Another good night in the bed. Cute: he always wakes at 6, today he then climbed into our bed. So much better than having him cry for us to lift him out of the cot!
It took an hour to put him to bed though, like Sat evening. But I had expected more like four hours so that's fine.

What should our FAQ contain:
0
A: What should our FAQ contain?

Marie HendrixFor starters, your first sentence leaves me wondering if I should even be a part of this group. My son is now 28 and I have no grandchildren - so I have a very limited parenting role at this time. Just a statement that others that care for and about children are welcome would be more inviting. ...

7:49 AM
We are addressing "anybody with a parenting role". Should we change it to with parenting experience instead? I'm not sure what kind of wording would make Marie happy. She may have a point that parenting role is too narrow - or is it?
I'd like to chat rather than have another comment-ping-pong, but it seems she's not using chat.

I think she does have a point about parenting role being too narrow.
I would like to see something in there about professionals and experts.
What about: "Parenting - Stack Exchange is for parents, grandparents, nannies and others with a parenting role, as well as experts and professionals in fields related to children, child development, and education."?
the "in fields related to" part feels a bit dodgy to me, but I can't think of a better phrasing

That's certainly an improvement! Let me try: Parenting - Stack Exchange is for parents and others with a parenting role, and for professionals that work with children's health and development
There's a teachers proposal; I don't want to include education here up front.
Woo-hoo, I'm at 5k rep! And only 6 measly points away from #1 :-) Not that it matters, but it's fun!
@Beofett I see you're busy again going for that Copy Editor badge ;)
just a hint: would it be more meaningful to ask "what are ..." rather than "are there any..."?

@TorbenGB Congrats! I seem to be in a rep slump, myself...
@TorbenGB good point... I'll change that

@Beofett post more answers then. Each one grants you another ticket in the rep lottery -- you can only win if you play!

and yeah, I've got to make up for time lost over the weekend :P
most of the answers that have come up are either ones I don't have a good answer for, or have gotten such good answers before I even see the question that anything I add would be redundant :P

12:40 PM
I admit that a sizable number of my answers can be attributed to keeping an eye on the new questions. I settled into a habit early on to read every question and almost all answers on the site (I know I can't keep that up forever). Whenever I could contribute something, I did. Sometimes I was typing up a comment and realized hey this might be useful and put it into an answer instead. Sometimes it goes the other way; only useful stuff should be answers.
I even find myself answering on topics I didn't know about before this site existed! Sometimes I've learned it from my son in the meantime, but often I learn from other answers too!

I keep an eye on stuff as much as possible, but I've noticed that most of the recent activity occurs when I'm not online. I'm certainly not shy about answering questions. I just seem to be in a temporary dry spell :P
Up until maybe 2 weeks ago I had been at the top of the rep earned charts for several months, and was fast catching up with you... you've really blown out the lead since then, though!

It's too bad the users page doesn't allow listing per # of answers.
@Beofett Yes you were fast. And as for me, I've got no precise idea what got me up from 2000 rep at May 26 that fast.
I've written as many answers as you and HedgeMage combined, and nearly votes as much as you two combined. I admit this: I am a parenting.SE addict!
"hello my name is Torben and I am a parenting addict."

heh I'm in no position to judge... I keep saying "I can quit parenting SE any time!" yet it never happens :P

I like this title editing spree for the fact that we get to see some of the past content again. There's quite some gold in there, and I'm also seeing that the edited questions attract new users and new votes.
The only side-effect (downside?) I see is that nearly every question will show as edited by a mod, even if it's just title/tag. That didn't use to be the case, and it might send some kind of signal to users. Pro: every Q enjoys mod attention, and the data quality is high. Con: the mods interfere with everything, why can't they leave my contributions alone.
We should ask @AarthiDevanathan about these side-effects -- what's the network-wide feeling of this side-effect? (Aarthi, see earlier comment in this block)
Man I love how one can summon SE staff just like that. I didn't even rub a lamp!

12:55 PM
Is it worth putting a meta question to address the issue, like the CHAOS team members are doing on the sites they are working on?

@TorbenGB You know, I'm not sure. So far, it really hasn't been an issue, but we're working on sites with lots and lots of questions.

Q: Who is Aarthi Devanathan and why is she changing so many posts?

Aarthi Devanathan ΨI'm a StackExchange employee and I'm here to improve the quality of the site. I'm editing question titles to improve their readability and just generally working to make this site even more awesome. If I edit a question title and you don't happen to like it, or you felt it was better the way it ...

Man I love that question. :D

lol

You know what, I'll ask in CHAOS chat!

12:56 PM
please do.

