What's the word for when something sounds too proper?

@OrigamiRobot "It's almost as if it had mushrooms on it"

@badp in your world, does the word glorious mean that you had to pick mushrooms off of something?
2

"Too many mushrooms to be true"
@KevinvanderVelden I ATE THE MUSHROOMS OFF MY PIZZA ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE PIZZA

@badp oh my god I'm so sorry :(
That must have been horrible

IT WAS TRULY GLORIOUS

7:02 PM
Why you be hatin' on shrooms, Kevin?

My brain keeps going back to "clinical" and that's not it.

@GraceNote I don't hate psychedelic drugs!
@OrigamiRobot my brain keeps going to pretentious but that's not right either

THIS IS YOUR PIZZA ON MUSHROOMS
MUSHROOMS. EVERY SINGLE TIME.

@badp the mushrooms make my pizza spin?

@KevinvanderVelden YOUR HEAD WILL SPIN IN GLORY

7:05 PM
@badp shudders

more or less literally depending on the exact type of mushroom

@badp This looks absolutely disgusting.

@Fluttershy It's okay to be wrong.
So completely and far removed from the truth that, from there, all directions point to @Unionhawk

@badp so close to flagging that, it is disgusting!

user15026
@badp If I didnt just hjave an amazing lunch I would be jealous

user15026
7:06 PM
but I did

user15026
and now I am heading out to get delicious portuguese cake

@AshleyNunn oh but I didn't have that pizza. It also had rocket and scales of parmigiano on top.

SOMEONE HELP ME WITH MY SUPER IMPORTANT QUESTION!

@OrigamiRobot NO, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT MUSHROOMS

user15026
@badp so basically even more better

7:07 PM
AND THEIR HORRIBLENESS

@AshleyNunn YES

MUSHROOMS ARE GROSS

user15026
@badp lucky :P

@AshleyNunn YES
If I'm in Italy I must as well make the most of it

Oh, @OrigamiRobot, presumptuous maybe?

7:08 PM
Very dim job markets, almost deathly economy and kickass mushrooms, ham and parmesan on my kickass pizza

Hmm no that's different

No, something kinda like stilted/mechanical

Too formal?

but neither of those words

Mushrooms are fantastic. Anyone who disagrees is wrong about everything ever and forever.

7:09 PM
@Wipqozn lies USER WAS RENAMED "UNIONHAWK" FOR THIS POST

@OrigamiRobot What is your SUPER IMPORTANT question?

No wait, it's starred AND pinned so it must be true

@KevinvanderVelden This is why @badp is my favourite mod.

What's the word for when something sounds too proper?
Like how using medical terminology would sound in regular conversation.

@OrigamiRobot Proper-tastic.
@OrigamiRobot Jargon?

7:11 PM
Jargon is the opposite of what I'm looking for.
Like...robotic... but not that word

@OrigamiRobot I feel like their is a word for that,but I can't think of it.

Proper and without feeling

foppish; finical

@Wipqozn esoteric?
snooty?

@GnomeSlice Oh, that sounds about right!
I hope @OrigamiRobot still has you ignored so I can claim credit for that.
@OrigamiRobot esoteric?

7:14 PM
He doesn't have you ignored, so he saw that.

11 mins ago, by Origami Robot
My brain keeps going back to "clinical" and that's not it.

@GnomeSlice that is part of the joke.

@Wipqozn oh

@OrigamiRobot Pretentious?

7:15 PM
@StrixVaria Pretentious has a ton of feeling. Snobby feeling.
This is more of a "so formal and proper it seems really out of place" type word

Q: PS4 or XBox-One as a living room gaming device

ScisLet me begin by making it clear that this is not a generic "PS4 vs XOne" question, I've read plenty of reviews and discussions. The very specific question is: Which would be better as a living room gaming platform? Meaning if I would use the console mainly for playing games that can be played b...

I give up. You have all failed me.

I'd go with "so formal and proper it seemed out of place".

@GraceNote That's not a word, that's a phrase.

You're a phrase

7:21 PM
@Unionhawk So if your face.
Also @AshleyNunn might know a word for that.
She's into words.

@GraceNote It's become less about finding a word to use and more about finding the exact word I'm thinking of.

@Wipqozn Your linguistic naïveté makes me chuckle and chortle.

Chortle <3

Or is that too simple?

7:22 PM
@OrigamiRobot Just make up a word. If it was good enough for Shakespeare, then it's good enough for you!

