Believe it or not, @python, those things go hand in hand. Without helping people, we won't be awesome. Without maintaining standards, the site will fall apart, and we won't be very helpful. I get your point, you would like to see us lax up a bit, but we do have to maintain some level of quality. As for our primary concern, since these things work together, one doesn't work without the other. They are both of concern, and are both getting attention atm. — J. Musser 1 min ago

Q: I asked and answered a question on how to do something and it was said to be off topic?

remydibIt said that I didn't follow the help center but not what I violated. I answered with how I solved it so others could come up with better solutions.

A: I asked and answered a question on how to do something and it was said to be off topic?

MoosemanYour question was off-topic because it wasn't looking for a hack solution. Buying a cable is not a hack.

@Mooseman already did.

@J.Musser Now you should be able to cast a delete vote on it

....while waiting for Meta-Man to announce my question, I'll just say that the purpose is so that we have something to point people to when they post a "how do I triple boot Ubuntu" question
....I've noticed a very large number of new users with that misunderstanding, so I think that this post might get some use

Q: Let's make this clear: this site is **not** the same as Lifehacker

ShokhetLifehacker is a cool website -- you can find how-to articles on just about anything from kitchen to computing. I've used it a bunch of times to help me figure out how to do several things with my computer, for example. However, even though our site has a similar name, our scope is NOT the same a...

@MacGyver There you go, @MacGyver
(there's another chat where Meta questions are posted from a "Meta-Man" account; I just got a little lost)

A: Let's make this clear: this site is **not** the same as Lifehacker

MoosemanI agree with this very much. However, I don't think that something is off-topic just because it is on-topic on another SE site, inclusive of computer issues. For example, if I'm looking for a hack to keep a child from deleting my files, it could be on-topic at either of the following: Super Us...

....I meant that footnote as just a "Hey, if you're disappointed that your question couldn't be handled here, you can ask it over hereShokhet 1 min ago
....also, I didn't intend the list to be exhaustive
@Shokhet @Mooseman FTR, I was writing that comment as you were writing yours....in any event, it still makes sense where it is (I think)

6:40 PM
@Shokhet Still working on it

Q: How do we move questions away from endpoint-based closure? (Question closing ipso facto)

MoosemanWe're starting to get an idea of what's on-topic. To summarize: Non-standard solutions to physical problems** that use common objects. Additionally, there is a general understanding that questions may not be psychological or medical. Of the 37 non-duplicate closed questions, some are clear...

@Mooseman :P

@Shokhet But how's the post? ;)

@Mooseman Reading it. I misunderstood what you were driving at; I don't think "ipso facto" means much in this context
....the phrase means "by the fact itself"
Sorry :(

Feel free to edit

Lemme read it first :P
@Mooseman When you say "endpoint based," you mean "based on the answers," right?

@Shokhet Exactly

7:46 PM
@Mooseman Got it.
@Mooseman, do you think your question is a duplicate of meta.lifehacks.stackexchange.com/q/1124/59?

@Shokhet It's similar, but I'd consider that one obsolete.

@Mooseman Obsolete? In what way?

@Shokhet It's based on older principles.

@Mooseman Like, older principles of what is and isn't on-topic/a lifehack?

@Shokhet Exactly.

7:51 PM
@Mooseman Okay.
I have to run; I'll be back later.