"I, for one, welcome our new forum overlord."
I should sing up in DIY just so I can +1 that comment :P

@Beofett I don't see why NOT! It would show the community WHAT is changing, and WHY, and also give some credit to the WHO that are doing it -- I'm not sure most users know that there's a SE company behind this site.

I say go for it just so you guys are being transparent about the whole thing
which reminds me: unicorn bucks and SE/SO stickers....

:)
oh wait:
----:)

So as per the CHAOS team, we haven't seen a lot of community rebellion against our edit-spree.
That said, though, English.SE has been passive-aggressive about the whole thing =/

1:03 PM
how so?

Just they roll back some of Lauren's edits and leave less-than-professional comments on her meta post.
15
Q: Who is Lauren Ψ and why is she changing posts? (Introducing myself.)

Lauren ΨI just wanted to let you all know that I'm a StackExchange employee and I'm working on improving the English Language site. Basically, that means I'll be correcting things like grammar, spelling, punctuation, and trying to make titles clearer (and represent the actual question better). Of course,...

the edit roll-back we don't really care about
but they've been on her case in English chat about her edits in general. shrug

I hope she's taking it in stride. People have pride and they probably feel interfered with, but it's all in a days' work.
In parenting, we've been kicking up so much dust with our edits that people are still recovering, I guess. I haven't seen a single reaction to the editing. But I have seen much more voting going on, on old questions.

That's good, though, right? It'll help improve the overall quality of your site! :)

Q: Why are the mods editing all the questions?

TorbenGBSome users might notice that nearly all questions have been edited to some extent recently. This meta question exists to explain what is going on. StackExchange (the company who is hosting our site) is actively working to raise the readability of the content. That's a good thing because it gene...

This is what I just came up with. Feel free to edit!

lol beat me to it!

Q: Why are so many old questions getting edited by the moderators all of the sudden?

BeofettIf you've noticed the flood of older questions that are suddenly showing as being recently updated, you may also have noticed that TorbenGB and I have been editing a lot of questions lately. The reason for this is that we are helping with some clean up efforts that are being initiated within the...

1:12 PM
@AarthiDevanathanΨ Sure it's good. It also means a surge of upvotes to users. It's boosted my rep unbelievably. Wasn't my intention, but I'm not complaining.
@Beofett LOL! so which one stays?

@TorbenGB I like yours better, I think

FIGHT TO THE DEATH
aww

plus you got it in first :P

@TorbenGB Hahaha, the fringe benefits of being a proactive mod!
Upvote! :D

@Beofett I'd like you to add whatever you feel relevant from your post, then.
especially the bit about rolling back if they disagree.
and the wording "catch up with earlier content we might have missed"

1:16 PM
@TorbenGB that part was actually flagrantly plagiarized from Aarthi's introduction on DIY :P

I humbly apologize for commending you on content you stole from others who are present ;-)
As a mod, isn't it about time you got yourself a decent avatar?
decent, said the guy with a fake notification counter. Tee hee!

I've edited to add some stuff from my question
@TorbenGB yeah, yeah... I keep planning on getting around to it :P
however, the number of "generics" like me in the Teacher's Lounge encouraged me to continue slacking off :P

speaking of voting, can we do something about this one? Promote to policy, or edit until happy?
3
Q: Policy for voting

TorbenGBNote: this is tagged "draft" until at least the mods have had a chance to review it. This community wiki defines the policy that users can refer to when deciding if a contribution merits a vote. This will ensure that high-quality answers that have community support bubble to the top. Upvote ...

1:30 PM
@TorbenGB I am happy with it as-is

Thanks! I've removed the draft tag from it.

Yeah, I agree; it looks good to me. fwiw. :)

It's worth a lot! We needed that policy back when there was so much yelling going on about how people voted. Now we can just point here and end the discussion. Makes me wonder how many other policy topics there could be, and whether we could shamelessly steal them from sister sites.

I, for one, would never shamelessly steal content from our sister sites!
(unless it saved me a couple of keystrokes or other trivial effort)

Morning folks

1:44 PM
@Davy8 Good morning

Hi Davy!

This is my first time actually chatting here while others aren't afk :p
(I suppose it's also the first time that it's not like 2am in the morning)
How's it going?

@Davy8 It's funny: sometimes, days pass without any action. At other times, there's so much going on that it's hard to keep up.
@Davy8 Excellent, thank you! My son (22months) is sleeping in a BED since 2 nights ago, no problems. Hadn't expected it to go so easy, but it can change :-D And you?

