@JimG. I doubt that the fact that such evil could exist within the hearts of men is much of a surprise to anyone who reads their bible and believes it. Much less would it be a surprise to anyone who has followed the news more recently regarding the actions of various Islamist militants - this is by no means the worst example of human depravity even in the last month.

@JimG. re what would Jesus say: biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+13%3A1-5&version=NIV - in response to hearing of an atrocity (Pilate mingling the blood of some Galileans with their sacrifces) and a disaster (the tower of Siloam falling and killing 18), his response (reminiscent of the Lord's non-answers to Job) was not to explain the 'whys', but to address the primary importance of where his listeners stood in relation to God

(as sinners in urgent need of repenting and receiving the grace of God)
