@Hakase cant chat. Stupid laptop's got a virus called kukacko or sm sheet. And its all over the place. Im so screwed . Ttyl

What did you do to get that into your laptop?

probably too much hentai

I have no idea. I restored the system to a a recovery point. But that just shit worse. Chrome and firefox are compromised

o_o

Made*

4:09 PM
Do you surf with ad block or no script?

Lol @fro nope
Ad block

all according to kukacko

This is baaad. Cant find any infections. But the virus is said to modify the settings so that it wont be detected

@EroSɘnnin what os
try looking up a reset to factory settings

@tosh how bad is a kukacko infection?

4:15 PM
Kukacka is all I find on the net

Win7

you might have to try reinstalling your OS :(

@EroSɘnnin no idea I'm afraid

just reinstall OS

@EroSɘnnin what's your laptop's make?

4:15 PM
the surest way

No idea, then, probably a new malware

I recommend making the change to a Linux distro while you're at it ;D

Recovery point? Yeah I did try that

backup your important files -> reinstall OS

^^^^^ i second that

4:16 PM
windows' own recovery is meaningless

Gao
MS Recovery is FAIL, just reinstall or change OS (I hope you have backups).

don't forget to copy the important stuff from the OS partition

Lol. I like windows. @Tosh toshiba :p

and don't do whatever you did to get that lol

Gao
4:17 PM
How do you know that the malware won't propagate to your USB/external hard drive when you do backups now?

@nhahtdh umm yeah I think its kukacka

@Gao scan it before you put it in your new OS

If you read the article, it seems to hop to USB drive, so you probably need safe mode or something like that

Gao
@Frosteeze Not bullet-proof. Malware scanners' detection rate is pretty low.

4:20 PM
@Frosteeze no point in that
don't waste time on antiviruses
if you don't run executables from previous OS installation, you will be fine
unless you do something silly like install browser extensions from suspicious vendors which gave you the thing

Gao
@Hakase I don't think that's true. Even text files can be hazardous.

@Gao if you have stupid Explorer extensions, yes

Gao
Afterall, they're all just data.

but by default you don't and Windows takes care of default vulnerabilities

Well, reinstalling works for most virus out there, except for some top grade malware, which embed itself to HDD firmware

4:22 PM
so make sure not to install suspicious extensions for pretty much anything coz it might be the source of malware and viruses
@nhahtdh never heard of that, how does it work?

that sounds scary ._.

Let me find the article

I blame minecraft :p Its the only thing I updated this week

could be it
many players, probably you have some mods that could have been compromised

if you use mods
yeah

4:23 PM
the more stuff you have the more possibilities

Search for EquationGroup
It's state-grade malware
I'm on a crap tablet, so pardon me for my laziness

I didn't find any details right away and I'm not interested in digging up a bunch of scary stories on the internet
it's ok

Gao
@Hakase Google Are Text-Only Data Formats Safe

It's covered by kaspersky

The Equation Group is a highly advanced secretive computer espionage group, suspected by security expert Claudio Guarnieri and unnamed former intelligence operatives of being tied to the United States National Security Agency (NSA). Because of the group's predilection for strong encryption methods in their operations, the name Equation Group was chosen by Kaspersky Lab, which discovered this operation and also documented 500 malware infections by the group's tools in at least 42 countries. == Summary == At the Kaspersky Security Analysts Summit held in Mexico on February 16, 2015, Kaspersky Lab...

4:26 PM
ugh…
safe in what exact environment?

@Gao I'd say text files are safe, unless there are bugs in the program opening them

Gao
@nhahtdh Windows has too many bugs, and all OSes have bugs.

Im on crap phone. Have to refresh to see new msgs

I remember there was a vulnerability in some Windows version that made the Explorer read files to generate thumbnails and other such things. One of them could run some code and it did. I caught a virus like that before. It's not a text file problem, it's the OS that is at fault.
it's like saying guns kill people
there are a lot of details and special circumstances involved for that to be true

Gao
Yea, I was just observing the fact that one could get infected with malware unexpectedly.

