Q: Why is trans-Cyclooctene chiral?

MarkoHow does trans-cyclooctene exhibit chirality if there are no stereocenters?

4:37 PM
hi @PH13 @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M @Loong

@ToddMinehardt howdy

ready for lunch, @Todd ?

yeah it's that time :)
you have dinner yet?

in ~1.5 hrs
last coffee for today

4:39 PM
I'm having hypo-dinner.

nice @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M :)
all quiet on the drama front, @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M?

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M the drama queen king ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ

Drama princess

@Todd ... belongs to the other chatroom, but do you know how to get a dot beneath a character in latex?

4:42 PM
@PH13 Didn't you succeed?

i know in tex, you can use \buildrel - so something like $\buildrel{R}\over{.}$
gives you the character R over a period (dot)

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M not enough
@ToddMinehardt but will the dot be "on line" or the char?

hm, MathType does this:
$\underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}{d} $

i believe the dot is on the baseline
try \stackrel, too - $\stackrel{R}{.}$
(stackrel is apparently the one that works in latex - see tex.stackexchange.com/questions/205062/…)

I'll switch to @in 's mathjax casino and try it immediately

4:50 PM
He wants something neat, and something neat should be reset in the preamble or using a weird package.

weird packages ftw

which of you guys are gonna claim the prize for answering the radon ideal gas question? :)

@ToddMinehardt you

no way
i think a more senior member of the community should respond :)

Like @ToddMinehardt

4:56 PM
oh, i'm honored, but i hardly have the rep that someone such as @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M does...

oh, i'm honored, but i hardly have the rep that someone such as @ToddMinehardt does...

so ... any seniors around? I'm under 30, so clearly no senior

How old are you @Loong?

hehe ... now you're the batman bad guy
no one of you all is skilled enough for quite advanced statistical questions, right?

Depends on what that stat is about.

5:08 PM
about linear regression functions and their standard deviations for generating prediction bands/confidence intervals ;)

I'm obviously advanced enough.

i used to know about that stuff

then tell me why Mathematica uses the "confidence interval for the expectation value Y[E(Y)] at point X=x" as their "Mean prediction band" and not the "prediction interval for a prospective observation Y at point X=x" ... PLZ HALP
as always vocabulary must not be right, as I am translating stuff from a german book

@PH13 That's an easy question. Think about pineapples for three minutes; you'll get the answer.

5:14 PM
Hastie's book usually has all the answers, IMO

I think, I'll have my second question for stats.se ^^
there is a new edition of my book ... need to buy it ... xD
oh no .. it will be available later this year
a) first the explanation of theory and the question afterwards, or b) the problem first and then the description of the theory from which to choose?

5:33 PM
@PH13 You should be able to get both, the confidence bands and the prediction bands.
Did you try SinglePredictionBands instead of MeanPredictionBands?

:O
will have a look

ok :D
so now I know at least which one from methatmatica is which one from my book
@Loong and it's not about the ability but about which one suits better

@PH13 Sure. That depends on the question that you want to answer.

Stats time!

5:44 PM
hmmm ... I htink I choose the prediction bands (single bla)
the mean prediction band is the confidence interval

Here is a list of users who did the real participation. All-time ranking.

who is Jannis?

thank you, I found the profile ... but never saw him :D
that's why I thought that maybe you know him

Q: Could an average person take over the world?

HDE 226868Joe, an average citizen, decides to take over the world (for various reasons). He's an average person, with an average job and average resources. Does Joe have a realistic shot at his dream? Some clarifications: By "take over the world", I mean - at the very least - control the United States,...

maybe with a superacid gun that dissolves humans?

There is a theory which states that this has already happened.

6:53 PM
@Loong Right. I have already taken over the world.
@PH13 Top voter.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M quod erat demonstrandum

Huh? Yeah, sure.

!

It's a meme on meta.
Meaning doing things only mods can do for normal stuff.
No negative connotation intended.

7:20 PM
@Loong BTW your message reminded me of "the shortest telegraph message ever".

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M :-)

IIRC it was between a book author and a publisher.
Hey @Mith!

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Oscar Wilde

The book author sent "?" . . . Yeah, him.

Hey!

7:24 PM
@Mithoron You're the 19th chem.SE valued associate!

I just saw this in your query :)

@Mart, as always, is the first.
What surprises me is that I'm above RON! OMG

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M stackexchange.com/leagues

@Loong Rep isn't the whole story IMO.

I think if this query counted votes on posts not number of posts it would be nice compomise

7:35 PM
@Mithoron I don't see your point.
What difference would it make?

goooooooooooooooood mooooooooooooooooooooooooorning

@santiago goooooooooooooooood mooooooooooooooooooooooooorning the fifth valued associate of chem.SE!

me? valued? lol

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M how many down/upvotes got posts not their number, also upvotes on comments

Comment upvote is inconsistent. Sometimes a funny unrelated comment gets upvoted.
Sometimes I get upvotes for my template comments.
That's not fair game for great commentators like @Nicolau and you and @Geoff etc.

