@BESW Why are the halves kept in separate places, and what terror will be unleashed if they are ever reunited?

@Adeptus well the other thing is that... theoretically... we have discovered Charles's brain in a brass-and-wood personality sphere. So if his brain is in there, and theoretically in two separate museums, what's going on exactly?

@doppelgreener The museum pieces are someone else's... or fakes... or clones... or the result of some time travel paradox... or...

Evil time-travelling alternate dimension clone impostor!

I like this theory.
running with it... Rimmer / Ace Rimmer, Jessie / some kind of nega-Jessie, Babbage / that evil guy whose brain is in the museums.

Maybe it's the brain of some powerful undead telepath that Babbage and Lovelace defeated.
(Don't let it anywhere near the crystal skull!)

12:22 AM
I like this one too!

12:48 AM
[frowns] The stop-them-using-their-guns question is getting close votes as primarily opinion based... the question seems fine, but it's attracting a lot of varied answers.
It's definitely something that can be answered from experience, but there are just a lot of different suitable answers.
but we've accepted questions like this in the past.
[for now, takes no action at all]

@doppelgreener I VTCed, because with no system it's looking for any and every idea of why a gun wouldn't work/wouldn't be used/ wouldn't be useful.

1:09 AM
@Miniman right. in the real world, and in the context of a fight in an RPG.

@doppelgreener Yeah, in hindsight, too broad might have been more appropriate.

1:39 AM
Omg...I am having so much fun planning my run of HotDQ. Now I just have to figure out how to plan for my players ignoring all of my plot hooks

@DavidWilkins I gave my players a bunch of options that I knew they wouldn't take.
"Obviously you can stay here and help build this road if you want."

I wish my players were that predictable. I already have a plan for the first time the archer shoots a butterfly...
I have been toying with the idea of my Silver dragon being in halfling form to greet the group
Not unlike what Chris Perkins did in the Acquisitions Incorporated Tyranny of Dragons games
2 cr 3 critters actually get a higher cr than 1 cr 6, right?
Where are the rules for calculating encounter CR?

2:05 AM
@Miniman Rule One of Design Work applies to GMing too: "Never show them an option you wouldn't be happy if they took."

@DavidWilkins DMG. Can't be more specific than that right now, although you'd probably find them more easily in DM Basic Rules.
@BESW I quite like a Non-Standard Game Over here and there.

It's eluding me
Oohp...found it

Thanks though @BESW

Morning!

4:07 AM
@Magician Nope. It isn't.

@Adeptus You've seen through my ruse! //vanishes in a cloud of pastries//

[Lex Luthor appears with a handcart]

mmm... pastries...

[pokes color jitter with a stick] Why have you forsaken me?

ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
Since we're having a meme-off.

4:34 AM
@BESW you have it tuned to something other than pressure

are table war stories appropriate here? I had a very strange pickup game today at my F L G S

@jrodman sure, why not! our site doesn't deal in wargaming systems like Warhammer, but goodness knows the chat doesn't spend much time on topic.

@doppelgreener How dare you.

4:53 AM
@Miniman not very boldly at all, really :)

5:48 AM
Hello!

6:04 AM
That awkward moment when you realise one of your old answers contained something factually incorrect...

@Miniman That's how I got my Disciplined badge! :D

@doppelgreener Contained, not consisted of. An edit was sufficient in this case. (That aside, I already have the Disciplined badge. The one I can't get is Peer Pressure.)

@Miniman [sees comment about dual wielding net and trident, sees edit removing suggestion about duel wielding net and trident] I understand now :)

@doppelgreener The worrying part is that I should've known it was wrong at the time, I must have just spaced out or something.