4:30 PM

@Gao I hope they at least have fixed all the buffer overflow related bugs, if any, in the components to open a text file, read it, and display it. That is the least they should have done after the problem is revealed for years

Gaiz. .. just confirming .. total os change will/might solve the prob?

@EroSɘnnin what you need to do to completely avoid the problem: format the whole drive and install fresh OS
but you will lose the files
so back them up
and don't format the whole drive
only the OS partition
and don't install a different OS, you can use the same one over and over

If you can get a virus removal tool on the laptop in safe mode, it might be salvageable, but what Hakase said is the most straightforward method.

just format the OS partition and install there again
virus removal tools don't give you 100% guarantee like complete wipe does
they also take hella time which ain't nobody got

4:33 PM
There is specific tool to remove this virus

Gao
partition might not be able to hold the malware within it, so wipe the whole drive if you can

@Gao wat

But @Hakase how to make sure that the infection wont get in while making backup?

Gao
@EroSɘnnin That, I'm also curious.

Articles tell that the shit virus is da bomb at staying low

4:34 PM
@EroSɘnnin it's already everywhere as far as we know, so just copy over your pictured, videos, documents, passwords and whatever you want to keep from the OS partition to any other partition
ok first of all how do you know which virus that is?

Hmm

Gao
@Hakase It's possible. e.g. askubuntu.com/questions/464860/…

@Gao anything is possible, at the right circumstances

@hakase av detected it thrice and identified it. And then it auto repaired it

4:36 PM
which av?

Gao
@Hakase That's why the paranoia

wait before you break everything and get into a funny situation where you can't access internet, do you have an ethernet cable you can connect to your notebook?

Avast

ok what is the name of that virus again?

Gao
@EroSɘnnin Might want to try this: superuser.com/a/887379

4:40 PM
Kukacka @Hakase

@Gao nah it's gonna take all week to remove it completely for an inexperienced user
easier to just reinstall everything in under 3 hours

Okay, I'm sooo not used to internet this fast.
3.5 MB/s. Haven't had that since school.
I start downloading an episode. And before I can even get up, it's done.

Gao
@Hakase but if as nhahtdh said, what if the malware can spread to the USB? Ero has to make a backup still

I'm so used to just queuing them up overnight.

@Ero if you haven't already copied over your files somewhere safe like maybe an external drive, do it now. If you don't have anything external that can fit all your files, just move them to another partition and don't accidentally format it when you will be installing windows. Take note of the partition sizes so you don't mix them up.

4:45 PM
@gao that looks easily... doesnt it need to be downloaded? If i take net .. it could turn out very bad

Woah, what did I just walk into?

@Gao then he'll need to download a live cd, clean everything that was connected to the PC since that malware got in with some virus removal tool and then install windows, again
@Mysticial Ero got some hard to remove virus and we're advising on how to get rid of it

Disconnect the drive. Do a fresh install on a different drive. And selectively pull files out of the old drive.

assuming Ero is a regular user, he doesn't have more than one drive

Gao
And how to do that last step without getting infected again?

4:47 PM
I don't remember the last time I saw a virus that executed from autorun on a usb flash, so I'd say the chances are low

@Gao Only grab your personal files. Don't touch any of the system stuff.

Lol @hakase I do have. But not atm

It's harder for a virus to attach itself to a .txt or .doc files unlike .exe.

@Gao newest live CDs with virus removal tools should be able to fix that, but at the worst possible case, completely formatting everything from a simplistic live OS that cant do a lot of stuff should work. But I don't think this is the case where that would be needed

When you get a virus, the only reliable way to remove it is to wipe the entire system.

4:49 PM
that's what I'm saying

Great. Shit rebooted. Avast doing some scans on drives

but guys are afraid it could still backstab from a usb drive or something

@Hakase Disable auto-play.

of course

The wipeout part is easy. The tricky part is the backup

4:51 PM
do not forget which partition is ok to wipe and which is not
write down their capacities if you can't remember

Ideally, you don't mess with partitions.
But if you don't have another drive, I guess you don't have much of a choice.

