@casey ah yes, I can't vote to close any more ;-) WOO PUBLIC BETA

@SimonW I know. I can't edit anymore. :(
But yay, public beta!

Well, i think yay. Scary moment too, we kinda get one shot at this...

Yup. But that does mean we're doing okay so far.
Sometimes private betas go for 14 days, not the 7 days we had.
And sometimes they shut sites down in private beta.

I would sort of have expected a meta post to tell us. But hey. Time to start publicising it. And hoping that the front page is in a good state for that.

Neo
i think we are doing good

8:17 PM
nod

Neo
i've left a poster in my grad dept

@SimonW I wonder if we have any Hot Network Questions yet.
looks

Neo
and send an email to my new advisor to pass around the department ill be joining in the fall

we have posters? :-)

Neo
ill also send an email to my advisor

8:18 PM
I'll put an announce on the Coastal List when I get a chance.

Neo
I just said "Check out earth science stack exchange" ect

/me is keen to make sure the oceanographers keep a little niche here ;-)

Neo
Simon, I almost worked for someone who does both ocean and mantle convection simulations (numerical and analog the same)
hes really an interesting guy
but totally scatter brained
wouldnt make a good PhD advisor for me

Neo
IVE emailed him

8:21 PM
So what is it you do, Neo? Are you a phd student at present, or is that in the past?

Neo
I'm a masters student now
in Geodynamics

ah, OK

Neo
graduating in 1 month
well... defending.
then ill be doing a PhD

oh, congrats :-)
nod

Neo
and then maybe ill just live at my parents house
since i dont want a job

8:22 PM
I do not envy you the whole "defense" thing. We don't really have it as such in .uk

Neo
yeah... i had to defend a proposal too ..
it sucks..

@gerrit And it's Earth Day! What better day than this? :P

Neo
i asked my advisor if i could just publish

ah, looks like I can't see the splits of upvotes and downvotes any more either. Wonder which priv that comes with

@SimonW Experienced User.
750 rep.

8:23 PM
ah, thanks

Neo
wait what is this ?

BTW, how do you do the reply in chat that links to the message you're replying to?

Yup, I miss my old privileges. :(

neo: until earlier, if I clicked on the vote score of a question or answer it split into how many ups and downs it had had

@SimonW Uh, hold on a sec.

8:24 PM
@SimonW click the arrow at the end of the chat message (visible on mouse hover)

@hichris123 Looks like you're well on your way to getting a whole lot more ;-0
So I see - thanks

@hugovdberg ... you know how to explain it a lot better than I do. :P

Neo
oh yea it works

@SimonW Didn't someone nominate you? looks If not, I was going to nominate you yesterday, but I got tired. :P

Neo
I'd support simon
i think hes a good =\

8:25 PM
@hichris123 haha you're welcome ;)

Nope, nobody did, and I'm not sure how I'd feel about it. Don't think I have enough SE experience really. And I may have been a little too vocal about certain issues.

Neo
Thats how i feel too Simon

I think I'd accept if I didn't think there were plenty of other good candidates, IYSWIM. But there are
But thank you for the thought glows

Neo
also
idk is mew a troll ?

@SimonW You sure? I wouldn't mind nominating you: I think you'd do a great job.

8:27 PM
@Neo Ahem, remember this gets saved as transcripts. But FWIW no, I don't think they are. They have some good questions & answers on Physics (and probably others, but I can't judge)
@hichris123 In that case feel free to nominate, and let's see what others say. I'm travelling for most of the next ~10 days anyway, so will only be about sporadically

I don't think anybody currently on the site is a troll.

Agreed - there are just some wildly divergent ideas of what should happen in private beta. Personally I have less issue with people writing popular-science questions than I do with people who are clearly motivated by specific rep or fulfilling-commitment targets.

Neo
@SimonW I had a discussion with him that made me feel a little uneasy. but I guess your right... he has some good questions (especially recently)

@gerrit me neither, I think Mew has shown (s)he's at least definitely interested in the subject

@Neo I think they've taken on board some of the concerns. I still feel that the level of the questions we have (not just from Mew) isn't really what we want to attract senior people, but I've said that a number of times, and it's only my opinion.

