I am in the IB and writing my Extended Essay (a high-school 'thesis paper') in maths in which I will be:

a) investigating the public key value's importance in RSA.

b) finding an optimal value for the public key

If anyone has any good book/resource recommendations please post below.

P.S. It would be preferred if these were free. P.S.2 - I hope this is the correct forum for this question, even if I am only considering the mathematical aspect of it.

@Mathematica ... Asking for books is generally not considered good practice here.
However you asked on chat and not on the main page which is a plus for you
here's the standard reference for any questio regarding crypto:
@Mathematica I'm curious now: What is an optimal value for a public key?
And what did your teacher / prof / instructor / whatever meant by "importance of the public key to RSA"!?

@Mathematica, hopefully we can help. I agree with @sejpm that the questions you are asking are somewhat unclear. For optimal public key, you might look for a balance between speed and security with the public exponent, e.
The "value" of the public key in RSA could be a comparison between RSA which has public/private key pair, and something like AES that only has a private key. The two are very different and we wouldn't compare them in terms of efficiency as they achieve different goals.
Not sure if that helps.
