02:00 - 11:0011:00 - 22:00

2:25 AM
That was intense! As soon as we saw that hot mess of a little girl I knew she was going to be in peril at the end. I also knew I was going to enjoy the last scene with Waingro. I only hated that he died so quickly.
What a vile character.

2:38 AM
I liked the last 4 crooks (but I think that was kind of the point)...
:)
The best line was not, "Are you a fucking owl?"
The best line of the whole movie was, "But you may not watch my fucking television!"

3 hours later…
5:43 AM
@jolenealaska yeah, that's a great one. The final bank robbery and ensuing chase is iconic.

The chaos was amazing

As for Waingro, I think the ol' double tap to the sternum gave him a few seconds to realise what was going on. But Neil had stuff to do!

I was really impressed with the whole cast. Even the teenage hooker was just spot-on.

At least one robbery has been carried out in the same manner as the opening one. Knocking a armored car over with a truck

ballzy
At first I thought the actor that played Van Zant was the same bad guy as in Ghost.
Have you seen Ashley Judd as Marlyn Monroe (before she Monroe...what was her name??) doing the nude pin-up scene?

5:57 AM
Ah, no. But both guys are in lots of stuff
Nope
Hmm, no email this morning, how odd

If you're curious. NSFW obviously:
I'm just tongue-tied (so to speak)

If you liked Heat, you might also enjoy Ronin
Different vibe but still excellent, another Deniro film
My recommendation for a Sunday afternoon western is still Open Range.
Perhaps the finest Western gunfight committed to film

I probably would like Ronin. I have an automatic prejudice against westerns, but I know it's silly.

Oh man, give Open Range a chance

I will.

6:04 AM
It is more or less perfect

I like Kevin Costner a lot.

He's good in open range. And Robert Duvall? Forget about it!

I had no idea...TNG is Ashley Judd's first acting credit on IMDb.
It's a wonder she ever got out of the gate.
What an awful episode...

If that episode (The Game) was my first TNG episode, I never would have watched it again.
What a shame that would have been.
Doesn't that episode open with Riker on Risa with a green bimbo, or something like that?

6:17 AM
I can't recall
I've seen it once, I think
Outlook open?

one time too many.
yep
Judd redeemed herself. Her other TNG episode is Darmok.
I never really noticed Val Kilmer before this.
Am I right that the crooks in Heat don't kill anyone (but other crooks) until the final shoot-out? Not Waingro...but the others?

6:47 AM
WTF is Greece going to do now?? blu178.mail.live.com/…

They kill the guards at the beginning because Waingro flips out.
Lol, and I can't log in to your email to read about Greece :)

I think the fact that all the Greek politicians wander around in t-shirts and jeans says a lot
Even the PM refuses to wear a tie

The whole thing makes as much sense as me pitching a bitch to MasterCard.

7:02 AM
What a colourful turn of phrase
I have a plan for Greece. They're advising all tourists to take all their spending money as cash. Most countries limit the amount of cash you can bring in. Simply lower that threshold to, say, 1000 euros and seize it at the border. Instant cash injection!

That'll teach 'em!
It's pretty damn ridiculous anyway. They've got the Parthenon and the Colosseum, but they can't balance their damn checkbook?

And before Faheem comes along and points out how stupid that is, I know dude, it's a joke

tourism=free money awesome ancient ruins = tourism What am I missing?

7:18 AM
Apparently it was standard cultural practice that, if someone gave you an invoice (doctor, plumber whatever), it was always for half of what they actually wanted. So you'd pay the other half cash, which they naturally wouldn't pay tax on
They are the architects of their own demise

unreal...so now what??

Idk
Checking your email is the first thing to do

You're killing me here!

Lemon juice, cranberry juice, Celestial Seasonings Red Zinger tea, club soda, brown sugar, powdered ginger. Mix to taste, serve with ice in tall glasses.

@besw hello. Is that your answer to Greece's problems or just a killer virgin cocktail recipe?

7:29 AM
Current version of a drink I'm working on. So far very successful.

It sounds great.

My friends are calling it cranteade.

What is the flavor of Red Zinger?

It's a fruity/citrusy hibiscus. Cuts the tart of the cranberry while buoying its flavour.
Next time I may try adding ginger teabags to the red zinger instead of using ginger powder.

