@curiousdannii REading the question as specifically what Christian groups would teach this?

@narnian Sorry to be a pain in regard to that daemons question but that OP is being a bit of a pain -- they get a late answer that isn't even remotely representative of Christianity and doesn't answer the question (at least not the part of it that would have been on topic for the site) and promptly "accept" it. In order to deal with that and make a point about having to actually answer the question asked I kind of need your answer to play by the same rules.

@Caleb I know you mods have some pretty awesome tools available to you, so I wanted to just say that I have a suspicion that this user and this user are the same person.

@fredsbend That's always a possibility, but the magic tools show nothing. Different IP's, different emails, different everything along those lines. On the other hand both users look like they won't make it far. I'd just deal with them each per-normal unless something else comes up.

@Daи You know, I've read your response here a few times over a few days and I've concluded, we're talking about different things and I'm not sure what you are saying.

Q: Are we conditioning people to question all things through a denominational lens?

LCIIII've been on this SE site for a month. I know it's purpose and I really like it. I understand this is a secular site that facilitates Q&A for the topic of Christianity. Awesome. Boo ya. Love it. Jordan GarrettI would say, as a non-Christian agnostic (Who has given some thought to Christian conversion, as well as to alternate brands of Theism, IE: Sikhism, Sufism, etc), that the "God-shaped hole", as it were, originates not so much from the fact that God "designed" us to seek Him out, but from the fact...

An anonymous user just made a substantial edit to this post claiming that it was his. Kind of weird. The edit looks too much like the same stuff of the original, so I approved it, but I think the mods and community should be aware of this odd occurrence.
@Daи I know you're busy, so respond whenever, but I was responding to your blog post, so it is me that has erred. What exactly was I supposed to learn from the post?

Hey @Jesse :)

hallo @Flimzy

How's it going?

Ehhh. Pretty good. In a work call at the moment. Too much a-changin'. Sometimes too much to wrap my head around. Haha.

What line of work are you in?

My role is a combo of Admin/Sales stuff. Company provides data/leads like Hoovers/Jigsaw/Salesforce and some design stuff too for web and mobile apps.
Ex-employee issues resulting in very belated (and needed) changes.

4:56 PM
Interesting
I'm working too.

Great success. What do you do?

I'm a programmer/manager

Oh nice. What for, if you don't mind me asking?

I work for a rapidly growing cloud services provider called eFolder.
My specific project is a cloud-based e-mail security service... spam/virus filtering, business continuity, etc, for email
We're always hiring!
;)
If you have a sales background, you might be a good candidate... our sales organization is expanding very rapidly
and many of our positions are remote

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind!

So regarding my answer, which mentions the Bruderhof, I'm curious about your fundamental problem with the answer. Are you sincerely concerned about the technical definition of "denomination?" Or do you think the answer fails on a more fundamental level to answer the intent of the OP's question?

It would depend on the OPs response really. They only said denomination, which I had always been taught inferred Christian denomination. With the site being Christian.SE in particular, I took it as implied that the OP was asking about Christian denominations that sell all their possessions. Not just communities, not just the clergymen, but denominations where the community actively engages in it.
A community that doesn't have a denomination (under this assumption), and also has mixed religions values, would not be an answer to an (inferred) Christian denomination

The last sentence of his question places an emphasis on the entire community (lay persons included) living without possessions, not just monks, etc. I see that as key.
And certainly the Bruderhof meets that criteria, as does the other church I mentioned in my answer.

I'd agree, however the "entire community" bit is preceded by "denomination". On a Christian site, I expect that implied "Christian denominations", as coming to ask a question about Islam denominations or Jewish denominations wouldn't exactly fit with the sites purpose (to my knowledge).
Bruderhof are not completely Christian (there are Jews/Muslims/and more religions that live within their communities), and do not consider themselves to be a denomination - nor are they viewed as one, with respect to that. A denomination can't just be a denomination, because a denomination must be organized and autonomous, as opposed to a sect. I'd consider Bruderhof a sect, but not a denomination.

Have you read the dictionary definition of 'denomination'?
Also look at the original question, which did not mention denominations at all. The "denomination" clarification was added to make the question on-topic... because originally it asked about "all Christians."

5:24 PM
"Do any denominations sell all their possessions as it seems the Early Church did?"
Early Church infers Christianity. Also:
Are there any denominations in the world where the congregation (not monks, nuns etc.) actually does this?
from the question
Even with the edits, it still infers Christianity

I think it's quite clear from the question--and if not from the question as it stands, from the history of the question and comments--that the OP is interested in knowing if there are any Christians who practice the selling of all possessions among lay persons. The OP has no specific interest in whether an official denomination versus some other official sect/group/congregation does this.

