The end is nigh

O Great Optimizer, I beseech thee, bestow upon me your most excellent of golfing knowhow.

Is this what happens when people get to 20k??

They become deities to be worshipped.
They ascend to a higher plane of existence.

I dunno. I'd prefer to worship Sp if there had to be a golfability god.

Sp has the advantage of being benevolent

12:07 AM
We don't have to be monotheistic about it.

are we really gonna start worshiping numbers ?

@trichoplax Exactly. A Llama's a Llama, no matter how tall.
:P

You are the mom's favorite

Why?

12:36 AM
The worst thing is you know it's doing it on purpose

there is no cat, there is only your conscience that meows

It's a very pretty cat. I love that color on a cat.

I see a few places where there could be a cat, but the signal to noise ratio is way too low

@aditsu wait for it

If you can't see it, turn your brightness up :D

12:41 AM
I'll have to adjust it in gimp

paint should be enough

I don't have "paint", and OMG that's a cutie :)
I have 2 cats that look like that

have you woken up with one of them hiding in shadows right next to your bed ?
staring at you

nah, we don't let them into the bedroom; when I sleep on the couch, they sometimes get between my legs
anyway, if I undo the adjustment in gimp, I still can't see it

your monitor colors or brightness are in bad shape

12:47 AM

I just finished updating 1000+ windows 7 updates. took 6 restarts :D

you probably missed the most important one (Linux)

1:02 AM
they dont give that for linux

Been saving them up? Or do I have this to look forward to too?

maybe for 95
@trichoplax saving. last updated late 2013

Been offline for a while?

yes, I have been offline from internet for the last 2 years.
just came back online today

I meant that machine :P

1:03 AM
@Optimizer wb :)

:D no. just disabled them

So you're the one sending all that automated spam?

yes. it was me .

lol
I'm currently toying with the idea of getting a linux computer when my windows laptop dies

Mac
Get a Mac

1:14 AM
Any particular reason?

They're great

I was reading about people buying Macs and running linux on them

Why would someone do that
OS X is Unix-based

Good quality hardware deserves good quality software

OS X is the best OS I've used.

1:16 AM
I don't know - it sounded like some of them did it just because it's harder to do
I've never used Apple so I have no opinion

I'd say it's worth checking them out.

I've heard it's restrictive but I don't actually know whether that is likely to affect what I want to do

I have yet to encounter a situation in which I felt restricted by the OS
Or the hardware

Do you end up paying more for extra things?

OS X is not restrictive at all. The hardware is arguably more restrictive since parts can be harder to replace.

1:18 AM
@trichoplax That is not a bad idea

@Doorknob Yes it is
@trichoplax That's vague, haha. What extra things?

It's a pretty bad idea :P

@Doorknob That's currently more appealing than the Mac I'm being talked into here, due to price
@AlexA. The impression I get from a distance is that Linux has lots of programs free, and Mac has lots of programs at a cost
I'd like to spend on a machine, rather than paying extra for the OS with Windows or Apple

My Mac laptop is from 2011, has had 3 different versions of OS X on it, tons of software, etc. and it runs like a champ. I haven't needed to service it once.
@trichoplax With Mac you get a great machine with an OS that integrates exceptionall well with the hardware.
@trichoplax Mac has tons of free programs. Just depends on what you want to do.

@trichoplax My laptop is dual-booting Windows 8 and Ubuntu, but I never use the Windows part of it, only because it was too hard to find a good laptop with a Linux OS preinstalled.

1:21 AM
@AlexA. Does sound good. If I had lots of surplus money I might try it.

Even if it was free though, I wouldn't go with OS X.

Blasphemy.
OS X > Ubuntu
Ubuntu > Windows

@Doorknob Yes I have been thinking it might be cheaper to buy something with windows just because it's mass produced

OS X is actually amazing.

^ true facts right there
Sorry openSUSE, but Windows > openSUSE. :/

1:24 AM
I'd also like the option of having Windows for those odd occasions when I might want to use Excel for someone else

There's Excel for Mac

@trichoplax Yeah that too.
Excel for Mac? How does that even work?

@AlexA. Is it similar in price?

Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac
@trichoplax Don't recall. I got it for free in 2011 when I was still a student.

Ah OK

1:25 AM
I don't think it's expensive.
There's also Apache OpenOffice
That's better than LibreOffice, which comes preinstalled on Linux. It's bad.

I like OpenOffice for me - Excel would only be if I need to help someone else with it
I'm tentatively thinking Windows basic laptop with Linux, and more substantial desktop with just Linux

Microsoft now offers browser-based office that runs in the cloud that you have to pay a subscription fee for. Personally I think that's kind of dumb but it means you can access Excel on any OS.

@AlexA. LibreOffice is okay. But I usually just go with Google Drive anyway, unless the task is something more complex than "make a shopping list" or something

@AlexA. I think all MS Office is subscription now - you can't own it anymore (unless you already do)

I don't have the patience for LibreOffice to launch to just make a shopping list. :P
@trichoplax No kidding? That sucks. I don't like that subscription is the new trend, like with Adobe Creative Cloud.

