, but if the question is really bad, I try not to and instead ask the OP for more info. There are 2-3 ID Qs from the last couple of days that I'm deliberately not answering because I'm waiting for them to improve.

@Walt I see your point. Agreed.

And I see a couple more popped up since then. And they're not that great either.

Yeah, I made a suggestion on the "sperm" one, but that's about it.

9:58 AM
@MovieReel Forget this being a dup, what 'pug'?! :P

@Walt I was wondering the same thing :)

@steelerfan Hmm. Just saw that. It could be someone ripping off "everything you always...". But doesn't ring any bells ATM.

@Walt Yeah, pretty much everything is correct except the year. OP might think it is the 90's because of the raciness of the movie?? Not sure, will have to wait for response.

It was one of the rare highlights in that film, IIRC. I didn't really like this movie. (OK, and maybe the giant breast scene was funny, in a silly sort of way.)

The movie was pretty racy, especially for the early 70's. There was a scene with Gene Wilder and the sheep......no need to say more :)

10:06 AM
@steelerfan They're describing a different scenario, though. "The men drinking and partying, while one was working out"? I don't remember any of that in that scene.

@Walt I was just describing a different scene with Gene Wilder in it that was uhmmm...questionable. In the "sperm" scene, the control operators are drinking and partying after the sperm is released. The working out is the men down in the...ahem...control room attempting to raise their "mechanism" before the sperm jump out.

@steelerfan I know, I was still talking about the other scene.
@steelerfan True. :) Though I never really liked Wilder either, sorry... He's funny, but not 'ha ha' funny, rather 'in need of an urgent psychiatric evaluation' funny.

@Walt Oh, sorry. Gene Wilder is a Dr. and he falls in love with a sheep and ends up divorcing his wife. The sheep leaves him in the end and Gene Wilder is left penniless on the streets.
@Walt I always thought he made a great Willy Wonka.

@steelerfan Yeah, I knew that too. I think we got our wires crossed somewhere. ;)
@steelerfan Let's just say he was better than Depp.

@Walt Totally! Depp creeped me out as Wonka.

10:13 AM
@steelerfan They also didn't get the character at all. He was an old, cranky man who kinda disliked children (and most of everyone else)

@Walt True. I was burnt out on Depp, but I want to see him in the Whitey Bulger movie.

@steelerfan At least he's not impersonating singers anymore :P

@Walt Yeah, they have pretty much beat that franchise into the ground. I was over it a while ago.

@steelerfan I was never really into it. Having a convoluted, soap-like plot didn't help (They're kids movies based on a ride, folks. Make with the CGI and end after 90 minutes, please.)

@Walt Me neither. I liked Jack Sparrow in the first one, but the whole thing got old after that.

10:20 AM
Watched Starred Up yesterday, BTW. A strange, really intense film.
And stupidly thought during it, "Why is Quinn being British?" I totally forgot he's not American.

@Walt Never heard of it. I will have to look it up.

@steelerfan Fair warning: A tense, sometimes brutal prison film.
@MovieReel OK, breathe?

@Walt oh God. I can handle prison films, I just can't handle any rape scenes.

@steelerfan Well, this might be a spoiler, but there were none.

10:27 AM
@Walt I will check out then. I would rather know before hand if there are scenes like that going in. I just would skip through those scenes anyway.

@steelerfan Well, avoid Oz then at all costs.

@Walt Yeah, I have already been warned about that one. I have heard it is bad.....in that sense.

@steelerfan I always say that is was an amazing show... that I'll never watch again.
@steelerfan Rape was pretty much a character there. :O

@Walt That is how I feel about the movie "Sleepers" It was a great movie, I just couldn't handle those types of scenes in it.

@steelerfan What about Shawshank?

10:33 AM
@Walt That wasn't as bad for me....not as graphic.

There are a couple of major parents guides online, of course

@MovieReel Why the F was this upvoted?

11:53 AM
@Catija Well, I'm not even sure if it's so much on-topic in the first place. He just seems to be asking for a ressource that provides a plot summary.

12:17 PM
@steelerfan Most likely because someone just perfectly knew what movie they were asking, disregarding if the actual question is shit (and maybe a little bit because we don't want to downvote those poor little new users that much). Fixed.

@NapoleonWilson Sorry, 8 hours into my shift....I'm getting cranky :) I just thought the question was really easy to answer as well as.....well, you said it.