I'd prefer it without the ginger I think, but that's me
You could use ginger beer

7:32 AM
I tried a few different teas, and none were awful but red zinger was best.

Or even syrup from preserved ginger

Or I could add fresh ginger shavings to the pot of tea.

I love the syrup from sushi ginger.

It's a very versatile recipe; just lemon/cranberry/brown sugar gives a nice kick to the lemonade.

I always end up with dry ginger.

7:34 AM
I tried honey, but it got in the way of everything else.
(Made the drink a much nicer colour, though; brown sugar muddies it up.)

Could use simple syrup

Have you tried agave?

I'm not a fan of agave, but a brown sugar simple syrup is in the future plans, when I've got the time and willingness to clean a pan afterward.
(Also, I'm not going to make a simple syrup for this until I have something to steep in it, like mint leaves.)

Sounds good. So, what have you been up to @besw? Long time no see!

Busy with work and family stuff. Also took a few weeks to go to the States and see old friends and relatives.
Been putting pumpkin in bread dough and using a tea infuser for plunged coffee with spices brewed straight in.

7:40 AM
Busy busy

What part of the States? Hot??

Northern South Carolina and western New York.
Got pretty hot in SC toward the end of my stay.

Way too hot for me!

Hotter than I'm used to, too. And NY got cold for a while.

Hotter than Guam?!
Yowza

7:45 AM
Guam's pretty temperate--75 to 85F most of the time.

That's not awful...85F is pushing it, but occasionally it hits that even here.

Our humidity averages between 60 and 98 throughout the year though.

And I become a raving bitch, but that's another story.
UGH

I'm used to it--my lips chap in what other people call humid weather.

Evidently you are partly amphibian. I suggest developing a waxy costing.
Or coating
Or coating

7:50 AM
To make matters worse...humidity makes my hair frizz.

Hmmm, something must be wrong with my email...

hmmm...

Yeah, I've been finding various things to keep my hair under control.
Tea rinses are good, especially if I want to coax my colour one way or another.

Red zinger tea?

If you want to bring out any red in your hair, sure.
Black tea makes it darker, chamomile brings out highlights, etc.

7:58 AM
And you can use it afterwards for cocktails :)
One part cranberry, one part lemon juice, one part tea, half part dandruff

Heheh.

It's called the Head and Shoulders

This scene kills me. Lets bring our young children to the crime scene tape!
Might as well educate them early.

@ElendilTheTall Yes, you're using Windows.
(Actually, that is speculation. But likely, statistically speaking.)
@ElendilTheTall I wouldn't dream of it.
@ElendilTheTall You mean, increase the threshold, presumably.
@ElendilTheTall Common practice in India, except that here it is all in cash. We really should be the ones having the debt crisis.
Actually, it occured to me that Greece could say to the rest of the world, e.g. Britain, that they will pay their debt if the world returns all the artifacts that were stolen from Greece. E.g. the Elgin Marbles.
Fair is fair.
@ElendilTheTall Something wrong with t-shirts?
Wow, Greece looks on the verge of a full-scale meltdown.

8:17 AM
S.H.U. Prison lingo...???

@Jolenealaska security housing unit
solitary, in other words
@FaheemMitha incorrect. I'm using Gmail, which is platform agnostic, and specifically Android, which is *nix based

Ah....not 4 star accommodations.

one imagines not

@ElendilTheTall You use your phone for writing email?

@FaheemMitha amongst other devices, yes
why not?
with IMAP it all synchronises
@FaheemMitha you don't use your phone for writing email?
@jolenealaska why do you ask about SHU... have you been organising crime in Anchorage again?

8:37 AM
Watching Heat again.

ah, lol. getting your money's worth?
I have never seen Vincent's wife in anything else, but dayum!
(to clarify, this is not Vincent's wife)

The scene with the 16 year old hooker just tears me up. Can there be anything more tragic than turning tricks as a teenager and getting killed for it?

hi @Jolenealaska @ElendilTheTall @FaheemMitha

Hey Jude!

@CrazyNinja hi

8:41 AM
She actually has quite the resume.

but oddly, nothing else that I've seen
¯_(ツ)_/¯
@Jolenealaska you might like Michael Mann's other 'ode to LA' Collateral
Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx
different premise entirely, but similar atmosphere

The photo on that page is gorgeous. She has mostly acted on stage, but she has guest starred on that show I like with Shemar Moore as eye candy.

she's not unlike Jessica Lange

Hmm...I would not have grouped those two together.