Ughh .. I hate minecraft now

Gao
After you just stepped on a mine XD

oh btw I read on imgur (along other stupid crap) that to reliably delete some data on hard drives you allegedly need to overwrite it with random stuff multiple times. Does that even make sense? It seems like just once would do the trick.

Lol xD

Gao
4:54 PM
once or 3 times, but Gutmann method (35x) is probably overkill.

yea I don't see any logic in that

@hakase at this point, nothing makes sense to me

Gao
@Hakase Yea, don't know if that is urban legend or it's theoretically/practically possible to recover data after n overwrites.

Always have like 5 or 6 computers near you at all times. This is a life strategy.
^^ So true. Though I only have 5. (3 desktops, a laptop, and a netbook)

4:56 PM
So then .. imma wipe em out
If this goes well, I'll be back online after a few hrs
If not, i'll be sulking in the main and meta sites, editing posts since i dont have anything else to do

it's gon b fine
@Gao the Gutmann method article on wiki says magnetic drives leave traces of previously contained data, so theoretically possible
depends on the drive technology tho

Gao
Who knows? He could be wrong.

the magnetic drive?
absolutely :p

Gao
But since that method is included in Truecrypt, I suppose there exists the risk that a few overwrites won't be able to delete the data completely.

The avast boot scan is reporting too many "ZIP archive is corrupted" messages

5:05 PM
@Gao maybe because some still use those old-tech drives and it's just one all-purpose method which doesn't differentiate between them, so has to accommodate for all possibilities
@EroSɘnnin which archives
you know about them?

@ToshinouKyouko I feel asleep, so I couldn't answer sry D: (yes)

I didn't read much about that virus but there's a chance it could be infecting every .zip file on your drive so… if the first reinstall doesn't work, you might need to use a liveCD to banish the virus from your zips
hope it's not the case
fancy tea time

They probably account for military grade recovery, who knows?

@EroSɘnnin assuming you have "win32:kukacka" have you tried support.kaspersky.com/viruses/utility#salitykiller

Lol. Im trying smthn. Hopefully it might work. See ya latero

5:15 PM
@EroSɘnnin what are you gonna try?
don't break your windoze

Anyone watching Triage X?

@nhahtdh yes

@Ero toshiba's built-in recovery?

@ʞɹɐzǝɹ What do you think about the series?
I'm watching it because I'm a bit curious about the main character's past. Other than that, the series looks like it's going to be repetitive

Gao
Looks like high school of the dead to me

5:21 PM
@nhahtdh poor I dropped in before the 3rd epi
@Gao it looks
but it's not

Gao
@ʞɹɐzǝɹ Well, I would have dropped HOTD around the 3rd episode also, if not for my friend who was watching the anime with me and liked it.
It was OK, but I think it's just not worth the time.

it seems like most of the shows ppl here are watching are not worth watching lol
mostly they are current series
only a small portion of them turn out to be good
I can almost always tell if it's gonna be good or not just from the screens :p

@ʞɹɐzǝɹ :o now im the jealous one

Gao
And if it looks like it has potential, it probably doesn't. It has to shout out that it is a masterpiece to have a high chance that it will be.

Kyouko, you are the jealous one!

Gao
5:30 PM
Follow the 1 or 3 episode rule to be more sure about your judgment.

I usually know already when I'm about to watch an okay series
the "watchable" sort but not a good or recommendable sort

user image
2

Gao
The 3 episode rule... think about mami, lol

you mighta accidentally a word

5:46 PM
@Gao Lol, not like they can churn out masterpiece every single season
Though they are going the safe route too much recently

Here's what my new setup looks like with better lighting:

Let's see, Nanoha, Tokyo Tosho, Task Manager, Stack overflow, CPUs

@ton.yeung I'll shift the table out a bit.
It's one of the reasons why I went with a lightweight table instead of a heavy-duty corner table which I can't move.

