@Caleb - didn't even recognize you! But a trim, rather than a shave? ;)

@Davïd Acttually the beard is longer than ever (hasn't been cut since the last mug shot); the new image is more of an artist's rendition (drawn in sharpie on my office desk by a kid in our church).

@Caleb Brilliant! I'm fascinated by the (effective) drop-shadow in the drawing. Special Sharpie effect?

@Davïd My desk is clear glass whith a white substrate. The shadow is because of the thickness of the glass and the angle of the camera.

@Caleb Wonderful effect for a delightful drawing. Odd, then, that it doesn't appear to be quite consistent - some of the lighter cyan lines, or the mountains, don't seem to show it. On closer inspection, it's just very faint.

@Davïd That's a function of the fact that the shadows are not strictly shade, they are tinted. The ink is semi-opaque and the shadows are actually the color of the line. The black, dark blue, brown, etc. make very distinct shadows while yellow is almost impossible to see and cyan is pletty faint.

I'm not a fan of clutter in the way of using my computer, and as much as I love typography I'm not a fan of paper in general. I've used glass desktops for years and years. Besides being easy to clean and nice to work on, they are also great for doodling on. Rather than scrap-paper I just keep some markers around. Dry-erase wipes right off and is great for very ephemeral notes, but sharpie is more fun and has to be wiped off with glass cleaner (or ever easier, rubbing alcohol or a wet-wipe).
Mostly my desk is covered in phone numbers, database table layouts, flowcharts, to-do notes, wireframes, language reminders, etc. At some point the kids decided it was a kick in the pants to decorate my desk on Sundays, so the rule is that if I've left it wiped it off (which I usually do every couple days anyway or when switching projects) they are allowed to doodle as they please each week.
Mostly it's just scribbles and poking fun at me in assorted languages, but there are some budding artists around too and the last few weeks have turned up some awesome illustrations. And so far nobody has taken sharpie to anything else in my office, so all is well. And who wouldn't want desk art that makes fun of one's facial decoration?
That was a couple weeks back.

@Davïd I'm using ReText on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit.
^^^ What should I do so that ReText show the text correctly?
