00:00 - 08:0008:00 - 00:00

12:00 AM
well it's a dev preview - not the final product. I assure you they'll want your money later.
although as a student, you can get Visual Studio Pro for free, and the Express version is always free. and Windows 8 will surely be discounted for students.

Well that's to be expected, but this sounds cool!
Heh. I haven't payed for windows yet, just gotten upgrade disks from dell for free :P

Yep yep. I get Windows free through my school. WIN.
i remember when Apple announced OS X Lion and Xcode 4... he watched the keynote on his iPad on the bus to a dragon boat race. now i understand his excitement :P /cc @jtbandes
hahaha... the app submission process is being demoed. suck on that, apple. they will actually tell you what each step of the app submission process is, and what might be causing your app to proceed or be rejected.

Well right now it looks like I'll need a MacBook for college, so I might be skipping out on Windows 8 for a bit :P

@SimonSheehan why would you need a MacBook for college? Also hello bootcamp :P

@nhinkle School requires it for video editing class :P
or image editing, whatever i decide to do

12:08 AM
Where do you think you'll go to college?

A local one, Durham College. durhamcollege.ca

Already downloading

ditto
6 hours to DL :(

10 minute

12:11 AM
by "already" do you mean "before @nhinkle told you"? Because if so, why didn't you tell me it was available!?
@SimonSheehan fast school connection?

1 hour! (but I doubt it!) Thanks.,.. I thought it wasn't until 3:00 AM uk time

Heh, it'll be 10 hours for me. Stupid home connection. Wish I were at college right now.

Oh, down to 2MB/s now
Back up to 2.5 now..

Can you imagine what their bandwidth is like!?

@nhinkle Its 8pm! Nowhere near school :P

12:12 AM
they should use torrents :(

Its my home connection

ohh... Forgot... I can test it sooner, I have ESX in a DC running now... lets test this...

32mbps, burstable to 50

then you have a much nicer home connection than I do @SimonSheehan
(it looks like they released it early)

i enjoy it :P

12:13 AM
i have a system that just happens not to have an OS ;p

I love holding steady at 2.8mb/s
This is....awesome

@nhinkle are you on Twitter? going to post the link and want to give you credit!

@nrhinkle
98 tweets, 25 followers, following 25 users
@SimonSheehan i haaatteeee you
Windows 8 dev preview released early! Get it now! http://dev.windows.com/

37% done ;)

Hmm... I was already following you, but, forgot to add you to a column so it wasn't coming out on my tweetdeck... done now

12:17 AM
3 >_>
... or...

if I weren't streaming the dev preview at the same time it'd probably be faster >_<

i could fire up a linux box, and snarf it down with axel

Anyone else got twitter? I want to follow some people i know :P

@SimonSheehan look at who I'm following and who's following me. Half of 'em are SU folks

Haha, okay.
I really need a new twitter picture.

12:21 AM
I don't think it is working... No idea why it is saying 860MB
Argh... none of the links are working from the VM... all showing wrong size :(

Here locally it is showing 4.8GB - same as site
something funky may be going on

HOLY SHIT did you see that fast boot?!

O.o
2 Minutes until I'm done.

In the DC, it is finished, but, it is only 680megs :/

12:26 AM
:/

Oh well, shoing 4.8GB here and one hour left, fingers crossed it works for you! I have no idea what is happening... can only guess their CDN is playing up (can you imagine the load!?)

i'm using a download manager... since I'm sure it'll time out at some point

DONE!
Firing up virtualbox

... Just got the new printer/scanner I did the question about... bloody hell... HP give it to you in a carrier bag! this is weird!

@SimonSheehan aaaaaggggg

12:29 AM
@SimonSheehan good luck!

AHAHAHAHAHA
1.5 mbps using axel
@WilliamHilsum: cost cutting? ;p

@JourneymanGeek what is axel?

@JourneymanGeek ... in a box!

linux CLI download accelerator
@WilliamHilsum: oh, that's common these days

hehe, haven't purchased a printer for 4ish years!
I was going to post a picture! I won't bother then :P
argh... doesn't make it any easier to come out the bag

12:31 AM
Installing now!

gah i'm pulling a mere 160 KBps. 8 hours to go.

Black screen..

Check the MD5... I don't get how it can be so small

Someone needs to start a torrent of it :P

12:32 AM
my upload sucks though :/

i will, if i get it >_>
eh its a direct download
WEBSEED~

"Windows 8 developer preview"
woooot
what the
"Your computer needs to restart"
First BSOD i think..
Wonder if its not Vbox compatible
and crash again...
I'd say its breaking virtualbox
Let's try this again..

weird. maybe being a dev preview it can't handle virtualization. that'd be weird though.

