Q: What do I need to know about tagging?

inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.MThis post is meant to be a guide on grasping the basic use of the $\color{blue}{\text{tagging system}}$ in Chemistry Stack Exchange. Answers: How to find out if a tag is good to have/make

@TanMath Thanks!
Hey @Ortho!

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M \o

How're you doing?
\o @Ghost

hello!

I have an essay on transition metal chemistry to do but no motivation to begin ):

@orthocresol Are you gonna typeset it using LaTeX?

9:45 AM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I wish, but my tutors don't seem to like typed essays. I did my very first thermo tutorial in LaTeX and my tutor told me "next time please write it out" so... Anyway it's inorganic so LaTeX isn't that useful haha
Anyway, I'll be off to do my work. Have a good day @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M @Ghost :)

@orthocresol :( I know that feeling; my physics teacher says "the dirtier the typesetting of your homework is, the more legit it'll look to me".

you too, @orthocresol!

@orthocresol Will you be there for TRE?

Is it at the same time, 1530 UTC? (so 1630 for me... back in UTC+1)

@orthocresol Yes.

9:47 AM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Okay I'll turn up!

Q: How would isomers of furan affect the NMR spectrum

Frank Loyer How would the first isomer there be different from

@Jan I don't even have mortarboard.

Jan
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Can we just nuke that quickly? >_>

@Jan We should first enlarge the second image . . .
How many ping sounds was that?

Jan
Actually I'm going to flag it as homework just because it is so bad xD
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Aaargh! He's at it again! D=

Q: Furan's HNMR signals and multiplicity

Frank Loyer Furan has two signals, right? One for the Ar-C and another for the C=C-H? What I don't know how to do is how to determine their multiplicity, how many H's produce the signal and the H neighbors

LOL

1:01 PM
@Jan I love the furan sizes. It's like Santa threw you a surprise gift box.

Jan
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M The furane ring is too big for my finger, though D=

@Jan You mean furan necklace?

Jan
I think I'll need a beta-lactame-ring so that it'll fit. I'll buy three just in case I loose two.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M More lika a furane cricket ground.
I'm a bit concerned with my voting statistics. 740 up, 134 down. I need to give more upvotes o.o'

@Jan why?

Jan
@Loong Because my statistics on German say 1851 up, 182 down ^^'
Two-and-a-half times the upvotes for almost the same downvotes o.o'

1:06 PM
Actually, I think, we don't have enough downvotes. Sometimes I see questions with two contradicting answers, and both answers have upvotes but no downvotes.

Jan
Here or on German?

here on Chemistry

Jan
We do get exceptionally bad questions here that we don't get on German, that is true.
And answers, sometimes.

I really would like to spend more of my reputation in order to downvote some clearly wrong answers even more than −1.
2

Jan
Just checked your vote count. I see why you don't see mine as a problem xD

1:13 PM
:-D
I think, I spend too much time with bad posts – maily due to editing. That's way I don't have enough time to enjoy and upvote the good answers.

Jan
And what about the good questions? ;)
I wish we had a modern polarimeter in our lab. Maybe one where you can enter the concentration, it does the measurement automatically and outputs standardised [alpha]D. The one we have is probably older than the building and I'm never sure how the heck to calculate properly */rant*

@Jan that also applies to questions. However, many questions are based on misconceptions, which take more effort to identify and to clear up than to answer the actual question.

@Wildcat come kitty kitty ... get your ><)))°>

@pH13 smells fishy

Jan
@wild Don't trust him! The cake ><> is a lie!

@Jan nope

Jan
@pH13 I'll show you how fresh my fish is!

then show it

Q: What would the be number of signals, multiplicity and integration in these C4H10O isomers

Frank Loyer CH3CH2OCH2CH3 -I know this one has two signals Would this have a singlet multiplicity and 0 neighboring Carbons? CH3OCH2CH2CH3 -I know this one has four signals Would this have a singlet, triplet and quartet?

Oh no, not again! >___>

This seems to be a homework vampire question ...

Jan
Sorry! I was using an HNMR spectrum and I have a table that says that between 7 and 8 is a Ar-H signal and at around 6 is the C=C-H signal. those are two signals and there is no overlapping like there is no signal on top of a signal that is hidden and would mean that there are actually 4 signals, right? — Frank Loyer 27 mins ago
Somewhere between hope- and priceless xD
Ha! He revealed it! They're all questions!

@Jan at this rate, you will drive him into question ban soon

Jan
1:41 PM
@Loong I'm really not sure if I think that is a bad thing ...

Q: Analytical Chemistry Textbook Recommendation

NanoputianCould anyone recommend a good book for self-learning that provide a clear, step by step guide on solving such chemical equilibria questions. It should cover the following topics: weak acid and strong base titration, buffers, redox reactions, electrochemical reactions, complexation reactions, po...