8:32 PM
@SimonW perhaps I can soon post a few questions related to the internship at the local drinkingwater company I started today, those will then definitely be more in depth questions on hydrology

Neo
@SimonW I agree. Though mew's point about there being few "expert" level questions is valid. They take a long time to think about in my opinion

Awesome :-)
@Neo Yes - and on the academic side in particular, it can be tricky to ask questions that don't (a) Look ignorant or (b) disclose the topic of your upcoming paper ;-) I don't think we want only those sort of questions, we just want to project an image, at first look, as a site that might be able to take a stab at those questions - in order to retain the people who can ask them

Neo
another difficutly, is how broad ES is

I hope Mew will not be discouraged from (constructively) participating in the site from the lack of support of his/her moderator self-nomination (all are welcome to participate, but not all are equally suitable as moderators)

@Neo I don't think that's a difficulty in the long run - just look at StackOverflow. But I can see that it maybe makes the kick-off harder. Or maybe easier, in that just one subdiscipline might never have reached beta ;-)
@gerrit Agreed.
Oh, incidentally I got a "beta" badge with only 4 answers and 2 questions. So I don't know how the criteria work, but they appear to do so ;-)

8:38 PM
@SimonW I'm not sure exactly what the beta badge signifies.

Nor am I. In particular, I am not sure whether it equals having fulfilled one's beta committment. Guess I could probably check that on A51 somehow.
...but I have no idea how. shrugs :-)

@gerrit I also hope mew doesnt take tho downvotes on his/her mod nomination personally but I have my doubts based on earlier perceived bullying...
and really, once you hit 2k rep in beta you have just about all the community mod powers. I like those but don't envy the diamond.

2k is the new 10k?
Meh. I'm only over 1k on one site, and that's not in beta ;-)

8:54 PM
@SimonW in public beta, yes

Neo
interesting
Getting to 2k Rep seems hard =\

9:27 PM
@Neo Getting to 2k rep in a hurry is hard, I think. My (limited) experience is that once you have a few good questions and answers, the rep from them tends to drift in and accumulate for a while. If you keep on with good questions and (especially?) answers, it'll keep doing that ;-)

Neo
9:39 PM
super interested in this question: earthscience.stackexchange.com/questions/436/…

9:51 PM
We have a question in the hot network questions list! earthscience.stackexchange.com/questions/428/…

Neo
coo!
what does that mean ?

@Neo It gets featured on the right sidebar of some pageviews on Stack Exchange.

Neo
oh
that will get us more members

^ It also shows up there.
@Neo Yup, it should.

Neo
im glad that one made it
i think that one had good debate between me and gerrit
and was an example of a popular science question that was not as simple as people think
(or at least I did)

10:21 PM
@JonEricson around? Wondering on the status of MathJax... you should have said 6-8 weeks. :P

Neo
MathJax is similar to Latex right ?

Yeah, it's pretty much the same thing.
Ah, MathJax is the library used to display Latex online.

Neo
Cool. I've actually used mathjax quite a bit, but never used Latex

10:33 PM
@hichris123 as a member of tex.se I take offense :P

@hugovdberg So you summoned the TeX.sx army, here I am. :)

@hugovdberg Close enough. ;)

Q: How can I explain the meaning of LaTeX to my grandma?

Stefan KottwitzI wrote a book about LaTeX, and my proud grandma wanted to have a copy. So she got it, said "What a beautiful picture on the cover!" and - "What is this, LaTeX?". She doesn't know Word, never used a computer. But she reads books. How can I explain what makes TeX and LaTeX special to a non-techni...

Neo
that thread

@hichris123 MathJax uses syntax similar to (La)TeX for making equations in websites, LaTeX is much more than that. It is language to typeset documents, meant to make you focus on your message instead of the layout. Saying 'it is pretty much the same' is equivalent to saying a computational geohydrologist is an earth scientist so all earth scientists are computational geohydrologists..
;)

10:41 PM
Huh, I'm curious now: can you only use some features of LaTeX with MathJax?

Neo
or is it the other way around ?
wait it woudnt be
after 5pm my brain goes away

@hichris123 more exactly none of the features of latex (in that it doesn't use tex at all) MathJax has several input syntaxes MathML asciimath and "TeX" the tex one is inspired by the math markup in latex and the amsmath packages. But it doesn't use tex at all it is a javascript library that takes the input syntax converts it to mathml and then uses one of three output formats (native mathml, html+css or svg) to render it in a web page.

@DavidCarlisle Oh, I see I got the TeX chatroom in here now. :P

@DavidCarlisle ah thanks for the explanation, now I can go to bed and rest assured this confusion will be cleared up once and for all ;)

@hichris123 actually I didn't notice I'd switched rooms until I'd started typing, but thought I may as well carry on after typing half the above:-)

10:47 PM
good night to all of you :)

Night.

@hugovdberg which requires a re posting of:

Neo
I have that feeling so much david.
does accepting an answer detour users from continuing to contribute ?

I think it might.
It depends. If I see the accepted answer is wrong, my motivation to provide a correct answer might actually increase...

Neo
interesting. Some of the questions i've been thinking about have no definite answer; are those appropriate for SE ?

11:23 PM
Perhaps, perhaps not. Best way to see is to ask, worst thing that can happen is that they're closed.