But who can say that apart from the OP? It appears we both have conflicting opinions based on the wording :)
Not something for a big fuss over methinks.

Well, I asked the OP for clarification.
Even if the answer is "There are no denominations that meet your criteria" I can't imagine the OP thinking my answer is worth a down-vote.
At worst, it's a "No, but..." answer

5:43 PM
wait wth I downvoted you? fixing that now
Even thought I didn't agree with your answer, I still thought the answer itself was good.
I meant an upvote.

6:21 PM
@Jesse: I'm curious where you heard/read that the Bruderhof includes Muslims and Jews... they are clearly (from their website) a Christ-centered organization, modeled after Acts.
And their web site makes no mention of Muslims at all, and the only mention of a Jew is a convert who grew up Jewish.

6:46 PM
they themselves are, yes. but their organization as a whole is much broader. i meant Islam when talking Muslim, that was erroneous on my part as well. only human, lol. this is why I like to learn

6:57 PM
I still don't see how they would accept Muslims or Jews into their organization.
Their web site clearly states that a belief in Christ is essential to membership.
Can you point me to something that says they do?

On their own site in the FAQ, it's asked "Do you have to be religious?" - to which the woman responds, with a laugh "Not at all!"Childlike faith and wanting to follow Jesus. (Islam does, surprisingly teach Jesus. I work with someone who practices Islam). Jesus is the essential part.
I could believe in Christ, but not consider myself (contradictory, of course) as a Christian
I see nothing on their site that indicates you MUST be Christian, you just have to follow Christ

Islam teaches that Jesus existed, but not to have faith in him.
following Christ is decidedly NOT muslim or Jewish

Thats what I thought too, but I was wrong

as both Jewish and Muslims teach that Jesus was not who he is said to have claimed to be--God.

You missed my Messianic comment
Messianic Jews believe in Jesus (one goes to church with me)

7:04 PM
Sure, but they are also Christians

and Islam does believe in Jesus as the Messiah. They just don't believe in the Resurrection

(well, according to most definitions)

They think it contradicts the Second Coming

@Jesse No, they don't.

Islam believes Jesus was just a prophet.

7:05 PM
So my 60 year old Islam coworker is wrong?

he may well be confused :)

they call Him Isa Ibn Maryam

@Jesse They don't believe in him as even a Messiah, much less The Messiah.

RichardI'm not really sure where to go with this question, since it is a question regarding Christianity. Also, I'm seeking a Christian perspective on this rather than a Muslim one. (Sorry for the spam - but there is a lot on this)

That last answer mentiones that Muslims believe that Jesus "was the messiah but does not save through dying on the cross"
I would be curious to hear more of the Muslim perspective on that. Maybe I'll form a question on Islam.SE.

A lot of Christians don't believe we are saved through the death on the cross

Not a lot of orthodox ones, though
Historically, that has adhered pretty closely to all Nicene Christians

Yeah, that's true, but we don't see a lot of "orthodoxies" being practiced in their entirety. It's all different than it was before. MUCH different.
I was once asked a question I could not answer:
"With how much has changed since then, would we even recognized Christ when He returned?"
"Or would we think He is a liar?"

@Jesse I don't think the answer has anything to do with change. Many people at his time didn't recognize him, either.
It has more to do with your heart, and what type of Jesus your'e expecting.

7:14 PM
So...
You think your Jesus will be different from my Jesus?
I think Jesus will be Jesus whether what we think of Him is true or not (<-- "precept of man" thing, not saying He wasn't real)
I believe here is too much division in the Body, and that's going to make Judgement a very uncomfortable experience - I think even for those that are right.

I'm certain my concept of Jesus is different from yours.
The question is whether either one is close enough to the truth that we will recognize Jesus when he comes.

What is your concept of Jesus?

That's a complicated question :)
One that could literally fill books.

Hahaha. I suppose so!

As we are both Christians, I suspect our concepts are fundamentally similar.

Q: Bible Recommendations For Historical Use

Pat TrainorExperts, I'm frankly confused by all the versions of Septagint, Koran, Torah, and the myriad of Christian bibles available, and need your experience weeding through the muck to find the gems. Too often I see new versions of ancient texts taking severe liberties like making them gender-neutral, ...

that fallen from grace question that just got closed probably had a single, unbiased anwer

@Jesse As my latest comment on the question points out, it has far from a single answer.