@ElendilTheTall No.
It's awkward to type much on it.

8:48 AM
@FaheemMitha how very singular
what phone do you have?

@CrazyNinja Hi

@Jolenealaska similar cheekbones

@ElendilTheTall Just an ordinary android phone. Indian make. Micromax Canvas Hue.

now that I think about it, Eady is pretty fine as well

The Jackal!

8:49 AM
Amy Brenneman
@Jolenealaska that film doesn't exist. Only The Day of The Jackal with Edward Fox exists

I liked her in a series a decade or so ago....Judging Amy.

@FaheemMitha what version of Android does it run?
anything before 4.2 was clunky as hell

@Jolenealaska that film doesn't exist

Oh...I haven't seen any of it to know it doesn't exist.

8:51 AM
@ElendilTheTall It says 4.4.2. It's not the version. It doesn't have a proper keyboard. And my hands are quite large. Awkward.
I suppose I might use it if I had no other choice.

evidently my fingers are rather deft

@ElendilTheTall Apparently.

I do half my browsing, emailing and everything else on my phone

I use it for calling people. That's pretty much it.

you might as well have a nokia dumbphone and save yourself the electricity bill of charging a smart one

@ElendilTheTall :The interface is a bit better, so no. Also, it has a nice camera.
And there are some other marginal benefits in having a phone that is actually a small computer.

ah, so you use the camera as well
@Jolenealaska you've posted that before

@ElendilTheTall Sometimes. And text messaging. That's very popular here.

It cracks me up.
I hate texting.

@Jolenealaska me too.

8:56 AM
Why that better than emailing or calling?
And seems to require a more immediate response...which I don't appreciate.
I may be busy at the moment.

@FaheemMitha SMS is being taken over by more online-based services here - whatsapp, facebook messenger and the like
I only use SMS when I don't have a data connection
And I almost always have a data connection

@ElendilTheTall Whatsapp is huge here. But based on what I know about it, I don't think I will use it. Similar comments apply to Facebook.
And I don't have a date connection on my phone. Maybe if I travelled.

good grief
I have unlimited 4G data on my smartphone
go hard or go home

I just got my first smart phone as a hand-me-down a couple months ago.

I like being able to read books (it pretty much replaces my lost Kindle) and I like having a tiny TV in my pocket.

9:01 AM
@FaheemMitha the main advantage of whatsapp is that it's free to send messages provided you have a data connection
so even if you don't have one over the cell network, it's still handy over wifi
and it's much better for sending photos and videos

Still using my Motorola Razr pre-paid no-frills call-and-text sim card, but I can, for example, use Whatsapp over wireless networks despite having no data plan at all.

I got my first a month or so ago too...It was a bumpy ride.

you can also do things like group chats and broadcasts

And, yes, I use it for ebooks all the time too.

I have a kindle for ebooks - I hate reading for extended periods on my phone
backlit screens, ugh

9:02 AM
Read Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell on the plane trips.

@BESW I started that after watching the BBC series that has just been on

Had I not lost my Kindle, I would probably still have my dumb phone.

but goddamn, it would be good if something happened

@ElendilTheTall Both versions are quite good, I think.

I prefer the Kindle, but I can live without for now.

9:03 AM
But yes, the novel takes a lot more time with the buildup.

@BESW she does an excellent job of the Austen-style writing, but jeez, yawn
have you read any Patrick O'Brian?

Don't think so.

do it now, thank me later
it's not quite as balls-out Austenian as Norrell, but O'Brian's characters could happily converse with Austen's, put it that way
it's a series of novels set in the Royal Navy in the Napoleonic Wars
some of the finest writing ever committed to paper
The Aubrey–Maturin series is a sequence of nautical historical novels—20 completed and one unfinished—by Patrick O'Brian, set during the Napoleonic Wars and centering on the friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy and his ship's surgeon Stephen Maturin, a physician, natural philosopher, and intelligence agent. The first novel, Master and Commander, was published in 1969 and the last finished novel in 1999. The 21st novel of the series, left unfinished at O'Brian's death in 2000, appeared in print in late 2004. The series received considerable international acclaim and most of the...
you may have heard of Master and Commander, with Russell Crowe?