@BESW Oh! Oh! Hey! I think I witnessed the mycelial network in action in my parent's lawn yesterday while I was weeding!
The earth was soft and moist from all the rain the past few days, so it was great weeding conditions. We could pull most weeds out without tools. There was one distinct kind of weed which I could pull out at the beginning like that - a gentle pull near the base and the entire root system would come out with it.
I think I might have snapped one or two by accident from pulling too hard. Then things started to change.
Every single one of those in the garden could no longer be pulled like that. Even the gentlest pull, and the stem would snap off very cleanly at the root. For every single one, there was about an inch of white, below-the-ground stem, and a clean sever with a bit of a dome-shaped indent in the base.
When I was trying to dig up the roots of the weed, half the stems would just fall right off. If I was lucky, I could still figure out which root actually belonged to that plant.
... I eventually just gave up completely and left them all there to attempt some other day. :P
For those unaware of what I'm talking about: the mycelial network is the subterranean fungal network present in natural locations, also known as the Wood Wide Web. It's thought that plants connect to the network through their roots, then use it like one giant neural network to communicate with plants in their vicinity, share nutrients, and do other things - including send out alarm signals like "help! something's trying to eat me! put up your defenses!"
It's been observed in some types plants, for instance, where if one individual gets eaten, all its neighbours in the vicinity - possibly planted metres away - will appear to wither, so as to look unattractive to whoever might be considering eating them. They'll look fine again later.
So, yeah, that was pretty cool.

6:39 AM
... what's lisardggY's chat name again? I can't bring him up in the ping autocomplete. Has he simply not been in here in a while?

Q: How do I introduce Paranoia to a Junior High School Pathfinder RPG club?

ErisinMy school started an RPG club around January this year, and it has been very fun. We learned Pathfinder, and rules have been learned, adventures have been taken, etc. As me and my friends are all new to tabletop rpgs we have been ignoring the complicated rules. Everyone is having a great time pla...

@Magician Q: How do I introduce Paranoia? A: Make them doubt their sanity

7:20 AM
by war story i meant -- today i played in a D&D 5e game (first time) where the game master kept trying to ignore what all the players were doing and move to the next boxed text
that's basically the whole situation in a nutshell

@doppelgreener His work station moved so he has to look busier.

@BESW oh right.
@jrodman oh. yes, you can share that too.
venting can be helpful! (i'd just advise making a habit of doing it regularly :P)

Excessive venting may be re-routed to the Not A Bar.

8:26 AM
@doppelgreener: that's pretty much it; though the part where we were very slow and elaborately told descriptions of people we hadn't met yet was sort of surreal

@jrodman That sounds like a particularly trippy session of A Penny For My Thoughts.

the tell was that this was session 2 of the adventure
no one from session 1 was left ,but we were to pick up where they had left off
@besw
err
@besw I'm trying to figure out what that is
the emily short game?
oh wait, she wrote about it

i found my way there eventually
but thanks!
i've never played something that freeform, but maybe i should try it

I've only played it once, and I feel like I didn't really get it until it was underway.
It's only freeform in that events aren't determined by a randomiser: in practice, its rules form a very rigid structure around the play.
It's actually kinda reminiscent of a super-immersive iteration of Microscope.
@Magician At first I read this as "And then he doesn't exist."

9:03 AM
Tonight's dinner is rather simple: potatoes, onions, and carrots baked alongside skillet corn bread, with spicy lemon sesame sauce to drizzle on the veggies and jam for the corn bread.

Sounds good.

@lisardggY Hail!

@lisardggY HAIL

Rain, actually.

@BESW And I thought I had problems with sweating too much.

We've been having a surprising amount of hail here recently.

Pathfinder: In stat blocks of monsters I often read stuff like "... must make a DC 12 Fortitude save ... The save DC is Charisma-based" What is the relevance here whether it's "charisma-based" or something else? What are the consequences for the attacker / the defendant?

nothing
but if the monster gets a charisma buff/debuff
then it changes the save DC

oh, there's already a question about this... sorry rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/35769/…

yep
what they said

ah yes. makes sense, thanks Tim.

np
I had the same question when I saw that :D

2:42 PM
rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/57188/… flagged as unclear since there is a raw tag but no system tag

yep. I CV'd with my comment
now has a system tag. CVs can now be retracted

I can't retract my flag, but if it goes to "unhelpful" I don't care

@DavidWilkins not sure how close flags are handled if there is an edit to fix it. TBH they should be marked helpful when the post gets removed from the CV queue
they may end up disputed though

Looks like my flag was marked "helpful" so no worries

cool

2:55 PM
One of these days I might have enough rep to mess with CVs :P

you'll get there sooner than you think
keep answering questions

Well, unlike some (and I 'm not saying they are wrong) I'm not in a hurry to get there. I'm sure it will happen at some point, simply because I like this community and contributing to it

grr having trouble finding a bit in the 5e basic rules. I remember a bit where it talks about rolling dice only when there is a threat of failure...but I could be projecting
found it

It seems a comment of mine was removed. Is it possible to get an explanation? It was perfectly harmless, and specifically a comment as it didn't provide an actual answer.
The comment was on this question

Q: How is the number of spells limited in a spellbook?