@steelerfan No need to excuse, if it wasn't apparent, I totally share you viewpoint and didn't interpret your message as cranky, I would have reacted exactly the same, since it is a crap question.

12:32 PM
@NapoleonWilson No worries :) What football game are you getting over there today?

Jets vs Patriots and Raiders vs Chargers. Next sunday we'll get three games again, including the Steelers one, it seems.

3:43 PM
@steelerfan You seem to be pretty sure that your phone booth question counts against the time-travel challenge. But it doesn't seem to be much about time travel in particular.

3:58 PM
@NapoleonWilson What? That's the only reason I asked that question! The question was about the vessel in which they used for time travel. That's not considered relevant? Have you been talking to Richard? ;)

@steelerfan No, I just read your messages. I just want to make sure that you take Richard's very personal opinion of where that question should have been asked with a grain of salt. He's known for having zero respect for our community and at the end of the day it is your very own decision where you ask an on-topic question. Don't let your supposedly low SE experience confuse you into interpreting too much official guidance into personal opinions of higher-rep users.
@steelerfan Besides that, it's a rather out-of-universe question about the inspiration for a stylistic choice. I'm not sure it's really about time-travel. But maybe I should open the challenge a little more, since there weren't so many genuine time-travel questions yet anyway.

4:13 PM
@NapoleonWilson Oh, I completely take his comments with a grain of salt. I think I have figured out his personality. Of course, I am always a smart ass exclaiming how I worship him. It's kind of a back and forth bantering. I was muted over there because of it just now. He has done that to me before :)

What muted? Really? Huh.

@NapoleonWilson Yeah, no biggie, I just thought it was an interesting one to ask.

@steelerfan Sure, it's a great question. I'm seriously considering to open the challenge and turn it into a "questions about movies about timetravel", since the actual time travel questions are rather few, probably just that (in itself rather questionable) huge Terminator question.

@NapoleonWilson I think so, it has happened to me over there a few times. It's all in good fun. I was muted or kicked out for not knowing "Firefly" and for claiming that I liked The Dukes of Hazard.

But changing it now might be strange, too. Hmm.
@steelerfan Hmm, if you don't take it serious then granted and good for you, but that really would border abuse of moderator/room-owner privileges.

4:18 PM
@NapoleonWilson well, don't do it on account of my question. I just thought that if you added a tag with the title of a movie/show that it counted.

@steelerfan Well, there were other interesting questions that would then become elibigle, like that great BTTF original script question, which is just behind-the-scenes and not about time travel either.

@NapoleonWilson Oh, Jesus. Pretty sure it's abuse of privilege! I know that they are just bantering. I know it's not serious, so I don't mind.

@steelerfan Well, in general, it counts if the challenge-organizer says it does. ;-) Tags help, but they're not mandatory (especially since people don't always use them consistently). I have to go through all the questions manually anyway. That's the reason why those questions don't necessarily need the (a little questionable) tag to be eligible either.
@steelerfan Well, your decision. But if that's true it might not be the best thing to do in a room that is, well, a little famous for the flags it generates lately. As long as they don't do it to users who would take it more seriously it might be fine, though.

@NapoleonWilson Gotcha. I am glad I know that:) I really don't have the energy for another one. I will wait for next topic :)

@steelerfan Well, sorry for wasting your time. ;-) But it's a really great question nevertheless. (And at the end of the day, winning a challenge doesn't really bring anything either, let alone does anyone care about those challenges anyway. ;-()

4:24 PM
@NapoleonWilson Please. I was working the overnight shift in ICU. I had oodles of time!

@steelerfan Hmm, as long as your patients agree with your priorities. ;-P

@NapoleonWilson That's why there's so much time in ICU overnight, they are almost always asleep and we can only have up to 5 on the ward at a time. I have lots of time on those shifts :)
@NapoleonWilson speaking of sleep... I am going to go get some :)

@steelerfan Now that football starts?

@NapoleonWilson I am DVR'ing :)
I had every intention of staying up for the morning game, but I am getting tired. I will be up by the afternoon game :)

@steelerfan What's your time right now. Is it 7:35? We had our DST shift yesterday and I think you have yours next week, so there should be 10 hour difference between me and the US west coast if I'm correct.
Wait no, I think 8 hours due to DST, so it should be 9:35?

4:36 PM
@NapoleonWilson 9:35 am. We have ours on the 1st of November I believe.
I wasn't aware DST was on a different week in Europe.