Ah, yes. I've heard of that series.

it's just excellent
Jojo, you read it too, that's an order

9:06 AM
Someday I'll probably give it a shot, since it's been recommended by the woman who introduced me to Lois McMaster Bujold.

everyone should know what a futtock-shroud is

(And she likes Stella Gibbons and Margery Allingham, so I know her taste is compatible along a fair range.)

@Jolenealaska that's the one

Yes, we have spoken of it before.
It's on my phone!

9:09 AM
read it, and you'll be signing all your correspondence "I remain, etc etc, Jln. Brown, Esq."

I know of the series

but have you read it?

I haven't gotten into it yet partly because there are 21 books!
I admit I have barely looked at it, but I will.

@ElendilTheTall Yes, I see all that. But I'm concerned about privacy/security issues.
And once you install something on your phone, you have no idea what it is doing.

@FaheemMitha pff, what are you sending that you care about that?

9:12 AM
People really should be using email. That's free too.
@ElendilTheTall Dunno. I don't want to have to keep thinking about it.

if you're worried about privacy, you shouldn't have a smartphone full stop
heck, you shouldn't have a computer

@ElendilTheTall Hmm, you're probably right.
@ElendilTheTall No, that's carrying it too far.

anyone who could do you any harm with information on your phone could do you harm without it anyway

I figure I'm not that interesting, and if you want my identity, you can have it.

@ElendilTheTall Thus speaks the man who won't tell us anything about himself.

9:14 AM
@FaheemMitha you notice that too, huh?

@Jolenealaska lol

@FaheemMitha there's a difference between declaring personal information to anyone who wonders into a public chatroom, and maybe having your texts read by a faceless organisation that wants to sell you stuff

@ElendilTheTall True.

I spend 40 hours a week with him, and I don't even know his name!

Personally, I'd be more worried about the faceless organization (or organizations). Especially if one of them happens to be the NSA.
@Jolenealaska Yes, you guys are good buddies.

9:16 AM
Funny thing about NSA...

And I don't think the NSA is concerned about selling you stuff...
@ElendilTheTall the sort of thing I guess I'm worried about it some app going through my phone list and using it to spam people. And that's just one example.

A big difference between Tall and me is that I am only concerned about myself. I don't have children or a spouse that are also my concern.

I'm looking forward to the day when I have a phone that can run Debian. Hopefully that day will come.
@Jolenealaska Everyone needs to be concerned with privacy issues.

@FaheemMitha Do you know that I worked for NSA?

@Jolenealaska Yikes. No, I didn't. You really do get around. How was it?

9:20 AM
Short lived. I worked for them during Desert Shield/Storm.
It was at the end of my time in the Army.

@FaheemMitha I have never heard of that happening
certainly not with WhatsApp
WhatsApp is huge, they're not going to spam anyone

hello everybody

Hi rumi!

@FaheemMitha the NSA could (and probably do) know everything about you even if you'd never so much as held a smartphone

but they don't really care

9:24 AM
precisely

so much data is pretty meaningless.
It's like looking at the human genome if you're not clear on XX and XY.

indeed

@rumtscho did you get some sleep?

but in any case, a smartphone is just the cherry on the top

@Jolenealaska yes, it cooled down a bit

9:30 AM
if you use the internet, they can find everything about you just by backtracing your IP

The storm we hoped on didn't come, but it was 27 C when I woke up

Much better!

your IP address gives them your location and ISP. then they hit up the ISP to get your address, then they've got everything that registers to that address: phones, utilities, family members, job, everything

I still wish I could take a free day instead of doing heaps of work, but I guess this will have to wait

so if they wanted to fuck you over, a smartphone is really not necessary

9:32 AM
But you do not get to watch my fucking television! Great line.
Is Jon Voight made up to look older...or did he really look that old 20 years ago?

> I gotta hold on to my angst. I preserve it because I need it. It keeps me sharp, on the edge, where I gotta be.

Another great line, 'cause it really sums up the character.

@Jolenealaska ok. And how was it? Interesting?

It had its moments.

@Jolenealaska ok

9:40 AM
she could tell you, but she'd have to kill you

over half a lifetime ago...