Alexis WilkePrevious versions had rules about the total number of spell that a spellbook could include calculated using the level of the spell and number of pages in the book. 5e mentions that a spellbook has 100 pages, but I did not find anything (so far) that says how many pages (if more than 1) a spell t...

@William'MindWorX'Mariager you can try meta, but most likely either someone flagged it or our mods just happened by and removed it. They are pretty aggressive about comment removal.
(that's not a bad thing, extraneous comments make it harder to find the actual answers)

Alright then. Seems a bit discouraging of comments though.

@William'MindWorX'Mariager comments are intended to be ephemeral and are subject to deletion for any number of reasons (the original comment implementation didn't even include a mod visible record or the ability to undelete them). They are (by design) second or even third class citizens
basically, comments aren't designed to be permanent. they were only implemented after much begging, and were implemented basically to quickly clarify as question or answer and then thrown away

Yeah, I get that. Just seemed a bit odd that mine was the one to be singled out. :P Confused me a bit.
I try to stay within the rules, and a deletion is usually an indication that I was doing something I shouldn't. :)

heh, nah, comment deletion is just normal site cleanup, no judgement
(and you're by no means singled out re: comment deletion, they delete everyone's)
(and in turn, if you see a comment that's old and really isn't adding anything, flag it...you can get badgers for it)
(and sometimes, hats for deleting your own old comments)

4:36 PM
Ohh, badgers!

4:54 PM
Accidentally let a player in my Pathfinder game use Reach Spell as if it were Widen Spell
Fortunately it was supposed to be an easy encounter and it didn't throw the game too much off balance, but whoopsie anyway

@DavidReeve oops. Is it the kind of thing where you need to offer the guy a chance to redo his character? or is it simple to correct in play?

I expect a lot of character redoing when I have my first GURPS session.

I don't think I'm going to offer him the chance to repick Reach Spell or anything
He's had it for a while, and it's really good, but it can't widen cones

I don't recall it being this much work getting into 3.0 back when I first decided I wanted to be a DM/GM. :P

4:57 PM
reasonable

Maybe though because he bought the pizza

lol

Also I have an alignment issue going on with one player

Yay alignment.
What is the issue?

His character is a Chaotic Neutral Rogue but he goes out of his way to kill any helpless creature he comes across
Should I drop his alignment to CE?

5:01 PM
yes

Why does his character do it?

Depends. Are the helpless creatures evil? :P

Sometimes, sometimes not

@DavidReeve ask him about it. Don't force an alignment change on a player, that should be an event, not a consequence
understand why he's doing what he's doing. It could well be that he has a point
(and said event should be crafted with the player and be based on his desires)

In one case they were fighting hobgoblins and one was still alive after combat, so he slit its throat

5:03 PM
@DavidReeve When he did it did he say why he did it?

I know why the player does it
Because I told him about coup de grace

I wouldn't view that as particularly evil. He stops it from running back and calling reinforcements.

Yeah, I'm not sure that battle field summary execution is evil exactly. It's not good...but if there aren't other great opportunities available...
(it's on the chaotic end of the law spectrum tho)

Ok, I'll talk with him about it

Something like a goblin or another creature that terrorizes others is understandable and I wouldn't recommend an alignment change. That sounds like a Chaotic Neutral action If he starts going around killing innocent things, or things that only attack when attacked or you are in their territory, then I would bring it up with him.

5:07 PM
alignment is so subjective

Exactly.
@waxeagle For example you said it isn't a good action. However I would consider killing the hobgoblin within Chaotic Good alignment. Killing for the greater good so it won't kill someone else ect.
Just realized out of Context that sentence would sound REALLY bad. Then again we also frequently refer to our characters as murderhobos...

He used to be chaotic good
Then he robbed a group of starving prisoners of their remaining possessions

@waxeagle hola

But it was worth it for that 3 cp

@JoshuaAslanSmith heya

5:18 PM
In Pathfinder is it possible to create a "Ring of Undetectable Alignment"? (spell: d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/u/undetectable-alignment ) and would it really cost just 2000GP?