@Unionhawk I'm not going to go to ELU and ask the equivalent of an ITG.

iirc, that sort of thing is kind of what they do around there...

@OrigamiRobot

I'd go in the ELU room first

@Unionhawk I don't care. It's not the kind of thing I do.

7:23 PM
And ask "Hey what do y'all think about single word requests".
When the chaos dies down, that'll tell you the appropriateness.

Q: PES2009 PC - How to access the MasterLeague training menu?

IanI'm currently playing Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 - the master league mode. Toward the end of the season I get a message stating - During the off-season transfer period you can also developer players through training sessions. Select the player(s) you want to train and then set the training me...

@GraceNote I think they're fine there, but I could just be a filthy lying Turtle.

@OrigamiRobot grandiloquent?
magniloquent?
technical?

in English Language & Usage, 6 mins ago, by KitSox
@MattЭллен magniloquent Speaking pompously; using swelling discourse; bombastic; tumid in style; grandiloquent.

7:41 PM
@UNI NO! BAD @UNI

Q: Locations of tears in Bioshock Infinite?

user75509Okay, so I've got pretty well through Bioshock Infinite. After defeating the ghost of Elizabeth's mother, I gotta find three tears. I found the first one in the house with the Infusion, but I can't seem to find the other two. Where are they please?

I LIED ABOUT GIVING UP THIS IS GOING TO BOTHER ME FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE

@OrigamiRobot I still think grandiloquent is the closest.

@OrigamiRobot Good. Let the bother consume your soul.

robots don't have souls

7:47 PM
I don't believe you.

@OrigamiRobot overwrought

@Coronus I bet my soul on it.
@SaintWacko Nope :(

@OrigamiRobot grandiose?

I like bombastic.
Are we still looking for that word?

@SaintWacko That doesn't seem emotionless to me.

7:49 PM
I like to say "Bless you" when someone farts because if there ever was a need to ward against signs of demon possession that's probably it.
@OrigamiRobot grandiloquent
somebody who isn't blocked say grandiloquent
But not @Wipqozn

@OrigamiRobot y u ask @StrixVaria about my new stuff? D: It's not good
ALSO HI BRIDGE

@spugsley HI!

@spugsley BECAUSE IT IS GOOD NOW HELP ME FIND THIS WORD IM LOOKING FOR

@OrigamiRobot WHAT WORD

@OrigamiRobot GnomeSlice offered a few that he procured from the ELU room.

7:52 PM
@spugsley A word for something sounding too formal. Like stilted, but not the word stilted. Also, emotionless.

@GraceNote He can't see them.

@GnomeSlice I know
He can use the transcript, though, or otherwise access the material.

@OrigamiRobot Are you looking for this word to leave a comment on my story?

None of what @GnomeSlice is saying is correct because from what I can tell, he forgot to include the "emotionless" part

@OrigamiRobot pedantic?

7:54 PM
@StrixVaria That is what prompted it, yes. I already used "stilted", but now I just want the word I am trying to think of.

academic?

pompous?

@spugsley Pompus is full of pride.
I will never find this word. T_T

@OrigamiRobot not necessarily. There are other uses
OH
ceremonious?

For all I know, I'm thinking of the wrong usage.
@spugsley That feels closer, but no.

7:55 PM
@GnomeSlice How the fuck did you make 10 in the flappy goat minigame? I give up on even attempting that.

@OrigamiRobot Erudite? Scholastic?

...Flappy Goat?

@Unionhawk I got 94 on real flappy bird.

@StrixVaria Scholastic is moving in the right direction

@GraceNote Minigame in Goat Simulator.

7:56 PM
It's a minigame inside Goat Simula-- what he said

Oh, okay, so it is related to that.

@OrigamiRobot are you sure you don't mean pedantic?

Scholastic, education, technical... not quite there...
@spugsley That is not the word I am trying to remember.

highbrow?

oo highbrow

7:57 PM

matter-of-fact?
demonstrative?
analytic?!?!

Solemn?

My brain just tried to use the word I'm trying to think of to describe this. I almost said "No, it needs to be more _______"

???

Objective?!

7:59 PM
thesaurus has weird synonyms for formal

It sounds like a medical word to me

clinical?

57 mins ago, by Origami Robot
My brain keeps going back to "clinical" and that's not it.

@OrigamiRobot oh sorry, didn't see that

It wasn't meant to correct you or anything, I just thought it was funny.

8:01 PM
Exacting?