It would be weird. considering microsoft puts so much of their visualization stuff in the linux kernel...
I wonder if i should try Microsoft's virtual PC

Bugger.... my new printer is the wrong shape for the desk riser thing it's on... damn tray comes out too far :(
... Mind you, as you are using Virtual Box, not really sure... unless there is a newer version out :/

12:43 AM
I'm trying virtual PC 2007
assuming MS made their own product support it
And then no...
well then
That was an awesome waste of 2.8 GB. What do.
Okay figured it out!
Lets try this again!

@SimonSheehan what was the problem?

Got an error. Have to enable ACPI apparently

oh, did you just get the 32bit version? That is why I was going to say about being too small! Sorry if I missed it :/ .... But... I still wonder why my DC only download ~680MB

:P
Not ACPI, APIC

14 minutes to go :(

12:55 AM
Oh dear
Error again
Looks like its gonna be a vbox fight tonight

hmm
what'd i have to use to create a USB installer off a win8 iso?
hm, nvm. the win7 tool should work

Okay, mixing Vbox settings to mixed effects..

@AarthiDevanathan : my mom says it is ghat - its not tamil tho

1:10 AM
My friend has a picture
of what you see when you login

1:20 AM
alright everyone! check your email!

Sweet, 4 MB/s.

hmm
does the swag price need me to take shipping into account @nhinkle?

@JourneymanGeek no

@nhinkle: Hmm. Only automaticly generated birthday mails. Oh wait, junk mail...

did it go to spam? i was worried that might happen...
"contest... prize... winner..." sounds like spam :P

1:25 AM
^^

@Gareth I need to go right now but I will get in contact with you shortly about the problem you mentioned in your email.

4.8 GB doesn't fit on a DVD, right?

ok thanks! :) bloody Great Firewall.

hmm
@TomWijsman: no

So, this means I can only read DL? :S

1:28 AM
oh
there's DL DVDrs

Argh, why can I only read and not write. Frustrating...
Oh, this looks nice.
Short vertion: http://ifttt.com/wtf

@TomWijsman Try using USB? :/
20 minutes left here! Can't wait

Woops, forgot the download was still going. Thanks you auto-resume.
@WilliamHilsum: Sounds like a plan!
Now I need to fetch myself a 8 GB USB somewher...
5.1 MB/s here.
But I need to go sleep soon;
can't try it tomorrow because I'll be in Brussels (Avril Lavigne);
so it'll be for Thursday.
Dunno if I'm going to actually replace Windows 7
because it's just developer and not a beta.

Some geek you are! this should come first! :P

Perhaps try virtual to see how that goes
or hear from you guys what it's usability is besides developing.

1:43 AM
... Not so impressed with my new HP printer... will probably blog about it soon.

@WilliamHilsum: I'll at least be proud to have it.
Got to love the speed of Microsoft's servers
Got it, cya...

jealous of you all :( I'm only pulling in 32kB/s

lol
@Gareth: great firewall?
i got 2-3 mbps with cheap trix

probably
I think Microsoft just hate China
it's not like anyone here actually BUYS their software
that's a thought... maybe my DVD guy has a copy of Windows 8 ;-)

lol
i can probably set up a torrent >_>

1:56 AM
total edits this month:

2:10 AM
And... Downloaded!
@Gareth Well Done Mr 1337 editor!

gah
this won't boot

music to my ears, to hear you're all having problems getting it running. Hare and the tortoise! I'll be first, you see!

just have to wait... a day... to download it

anyone downloaded the 32 bit version?
could you upload bootsect.exe? all my boxen are 32 bit >_>

2:19 AM
@JourneymanGeek I am testing it right now with Vmware Workstation... Will let you know
How far/where did you get?
I can officially say.... Bollocks :(

@Gareth hop over to the ask-a-mod room for a sec and we can work out your problem

@WilliamHilsum I hate working with VMware.
@WilliamHilsum Great product. Complacent company.

@surfasb Why? I have it open on my machine 24x7? Right now, you won't believe what I have running on it!...
I have a Win 2k8r2 machine with Vcentre, and 2x esxi boxes testing out vmotion and stuff... I really love it! (just a bit pricey!)

I'm glad I get VMware for free through my school :D

@WilliamHilsum vSphere 3 and 4 are king.
vSphere 5?

2:25 AM
I have to say, I am shocked that the download page doesn't show more about virtualisation - they must of guessed that people would want to do it

ok, got it started!

@surfasb yeah... using that, with latest vcentre - only trial though... probably won't use it... very pricey :(

@WilliamHilsum: needed a 32 bit compatable bootsect.exe
which i found ;p

awesome
I'm trying to fix my wacom drivers.
For the most part, it works well though.
Do find a tabletPC to install it on. I got it installed on my HP tx2

damn i wish i owned a tablet >.<

2:35 AM
@Gareth: Installed!
also, need a torrent?