@JoshuaAslanSmith I'm pondering cancelling this week, to give another week for side sessions, thoughts?

@waxeagle thats fine since sam probably wont make it
@waxeagle thoughts and opinions on my email? (if youve had the chance to read it).

@JoshuaAslanSmith that's what I was thinking. I had already been kicking that around

@DavidReeve - Alignment shouldn't change for one act. It's a consistent pattern that dictates an alignment change.

@mawimawi Assuming your creator is a Bard with Forge Ring, then it would cost them only 500 gp to create a Ring of Undetectable Alignment
Continuous effect on a level 1 Bard spell, so 1 x 1 x 2,000 for base price

5:23 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith I have, and very interested, especially in 1-3. It should make for two solid scenes (sam and I did 2 scenes in about an hour the other night). With 6, if you have a goal in mind for a side quest that's awesome, else I'll write a quick one based on your faction.

Divide it in half because it's an effect measured in 24 hour increments, in half again to get the crafting price

@DavidReeve and this would make the alignment undetectable at all times?

@waxeagle no specific goal, maybe a hunt of a dangerous creature (either normally predatory and its been attack caravans, or maybe a creature that normally stays away from humans (like wolves) but has gotten sick or "magic" or something and its attacking people

Only while wearing the ring, and it could be overcome by higher level spells

maybe I get to harvest some poisons for my ongoing poisoner kit training

5:27 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith hmmm yes, let me investigate if any of the poison giving critters can be taken by a PC alone

@JohnP It's not just one act
He's killed a bunch of helpless enemies, though they have generally been evil

@DavidReeve have there been good alternatives available for doing something other than killing them?
(that's one of the things I struggle with...what exactly do you do with the critters you take alive)

@waxeagle yeah the DMG should have that, I think the giant snake which has a lowish CR is on the list one sec Ill consult my dmg (I assume you don't have yours at work)

@JoshuaAslanSmith yeah, not something I keep on my desk here :)
(and I haven't been bad yet)

@waxeagle he killed a bugbear that dropped its weapons and surrendered, so he could have taken them alive instead of murdering them
That's the most "evil" example I can think of though. Most other times it's been against targets that are sleeping/unconscious
Something just feels not good when his first reaction to something falling helpless is to run across the battlefield and stab it to death

5:36 PM
Does it bother anyone but you?

Haven't asked
The party's Oracle was a bit dismayed by it but didn't talk much about it

Definitely sounds like an out of game convo to have, find a time out of game time to have a chat about it.

hahahahahaha
purple worm poison
hahahahaha
I know that is outside the CR for me to take on (or the party

heh :) I mean we could try it heheheh
(though I'd roll up a new character first :P)

@waxeagle Cant take a weveryn by myself either (but the party could)
looks like the only one I could solo is a "giant poisonous snake" which Im not sure is an actual listing as there are giant constrictor snakes and normal poisonous snakes, I remember one from the playtest/starter kit though
@waxeagle nvm it is in the MM, just not in the PHB for me to look at here at work

5:48 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith ok, I'll see about designing a short adventure around that.

@waxeagle giant poisonous snake is cr 1/4 I think
MM page 327
for ease of finding it when you get a chance to work on it
During downtime between adventures, a character
can use the crafting rules in the Player's Handbook to
create basic poison if the character has proficiency with
a poisoner's kit At your discretion, the character can
craft other kinds of poison. Not all poison ingredients
are available for purchase, and tracking down certain
ingredients might form the basis of an entire adventure.
A character can instead attempt to harvest poison
from a poisonous creature, such as a snake, wyvern, or
carrion crawler. The creature must be incapacitated or
So I think if I harvest it then I have "Serpent Venom" the poison and can use it, but I cant craft basic or any interesting poisons till I get proficiency with the poisoner's kit I believe

@JoshuaAslanSmith Seems like you'd have the raw ingredients for the poison (though that one may be basic enough that it could be used straight)
I'll ponder on that one

6:05 PM
@waxeagle yeah I can understand either way
@waxeagle any of the other poisons that arent harvest-able venom should of course require a kit

right

we can probably use the basic poison as a model for other injury based poisons (Ie you must hit with a slashing or peircing weapon to apply the poison) whatever you decide.