@spugsley I'm going to try to read your new stuff on the train after I get tired of writing.
Writing on a phone is so shitty I can only do it for like 20 minutes before I ragequit each session.

finicky?

conventional?

fancy

@GnomeSlice fancy is very emotional

8:02 PM
@StrixVaria haaaaaa I didn't tell you it was up because it isn't muich and it's not very good

Clinical is so close to being what I want.

@OrigamiRobot ♫ I've already told you ♫ I've already told you ♫ I've already told you ♫

@spugsley "not very good" bullshit

@StrixVaria This is why i'm telling you about it so you can talk sense into her

I think there's some psychological effect that all writing is perceived by its own author to be the worst writing ever.

8:04 PM
@StrixVaria this. A million times this.

@StrixVaria impostor syndrome?

I've been trying to work through some issues in my story and it makes me hate it so much.

@badp Maybe related to that.

I have no idea where the story is going. I just know I like my characters and that I have a conflict. That's good, right? lol

@spugsley Do you know the end?
Like, my issue was I knew the setup and the finale, but not all the meat in the middle to actually bridge the two.

8:05 PM
@StrixVaria it's usually combined with Dunnig-Kruger effect where people who think their writing is the awesomest write pretty poorly

@KevinvanderVelden Oh yeah that effect. Ugh.

@StrixVaria not entirely. I have an endgame in mind but no idea if it'll actually work once the story situates itself
@KevinvanderVelden hahahahaha I know someone like this and he's actually made a lot of money on his self-pubbed novel

If you have someone else who's already spoilered, maybe discuss it with them to brainstorm stuff.

@spugsley you know stephenie meyer? :o

@KevinvanderVelden seriously, read the description of this shit: amazon.com/Wand-Makers-Debate-Osrics-Wand-Book-ebook/dp/…
I edited this book.
And it's still a hot mess

8:07 PM
I also know someone who self-published a novel, and although I don't think he made a lot of money off it, he's so confident that it's amazing and it's so fucking unbelievably bad.

@StrixVaria hahaha yes I remember you showed me

I can't comment about the plot; I haven't read the whole thing.
But his style. Holy shit his style.

@StrixVaria well, it's not really spoilered because it's just a bunch of ideas and only a resolution to one of hte problems in the story. no idea what I want to do about my bad dude, etc ughhh

> A world of magic in it's infancy....

@StrixVaria this

8:08 PM
@badp There is a time when history begins
@badp I know. I tried to help.
he insisted that was right :D

@StrixVaria I feel like feedback from someone who knows where it's going can't give as good feedback as someone who doesn't in certain areas. Like in a "does this make sense so far" kinda way.

and I wasn't getting paid so I said Ok

@spugsley It's only bold italic in the book description. I'm sure he'll do fine.

@badp again, he has made actual money. Like bought a new car with the profits
and the second one is already out (I did not offer to edit that one I would seriously have pulled my hair out)

@spugsley See? He did fine. Was it a 1:24 scale car?

8:10 PM
@badp hahahah

@OrigamiRobot I think both kinds of feedback are valuable. Feedback from people who don't know the story is useful because you can make sure that you have enough exposition/explanation. Feedback from people who do know the story is useful because they can make sure you're consistently representing the characters and setting.

@StrixVaria I agree, I'm just saying she has a surplus of the latter right now and needs more of the former.
Unfortunately, it's really hard to be in both camps.

Do we not one-box smile links?
My in-browser search automatically searches smile.
Anyway that's a link to his self-published thing.
Take a look inside.
Seeing how shitty some stuff is makes me want to write more.

I just have to keep reminding her that JK Rowling has made a fortune with stories involving names like "Diagon Alley" and "Remus Lupin"

I'm just happy that Amazon has finally moved past buttons being images
...at least on the .com site
The .it site is still stuck in .gif land :/

8:20 PM
@StrixVaria that has really good reviews
Are you sure it's bad

@GnomeSlice They're all his personal friends.

Heh

I can't comment on the plot; that might be amazing.
But I can't read it, because he uses 8 words to describe things that need 1 word.
Every time he ever needs to reference a thing.
Anyway it's just about home time.

THIS WORD IS PROBABLY REALLY SIMPLE AND I'M GOING TO FEEL REALLY DUMB WHEN I FINALLY REMEMBER IT

@OrigamiRobot lol you still can't remember?

