@HopelessN00b - Evan's calling you out! SE has been a ton of fun today.

@HopelessN00b lol you can't bring SF's cruelty to SU. It isn't actually SF's cruelty per se but rather, sysadmin's cruelty.

Anonymous
@Wesley can I has moderator status

@PatoSáinz No.

@Wesley why niet?

@PatoSáinz Not mean or crazy enough.

9:14 PM
@Wesley I think @MichaelHampton fits both descriptions :)

If one more person asks for help with Gmail while they're not at a fucking computer I'm going to kill someone.

I'm not going to even think about going for SU mod. It's hard enough work keeping you people in line!

@HopelessN00b as a SU regular, I would support more surly cruelty!

wow, Evan Carrol is whiny

@HopelessN00b You'd have to ask a SU mod I think - I don't think there's a way for normal users to view that
@Jacob You mean the results of the Valhalla Rampage?

@RyJones his goal is to get a reaction out of people, and if he succeeds, it makes them look bad... fortunately, I've seen him enough times to know to simply ignore him

@allquixotic I'm sure Evan will make a fine mod for SU then

half of me wants to believe that Evan Carroll is a sockpuppet account for Joel Spolsky or Anna Lear or one of the other SE employees, and they "test" people using his trolling... I mean, how else could it be? he's been suspended from countless chats and sites countless times, yet he remains

Q: Hi! What brings you here today?

200_successOn 2014-04-10, we got some feedback from Stack Exchange Community Managers @GraceNote and @Pops about our beta progress. One of the concerns that was raised about the health of our community is that we have too many one-time contributors, and need more repeat customers. So, I'd like to ask: W...

Code Review is niceland

Server Fault is just trolls disguising as sysadmins AFAIK

@MarkHenderson Gender dismissive, patriarchy affirming, female oppressive things, no doubt.

9:26 PM
@MarkHenderson Not even that. He originally claimed I was calling him the whiny bitch in that quote, despite it being said like an hour before his meta post.

he is a whiny bitch, regardless of timing

"Would you allow questions about DVRs? – TheCleaner 6 secs ago "

It's just that all good lies have a grain of truth of in them. I think in this lie, the grain of truth is that he's a whiny bitch.. Or something like that.

anyone that uses the word patriarchy in a non-ironic way is a whiny bitch.

@PatoSáinz ServerFault comms room is a collection of highly skilled sysadmins that get paid well to sit in chat all day.

9:28 PM
@TheCleaner I'll respond to that when I manage to stop snickering about it.

@TheCleaner Thats because we do our jobs properly ;)

I almost have 30 years of irc experience

@MarkHenderson indeed...I'm here as well remember. :) I still remember my best compliment was when a low level user asked "what do you do here at X company?" -- that was awesome, because it means crap is WORKING....

@TheCleaner Wait a sec... when did I become skilled? Or, for that matter, well-paid?

Anonymous
@RyJones oh irc, good times

9:30 PM
@TheCleaner I've always enjoyed the kind of jobs where, if done perfectly, no one will know you exist.
sound guy was a fun one... if people are looking at you, you probably fucked something up. :)

@TheCleaner I don't get paid well. =(

@Tanner so you're a professional assassin? note to self: stay the hell away from Tanner

@Tanner yeah, to an extent. I don't like upper management not knowing if I exist (which isn't the case).

@allquixotic see, that sounds fun too! or at least I could take care of a few troublesome users...

@TheCleaner dependent clause applicability ambiguity! it "isn't the case" that you exist? nice...

9:32 PM
HopelessN00b and Evan Carrol for SuperUser mods! Who's with me?!

@Wesley I'm sorry mate. If I were hiring I'd help you out...unless you already make over $100k and still think that's "not paid well" in which case, suck it.

my mailman makes more than me

@TheCleaner I'm battling to get about as much as the bag boy gets paid at my local supermarket.
I'm not sure, but I think I suck.

