@hazzey@Ethan48 @Air @GlenH7 @Russell McMahon To each of us who participated in meta.engineering.stackexchange.com/questions/277/… discussion. Is issues at hand is what is the best way to welcome new users. Let restrain ourselves from voting to close of lock question, but instead work together to help new users ease into the engineering SE. The learning curve for new user is steep as it is, let welcome
I note the effort @ChrisMueller has put into helping a new user develop the question. Let this be a example. Let this be the baseline to help new user engineering.stackexchange.com/questions/2612/…
My request to the moderators is please don't rush to put the question on hold.
There is a steady stream of new users joining engineering SE. Let try our best to keep them coming

I agree with @MahendraGunawardena that it is much more welcoming to new users if we try to help them reform their question to fit our site, rather than voting to close. Sometimes questions are so poor that it isn't possible though.
@MahendraGunawardena You should probably write your opinion up as a response to hazzey's meta question.

Q: Vote to close now or remember to check later?

hazzeyWe have users with varying opinions on using "vote-to-close". Instead of muddying other questions with thoughts on close votes, let's have a question that is solely about Vote to Close. Specific points to cover may be: Vote early? Vote late? Vote never? Comment with a vote? Try to help and t...

@ChrisMueller, I will try to find some time to initiate this process today. Only a promise to try. :-)

Sometimes it is necessary to do some work ;)

It is almost like I created that question so that this discussion could happen there instead of about any specific question.
And then crickets...

@Ethan48 I saw your answer. Thanks for the response!

@hazzey Things have been so busy lately, I haven't had much time for answering/asking questions, but that issue is important enough I figured it's worth stealing a minute for.

@Ethan48 Thanks for having done so! And yes, it's an important issue.

Can anyone confirm that the e2e.ti.com forum link that was added to the BeagleBone question is definitely the same user?
It looks like the same person, but I'm wondering if anyone has had direct communication from the author saying yes, this is my screenshot, this is me on both sites

@Air, @Ethan48, @hazzey, @GlenH7, @ChrisMueller, Thank you for all the constructive comments. The recent feedback from the community has made my position evolve, but not change. The overarching issue IMO is what the best method to efficiently on board new users? As @Air mentioned the SE has a steep learning curve to new users.
This forum attracts posters from teenager students to seasoned professional engineers, posters from across the world, most likely speaking many different languages, post from various engineering disciplines and other segments.

I have post question on meta mostly to help onboard new users. I invite the volunteer working closely with new users to post what you consider a perfect question. The hope is that we can point to the post to help new user develop a good question. There is no one size fits all solutions, so I am hoping that this post will help reduce the need to close/hold questions, as well as the constant back and forth. I am seeking your support to make the process efficient.

Q: How to ask a good question on Engineering SE and receive quality responses?

Mahendra GunawardenaWelcome to engineering stackexchange. A large community of mostly professional and academic volunteers dedicated there personal time to answer question in the forum. Therefore the community would request posters to respect volunteers time by making a sincere effort to provide sufficient informati...

*****************************************************************

Also please refrain from down voting, instead leave comment with suggestion to improve the post/response. I believe the first impression to new users is important, which encourages the users to come back and participate in the forum.
*****************************************************************

I really hope we can turn poor question into average, average question into good question and finally good question into great questions.

Finally, I believe the strength of the community will be determined by how we serve the less fortunate. Thank you for taking the time to read this chat post.

@MahendraGunawardena Moderators can make questions community wiki. I did it for your Meta question but in general you can use a custom flag to request it.

@MahendraGunawardena I made some edits to your meta question that look more drastic than they are. Mostly I moved the body of your question to the answer post, because it wasn't really much of a question, it was more an intro to the post itself. In these situations where the community asks a question so it can provide the answer, the Q&A format is still generally maintained.

@Air @TrevorArchibald, Edit look good. Thank you for your support

Q: How can I ask a good question on Engineering.SE and receive quality responses?

Mahendra Gunawardena What information should my question contain? What should I include or not include? Do I need to provide background to my question? What can I assume the people reading my question will know?

Is the intention to add to the one answer on that question to make it the default place to link? Basically, should I look to add to that answer or make another answer?