Then answer it for me, because I'd like to know too, and I don't find that in any way answers the question - who has fallen from grace and regained it? I know what blapheming the Holy Spirit is (at least, what I've been taught I'll admit), but I know of no one who as lost it and gained it back.
know should be "heard of"

I cannot answer that question, within the framework of this site. Because it has multiple answers, depending on which doctrine you subscribe to.
If you are a Calvinist, the answer is "Nobody."

Calvinists are wrong then, because the Bible says differently. Continue.

7:51 PM
Calvinists would disagree with you on that.

Hi, @Flimzy Are you in Mexico?

I'm not a Calvinist, but I do disagree with your statement that "the Bible says differently"
@PaulVargas: I'm in Guatemala at the moment. ¿Por qué?

A Calvinist can tell me I'm wrong, but the Calvinist would be calling God wrong.

@Jesse: There are others who say that every time you sin, you lose your salvation, and that a sinners-prayer is necessary for re-salvation. According to such folks, practically everyone who is a Christian has re-gained their salvation.
@Jesse: I encourage you to try to understand Calvinists rather than simply calling them "wrong." It's not really in the spirit of Christ, or of this site, to engage in "I'm right, you're wrong!" arguments.

@Flimzy ¿No estabas en Guadalajara, Mexico?

7:53 PM
Probably the biggest verse for that is Hebrews 5:11-6:20

@Flimzy Soy de Mexico, D.F.

@PaulVargas: Por el momento, no... Estaba en DF más recientamente que en Guadalajara :) Llegaré al aeorpuerto allá el 20 de julio.

@Jesse Are you an Arminian?

I'm not saying this out of opinion, but out of the Word, but I will respect what you tell me.
@PaulVargas Yes I am

@Jesse: Well, the Calvinists say the same thing.
@Jesse: So, you see... you both have the certainty of God's word on your side.
@Jesse: Yet you disagree with each other.
@Jesse: Surely you can see that "well then you're just wrong" is not a constructive way to address the disagreement.

7:55 PM
@Jesse Do you believe that salvation can be lost?

ya es la hora para comer... hasta luego

@Flimzy Saludos. Provecho.
@Jesse There are many flavors of Arminianism.

@PaulVargas I don't even know what Arminianism s
is*

Arminianism is based on the theological ideas of the Dutch Reformed theologian Jacobus Arminius (1560–1609) and his historic supporters known as the Remonstrants. His teachings held to the five solae of the Reformation, but they were distinct in some ways from particular teachings of Martin Luther, Zwingli, John Calvin, and other Protestant Reformers. Jacobus Arminius (Jacobus Hermanszoon) was a student of Beza (successor of Calvin) at the Theological University of Geneva. Arminianism is known as a soteriological diversification of Protestant Christianity. Dutch Arminianism was origina...

Anywho, no I don't believe salvation can be lost, at least not to a true Christian (1 John 3:6 & 1 John 2:19, if you choose they apply of course)

8:02 PM
@Jesse A true Christian can shall fall away from the faith?
1 Timothy 4:1, is for false believers?

no no. pardon my poor wording. A true Christian can't, because they are born anew and are a new creation, and dead to the world of sin (per Scripture).

@PaulVargas that's a pretty standard calvinist interpretation of that verse

@Jesse Where are you from? What do you do?

@PaulVargas I'm from Minnesota. Work-wise? I have an administrative/sales role at a company that provides web design/app development and data/lead generation.
In my free time, I manage a horse farm/camp with my fiancee and do some ministry

@Jesse Do you attend in a Baptist Church? Many churches of that denomination seem to predominate there.

8:14 PM
@PaulVargas I don't label myself with a denomination. I think many of them are right in some of their teachings, and many are very wrong in some of their teachings. I just learn from the Bible. I know that sounds off because that's how pretty much every other denomination started, but I'm going into it not expecting to get anything out of it - because my needs are met.
I, particularly, am not a fan of Baptists
The ones in my community are very scary

@Jesse But I guess that you attend a church.
How do you serve other Christians?

@PaulVargas yes, on occasion I do. I attend one that (claims to be) non-denominational because an older couple I know likes what I have to say sometimes, as does the Pastor on occasion.

@Jesse You make use of your free will.
Hi, @JackDouglas How are you today?

@PaulVargas Yes I do. And I serve my fellow Christians by preaching the The Good News of the Gospel.