@allquixotic lol

bag boys and mailmen have unions

9:34 PM
@Tanner Don't say the U-word. You'll upset the Libertarians. =P
Or was it librarians.

@Tanner yeah, the only person standing up for my salary is me, #1... and every time I ask about it, it's always "oh, we can't give you anything, because the CEO is demanding a $2 million bonus this year" (they don't say that, but that's what they mean)

No, librarians have unions too. Nevermind.

@Wesley I wanted to be a librarian until I realised how little they get paid and how little work there is for them
Mainly I thought it would be a super cushy job

@PatoSáinz Well libraries I've been to lately have 1980's greenscreens on what looks like a token ring, or some sort of bus network, I assume connected to an equally old mainframe somewhere else
So not much to see there :P

@TheCleaner Neat. I looked into the private pilot thing about 15 years ago now. Skerred me bad. =(

@PatoSáinz A lot of Library stuff is on these "semi-appliance" type arrangements where they don't really get to really manage much of anything, just swap tapes for a backup and manage the various workstations...

> That's a policy decision and I would normally defer to my advisers. But, the current plan is to develop a complex web front-end to a server that speaks to an instance of Chrome (ES6 Canary of course) through an extension using Web 2.0 Websockets, where the instance of Chrome is logged in as ♦ Evan Carroll. This will allow anyone to act as me, by proxy of my browser. I'll run it on BSD, it will be secure. – Evan Carroll 1 hour ago

@TheCleaner Both DVRs and VCRs are potentially on topic, so long as the question in question is a legitimate question, and not a thinly veiled, masturbatory ego-stroking troll, I would allow it. Of course, DVR or VCR questions that are thinly veiled, masturbatory ego-stroking trolling would be disposed of with extreme prejudice... as would the author.

@PatoSáinz I do

@MatthewIfe I was dissecting the startup scripts for the produce application... Mainly for this question.

Anonymous
@MarkHenderson was tongue-in-cheek

@MatthewIfe If one Ctrl-C's or breaks out of the application, the shell is terminated and they're logged out.
Which one is governing that... the set -e or the trap 0?
Also, don't ever forget about filesystem snapshots. Sometimes it'll mess you up.

YAY ALCOHOL

9:56 PM
@ewwhite I think you're doing it wrong actually :).

@MatthewIfe this is old... goes back to HP-UX scripts from 15 years ago

But the ctrl+c acts as a non-zero exit status, so its set -e that aborts, but trap 0 always will run.

so it's not within my control, but it is what's there.

@ewwhite Not in your control? SERVERFAULT IS FOR PROFESSIONALS GTFO!!1!
2

@Wesley Yep, I'm a hack.

9:57 PM
Things that worry me (and it may be that its just a snippet) is that there is no explicit exit in that script after the run-peach.
It may be feasible that the program could exit in a way whereby the user ends up landing in a shell.

@MatthewIfe makes sense... if you were to see the real bash_profile, you'd shake your head.

@ewwhite Referring to this little bit of fun we had this morning: meta.serverfault.com/questions/6272/…

Managed to exit 0.

@MatthewIfe That's what I'm trying to figure out... if there's a way to break out of it.

Anonymous
@Wesley loll

9:58 PM
in my 12 years of experience with it, it hasn't happened.

Also, its probably useless to stay in the script after execution anyway. Unless you know there are temp files and other bits that need clearing up.

no temp files or anything...
full .bash_profile for humor and review...

Best off doing exec /opt/peach/bin/run-peach instead of /opt/peach/bin/run-peach

# .bash_profile

# User specific aliases and functions

# Source global definitions
if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then
        . /etc/bashrc
fi

HISTFILE=~/.bash_history; export HISTFILE
HISTSIZE=200; export HISTSIZE
. /etc/default/ppro
. $DIR/bin/STARTDBC.TXT

# Set up the search paths:
        PATH=$PATH:.

# Set up the shell environment:
        set +u
        trap "echo 'logout'" 0

# Set up the shell variables:
        if [ -f $DIR/bin/hphw/baddisk ] ; then
                banner WARNING
                echo "POSSIBLE BAD UNIX DISK(S)"
Complete with password aging (wut?) and bad disk checks.