8:23 PM
NO t_t

@OrigamiRobot YOU WROUGHT THIS ONTO YOURSELF - IN MORE THAN ONE WAY

@OrigamiRobot Just stop trying and you'll think of it

IT'S NOT A WORD I USE ALL THE TIME
I FEEL LIKE IT STARTS WITH AN F SOUND BUT NOW I MIGHT BE DELUSIONAL

@OrigamiRobot Fedantic
5

NOW YOU'RE JUST MAKING WORDS UP

8:29 PM
I think I'm going to go back and get my Master's Degree :/

@spugsley THAT'S VERY NOBLE OF YOU, BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THAT FOR ME

if I can even get in to a Masters Program
@OrigamiRobot hahahahahahahaha

I'LL FIGURE OUT THE WORD EVENTUALLY

@OrigamiRobot I might learn it when I'm working on my Masters
@OrigamiRobot and I'm not making words up. That's someone being pedantic while wearing a fedora. Fedantic
or a Fez

CC @StrixVaria
Wow, that was fast
@OrigamiRobot @Fluttershy Reef Shot is one of them.
And Prisonscape
Ascendant
Collateral
Echo of the Wilds
tons of stuff

8:43 PM
@OrigamiRobot faskelnlksncnklenasdfad

DIDN'T I JUST TELL YOU TO STOP MAKIN UP ANIMALS WORDS?

@AshleyNunn Woodle Tree is greenlit. :)

Having one of the most common names is hilarious at times.
I just got a mail to ask if I had time to do a wedding photoshoot on monday (I'm a web developer) and two minutes later a mail "woops, wrong person" follows.

I GIVE UP I AM GOING HOME

@fredley I can't seem to log in at all with ChatSEy.

9:05 PM
@Yuki Are you using the Market version?
@Yuki Login problems are understood, I have a potential fix, want to try it?
@Yuki If so

@OrigamiRobot HAHAHAHA I KNEW IT
schadenfreude get

This is starting to gain traction in the press.
Awesome.

@GnomeSlice ...I need to back this

@SaintWacko I'm very tempted as well.
They're going to pass their goal with flying colours I suspect.

@OrigamiRobot finical

9:16 PM
@SaintWacko I still don't get this one

I want to play this now

34 mins ago, by Origami Robot
DIDN'T I JUST TELL YOU TO STOP MAKIN UP ANIMALS WORDS?

@OrigamiRobot I didn't make it up.

@badp How do you know that everywhere you aren't looking right now isn't solid hitlers, standing shoulder to shoulder?

> another term for finicky.

9:18 PM
And they move whenever you look

How is that anything like what I've been describing?

@SaintWacko I could reach behind my back

@OrigamiRobot I think it fits the situation perfectly!

When I said "clinical is so close" I meant in meaning, not in sound.

I'm starting to suspect this word doesn't actually exist.

9:22 PM
@Wipqozn I've been suspecting this for quite some time, but then it keeps almost coming to me

@badp They'd move out of the way
Okay, backed Universim at the $55 tier

@SaintWacko That's not what the picture says

Alpha access for me and my girlfriend
@badp It's implied
Actually, no
If you do so, the hitlers will cut your arms off
:P

actually the field of view is centered in an imaginary point in between my eyes
as a result part of my body would be solid hitlers
but only part of it

9:30 PM
@SaintWacko All I'm saying is, technically you didn't know you were wrong.

@SaintWacko isn't that based on the Schrodinger's Cat case

@SaintWacko OK, that looks pretty darn cool.

@Frank Yeah, no kidding
And it's going to have multiplayer coop
I just want to skip to its release date

9:48 PM
@SaintWacko Running through the rest of their pitch, it sounds an awful lot like Spore meets Black & White.

We are supposed to get really scary stormies tonight :(
@Fluttershy it's all your fault!

@spugsley ...how?

@SaintWacko Isn't th multiplayer some kind of strech goal? or what is that multiplayer strech goal about?

@Coronus his part of the country makes weather crazy and then it comes here!

user15026
@spugsley be safe, pretty lady

9:50 PM
@spugsley makes sense.

@AshleyNunn I installed an "OH NO TORNADO OMG" app on my phone bc it might happen while we are sleeping

No DRM, no internet required (except for multiplayer, which makes sense), no paid DLC, no microtransactions.
Sounds like everything they could do right, they are.

user15026
@spugsley hugs tight

@Arperum Oh, you're right, I missed that

9:54 PM
@SaintWacko And it's a pretty large stretch goal even.

@Arperum Hm, that's too bad
Yikes, yeah
Hm
May have to rethink the tier I pledged

Woo, I capped off that CC question
Arqade > SO for Lua problems
