Q: How possible a hard drive that used to have bad sectors now have none?

AybeI have a 3TB hard drive for which I recently received a SMART alert saying there's about 16 bad sectors on it : C5 Current Pending Sector Count 0x10 C6 Uncorrectable Sector Count 0x10 I ran CHKDSK d: /B which took nearly 8 hours, it fixed these bad sectors and no others were discovered. Howev...

I saw that chkdsk /r the one that goes through every freaking sector of the disk and (if i say it correct) can actually unmark sectors that the OS classed previous as Bad (not the hardware the OS)
I have always concidered to use this Chkdsk /R only when there may have been other problems causing the OS to falsely mark bad. and to Never use it when all the operation was normal
Assuming normal operations, with NO power fluxuation, and NO disk crashes and NO hard restarts , things that can cause something to be marked bad that isnt , i would want any locations classed as bad to STAY classed as bad.
But Smart does not read the OSes opinion of a drive? Smart is to read the hardwares own opinion? So how the heck would chkdsk be revoking the "bad" status at the hardware?
What I learned about how that happens must be wrong, read off some website that said it wrong
Oh duhh, the question says nothing about the (more permement) Reallocated sectors
So Sawdust (comment) got it correct.

1:21 AM
Cause with modern drives, sector reallocation happens at the hw level iirc

1:31 AM
the Psuis answer seems to have said it correct, if he would just add in the capabilties and role that chksk repair options cover.
then we can toss the whole thing for being a dupe :-)

I would hate that, that seriously sucks.
I must have the zombie apocalypse method for all my stuff, if the net doesnt exist, everything except the net should still work as before.

Blah something is causing a BSOD every time I go to sleep mode
SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000007e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
WTF
Who ships drivers like this

6:51 AM
pretty much everyone? having a computer that sleeps perfect is some kind of miracle, many people give up on it.

@Andrew: alas, I am too impatient
Fedora and ubuntu at home and centos at work here
Don't ask to ask tho, it might be common to other distros

another reason why it takes me about 2 weeks to slowly install my computers, tracing all the installs, and useing it half finished , making backups before putting on the next pigpile driver package. walking on eggshells.
When they say Re-Install to fix something, my brain just shuts off.
Here at SuperUser , they dont say re-install fixes everything :-) C@@L

Q: Is my network traffic really routed abroad if traceroute says that my traffic is routed through servers with foreign IP addresses?

RoxMy ISP is owned by a company that resides in our neighboring country. I have noticed that when I do a traceroute to a server that I know is placed in the same country as I live, I can see some hops go through some servers with IP addresses registered in my neighboring country (according to RIPE ...

I remember when traffic from california to new york , would go through canada, or even way more indirect routes going up to canada then back down for a few hops in the states. They would say that canada was doing the networking cheaper. This question suggests that we may not even know where it had gone.
It could have been servers registered in canada , and displaying canada in the data i was seeing, but may have still been in the states.

@allquixotic I was more referring to the region-specific S5 models with different LTE bands
Which feels really stupid, since I then have to try to find the Aus-specific one... which of course is marked up quite a bit
Even considering the current poor AUD => USD exchange, grey imports are cheaper -_-
And including the 10% GST

Wonder if a Geo-Locate of the servers, would work.

Q: Let user specify main tag for a question

dennis97519I observed that a web page title for questions asked here is generated by the first tag + full question. However the ordering for the tags is fixed once added, unless one removes all tag and re-add them one by one, it stays as-is. Some tags in the middle of the list might not be a very good cat...

11:41 AM
@Psycogeek Ah, old pic of yer avatar?

Yes I cant think which species I want to be this week, how about zebra?

It's time for me to get a new mouse. I have a MX518 right now and am looking at a G402 and a vertical mouse. Anyone have any other suggestions?
I'm also going to attempt wireless again

Bob
12:01 PM
@OliverSalzburg G602 is great. Very happy with it.
The side buttons are a tad excessive, though :P

@Bob Heh, yeah, just pulled it up on the Logitech website :D

Bob
@OliverSalzburg The only thing you might miss with it is a free-spinning wheel

I'd really like a mouse that doesn't look like a transformer in hybrid sleep
But I don't think that's possible

Bob
lol
@OliverSalzburg The G602 (and 502 and probably 402) are very comfortable for me :P
Though, they're right-handed only
And it depends on your hand size, of course.

Luckily, I am right-handed

Bob
12:04 PM
Also, if you prefer a claw grip, that might be a problem

I'm open for new stuff. I suffer from RSI especially in my mouse hand, so I need to try something fresh
So how do the Logitech mouse numbers work? The 502 is like the 402, but +1 charisma?