@Jan @Loong do you both also think, that he needs a book about analytical chemistry?
When I am reading this question, I have to think of my practical courses in inorganic chemistry

Jan
@pH13 Never ask me for textbook recommendations. I bought exactly one book during my studies and I regretted it later ^^'

it's not about a book itself, but just about the classification

Jan
(That was before buying the Kürti-Czakó during my PhD time.)
@pH1 yeah, JaBla sounds like a solid-ish recommendation from what I heard ...

1:59 PM
exactly
@Jan by saying pH1, basically you make me sour

@pH13 He is asking for titrations and related quantitative methods. I found the Jander Jahr quite useful for this.
But that was almost 20 years ago.

@Loong yes ... sure ... but is there an english version?
we had some good old GDR book for this practical course xD

Jan
@pH13 I love the double pun in there =D

@pH13 and do you still use the Organikum?

Jan
I still have my dad's Organikum He's actually a pharmacist.

2:09 PM
@pH13 Nice one, but still calls for a name change mister base.
TRE in 80 minutes.

@Loong one of the current editor's is a professor here - so of course it is recommended

@pH13 Yes, I have a PhD.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I'm not sure, if lolic chemistry is part of the organikum

@pH13 Then go do some research. Pfft.

@Wildcat ><)))°> ><)))°> ><)))°>

om-nom-nom...

@Wildcat do you have profound knowledge of the underlying math behind the calculation of the MEP?

@pH13, unlikely since I don't know what MEP means. XD

ESP

mean electrostatic potential?

2:33 PM
MEP ... molecular electrostatic potential

a, oh, molecular
:D
damn

daym
now that you know it ... does it change the answer?
xD

you mean the sexy stuff you can draw in, say, Avogadro around a molecule?

yes

well

2:35 PM
gaussian's cubegen is too slow and does not run in parallel, so I tought of how one could do a parallel version

maybe
I don't know :D
never used this

55 mins to TRE. Hey @pH13 will you help?

@pH13, have you tried other progs (Avogadro, Molekel, etc.)?

Q: Combustion Analysis for unknown samples containing oxygen

LordStrykerSo I feel silly asking this kind of question but for some reason I am in the 'zone of confusion' and I cannot seem to reconcile this. It is well known that an (ideal) combustion reaction follows the general framework: $$\mathrm{sample} + \mathrm{O_2} \longrightarrow \mathrm{CO_2+H_2O}$$ Let us...

LOL I wanna close that as homework.

I don't like those "it is known that", "we know ..." etc statements ...

@pH13 Hmm, have you met Lord before?

nope

Too bad for you, he's one of the previous chat regs.
Actually, he's the first owner of The Table, so.

and what shall I do with this information now?

2:41 PM
Go buy some chips.

so no reason for telling me

Actually, wait, no chips for you! (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻ Y U NO PARTICIPATE IN TRE?
BTW @pH13 has @Martin recently come to The g-block?

friends ask me to go to a FREE metal concert in the neighboring city ... me needz to go there now
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M @Loong is more often online, but I haven't seen him for a while

@pH13 And no TRE? Throws @pH13 into fluoroantimaniac

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Y U NO USE TEH GUN?

2:46 PM
Because watching you react is way more fun.

and please stop the time until I am dissolved
then we can at least answer some of those questions

Jan
@pH13 Free METAL concert? =O \m/ Where can I join?

@Jan it has a reason, why it is free ... xD

@pH13 It doesn't exist?
Oh.

I don't know even one of those bands xD

Jan
2:56 PM
That's okay. If it's free, one can drop by, drink a shot for every cover song and leave if they are bad ;)

that's the plan xD
it's about the expensive beer and the friends, with whom one can laugh about the bands

Jan
How's the alcohol per Euro ratio for beer compared to shots? xD

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M question gone?

@Loong Yeah. O.o

@Jan shots are always more expensive
so ... cu :)

And welcome!

Hello!

TRE in six minutes guys, who's ready? @Jan @Wild @Loong @Ont @pH13?
Huh, @Ortho's in time.

Q: What is meant by word on arrow?

PrincessWe say : \[\ce{Alcohol ->[\ce{KMnO4}] Acid}\] The alcohol forms a carboxylic acid, ie gains an $\ce{O}$ from $\ce{KMnO4}$. This means $\ce{KMnO4}$ is a reactant! Then why is it written above the arrow? What all do we write on arrow?

Input: This is about a formalism.

Jan
Something like but I don't want to add just like that ...

At least add something less vague, like inorganic chemistry or ionic compounds. :/

Jan
That actually misses the point of the question entirely, much like does xD

@Jan TODO: Ask on meta whether we have to expand the scope of nomenclature or do something like that.
Guys please note that needs to be applied to many questions it currently isn't.

3:44 PM
Well, the first one you gave me (chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/9716/…) is nomenclature of a reaction but currently the nomenclature wiki says it's only for molecules.

@orthocresol then.

Jan
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M That doesn't help mine, though, because it is not referring to something .__.'

Yeah.
Just leave that one. Exceptions come sometimes.
Guys there's so much to do, if you see time is being wasted thinking for the tags of a question, leave it to the end.