Well, oddly there rundbc looks to be sourced.
Another weirdness.

10:00 PM
@MatthewIfe it is... rundbc looks like:
# if they belong to the mview group
        if echo " "`groups $LOGNAME`" " | grep " mview "
        then
                stty stop ^@
                $DIR/bin/mview dbc
        else
                dbc
        fi

        if [ $? -ne 0 ]; then
                echo " "
                echo " "
                echo "Error trying to run Produce Pro. Exiting."
                sleep 5
        fi
        exit
dbc is the program

Ah, right, so in this case dbc always comes back with an exit.
I dont think theres a way of escaping the program execution here.
That isn't to say theres no a way of spawning a shell to replace the running application in the program.

@MatthewIfe One of my systems was hacked once... ;) And the script kiddies masked their IRC daemon as "dbc"

OK other colonials - (@Bob @Andrew @Other british people) - how fucking sick are you of hearing about what Princess Mary is wearing?

@MarkHenderson I never hear this.

I call my botnet software ppro...

10:03 PM
Who is she? That one of the queens sisters or something?

I know what i am the worst at, reusing stuff I did from previous workplaces.

@MatthewIfe She's on tour here at the moment and all. I. ever. fucking. hear. is "she's wearing xyz" and "oh doesn't abc look great on her!"
@MatthewIfe Um, she's married to one of the princes

Like now writing expect script for net net gear backups, and i've done it like at least 2 times before.

The bald one

10:05 PM
@MarkHenderson I'm glad we don't have royalty here in the US! Oh, wait. Hollywood and Fortune 500 C-level executives.

@MarkHenderson There's only once prince. His look changes a lot, but I swear it's just the one dude!

@MarkHenderson foreign media are fascinated with our royals, for the most part, british media doesn't really care unless its the queen, charles or wiliam.

@MatthewIfe Really? Lucky you

Basically the first, second, third in line lineage

I'm so fucking sick of it

10:06 PM
@MichaelHampton I knew it!
@MatthewIfe SO what's the right way to do this? Set the shell to be the executable?

Seeing as you need to setup a bunch of environment variables first and do some pre-setup i think tis OK to run a shell script. If you need to capture the exit call of the main program, then its OK to also run the whole thing inside its own shell script too.
If you dont care about post-cleanup and the exit status of you're program, just run the script in an exec as this will replace the shell entirely with the new script.
This will protect you from ever exiting the program in an abnormal way and gaining control of the login shell.
Certainly wont help you being able to re-execute bash inside the invoking program though.
The way I'd avoid that personally is I'd write SELInux policy over the dbc / mview program to ensure they cannot execute anything but what its being ran as.
That also comes with the added bonus of being able to mail you about any breaches to the policy being done, when, who and where.
Also I dont think its a healthy idea to run the script from /bin/bash then invoking it via the profile.
Best to just make the users shell the actual shell script to run.

@HopelessN00b have you thought about being a mod at Arqade (thus, at The Bridge)?

@PatoSáinz I surely have not. Why for do you ask?

Anonymous
@HopelessN00b that site also have influxes of crappy questions, and could use your sysadmin iron fist a lot more than SU

Anonymous
actually, disregard that. Just be a mod on every SE site.

10:14 PM
Theres possibly a method to modify the ~/.bash_profile to get you a shell on next login, for example.

Anonymous
We'd be better.

Maybe, but truth be told, I wouldn't feel comfortable being a mod at arqade or... well, most anywhere else. Even here, I skip a lot of questions because I just don't know enough about the subject to know if it's good, bad, indifferent, or needs a modhammering.