6:05 PM
Thrills and spills room really is not for low end tablet or 7 years old computer

6:22 PM
man people actually do the vertical computer screen. I thought that was just a myth :P

@ton.yeung There was a price difference of $60/month between the room on the 26'th floor (which has a view of another building in front) vs. the room on the 42'nd floor which clears that building and lets you see much of the skyline.
Wasn't a hard choice.
So it's tall enough to see the skyline. But low enough that airplanes can't hit it unless they come in from a very high angle of attack.
Noting that downtown Chicago is right in the takeoff flight path of one of the major runways at the airport.

7:06 PM
@Mysticial Fancy :D

keyboard and mouse is waaay to close for me
I usually sit with my eyes about a meter away from displays

@Hakase That's easier to do for low-res monitors.

which means keyboard is… (measures) 60cm away from display

I spent a lot of time playing with the ones on display at the store to see what is the optimal viewing distance for 2560 x 1440.

so that table is comfy?
I think I'd get at least 15 more cm away
so I could see them all without having to turn my head around

7:11 PM
The table is fine.
The only thing I don't like about it is the fold gap in the middle.
But no biggie.
I'm not particularly picky with tables.
But I'm very picky with chairs.

dentist chairs are the shit
switch lamp for monitor stand and it's a-go

lol

but srsly where are those

Where to buy a dentist chair?

oh no those cost more than a fantastic pc
medical supplies vendors sell those

7:14 PM
That's what happens when you become a prosumer.
Half the stuff you get is industrial grade.

yeah…

My rent right now after utilities and stuff is around 2.5k/month.
So I estimate about 3k/month for all living expenses.

That's...a lot

If I like this job and decide to stay long-term, I'll definitely want to buy a condo somewhere. The ones I'm looking at are probably in the half-million range.
I won't be able to buy those without help from my parents.
@ton.yeung Rough estimate - I'm really cheap.
@ton.yeung Not in quicken, but some random spreadsheet.
3k is just a rough estimate. I might be overestimating the rent + utilities and under-estimating the food.
No transportation needed since it's walking distance to work.
The 3k is only necessary living expenses. I'm counting going out on the weekends and such.
@ton.yeung That's included in the rent policy. Fixed rate.
The only thing that's not included is internet/TV and electricity. The internet/TV is fixed at 50/month. Power I have no idea yet. But I'm going to estimate around 100 - 150. Which I have no idea if it's accurate.
I'll know after a month's rent and see what adjustments I need to make.
Though I don't run my computers 24/7. (except my laptop)
Either way, I'm nowhere near the point where I need to count pennies on my living expenses.
I didn't leave Google to come to Chicago for a shitty job.

7:26 PM
@ton.yeung Was the cost lower when you were in OC or higher?
Oh dang lol

A lot of Google employees have rent upwards of 3/4k+ on a salary of around 100k.
So I feel really lucky to have been able to live at home to avoid all of that.
Now I'm in Chicago with "only" 2.5k rent in a decent apartment with a view.

(sorry)

huehue

let's get some questionable pictures instead
#post

7:33 PM
hah that wasn't questionable

not at all
interesting hat
nice jacket btw
the glass roof scaffolding is detailed
my sister's coming over on weekend
we're gonna make the noisy neighbours reaaally uncomfortable
about time they learned what happens when they do stuff too loudly
I have big speakers too
all that money talk made me feel so poor :,(
but I know I'm just lazy
uhh
well, not cv but you know :p

best answer ever
@Hakase if we weren't lazy we wouldnt be programmers

uhh we totally would be

need to find that good spot for laziness tho
cant be too lazy

@Frosteeze ahaha :')

7:41 PM
play kids games loudly

What kids games?