Bob
@OliverSalzburg ...I've yet to find a pattern

Heh, okay, so I'm not alone :D
I've been thinking about getting a mouse with a small touchpad instead of a wheel. It seems like a nice idea

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I don't have any issues with RSI (yet, and hopefully never...) so I can't help much there :\
You could consider one of the trackballs?
Personally, though - very happy with the 602

@Bob I hate trackballs, but was considering one, yeah
Woah
That's one of the mice I'm gonna get
That's really new territory for me

Bob
12:10 PM
@OliverSalzburg ...how many can you use at once? o.O
walk into a store and try some out!

@Bob Only one for now ;D I'll just return or stash the ones I won't use

Bob
@OliverSalzburg The text on that page makes about as much sense to me as <language you don't know at all> probably does to you :P

@Bob Yeah, I was hoping the picture would be enough
I really wouldn't mind a "Show this Amazon page on .com/.whatever" browser extension
Probably exists already
Alright, so I'm getting the CSL - TM137G vertical mouse, the 602 and the Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard. I'm very excited about that package!

Bob
Vertical mouse sounds weird o.o

Bob
12:17 PM
@OliverSalzburg What problems did you previously have with wireless mice?

@Bob Well, mostly the battery running dry at the worst moment possible (which is any moment) :D
I also faintly remember other issues, but, who knows if those were because it was wireless or just a shitty mouse. This was ~10 years ago, I guess

Bob
@OliverSalzburg 602 gets me 1-2 months on two batteries (NiMH - they actually last longer than Alkaline somehow) in endurance mode
maybe 0.5 - 1 month on performance mode
also no interference issues, though 2.4 GHz is pretty quiet here and the receiver is about 10cm from the mouse :P

@Bob Well, these days I always have charged batteries around. Back then, I didn't
I'm also going to try out those gel pad mouse pads again

Bob
@OliverSalzburg it also has nice 20% and 5% warnings in the Logitech software :P

Man, comparing Logitech mice is such a joke. One has a "G-Shift-Button" but the other has "Fusion Technology" and the next has "Delta Zero Sensor". WTF?

Bob
12:23 PM
I actually have more 18650 batteries handy than AA o.O
I blame @JourneymanGeek
@OliverSalzburg lol.

Bob
IIRC the "Delta Zero Sensor" is their fancy name for a sensor without acceleration (i.e. more precise)

I only have two!

@Bob I didn't even know what that is until now

Bob
"G-Shift" is just some kind of toggle for DPI, I think... though the software lets you assign any button to change DPI
nfi what "Fusion Technology" is

12:25 PM
also. my wireless mice have something like a year's battery life I think

@Bob Ah, I see. Being able to quickly adjust DPI is really something that's important to me

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Not sure if sarcastic :P

Not kidding. Very useful for working in Illustrator or Photoshop when you need to make something really precise

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Wait, no... G-Shift is some quick-switch for button profiles o.O
sorry
Still, DPI toggles are easy to set

I realized the non-gaming benefit of that "technology" by accident ;D

Bob
12:27 PM
@OliverSalzburg Funnily enough, I don't actually use it while gaming :P

Me neither, because I can only play casual games anymore :D
Although my Plants vs Zombies sessions can get very intense

I prefer most that there be a perfect curve for acceleration on the input device. From turtle to blasting holes in the wall. Plus a bit of added time to get used to the change.

lol
@OliverSalzburg: 'sniper mode' is nice for that ;p

Last week we ordered a couple packs of batteries off Amazon Marketplace and I just checked their order confirmation. It's a shop that seems to specialize in selling N2O capsules O__o
...and batteries
...and BB gun ammo
Oh, it's CO2
They also have N2Os though
I like how they sell packs which is "erotica themed"
Like, wat?
I'm gonna guess that the people who buy those aren't into baking a lot of pie

never going back to mices (huge trackball) In the middle of a zombie horde, have to do a 180* turn, and the mouse reached the end of the pad ARRGGGGG . for years i picked up a mouse to reposition it, never again.
@OliverSalzburg My guess is people are not using the laughing gas to make wipped cream anymore

Bob
1:05 PM
@OliverSalzburg You are now on a(nother) list.

And there is the "keyboard cleaning" Dispenser for them amazon.com/Whipping-Dispenser-Whipped-Balloon-Laughing/dp/…
which for some strange reason only known to amazon, is frequently purchaced with large baloons
They wont be needing those brain cells anymore :-)

@HackToHell 60 FPS dropping down to 30 partway in in FF37.
They're improving :P (see above)
Heh, FF38:
> autocomplete=off is no longer supported for username/password fields
> Implemented Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) API to support encrypted HTML5 video/audio playback

Automatically download Adobe Primetime Content Decryption Module (CDM) for DRM playback through EME
D:
We're replacing Adobe Flash with... ... ... Adobe CDM.
Great.

