Ah. Well, Lubuntu will help with the speed. If it's boot time/application launch, give her an SSD. That'll help a ton.

As for the email, try Thunderbird. It's pretty darn straightforward. That, or Geary.

It's actually fairly elaborate (the brains-to-chat connector).

It's a Qt app with an embedded QWebView that injects some JavaScript into the chat page.