I curse you with a thousand BSODs
2

... please give instructions? Only thing I can find is to update to VMware Workstation 8 beta... which, I don't really want to do if I can help it

Notice to SU Contest winners: if you didn't get an email with instructions, check your spam box. If you can't find it there either, make sure you're checking the email associated with your Super User account. I pulled them right off your user info. If you still can't find it, ping me in the Ask a Mod room.
3

@WilliamHilsum That's what pisses me off about VMware.
@WilliamHilsum You can't do that to your user base.

No excuses for their price rise recently - that is just crazy

2:49 AM
@Gareth: on it now
there is no classic start menu from what i can see - start throws you into full screen
OTOH, this would work VERY well on a TV
reboot! (to see the reboot time)

@JourneymanGeek doing a "reboot" will do a normal long boot. You have to shut down, then power on, to do a "fast boot"
This is so you can do a full clear-everything reboot when you need to

ahh
i couldn't find the reboot thing without logging out ;p

so... how long 'til Google comes out with a touchy-feely Chrome, and firefox, etc?
IE10 will have a headstart on marketshare if they don't hop on it

eh, they still have a normal IE

I know, but if people are using the Metro-style one, they'll want ChroMetro too

3:00 AM
as an addin!
I'm using a IE9 styled firefox

3:19 AM
how do i shut it down 'properlu' without logging out?

5 freakin hours left
this is what happens when your parents don't give a rat's ass about technology and you're at home for the summer

27 freakin hours left

high five for shitty internet! _\||/
^ that's a hand. with 5 fingers. trust me.

weird, not sure if my last message (parody of yours) came through - it's green and said it timed out

@Gareth that would be a "no". Better try again.

3:32 AM
this is what happens when your government don't give a rat's ass about technology and you're in China for the summer

why are you in china right now? and how long 'til you'll be back in Britain (that's where you're from, right?)

\||/_
yeah I'm from the UK. I've been in China for 3 years, married, enjoy it here most of the time... just not the net
no limit on how long I'm here (so long as they keep renewing my visa)

why are you in china? doing work or what?

yeah, working here
originally for six months... ha

cool
glad you like it, anyhow

it's great - I like it because of the challenges, it keeps you fresh and alert. everything is ridiculously overcomplex. however IT is the one area I get pissed off by because there's no real workaround (apart from VPNs for blocked sites)... it's just crap, end of

for all you people still waiting ;p

I'd look @JourneymanGeek, but Google Plus is blocked too :(
can you imgur it?

....
ya, i guess

what's your initial-only-been-using-it-an-hour feeling?

3:38 AM
fancy schmancy

its horrible

the thing is, you know there's some guy drawing up the plans for Windows 9, saying "argh all that Metro stuff is shit, let's do this instead"

to the left are the new apps. to the right is old apps imgur.com/6jPJ8

thanks for the screenies btw
not sure if I'm right thinking this, but it feels a bit... busy... which is weird given the icons background Windows comes from

and last imgur.com/0VGod -> this is the 'legacy' explorer. the win button will throw you into the green screens
and the URL is amusing

3:42 AM
it reminds me of those full screen launchers you used to get bundled with horrible PCs
like some sort of 3D Packard Bell launcher!!!!!!11 for Windows 95
of course, I haven't used it yet, but it's just my perception

oh god, i remember that
it was a better version of bob from what i remember

yeah

ahh
it searches!

3:56 AM
and that's all for now

4:19 AM
@JourneymanGeek native install or used virtualization? VirtualBox?

4 more hours... ughjhr

4:34 AM
@nhinkle well I still have atleast 12 hours before I can even start downloading it

@Sathya why? o_O

@nhinkle just reached work. Download link wasn't ready when I left home.

ah. bummer. you need remote access to your computer

really like how the guy did the 'local users' on his ASCII diagram:
0
Q: Squid3 to use a parent ssh SOCKS proxy?

c2h2I would like to have a local squid3 server to use the forwarded parent SOCKS port 9999, and serve local users at local server port 3128 to avoid govt censorship... I have ssh tunnel forwarding a remote SOCKS port to local: ssh -D 9999 remote_user@remotehost To illustrate the problem LOCAL U...

@nhinkle I do, except that my Internet connection is powered by my 3G phone which I have with me..oops

4:38 AM
@Sathya whoops. well that sucks

@nhinkle yeah. On the bright side, I'll know what to do and what not to do

Morning :-)

After reading a review of the Drobo FS, I became obsessed with network attached storage (NAS). I realised that a NAS device would neatly solve a couple of long-standing problems I hadn’t got around to fixing: data backup and data organisation.

This post will explain how I picked the hardware and software for my NAS.