I am at FF38 and it starts at 14 fps :/
Hmm switching from integrated to nvidia gpu I get the same results as you

Bob
I wonder why

Chrome is pretty good at this, on the integrated I get 30fps
I get 50 on the dedi

@Bob ...but it does mean that there's no need for Flash to play Netflix anymore
HTML5 is the way of the future, and for it to be a complete solution, it needs to provide some secure video streaming mechanism, whether you like it or not.

Bob
@DragonLord The "secure video streaming mechanism" is a farce.

3:32 PM
Explain?
Even if it isn't really secure, it's very unlikely any major studio would accept the change without some form of DRM.
As much as I hate this, it's really necessary.

Bob
@DragonLord You can intercept the video signal on the way to the display. HDCP is already broken.

Wow.

Bob
At the end of the day, the "secure video streaming mechanism" doesn't really stop people from recording said video - oh, by the way, pirated sources also don't include said DRM anyway, and all it takes is one person with enough knowledge to take apart a monitor and insert something between the HDCP decoder and panel.

This is why Hollywood is demanding increasing stringent protection measures that take away too much control from our computers.

Bob
Even for consumers there's (questionably-legal) devices you can insert on an HDMI cable to get an unprotected output.

3:36 PM
I understand the need for some minimal level of protection, but I'd rather not lose control over equipment I own just to play back a movie for which I have a valid license to access.

Bob
@DragonLord There will always be a way for pirates to obtain and provide unprotected content. Even more, as legitimate sources become more locked down the illegitimate sources become more attractive regardless of price.

The way I see it, DRM keeps honest consumers honest, but will never stop dedicated pirates for more than a few days in practice.
6
A: How can I minimize the chances of my game getting pirated?

DragonLordHere's my position on piracy and copy protection, from the standpoint of an end user: You can't eliminate piracy. Pirates will eventually defeat any anti-piracy feature included in any game. As such, the only situation where DRM will be effective is against casual users trying to make copies ...

Bob
@DragonLord DRM makes a dishonest customer out of a formerly-honest one, too. And/or makes them an ex-customer.
See: Sony rootkit scandal

...so don't overburden us legitimate consumers, just play fair and we won't complain.
Steam is DRM done right.
Account-bound, not node-locked game licenses, for starters.

Bob
@DragonLord Make it easy and don't charge too much - that's really the best way.

3:38 PM
@Bob That's a case of DRM going too far.

Bob
As soon as you make legitimate purchases excessively difficult or expensive, you start pushing customers away.

Assuming control over the machine is never acceptable.

Bob
There will always be some who refuse to pay, yes, but trying to stop them often does more harm than good.
@DragonLord Still not completely right.
They still retain the ability to revoke your licences. That's not nice.

In what ways?

Bob
Not often used in practice, yes, but it's there.
Though the accidental cases are 'often' dealt with fairly by their support, that can take a very long time.

3:41 PM
I think the issue here is suspicious behavior detection.
The system monitors for signs of fraud and other abuse and sometimes turns up false positives.
Kill switches aren't new.

Bob
@DragonLord Not new, but that doesn't make them ideal. Of course, we don't live in a perfect world either.

Google has had to use its kill switch, but only to remove malware on Google Play.
Nonetheless, it is a potential point of abuse, and a rogue Valve employee can theoretically use it to arbitrarily revoke licenses without valid cause.
We agree it's not ideal, but abuse scenarios can and do come up once in a while.
It goes both ways, and Valve has done the right thing for the most part, by creating a consumer-friendly digital content distribution platform.
Ultimately, this is a matter of trust.

Bob
@DragonLord Oh, the platform is nice. But the support is terrible.
Steam support is largely scripted responses.

That's caused by cutting support costs, a very common mistake among big businesses today.
Customer support is extremely expensive compared to other costs associated with doing business.
Well, have to go soon.

Q: Rewiring GPU with RAM?

DominykasSo what I want to do is to solder the copper wire as shown in my scheme using zinc-lead-tin alloy, provided that I will remove the VRAM (connected to the RAM) so I could replace it with the wire. I want to do this because I want to use the 4GB DDR3 RAM as VRAM for my DDR3 NVidia GeForce 250. N...

0_0

Actually, I have soldered RAM onto a videocard.
XT era though. With places already marked on the card.
But these days things are quite different.
@JourneymanGeek To bad he did not ask if he could just solder the RAM onto the board. That would have been a trivial answer: "Solder on: Yup, no problem"
Using it would be a different question :)

No easter eggs today

11:49 PM
Hi, I know this is not an efficient practice, but is there a way to restart a node.js file from within the node code itself?
I basically want to "reload" the node code from within the code itself.
