6:23 PM
@StefanoPalazzo: Are you there?
I can't get the lens to work.
(Using Oneiric 32-bit in VirtualBox.)
I followed these instructions but nothing shows up after restarting.

3 hours later…
8:56 PM
Anyone (care to take a stab at it)?

@GeorgeEdison Works for me

Works here too. that's weird

Any suggestions for debugging it?

I was talking about your search engine - does that work?

8:58 PM
It works... I've been working on it.

@GeorgeEdison you can start it manually and check if there's any weird output

I've almost got it to a point where we can embed it in the lens.
@StefanoPalazzo What command?

@GeorgeEdison what version of python-pygobject have you got installed?

@ajmitch Whatever Oneiric pulled from the repos.

sorry, that's not quite the right package name, let me look it up
@GeorgeEdison dpkg -l python-gobject

ii  python-gobject 3.0.0-0ubuntu3 Python 2.x bindings for gobject-introspectio

right, that won't work

How do I get the patch?

install python-gobject 3.0.0-0ubuntu4 from oneric-proposed

@GeorgeEdison You need the one from the PPA

not from the PPA
I'll remove the PPA one

9:02 PM
Which PPA... the AU Tools PPA?
I have to admit this is the first time I've heard of oneiric-proposed.
How would I add that to my software sources?

it's definitely better to use the one from oneiric-proposed & then give feedback on bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/855402
it's probably already there but not enabled
I don't exactly have a standard sources.list so I can't give an accurate answer - but it should be in the Updates tab under Software Sources

K. I'll check there.
P.S. Does anyone know what package provides the Ubuntu Monospace font?

it's where all updates go for regression testing before being copied into -updates
ttf-ubuntu-font-family

@ajmitch Sweet, thanks.

@GeorgeEdison lens working for you now?

9:17 PM
@ajmitch Still adding the source...
This VM is a little slow.
[Package updated... restarting VM...]
The lens still didn't load :(
@StefanoPalazzo: What command starts the lens?

I forgot (: let me find it
@GeorgeEdison /usr/lib/unity-lens-askubuntu/unity-askubuntu-daemon

9:34 PM
Okay.
@StefanoPalazzo:
Failed to own name net.launchpad.AskUbuntuLens. Bailing out.
Do you have another instance running?
Try grepping unity-askubuntu-deamon in ps aux
and kill the process.
Ah, I bet that means it's already running.
Now I get:
(process:1375): libunity-DEBUG: unity-scope-factory.vala:57: Searching for Scopes in /usr/share/unity/lenses/askubuntu
entering the main loop
Search changed to: ''
...and nothing happens.

@GeorgeEdison that's good I guess
means it's waiting for you to do something
the lens should appear in the dash now, it might take a second

It's not in the dash.

you can try restarting unity

"unity &" should be fine (don't forget to disown)

9:39 PM
Okay.
Uh-oh:
nathan@ubuntu-vm:~$ Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/unity", line 21, in <module>
    import gconf
ImportError: No module named gconf
@StefanoPalazzo I've completely restarted and it still didn't work.
The daemon starts but no lens.

huh
I've no idea why

@GeorgeEdison what does the dash look like?

Like the screenshot above.

that screenshot shows nothing of the dash

Oh the dash.
Sorry about that.

9:44 PM
yes, the dash
where you search from - it's not immediately obvious where the AU lens is
especially as the icon needs fixing up

There's the dash.

@StefanoPalazzo I've got the LP icon showing for my lens, so I'd need to check why your one doesn't show for me :)

oh I forgot about that, @GeorgeEdison the lens doesn't have a proper icon yet, it just looks generic
there's a fix for that, I need to merge that

@GeorgeEdison try with the icon beside the home icon, at the bottom

Ooooooooooh.
I see it now - that's the one.

9:46 PM
you seem to be missing the documents, apps and music lenses

I should probably hunt for a monochrome LP icon, I've currently got it showing in colour

I did apt-get install ubuntu-desktop --no-install-recommends.
That's why some stuff is missing.

that would do it
spot the odd icon out :)

Do you guys need an SVG of the Ask Ubuntu logo?

I think there already is one

9:49 PM
I made one last time around, it must be somewhere

it was still in the branch iirc

let me check mark's patch

yeah, I've got ~/branches/askubuntu-lens/askubuntu-logo.svg

8 -Icon=/usr/share/unity/lenses/askubuntu/askubuntu-logo.svg
9 +Icon=/usr/lib/unity-lens-askubuntu/askubuntu-logo.svg

he was just fixing up the path to it

9:51 PM
@ajmitch that should actually be in /usr/share, no?

@StefanoPalazzo right, the icon itself is being installed into the wrong place
I've got mine going into /usr/share/unity-lens-launchpad/launchpad-lens.png

Hmm... works great except my server is down.
It's a bit latent but considering that I'm running a VM and my net connection is already quite latent, I'm not worrying about it.

can you tell I'm a bit preoccupied.. :\ I'll try to fix/merge all of this stuff tomorrow

@StefanoPalazzo so am i :)
@StefanoPalazzo the icon itself is currently installed into /usr/share/unity-lens/askubuntu/askubuntu-logo.svg which is what askubuntu.lens should point at
just to be confusing & all

right, got it
I'll fix that. what can possibly go wrong. :D

9:56 PM
the world explodes
this just means that you end up throwing away most of that merge proposal

Okay, everything is working now.
My data server is available now.

great

Did we ever decide on how to make additional servers discoverable by the lens?

@MarcoCeppi I think so.
We were going to create a /servers route on the server (the audataserver.com domain).
It would list all available servers.

okay, cool
I'll work on that then, everyone okay with JSON? good.

10:03 PM
Sounds fine to me.
I'll set up a shared Google Doc to document the spec.

10:53 PM
Wee, that was fun

Yeah.

11:51 PM
P.S. The change is deployed now.