I don't really have any kids games :p
we'll probably just watch anime on 180% volume and try to do karaoke

rofl

we weren't planning on staying at home a lot anyways
probably walk around parks, see stuff
I haven't really ever gone out into town
yea she lives with parents about 40km from the city limits

@Frosteeze I have one in work

7:45 PM
goes to school within the borders every day tho

tbh I don't like it and I'm too lazy to change it back

wait @Hakase is hanging around with his girlfriend or something? O_o

no it's my sister :p

@ToshinouKyouko That doesn't hurt your eyes? It'd be hard for me since I have to adjust to a different resolution lol

@Frosteeze oh, no mine is the same resolution, just rotated

7:47 PM
ah, ok that could work

far enough
I mean the surroundings, the people who you get to meet every day
difference is dramatic
and it's not even the sticks
maybe not in the US
some cities are big, some are small, somewhere difference is not that big throughout such distances

that's far..ish, almost same distance from me to downtown LA

can't get a decent job anywhere outside Moscow or St Petersburg
wages drop by 20-40%
coincidentally Moscow is also about 40km in radius
huh

it's a 30 mins drive so yeah i guess i wouldnt consider it out of town
idk, maybe speed limits in moscow is low

7:56 PM
she takes the train lol
and then a bus…
from the station to school
btw I wonder how far trams go
maybe
japan seems nicer from all the Makoto Shinkai anime :p
pretty far actually
I remember going the wrong way on a tram and ending up at one of the farthest metro stations
that was an adventurous weekend
I had to drag 20kg of food
soon after that a cheap food delivery service appeared and later we stopped buying large like that
weird times
well then, some sherlock and then sleep

Q: HELP: Long shot at identifying an Anime from late 90s

ConstiI need your help with finding an Anime series that I watched in kindergarten or possibly primary school. The sad bit is I hardly remember any details. Here's what I know: -I think I watched it on AXN (Asia)[???] around 2000 or 2001 -The show itself may well have been older, as I recall Slam Dunk...

8:57 PM
@MadaraUchiha I'm already trying very hard to do exactly this. But on the level of 2k pics at a time, even just spending 5 seconds per image already takes almost 3 hours to sort, and that's about what it's taking right now. No matter what, there's going to be a few that I miss. If it's 1-2% (i.e. about 3 per week) I can't really modify my methods to deal with that effectively; that seems like a problem we should implement greater moderation options in the bot to deal with.
If it's significantly more than that, this means that we have very different standards of what is/isn't appropriate. I've generally been trying to keep things at a level you could show in PG or PG-13 movies. There are a few very specific rules I have to accomplish that. For instance, no nudity, no visible underwear, etc. Beyond that, anything I'd need to think about posting on my own account for any reason gets removed.
If people still feel that the images are sometimes questionable, I'd invite them to explain why so that I can refine my methods. At the moment I'm already spending a great deal of effort to remove inappropriate ones, and I honestly can't see what's wrong with the ones that are remaining. I know I and many other users (including you) have posted significantly worse here without complaint.

@LoganM If it's 1-2% I can definitely live with that.

By every standard I know of, the images I've allowed are work-safe and appropriate. I'm basing that on everywhere I've worked (and yes, I do have this chat open at work usually), on every image board I collect images from (which generally rate as safe/questionable/explicit), and on the standards applied to movies. If these are not sufficient, I need people to tell me exactly what issues remain and I can apply that while policing the images in the future.
But if all I get is vauge complaints like "Taisho posts suggestive images" or "This is NSFW" without pointing to what images are actually a problem and why, it will get me to pull my hair out, but I'm not sure how I can change anything.

Truth be told, I haven't made any real measurements.
I haven't really strictly paid attention to what Taisho posts on a regular basis
And I don't know if any of the claims for NSFWness or suggestiveness are founded or not.
My stance is that if the bot cannot be made to not post NSFW images (with a reasonable margin of error), something is to be done about it.
If there is not problem in the matter, i.e. the bot does not posts NSFW (with a reasonable margin of error), I don't see a problem.

@MadaraUchiha If it's 1-2% I'd still like for there to be more moderation options. It shouldn't require a chat mod to edit the image; any reasonably active user should be able to remove it, either by editing, deleting, or binning.

@LoganM There are.
