I wasn't getting the answers I was looking for on this question, so I restructured it to explain what I'm looking for: judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/9903/…
unfortunately, this invalidates a lot of the answers
is this acceptable?
I won't be sitting in the chat room, but answer away. I'll recheck in periodically to see if the question has been answered

@Menachem I think that what you did, including commenting on all existing answers to alert them to the change, is fine. Other options include posting a new question and retaining your original question with strikethroughs, so people can understand what the original answers were getting at.

Q: Design for Judaism.SE

Isaac MosesI occasionally search for "Judaism" across all SE chat sites, and I just discovered this comment from Jin Yang, SE's resident designer: yeah i'm designing the music and judaism sites now i know 0 about either one.. This is a bit of a surprise to me. I didn't realize that we were anywh...

@StackExchange favorites icon should be a six-pointed star! :)

@TalFishman Ein kol chadash, my man: meta.judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/8/…
By all means, put that in as an answer.

@IsaacMoses yad up, yad down would also be cool
(for votes)

@TalFishman You mean like those pointy fingers you find in the gemara?

I mean like the pointy finger used for Torah reading

8:17 PM
@TalFishman I think the image would be similar.

A yad (), literally, "hand," is a Jewish ritual pointer, used to point to the text during the Torah reading from the parchment Torah scrolls. It is intended to prevent anyone from touching the parchment, which is considered sacred. The Vellum Parchment does not absorb ink so touching the scroll with fingers will damage the lettering. While not required when chanting from the Torah, it is used frequently. A yad can be made of any number of materials, though silver is most common. The yad is often shaped like a long rod, with a small hand and an index finger pointing from it. ...

... and it doesn't sound like a bad idea

@IsaacMoses @WAF mentioned it in the meta post you linked

8:40 PM
@Dori, is launching J.SE being discussed around the office?

It's being discussed—it's not going to be immediate, and I've already said that it shouldn't happen until after the high holy days.
(laughing because I was just googling for yad images!)

@Dori Even considering interaction with the Holidays is sooner than I expected. Do y'all really think that our stats are close enough to the right place already?
@Dori ... thanks for putting that scheduling consideration on the table!
@Dori I was trying to find a picture of the little pointy finger that you find in some Hebrew books (maybe not the Talmud itself, after all), but I haven't found one yet.

Site stats are here and here
I think that the site looks very strong—sure, the visits per day could be higher, but the quantity of questions is good and the question quality is top notch.
It's a niche site, and it'll always be a niche site. But as niche sites go, it's (imo) very healthy.

@Dori Can't disagree with you there, Baruch Hashem.
We've had a sudden shift from plateau to growth in the past few weeks, it seems largely due to search traffic. I'm not sure why. Perhaps our PageRank got bumped up recently?
@Tal, please do contribute your ideas in the meta post. It's brainstorming, so the more ideas, the better.

If you sort that last link by date, note that the site is (by far) the newest one even being considered for graduation. Sure, having lots of imported questions helps on some (not all) of the metrics, but there are other sites that had that help as well.

8:53 PM
@Everyone else: You, too!

@IsaacMoses Many of SE's sites have had a positive jump lately (huzzah!). It's possible that there's an end of the summer, back to school aspect to it.

@Dori Why not, e.g. Code Review, SF&F, or Graphic Design?
@Dori Is it possible that the entire network had a bump in PageRank? Did Google do a reshuffling recently?

I think we've always had great page rank
@IsaacMoses CR: not enough high rep users.
SF&F - their traffic has just started to pick up enough to consider them, and I think they're also on Jin's list
Graphic Design: not enough high rep users.

I see. So we're benefiting from the head start that developing a community in SE1.0 gives us.

You, and SharePoint, and Electronics, etc.

9:08 PM
Well, this is all very exciting. I can't wait to hear more from Jin and see what he comes up with. Thanks for stopping by, @Dori. TTYL

Any time you need my input, just drop my name into chat and I'll pop in if I'm around.

@Dori :) Much like I may if anyone says "Judaism"! Thanks.

:-D

9:33 PM
@Isaac Hmmm... Okay, I guess I was misunderstanding then. Maybe we should have the "mi.yodeya" graphic be a link to judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/9/what-does-mi-yodeya-mean
its a real pity that ".se" is taken by Sweden. No that top-level domains are for sale, that would be awesome to have. Expensive though.

@HodofHod Something like that could make sense. An explanation is already in the FAQ and could possibly be made more prominent in there.
@HodofHod Yeah, if the URL actually were judaism.se , it would be hard to come up with something easier than that.

@Dori any thoughts on buying out swedens top-level domain name - ".se"? ;-)

Sadly, no one has offered SE that kind of investment!

@HodofHod The GDP of Sweden is only about $400B. With a little more venture capital, SE could just buy the country.

9:52 PM
@IsaacMoses $400B? Pocket change!
@Dori well, they should! its worth it!

@HodofHod If only the Jews did control the banks… (just joking, honest, please, really, just joking!)

@Dori But we do! (also just joking!)

@HodofHod If we do, could someone let my mortgage company know? ;-)

@Dori Seriously, though, the network could seriously benefit from having its own TLD. I don't know how much those'll run.

@IsaacMoses We are not anywhere near that size (sadly). I think there's only a single private company that does have its own TLD.

10:04 PM
Why not just register domains using marcaria.com/register/domain/…

@IsaacMoses pretty sure that they said they were going to sell for $185,000

I'm getting quoted around $36/domain/year, which is not much more than .com

People are used to .com—anything else is near-useless.

@Dori Well stackexchange.com is great. Unfortunately, we don't get one of those. Any timeline on getting a real domain btw?

@Dori True enough, I suppose.

10:10 PM
@yydl The emphasis from on high right now is on branding stackexchange.com, so sites officially moving to other domains is currently looked upon unfavorably. Which has displeased askdifferent.com, but what can you do…

[finished backreading] Wow. And I thought you were a mute, Dori. ;-)
@TalFishman Just the part that looks like a hand, or the whole thing (including the long part one holds)? IMHO the former looks like a hand, and wouldn't obviously be a sefer-Tora hand; and the latter is not the best shape for an arrow.
i.imgur.com/T946f.png to you all. Bye.

10:42 PM
@msh210th talk about a great juxtaposition! A gut shabbos to all!

@Dori If we can re-adopt mi.yodeya and be looked upon unfavorably, I would not be displeased.

@IsaacMoses Well, the same people make both decisions, so I'd classify that as highly unlikely.

11:12 PM
@Dori Why is askdifferent displeased? They would prefer to only be askdifferent, and not have apple.SE as their primary domain? Or is SE planning to de-associate from the askdifferent name?
... note that I'd be perfectly happy to retain j.se as the primary URL, I'd just like to have m.y be the name in the graphics, like askdifferent and seasonedadvice have.

@IsaacMoses Right now, if you go to askdifferent.com, you're redirected to apple.se. They don't want that; they want it the other way around.
@IsaacMoses That is a different separate issue.

@Dori Great.
OK. Really gotta go now. Shabbat Shalom.

ttyl
