Is Tiffen a good brand for polarizer lenses?
They're on sale for like 80% off right now.

@MattS. I'm not sure exactly how they stack up with the higher end ones, but I've used them before without major issue
I'm not sure if those prices are actually a significant deal though
Adarama's prices are similar
unless it is Tiffen driving the sale

3:46 PM
B+W is a higher end I'm guessing? It's on sale for $80
Yeah, it might be how Amazon lists prices too. I've noticed sometimes that sale prices aren't really sales, but just their price compared to the listed price.
That's why I was curious if they're good filters for super cheap, or okay filters that amazon is listing as being on sale.

that appears to be the case here
that it is just compared to list
both B&H and Adorama have the same prices as Amazon
as memory serves, Tiffen is the decent quality budget brand.
but I've not looked closely in a while
so take that with a big old grain of salt

The downside of a cheap filter is it downgrades the quality of the lens right?

any filter downgrades the quality of the lens
doesn't matter how good it is
the question is how much of a downgrade
and the problems can be different
some use thicker filter frames, which increases vignetting, some are more prone to scratches or less effective filter material, but may not introduce aberations
and others introduce aberrations to the optics
it all depends

4:12 PM
Right, so downgrades the quality comparatively more
But the benefit is better color in the sky and reduced reflections.

4:58 PM
It might be on to luck if one gets both at the same time, as it may happen that best effect on sky happens 90 degrees from best effect on water reflections. A CPL is no miraclemaker.
My answer to wide angle lens + CPL filter combo: photo.stackexchange.com/questions/4760/…

5:31 PM
CPLs are pretty magic used properly though

5:53 PM
That too :)
Touble is, one mostly sees only photos with properly used CPL filter, not those photos that have gone wrong or no effect is showing at all. The reality is the latter one, at least in the beginning: No effect to be seen, or rather ugly effect when there is any.
Expectations and results don't meet.
The idea of a polarizing filter sounds so simple. And it is too. Making it into your photos succesfully is not so simple.

@EsaPaulasto But I have a camera. I'm a photographer!!! ;)

Is there an upside to getting two separate filters for different lenses? Or would just getting the larger filter with a step down adapter do the same thing?

@MattS. I think you are missing a few !!!s there
there, fixed it for you :)
@MattS. main thing is vignetting
though depends on how much larger it is

@AJHenderson 67mm to 52mm

ah, then probably not a problem
that's far enough out that you won't have the larger filter blocking any part of the field of view
the extra space between the optics may cause differences, but hard to say if it would make more problems or reduce them
on the other hand, if you stack the 67s, having it stepped down means less vignetting
my filters are 77 and 82mm for my lenses, so I use separate filters

6:58 PM
stack the 67?

like if you put multiple filters on the 52 mm lens using a 67 to 52mm adapter
then they won't obstruct the lens

But is there any measurement saying that, at least in mostof cases, RAW are less clipped than Jpeg? (I hope the word clipped is clear) — Revious 18 mins ago
it would seem someone is really, really confused about what RAW is