@steelerfan Well, I actually know it just because they emphasized it last week that football will start 1 hour earlier this sunday because of it. ;-)

@NapoleonWilson Gotcha. So, you have to watch the morning game in the evening? That would be weird for me

@steelerfan Well, it's quite nice. I wouldn't really get up on sunday morning. But watching football from 19:00-1:00 night is pretty great. And till now it didn't really collide with any sunday night movies I would have liked to watch.

@NapoleonWilson Oh, no. What movie is it interfering with?

It's worse with the playoffs/superbowl, which are quite a bit too late. But I tend to stay up quite long anyway and I usually take vacation on post-superbowl monday (like I do with the Oscars).
@steelerfan Nothing too serious (or unstreamable ;-)) either today. The Stromberg movie (spun-off from a TV show that is pretty much our The Office, and which I liked very much).

4:43 PM
Yes, I always take the Monday after superbowl off. They are actually trying to pass that Monday as a holiday in the US!

Patriots are still undefeated and Steelers lost. Arghhhhh :((

@steelerfan Well, interesting game, though.

@NapoleonWilson Yeah. Crappy day of football so far. Apparently Richard googled Steelers division and has all of a sudden become a Bengals fan. What is happening with the world? ;)

After some starting difficulties the Jets made a not so bad first half. And La Fell dropped like the 3rd or 4th pass. And that onside kick at the end that actually worked? They really made that exciting towards the end. But that's football, nothing is final till the end, even if the chance for Jets making an actual touchdown in 15 seconds were low, even after that successful onside kick.
Brady should just have passed the ball more to La Fell and not so much to Amendola in the second half and the Jets could have made it. ;-)
@steelerfan Well, the Bengals seem to be doing quite a good season actually, I'm not sure they lost a single game yet. I can't promise you that I won't root for them in the Steelers/Bengals game next week. ;-P

@NapoleonWilson Agreed! Brady is the anti-christ.

But you'll shortly get another Steelers question to answer as a consolation. ;-)

Wow, impressive timing, @NapoleonWilson

@NapoleonWilson oh.my.god. You are awesome for just posting this question! Will start working on it ASAP. Patience, I am on my i-pad.

So, I want to VTC that Stupid Star Wars question but I'm not sure how I feel about the current close reason... I suppose he is asking for a recommendation... which we don't do, really... and, in particular, he's asking for something that seems like a non-film recommendation... I'm confused.

9:35 PM
@Catija I actually do like that close reason Meat Trademark came up with and I'm glad that someone figured out an IMHO acceptable one when I couldn't be bothered to do so. I'll still see how the reviewers react, but I think it's not a bad close-reason.
@Catija Afterall, it's just a request for an external plot summary.

Yeah. That's true... and there are millions of those on the web, TBH.

Yeah, I would in fact just have read the Wikipedia summary if I was him, but well, I actually did watch the movie instead and am glad I did so, so...

@NapoleonWilson Yeah... I mean, really, there's something about the film that, regardless of the quality of the synopsis, or even novelization, it can't adequately explain the movie.
And, realistically, he's worried about nothing... the CGI, in and of itself, isn't bad... it's the fact that Lucas replaced stuff and added scenes and CGI that's bad.

Sure.
@steelerfan Thank you, it somehow just ocurred to me out of nothing like 2 hours ago or so.

@NapoleonWilson Wow. That would have taken me half a day to put that question together.

9:48 PM
@steelerfan Well, I had time to sort out the details during my bath. ;-) (The actual background I already knew to some degree from our answers to the first Steelers question.)

@NapoleonWilson I wish I could solve problems in the bath. I usually end up dozing off :) Steelers history is cool. They are a few teams still family owned by the original family that purchased them in 1933.

I'm starting to realize that Chris Hardwick is everywhere.

@steelerfan I didn't solve anything yet, all I did was come up with a problem. It's on others to solve it now! ;-P
@steelerfan Yeah, I found it cool that Thomas Tull bought into the Steelers after being a life-long fan. He didn't just buy some random football team as a status symbol but made himself part of a team he loved. That's how you ought to spend your money when rich, I suppose!

@NapoleonWilson That's why I love the Steelers. They seem to bring everyone together :)

10:04 PM
Well, the Raiders are pretty much wiping the floor with the Chargers now.

Hmm, you with your Doctor Who. Can't you review something people actually watch, like, uh, Arrow maybe? (Or well, rather not.) ;-P

@DrRDizzle Yeah, I figure that.
