Thank you for the tips @JamesLupolt and @PaulWhite! You've given me enough information to determine that I don't know what I'm talking about and have a lot to learn. I knew that, but I'm just reassured now that there's no obvious concept I'm missing.
My work around for the Replication that is blocking shrinking log file is:
1. Set DB Recovery Model to Simple
2. Take DB offline
3. Create backup of log file (just in case)
4. Delete log file
5. Bring DB online
In my case it worked. After bringing DB online log was created automatically and it's...
One of the tools moderators have available to encourage and reward high-quality participation (and beneficial behaviours in general) is to set and award bounties.
For example, in addition to their standard uses of drawing attention and rewarding model answers, I use bounties on Database Administ...
It might be a terrible idea. I doubt it will get any traction from TPTB, but I thought I'd ask to see what the reaction would be. People missed the point, I think. Or, I'm insane. Or both.
Don't upvote just because you feel sorry for me :)
I'll get the job done eventually with 3 bounties max, it's just a bit frustrating, and I can't for the life of me think why it should apply.
TPTB seem to be of the opinion that moderators should just be moderating and that any sort of encouragement/stimulation type of activity should be broader.
@Colin'tHart They might be right. But there's not that much actual modding (in the traditional sense) to do on dba because everyone's so well behaved and the posts are much better average quality than ahem some other sites.
Besides, I stood for election on a definite platform so I'm going to do everything I can to live up to that. Mistakes will be made, natch.
@dezso I don't care enough honesty. It's only meta :)
@Colin'tHart I understand (I think) some of the reasons why the problem exists, just thinking of a good way to encourage people out of their shells a bit.
It’s been 7 years and 10,000,000+ Questions since Stack Overflow was launched. The amount of good that has been done for the field - all the developers helped, all the man-hours saved, all the beginners who grew into professionals - is hard to overstate. I cannot express how proud I am of what ...
@Erik Too late. It's already closed, just for the wrong reason, which means it won't be merged with the duplicate from here ... long story, not really worth getting into.
I should really start a firm for consultants who refuse to wear pants.
I ordered a package from Amazon that said it would be 5-7 days shipping. It now however says that I won't be here until the 9/21 at the earliest and I bought this two weeks ago.
I know it's coming from China but I didn't think they were having a guy swim over here with it.
@billinkc that's not even necessary, I got all the passwords for our domain and MSDN account (interim domain admin during holidays), it's just that I don't want to do stuff i'm not supposed to behind their backs
Powershell is the truth, the way, and the light. There a quite a number of blog posts on setting up those aspects. I'm actually working on refactoring and updating my scripts, should have blog posts up on it over October.
The base machine builds are 'simple' enough, I actually finished up those scripts yesterday. I just have to now start writing the DSC resources to create my AD controllers and SQL boxes.
@MikeFal Looks like it's going to remain open on CR after all. Feel free to jump on there and suggest that. Looks like they have other performance optimization concerns too is why I thought it might fit better on DBA
i am just getting used to how this chat room works
@Zane ha - ok, replying late, but i can't seem to tell if you finally came up with a solution for this, i am struggling with getting msdn licenses and am tempted to just go buy a couple of developer editions and donate them anonymously