The Drobo FS itself, while a compelling product, is expensive. There are also some worrying stories of problems with poor read/write speeds, noise, and the slightly ropey client software. But mainly, I feel it’s my duty to build my own computers. …

@Sathya: native install, underpowered box

@JourneymanGeek ah. Morning @ManjotSingh
wonder if I can install it to a USB drive

well, no, not really. c2d 2 gb ram. happened not to have an OS right now ;p
there's supposed to be a USB boot option somewhere.

hmm.

... am i the only guy here who has it running?

5:07 AM
would seem so

HAPPY ENGINEERS DAY
When and why do we celebrate Engineer's Day?

September 15 is celebrated every year in India as Engineer's Day to commemorate the birthday of the legendary engineer Sir M. Visvesvaraya (1861-1962).

Internationally recognised for his genius in harnessing water resources, he was responsible for successful design and construction of several river dams, bridges and implementing irrigation and drinking water schemes all over India.
I PROUD TO BE PASS OUT FROM Visvesvaraya Technological University(GNDEC BIDAR)

bah, VTU sucks donkey balls.

What does it mean?

lol
you passed out?

yes by chance,lol
It was tough but not impossible

5:10 AM
did they have to splash water on you to wake you up?

because of VTU I am here ;)
yeah! no usually I splash water on my friend to wake them up at 2 am ;

If anyone wants to download the 64 bit gigantic dev version iso of win8 tinyurl.com/6k5xnqr - you might want to add wdp.dlws.microsoft.com/WDPDL/… as a webseed
I'm here cause,... i want to be. Don't need no stinking badges... well, actually i wouldn't mind badges...

When is MS going to start using torrents to distribute their pre-release stuff? it would make it so much easier for everyone else

@JourneymanGeek yes, barely - I should add.

@nhinkle: when they make their own version of it

5:15 AM
@JourneymanGeek Are you doing MS or MBA?

lol
BS/Bcomm double major
but i don't need an education to know what i know. I need one to get the chance to apply it.

lol,What is better MS or MBA or MTech for developers?

ML

I am thinking to pursue masters
o_o what is ML?

Master of Life

5:19 AM
In that I am having experience no need to pursue ML
btw,ML is a general-purpose functional programming language developed by Robin Milner

@Gareth Win.

5:56 AM
@ManjotSingh: i'd see what my boss has, and get the same ;p

6:29 AM
i have been downloading all day, and yet there are still 3 hours remaining. boooo.

Fail internet
Maybe I should make some videos of my Tablet PC. Muhahahahhaha

aaaaahhhhhh
hm. i should convince @Ivo to let me use blog funds to purchase a tablet :P
actually, I should convince a tablet manufacturer to send me one to review for the SU blog. heheh.
well i've been logged in here basically all day... I think it's time for some sleep. see y'all later

@nhinkle THIS. I bet you could convince a manufacturer or a retailer to lend you a leased unit or something.
Plus, you'll now be a sponsored celebrity.
Your lifelong dreams come true.
Mine isn't a multi touch tablet anyways.
It's almost four years old
But it works like the demos.

6:55 AM
lol
right. moving the arrow to the right 'minimises' metro apps on win8. still not sure how to close it

7:10 AM
morning all

7:23 AM
morning

hi

hmmm, Fogcreek's new "thing" is a new collaboration tool?

@DMA57361 yep

looks interesting ... but then I've never really used any others to compare
heh
I still don't have flash setup for this FF portable install
so I tried to visit the Trello site with IE - to watch the video

don't think IE is supported

7:28 AM
quite strict modern-browser only limiting
not, I should say, that I think that's entirely a bad thing
oh, and Win 8 is about already I see...

Ya win 8 baby
I've already figured out how to crash it!
Actually it's because I have an old computer.
If I configure the Realtek sound ports on my TabletPC, it will crash.
Woot for Dev previews

meh, I might try it at some point... but it requires effort that I'm not sure I can be bothered to exert at the moment

lol
i might try getting a VM install later
and no, i wouldn't say its ready
its stable, but needs a metric crapload of polish

lol
to be expected

7:47 AM
I like this subtle change

yeah, I love spotting the small ones like that
I don't think they announced the "just now" change either
when you make an edit or post an answer etc, it says "just now" instead of "0 secs ago"

Windows DEV Preview.iso - 1hour remaining (730kB/s)
I'm...quietly impressed. Normally, I'd get 120 or less.

@Gareth yep.. that was in response to feature request about comments, they did it for all
presumably, the timing code is used across all
and it links to the faq now @Gareth

nice
still, I would have preferred a nanosecond reading of when the last edit was made. I'm wired directly into the edit mainframe

@JourneymanGeek It's a Dev Preview. No kidding.