Poison, Basic. You can use the poison in this vial
to coat one slashing or piercing weapon or up to three
pieces o f ammunition. Applying the poison takes
an action. A creature hit by the poisoned w eapon or
ammunition must make a DC 10 Constitution saving
throw or take 1d4 poison damage. Once applied, the
poison retains potency for 1 minute before drying.

Q: Elves "demonic" face in Tolkien's universe

KritnerI had forgotten about the way elves faces get "demony" looking in times of anger/frustration from the LOTR movies, but I was reminded when playing through Shadow of Mordor - it seems like the "Wraith" version of the Gravewalker experiences the same thing as the movies did. Where does this fit in...

Q: Is there any way to just get rid of the RPG profile without the others?

KelvinI'm really frustrated, and a bit stuck. At the end of the day, posting on the RPG stack only ends up in aggravation. Can anyone tell me how to delete just the RPG profile without effecting the Stack Overflow or any of the other profiles?

9:28 PM
@waxeagle Isn't that the guy who yelled at a bunch of us because of a question he asked not being on topic or something?

honestly not sure.

@William'MindWorX'Mariager I periodically go through a few pages of my old comments to see what can be deleted (most comments that really fit into the site's guidelines do eventually get to where they should be deleted, and self-policing is appreciated), and whenever I see a comment or thread that could go away without losing anything, I flag it.

This is the only SE site I know of that does this.

Most comment deletions work that way: someone wandering through the site notices a comment that's served its purpose, and they flag it for a mod's attention. The idea is that the Stack should be a place where it's easy to find questions and answers without a lot of noise.

But I think it's a good idea.

9:33 PM
And yeah, a lot of SE sites don't follow the comment guidelines as closely.
For some, it's because the comments are too out of control for effective moderation.
They've just given up.
For others, the community has appropriated comments for other purposes so the guidelines are no longer as useful.

@BESW lol

My players recently went through an event that wiped 1/3 of the entire worlds population. They returned to the human capital to find the gates were closed, something they have only heard of in stories from the great wars. They're granted entry to the city on grounds of their previously heroic deeds. They see the city is in a very poor state and see a Gnomish Airship that has crashed into one of the major towers.
Now I'm trying to make up some mystery in this city.

What kind of mystery? Political thriller, murder mystery, monster rampage...?

9:41 PM
Specifically, they're having a hard time getting answers from anyone. One of the people they used to interact with has been banished for asking questions and the other people they know are reluctant to help.
My thoughts have been something along the lines of one or more of the human royalty has died and this is causing some kind of power surge happening politically.
The hook would probably be something like the local thieves guild contacting them and letting them know what is going on.
Maybe they have to make a decision who to help. The remainder of the royalty or some new power.
@BESW Political thriller perhaps?
At the moment they're out of town. They have just helped establish a new village/town for some outsiders.
They will be returning to the human capitol soon.
Is it capitol or capital?

capital

Capitol is super specific (US Capitol building or a stat legislature building). TIL: grammarist.com/usage/capitol-capital

I'd certainly stay away from murder mystery as the primary plot. I've read those are incredibly hard to pull off in a game.

9:48 PM
Yeah, the death should just be attributed to the recent event.
I'm sort of hoping to make some mystery mainly as to what is going on. It was kinda underlined that the city was in trouble, so they definitely know something is up.
A wall of silence is an effective way of creating mystery, but also pretty boring as a story.
Sort of related, I can really recommend playing a game of Dawn of Worlds with your players. My players really have a deep understanding of the politics in the world. When dealing with the outsides, of human descent, they know exactly how each faction would react to having a new village established.
They knew they could pull favor with the Gnome/Dragonborn alliance, but it'd come at a price. They knew they shouldn't ask the Elves/Centaur alliance, as their story with the humans weren't always the best.
They have a good feeling of where everything is, and a sense of being part of the world. It's really great. Beats any map and description I could ever give of a world.
They recently planned a faster route to take based on their historical knowledge of who lived in a mountain range.
It was the remains of the once great Giant empire. Still on good standing with the humans and good races, but reluctant to provide assistance.
It's a much more immersive story than I've previously experienced.

10:11 PM
It does provide a more enjoyable way to get your players to know the background of the world than "here read this 10 pages of stuff I wrote about it"

Yeah, it really does. And the players feel more connected since they helped shape the world.
I'll have to ponder my political intrigue/mystery a bit. G'night!