7:40 PM
I am so trying to get a Pundit badge

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Yeah, but funny comments are also nice :)

I don't think I am anywhere near getting Pundit at this stage, not sure how to check though

8:03 PM
is there a script that accurately shows how close/far I am from a pundit badge?

A moment.
@San you have two comments with a score of 6.
Two with a score of four.

hmmm am wayy off

Six with a score of 3.
The best way to get pundit is to not think about it.

hmm if they all get upvoted then bam!
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M didn't think about it until I saw the chat here this morning

I was frustrated too once, then I went all "meh" and then one day "Woosh! I'm a pundit!"
@santiago Morning?

8:08 PM
its 6am here

Ahh.
Well, that doesn't change the fact that you're the fifth user in amount of contributions' ranking.

contributions?
my answers are not that great

Answers aren't the half of it.
Did you see that query I pinned?

looking now....
how in the 7 levels of hell am I above Klaus???
and Nicolau?!

See? You need to ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ more often.

8:12 PM
need to make more emojis?

Actually, the query gives me those tears people shed in movies and run in beaches shouting "I love you!".

lol

Which gives me a reason to be jealous of @Martin. ಠ_ಠ

for now

MWAHHAHAHAHA shh don't reveal my plans.

8:19 PM
I am catching up

I am sneezing.

i am far.....

I am me.
@santiago . . . from loooooooove?

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M no ....ting

That's plausible.

8:21 PM

Q: Database driven ACL using Php and MySQL

AshishI want to implement LINUX ACL in my Php, MySQL based application. Please help me by discussing best practices for table design.

ignore that...
I remember a saying once - that went along the lines of that watching paint dry would be truly magical when viewed at a microscopic and smaller level. — santiago 49 secs ago

@santiago Copy-paste error happens to the best of us.

look at the comment I just wrote
should upvote that comment
shower time!

@santiago I'll upvote it if it gets to 4.

8:40 PM
sure sure
anyway - still stunned by the notion that my measly contributions rank me 5th overall...lol, pretty funny
it was a stupid comment anyway

buoy buoy o/

@santiago You're second in cast votes - that's why :)

Hmm, I should make sure I know who I'm going to vote for in ELL's election.

@Mithoron aaaah that makes a bit more sense to me now.... I have voted alot, my "contribution" is not really from my crappy content or even my substandard behind the scenes stuff (editing etc), but because I vote a lot. That actually makes far more sense to me.

o/ \o /o \o /o \o

8:50 PM
Voting is very crucial for a SE
@PH13 |o

bye
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M otherwise I'd (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
and @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M finish your epic answer!

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M lol

I need to read your epic text

@PH13 Actually, I'm on it tomorrow.

I started an answer as well

8:52 PM
woohoo

To what?

let me know when it is finished
I'll append my answer on Geoff sometime this week

@PH13 If it doesn't rain goofballs I'm going to finish that answer for sure tomorrow. I need some repz.

but, like my numerous many starts, I will more than likely discard it

@San to what question are you writing an answer to?

8:53 PM
@santiago :C finish it :)
so .. cu tomorrow

I have not finished an answer for a while

Me too.
But to what question?
@PH13 Cya!

but like the last 12 answer starts, I will probably discard it

Do it.
Answer.
Quote some stuff. Quoting always gives me incentive to continue what I wrote.

we'll see (in any case, it won't be now)
I literally do not have the confidence to answer
I might just stick to reading and voting

9:00 PM
Now don't you go all like that now! WRITE THAT ANSWER!

I have been "like that" for a long while now, just some days I am better at hiding it
I stop myself from editing

Stop being like that.

I don't greet as much as I used to
as for questions, well I have dozens, but do not know how to word them to be suitable

> The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

that's just a saying

9:04 PM
I
have
found it true in many cases.

good for you

And in many cases on SE.
I was thought of screw this answer. Let's discard four times when writing my now highest voted meta.SE answer.
And three times when I was writing about why SO's bitter.

I have discarded my answer (wasn't much there), I might answer something else later

Pssh
1:30 a.m. I should sleep. Later @San!

seeya
maybe I'll surprise y'all with an answer, and a double surprise would be if it is actually good quality!.... maybe

1 hour later…
10:37 PM
Seriously, I don't think my contributions are of any notable quality (and please do not belittle me with comments like "one of those moods" etc). If, my main contribution is just voting, then it is not good enough at all...

11:33 PM
@santiago Umm, you beat me in everything besides comments, so I don't think you should be worried