@MatthewIfe interesting... I'll bring these up to the software vendor.
@MatthewIfe yes, by commenting out "rundbc"
the programmers use that so that they can have shell access

Ugh... and with that, I guess I'm off to... do something about microbiology. Or with microbiology. I should probably find out what before I do it...

truth is, all files in the application directory are 666 anyway...
so someone could just replace the rundbc script

10:18 PM
Nice.

or modify it straight

I'd much prefer running this whole application in its own SELinux confined domain.
That way, its irrelevent what the software vendor does with regards to securing the application.

@MatthewIfe well, I've been hacked many times on these systems...
MANY TIMES

You could also make sure the user logs in as user_u since that does special things like prevent the execution of setuid binaries.
Well wouldn't work with SELinux if its enforcing, plus you'd be notified of when where and who (potentially how).

god dammit java

10:21 PM
In permissive it'd work but you'd get a whole boatload of emails.

Developer in October: I've setup the "testuser" Linux account at Engorged Banana Produce on Production as well as on the "setsys 1" environment. (Login & Password are both "testuser".) Eric wants this linux account to log directly into the 'setsys 1' environment. Can you update the bash profile script to do that?
Today:
Subject: **Engorged Banana** hacked?

Spam is being sent from the server.

.... dont let them have root access.

testuser:testuser was obviously the problem
and no matter what I do, a dev can come along and do that.
[root@Engorged_Banana ~]# su - testuser
************************** C O P Y *****************************
-bash: /ppro/ppro1/bin/setpsttn: No such file or directory

Sure, but you can set the default user creation selinux user to be user_u.
So if they add accounts at least they dont get access to actually like, do anything and you'll be notified.

thus: free shell access... from an IP in Macedonia... sending spam. Something about @Wesley's bike.
@MatthewIfe it would be a nice overhaul

10:25 PM
If you have a test server i'd be happy to setup a selinux policy for your application. Would require a bit of tooing and froing on you're part though. (sending me audit logs)

@MatthewIfe How much time on your part?

Around about an hour in doing an initial policy.

Sure, I have a couple of test systems available

Would almost certain need time on you're part in testing it and sending any more alerts.

definitely possible
@MatthewIfe Let me know what you need.

10:32 PM
What i'd need is your cooperation, a series of audit logs and a test account to try it on (and some instruction for you to setup the test account appropriately). What would be convenient would be root access (perhaps a tmux session with root already setup) to a test host to do the whole thing on directly. But I'm aware thats asking a bit much.

@MatthewIfe Not really much. I have test environments for some of these customers... and pre-production servers.

Alternatively a VM that does all the same stuff (practically) that the dbc program does with root access would be fine too.

do you think you need representative user activity?

Not initially, a test account with some instruction of what would be a typical thing done in a session would be initially good enough.
If you set it up initially we make sure that the policy only ever runs in a permissive state.

k. test system exists

10:34 PM
So that it never breaks anything live on any staging host its put on and we collect more alerts to determine what is needed for the program to run.

SELINUX=disabled
lordy
go to permissive and reboot, correct?

yeah, should hopefully auto-relabel.

(waits patiently for reboot)
uh oh... server didn't come back :)

This a VM?

baremetal
Goes to ILO...

10:42 PM
The relabel may take quite a while.

These new Old Spice commercials....so....weird.

@cole and they work.. I just bought TWO bottles of old spice deodorant!

@ewwhite I do wear Old Spice as well.

That shit burned up my armpits.

@Tanner the shit

@ewwhite Press F11 to see boot messages.

@MichaelHampton I just got a prompt

And for the love of gawd, why does that server have a GUI?

10:47 PM
@MichaelHampton my coworker (unix admin) and I were complaining about how our manager makes us install the GUI on the RHEL boxes.

@MichaelHampton not sure. Boots to runlevel 3. No Window manager is installed

@cole Dunno. Bought some Old Spice deodorant, started itching, then it got all red and nasty inflamed. Took 3 days to settle down.

@MichaelHampton it's just rhgb

@Tanner Whoa.

@Tanner Yeah, I tried some new deodorant once that had undesirable affects.
Bubbled up my armpits like a blowtorch on plastic wrap.