@JackDouglas Is there daylight still there?

8:21 PM
3 of the 5 churches I have attended in the past don't preach anything from M,M,L,&J
and almost completely ignore the messages in Paul's epistles

@PaulVargas no :)
a month ago it would have been...

back for a bit
@Jesse That's what Calvinists believe, which you just vehemently said was wrong. Now you're confusing me.

@Flimzy you came into @PaulVargas and I's conversation, so I don't know what you're talking about. I pointed out that I think a lot of denominations are right in some stuff, and wrong in others.

@Jesse There are some churches Baptist faithful to Scripture.

@PaulVargas I know there are
@PaulVargas the ones in my community are just scary people - WBBC scary

@Jesse: You're in the US, right? There are many good Baptist churches in the US.

@Flimzy I realize that. Like I said, I know for a fact not all are the same and a lot of them are very right, but a lot of them are very wrong too. Not opinion wrong, but very painfully obvious flat out wrong.
@Flimzy I'm just limited to what I have here for now.

8:32 PM
"wrong" is always opinion wrong, in matters of religion. :)

@All When comes the issue of Calvinism, Arminianism, other positions... always there is fight!!!!

The important thing to remember here is that our goal on this site is not to determine who is right or wrong, but to understand what each different position teaches

I understand that

We have some very active and productive atheists among us, for instance... it would be impossible for them to participate if we were always trying to decide who is "right."

I have to disagree however, @Flimzy, wrong is not always an opinion wrong. In the case of WBC, I see no Christian justification for picketing the Sandy Hook funerals, for one. As well as the church over here that actively partook in Klan-esque activity.

8:34 PM
@Jesse: But the members of WBC do have a Christian justification for it. So it is a matter of opinion.

@Flimzy What does that acronym (WBC) mean?

Westbro Baptist Church

@Flimzy If anyone can justify making a seen, and a very terrible one at that, at a childs funeral based on Scripture - please do

The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is an American unaffiliated Baptist church known for its extreme ideologies, especially those against gay people. * * * The church is widely described as a hate group * * * * * * * * and is monitored as such by the Anti-Defamation League and Southern Poverty Law Center. It was headed by Fred Phelps (although shortly before his death in March 2014, church representatives said that the church had not had a defined leader in "a very long time"), and consists primarily of members of his extended family; in 2011, the church stated that it had about...
Famed for picketing funerals of gay servicemen and other generally hateful things

"generally hateful" makes them pretty much not Christian

8:36 PM
@Jesse: They do. They're Christians, they're doing what they think is right. I disagree with them... but it's still their Christian opinion
@Jesse: Not true. All Christians hate. It's impossible to love without hating equally.
@Jesse: If you love God, you must also hate that which opposes God.
@Jesse: The issue comes down to how does one effectively love God, and that which opposes God?
@Jesse: That is where WBC differs from most other Christian groups.

@Flimzy I can tell you with certainty that I do not hate anyone
Sure, I dislike some people, but I've never hated anyone
For anything

@Jesse I didn't say you have to hate people. But you must hate.
@Jesse: If you love your child, you will hate anything that threatens your child. War, hunger, rapists, kidnappers.

@Flimzy thats inferring the future. only God knows the future~~ As it stands now, I do not hate.

Many Christians tend to focus on "God is love" without realizing that this means that, by definition, God is also hate.
one cannot have love without also having hate.

I know God hates things. He tells us a lot.

8:40 PM
and Christians, too, must hate things. The bible also tells us that. :)
2

But I have never looked at something or someone and said or felt that I hate it

But getting back on the topic of WBC...
They feel that they are justified in picketing funerals, and they have a chrisitan justification for it
it's a justification with which I do not agree
and I could debate them rigerously on the topic
But it's never appropriate to say that they are simply "plain wrong" because they disagree with me.
2
For one, it's not constructive
and for two, if I say that in an extreme case like WBC... I'm likely to say it in other cases where it's less obvious, and I might actually be wrong.

^ I like you @Flimzy lol you learn me good

I've said "You're just plain wrong" enough times in the past, that a few of the times I turned out to be the one who was wrong.

I suppose that may be true

8:45 PM
I've learned that it's a lot easier, and less confrontational, to just state my opinion and the reasons for my opinion, then let the truth work itself out.

However, justification doesn't make something right.
But I see where you are going
Let us talk about something fun now lol
WBC is not fun to talk about

well, it's about time for me to leave, actually...