1:28 AM
LibreOffice is fast actually

@AlexA. Nor me :(

@Doorknob They must have made it better since the last time I used it.

The only things I'd need from Excel are its formulae and VBA, which I don't use for me but might want to use for a job at some point

VBA is Windows only

Yes

1:30 AM
@PeterTaylor For the record, the tentative new policy is migrate first, ask questions later. Meaning that knowledge of topicality of other sites isn't as important anymore. And the fact that a user is a mod on, say, Cooking, doesn't mean they're also an expert on Bicycles. (Slightly devil's-advocate here though; I agree the question and the way he handled it were terrible)

@trichoplax So you wouldn't be able to do that with Excel for Mac, should you be entertaining that idea.

This is why I'm leaning towards Linux only desktop, but a little basic laptop to keep a link to windows
@AlexA. Although it's been interesting to hear about it, due to price I have at no point been entertaining the idea of a Mac :)

Aw bummer. Looks like we lose, @BrainSteel.

does victory dance

@AlexA. Are you lot on commission...??

1:31 AM
@Doorknob I'm glad you're our mod.
You do mod good.

A good mod is not guaranteed. We're lucky

@trichoplax Haha no, I just like to try to convert people to Mac.

Wait, someone wants VBA?

I wasn't going to say anything, but... ^

@AlexA. I also like the idea of an open source OS even if I never modify it

1:33 AM
Ah, you've got me there.

Fair. Though Mac is based on FreeBSD.

@BrainSteel I've used it in jobs before now so even though I never have a use for it myself, I like the idea of having access to it potentially

shudders

@AlexA. Thanks! :) Don't discount the efforts of the SO mods either though; I can say for sure that they have a much much harder job.

@trichoplax I've used it in jobs before too. Not anymore. Thank god!
@Doorknob Oh I don't at all. I just wanted to remind you that you're appreciated.

1:35 AM
I once downloaded an Excel spreadsheet that allowed you to play Pong on the spreadsheet.
I like to think that by using Windows I preserve the possiblity to play pong on a spreadsheet if I so desire.

By the way, the VBA Wikipedia Page lists Mac OS X as supported.

I learnt in BASIC, and transitioned to QBasic. Wrote a spheres-only basic ray tracer in that. It ran like cold treacle.

@feersum Very tempting argument...

There's still Excel on OS X.

@BrainSteel No support for VBA, which is probably what powered Pong

1:37 AM
@BrainSteel Mac is definitely not on the table at the price, so even VBA isn't going to sell it to me ;)

@AlexA. Wait, there's support for Excel and VBA separately?

"Visual Basic for Applications other than Excel"

Is that seriously the official name? O_o

lol no

@BrainSteel Not separately per se because there is no support for VBA on Mac for any application. I can honestly say that even though I end up using it (begrudgingly) fairly often, Microsoft Office for Mac is probably the worst software I have installed.
It's like they made software for Mac but didn't try very hard.
I might as well be honest about it if @trichoplax isn't going for a Mac. :P

1:40 AM
:)

@AlexA. Ummm... Are you sure? I haven't tested this, admittedly.

If I ever feel like spending that much money on a computer, I doubt I'll mind it not having VBA...
How is Linux with graphics cards?

Also, yes, Microsoft Office on the Mac blows.

@BrainSteel What the hell! I read that you could only use AppleScript with it (which is its own little circle of hell)

Yeah, I don't use Applescript at all. It's too English-like. Very off-putting.

1:49 AM
Haha

I want to communicate with my machine the way Dennis Ritchie intended!

I prefer my code to be a little more 日本人

Ostrich??
Uh, snowman? What happened to ostrich?

No, that was a while ago. And that was a golfing language.

1:51 AM
Oh okay. Has the first full version of Ostrich been released yet?

uhh... no, mostly due to me being lazy
Also because CJam and co. have already superseded that

Now we just need some challenges for Snowman to be used on :D

I plan to attempt the next challenge that I can reasonably attempt in Snowman, yes. :P

Nice, I'm looking forward to seeing that!
I don't know the first thing about making a programming language.

It's pretty simple.
function run(code) { ... }

1:55 AM
What goes in the ...?
That's the part I don't get.

if (ARGV[1]) run(readFile(ARGV[1])); else print("usage: ./somelanguage [filename]");
@AlexA. Probably just a loop over the characters of the code string. Or a tokenizer first if you wanna be fancy (that's what Snowman does)

There is much here for me to consider

If you just want to be fancy-ish, a regex tokenizer works pretty well. Then you just loop over the tokens and basically do a giant switch/case (or if-elseif-elseif-...-else.)