10:49 PM
@ewwhite Weird, I've never seen it do that without a GUI installed.

only if rhgb is on the boot line

I'm glad I don't have sensitive pits.

depends on how I install...

@Wesley Whoa, mine wasn't that bad.
Just enough to make me think "I either have cancer or Old Spice sucks."

@Tanner Bad enough to make you think you have cancer is still bad enough. =P

10:50 PM
@Wesley Naw, just paranoia. Swollen lymph nodes...

@Tanner Oh yeah that's cancer.

@MatthewIfe Any initial instructions? Or shall we leave it for another day?

Create a test user with the same setup to login with the mview/dbc program.
dont call it testuser ;)

there are plenty of users that can be used. You can su - to them
not sure if I have any of their passwords.

well, you need to change the selinux user mapping for a particular user

10:54 PM
Make it guest / guest

I guess it snot an issue in permissive mode.
run
semanage login -a -s user_u -r s0 <user_to_test_with>
Then restorecon -rv /home/<user_to_test_with>
the v is optional just so you can see whats going on.

anddd I just broke Java on my laptop. rage

cool

@Wesley Reach me at [my first name] @ mrjessen dot com

I'm quite sure that a Private Key is required before you submit your CSR. Because there was a cripplingly annoying fucking bug in IIS if you generated your CSR it would sometimes throw away your Private Key meaning you couldn't use your cert and had to have it re-issued

@MarkHenderson The documentation he has found is wildly misleading
@MarkHenderson Correct, I'm describing it in an update to my answer

@MathiasR.Jessen Done.
@MarkHenderson Wow, yeah, calling that "annoying" is an understatement.
A CSR without a private key isn't exactly a CSR now is it.

11:12 PM
@Wesley If you did it via mmc it would work fine, but generating a manual CSR via the certificates panel is also an exercise in futility
It's much easier to generate a CSR from IIS and then load it

@MathiasR.Jessen Good - toss out a quick and dirty answer with just enough accuracy to stave off the downvotes while you edit it and work on a much more thorough answer. If you're going to play ServerFault, play it to win dammit! =P

@ewwhite Heres my pubkey

@RyJones She certainly sounds like she needs mental health help

I noticed :)

11:30 PM
yes, attached

@MarkHenderson indeed. now I wonder what happened to her

ah...
doesn't run in tmux

@RyJones People like that fade away into obscurity. Once their case is over the media moves on and that's that
I often wonder what happened to people that I heard about a few years ago
But there's never any followup

@MarkHenderson well, sure

@MatthewIfe I want an ø in my name too. :'( Stupid Anglo names.

11:34 PM
heh

Or whatever I have.
@MatthewIfe Well I @'d the wrong Mat, but hey. I'll whine at you too if you'll listen. =P
(@MathiasR.Jessen that was really for you)
@MathiasR.Jessen Can you really be crunk if you have an ø in your name though?

@Wesley I'm not sure I really want to be crunk :P
Here in the north, we drink and go berzerk instead

Dude, that's you on the cover!

@MathiasR.Jessen I've seen that guy get naked and swim under the ice when he's drunk

@MathiasR.Jessen Livers are hard to replace.

11:37 PM
sliding around on the chopped ice, cutting his belly on the chips

@RyJones Yes, a classic non-violent display of berzerkerness :D

@RyJones I was looking for my car keys! =(

@MathiasR.Jessen I support his crazed slidings

Oh boy. Off to pay my datacenter bill.

Now I'm kinda tempted to bottom a bottle of Norwegian Vodka and jump into an icy lake as well
I better go to bed before this escalates

11:47 PM
@MathiasR.Jessen so you know the videos I'm on about then?

@RyJones Oh yes indeed, as I said, a classic non-violent display of berzerkerness
The vodka he drinks (Vikingfjord) is pretty good btw

@MathiasR.Jessen I tried to find it locally, couldn't

Vätch eet en däs Haytch Dee.