Hi

@Gigili Hi. Welcome here

Hi @Gigili. It seems the gang is pretty much all here tonight.

You're probably wondering why I called you all here tonight...

9:50 AM
:)
We haven't this many people in here at one time in ages.

It rhymes

ok jojo, take it away with the opening number
also, CYE

Operation Petticoat?

Hi @rumtscho. How are you?

10:05 AM
so many people in here...yet so quiet!
Am I not the only one at a rare loss for words?

...
How do you make a tortoise run?

@Jolenealaska That's impossible.
For you to be at a loss for words, I mean.

@FaheemMitha It does seem a bit out of character, doesn't it?
@ElendilTheTall how?

@Jolenealaska put it in a blender
badumtish
How do you make a duck sing soul?

@ElendilTheTall That needs a musical sting.

10:14 AM
Blender=run?? Is that a British thing??

@Jolenealaska if something is liquidised, it is runny...
it therefore runs
i think that applies even in American English :P

barely

then you need a better blender
what do you get hanging from banana trees?

sore arms?

yay! your turn

10:25 AM
How many perverts does it take to put in a light bulb?

I don't know jojo, how many perverts does it take to put in a light bulb?

Just one, but it takes the entire emergency room to get it out!

Can I substitute milk for rose water in vanilla cake?

@Gigili my instinctive answer is no

10:26 AM
,.@Gigili no need/

certainly not in the same quantity

Rose water should just be a flavoring.
If you don't want it, just skip it.

Right, but it's only 1/3 cup milk

How much does your recipe call for?
(of rose water)

1/3 cup milk plus 2/3 cup yogurt => butter milk

10:29 AM
just use water
unless you specifically want the rose water taste

It's common to add vinegar or lemon juice to milk to substitute for buttermilk.

personally I can't stand the stuff, but different strokes etc

@ElendilTheTall I don't like it either.
I think rumi fell asleep at her keyboard.

alright, let's broaden our minds
pop quiz, what is that a reference to ^
10 Elendil points are up for grabs!

She was tired!

10:38 AM
@FaheemMitha I'm well, thanks. I was at lunch, just came back. How are you?

@rumtscho I'm doing Ok.
Not much happening at the moment. Trying to buy a water heater.

"trying to" sounds like a more complicated process than I usually go through.

You woke her up!

@ElendilTheTall I like the taste of the combination of rose water and cardamom

@Jolenealaska woke whom up? I wasn't asleep, I was away.

10:41 AM
I was joking.

@Gigili rose water is very much an acquired taste, I believe, and you would naturally have had more chances to acquire it based on your location

@Gigili don't listen to the Englishman on matters of rose water. I'd say put it in the cake.
Oops, I wrote that just as he put forth a reasonable opinion on it, sorry

@rumtscho Shopping is such a pain. Well, you need to shop around.
I hate doing it, but when I don't do it, I usually end up regretting it. It's particularly necessary in a place like India.

Yes, I know what you mean. Both the "such a pain" and "necessary" parts.

@rumtscho Thank you for your satisfying reply
@ElendilTheTall Right

10:46 AM
@rumtscho there's no need to sound so surprised

@ElendilTheTall I wasn't surprised. I noted that my snarky reaction to your earlier remarks was out of place after you wrote more, so I apologized for it. I guess my intention/emotions were hard to convey over a reduced communication channel such as chat.

@rumtscho i was only teasing, don't worry ;)

I've never thought of it as any different than any other flavor on my spectrum of likes/dislikes. If 0=tarragon and 10=chocolate, rose water is like a 2 on my scale.

The Alaska Flavour Scale

Maybe a three with a very delicate hand.

10:56 AM
Measured in millitarragons
or perhaps that should be millichocolates
or you could work it like the Scoville scale for chilli - how much water does it take to completely dilute it
how much tarragon does it take to make me want to throw the bowl and the table it sits on out of the window prior to puking on the floor

@Jolenealaska don't forget that rose water is a very common flavoring in Middle eastern dishes, especially sweet ones
You'll find a ton of American recipes which put some vanilla in sweet stuff which is not supposed to have a noticeable vanilla aroma
just because the familiarity of vanilla makes it taste better even when the eater doesn't realize it's in there
if you had grown up that way, it's highly unlikely that you'd see rose as "just another taste"