I have all sorts of lofty aspirations when it comes to programming, I just don't know how to do any of them. :/

Well hey, the best way to learn is to just try it out :P

1:58 AM
Some languages are easier to implement than others. If you design it really really well, implementation can come naturally :)
(or if it's relatively simple)

@Doorknob This wisdom has touched my heart.

"Panic at tokenize" would be a good name for a band.

I wonder which PPCG user stars the most chat messages

Well, if it's related to the amount a person upvotes/downvotes... My money's on Geobits.

I'd agree if only there were downstars
I feel Geo has a rule of equilibrium

2:14 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies Did you not hear? Those were implemented at the same time as sidevoting.

Sidevoting - officially refusing to take a stance

But the direction, left or right, can matter
@BrainSteel I swear I get you and @trichoplax mixed up all the time

Haha, that's new. How so?

I get Nathan Merrill and steveverrill (or whatever is name is) mixed up because their names are similar and their gravatars are both green.

It's the grayish avatars

2:25 AM
I've seen grayer.

@AlexA. I've seen birdlier

Now that's just slander.

Foul fowl

Haha
Fowl play
I haven't seen The Number One around here in a long time. I wonder what he's up to.
Hey, @PhiNotPi is in here.

2:48 AM
hi

How's it going? Lagging out in Minecraft while hanging out in chat?

composing music

Nice!
You should add a couple of @phi ping bonks.
I hope you've been keeping up with your vexillology.

3:22 AM
@AlexA. how rude!
just remember, I'm the one who loves KoTHs
:P

I think I found a new tiling that I want to simulate the game of life on
the tiles exhibit an infinite number of rotation angles

@Sparr I'm looking at it
how is that even possible

irrational angles and side length ratios

so, its not that every rotation angle gets represented

it doe
s
every angle gets equally represented, even :)

3:29 AM
...I don't think that's true

27.94582 degrees will happen as frequently as 27.94583 degrees

say Iteration 0 to Iteration N goes to -> 90 degrees rotation
then by iteration N*4, you will have made a 360 degree rotation, and completed the circle

"This substitution tiling is THE example of substitution tilings with infinite rotations. Its statistical and dynamical properties were studied in several papers by C. Radin, see for instance [Rad92], [Rad97]. In particular, it was shown that the orientations of triangles in the pinwheel tiling are equally distributed in the circle."

that still doesn't clear anything up

I'm not sure how your 360 degree rotation point is relevant.

3:36 AM
so, any given iteration has a rotation angle, right?
the triangle of size 1 is at 0 degrees
the triangle made up of 4 others is at X degrees

sure. one iteration, you get five smaller triangles at...
five not four

4 others
5 total :)

err, this is a substitution rule
the first triangle is replaced by 5 smaller triangles

ah ok
anyways, the smaller triangles are all rotated X degrees
plus a fixed offset for each of them
for iteration 2, they are rotated X*2 degrees
and so forth
if their rotation ever hits 90 degrees
then it will also hit 360 degrees
in a fixed number of iterations
you can't store an infinite number of rotations in a finite number of iterations
on another note
how familiar are you with javascript @Sparr ?

4:10 AM
@NathanMerrill do you have a Javascript challenge?

nope, I'm trying to do some designing*

ah ok

not describing XP
I really wish there was a "javascript way" just like there is a "pythonic way"

I was a little confused but assumed there was some context in which that made sense
Sure there is, you just have to use a linter

ok, tell me then
which is the proper way to create an object
because I know of 4
and a bunch of people arguing over which is best

4:14 AM
I think it depends on the use case for the object. Is it a small, short-lived object or a module

its actually a bunch of static data

Are you going to be creating a ton of them (thousands)?

no
here's my use case
consider a WxH board

Ok, so you probably wouldn't get much benefit from using the regular prototypical constructor then

each of them containing a cell
each cell has a certain type

4:16 AM
So a Cell is an object?

well, ignore the cell
its really the "types" I'm trying to store
each of the types has 6-7 pieces of data attached to it
but there is a lot of commonality between the data
so what I currently do is create a "default"type
then create a massive list of objects for each of the types, storing the data that is different than the default
and then do $.extend() on each of the types
there are 20 or so types
does that make any sense @grovesNL?

yeah inheritance is definitely a bit tricky and $.extend() may be one of the easiest ways to write it without worrying too much. I'm not sure about the 'massive list of objects for each of the types', is this just an array of these extended objects?

its actually an object
mapping the string to the actual type

ah I see
so is the current setup causing you issues?

no
but I'm still not sure if I'm doing it the right way

4:31 AM
if I were writing it I would probably make each Type an object but again it depends on how much overlap there needs to be, how much more you plan to extend these
in general it seems reasonable as long as it doesn't grow too unreasonably
everyone will recommend different styles about creating objects. you're right about that
these are small objects (basically structs in another language) so I wouldn't be too worried about design unless you think it will cause you massive issues with performance or something. they all seem to be fairly simple at this stage
however if this is going to be consumed anywhere else I would recommend is to wrap the either script.js in a namespace rather than using globals @NathanMerrill