Heh, I sometimes try to keep up with what's going on, but sometimes I just don't bother. I'm one of those people with a million tabs open though so I've had this tab open for the past week at least
nice, our baby's sleeping a little better now, she's starting to smile occasionally which is really coool :D

pinned tabs are awesome!
@Davy8 it gets even better! You can't imagine what it does to you when you come home and you're greeted with a cheer and a smile.

1:47 PM
@Davy8 How old is she?

I don't even have it pinned, I used them for a little bit after I found out about them, but then I just don't ever close half my tabs anyway
17 days (I suppose I could've just said about 2.5 weeks instead of doing the math :p

back in an hour talk to you later!

bye @TorbenGB

@Davy8 congratulations!

Thanks :)

1:50 PM
@TorbenGB ttyl
those first smiles are great, aren't they?

yeah
stalks @Beofett so Parenting looks like your most active SE site, I'm always curious what other sites active users are on

I'm on DIY at the moment. Hi, I'm Aarthi. Nice to meet you!

@Davy8 Parenting is definitely my current addiction :) Skeptics is lots of fun, but I browse more often than participate there

Ha, narwhals.

Ha, platypus!
That's 4 pages of edits done...
almost half of them!

1:58 PM
Hi Aarathi from CHAOS (your symbol thing doesn't show up in chat anymore it seems)
yeah, I browse skeptics a fair amount but haven't contributed anything yet

@Davy8 I noticed that, too. It seems that the avatar shows a short version for only 1 or 2 lines of chat, but expands if the person has a larger section of chat

Alas! I love my pitchfork.
Hmm.
So if I keep typing into the chatbox...

ah there it goes

Eventually I'll be pitchforky again!
nice :)
Good job, dev guys!

2:01 PM
indeed

@Beofett dude best steve carell moment evar

haha the timing of that made me thing "indeed" was some kind of easter egg that linked a video
*think

@AarthiDevanathanΨ I've been looking for the right time to drop that link ever since people started calling the CHAOS psi a trident :P

I kinda miss chats, haven't really chatted much since my teens years on AOL
I said I'd try hanging out in Gaming chat, but I haven't been back in months

2:03 PM
@Davy8 Ugh, I was traumatized by AOL chat

AIM for me; I was the post-chatroom generation of internet users.

(coincidentally I just barely made top 2 pages in Rep in gaming and got my t-shirt and other SE swag about a week ago :D)

my cousin introduced me to it by putting me into a rather sketchy chatroom on her account, and typed "Hi, I'm a horny girl!" before handing me the keyboard and saying "check out AOL chat!"

hahaha

@Davy8 congrats!

2:05 PM
@Beofett I imagine that would be a little traumatizing

@Beofett or simply a great story ;)

or both

both! win-win!

Well, I should get ready for work, was nice chatting with you (it feels odd to use "you" in the plural without any qualification, even though it's supposed to be proper)
maybe that's a question for english.se

laughs
be careful what you ask there! ;)

2:12 PM
English is probably the SE where I waste the most time
I spend a disproportionate amount of time there learning about stuff that I don't really care about and probably won't ever use

...Parenting for me? :D

I probably should lurk there a bit more often
and nice chatting with you, too, @Davy8. Congratulations again on your daughter!

I like Personal Productivity.
It's kind of meta.

@AarthiDevanathanΨ I haven't even glanced at that yet. I'm now torn: on the one hand, its another time sink, but on the other, I can rationalize it by claiming it will increase my productivity!

@Beofett you've gotta do a cost/benefit analysis wrt your time and its value. a sunk cost in this case could provide some positive ROI. :)

2:56 PM
@Davy8 did you know: you can hit the up arrow for a chance to edit your last message. This chat system is full of neat tricks like that.
Hi all, I'm back from the eye doctor (what's the english word again?) They dropped something in my eyes, now my pupils are wildly diluted. I can only read this chat because I've zoomed like 400%.
Thank goodness for touch-typing skills. I can't read the letters on the keyboard.
@Beofett great parenting material :-D
This is the win! So funny: I'm at work but I'm physically not able to read my emails. They're right in front of me, mocking me, and Lotus Notes reminders too. But I can't read what they remind me on!

3:35 PM
@TorbenGB optometrist is the technical term, iirc. also, i think you mean dilated. i assume your pupils are wide, not at a lower concentration ;)
@TorbenGB imho, that's as good an excuse as any for a long lunch ;)

yes, dilated it is.
A long lunch, at 17:30? I'd say that's pretty long! Anyway, I am not able to work any more today so I'll just head home. Glad I don't have to drive! But I also can't play with my phone during the commute. I need an iPhone with a 19" display.

@TorbenGB catnap on le train! :D
well
or creepily stare at other passengers. That's not, like, weird or anything right?
Although, people-watching can be quite entertaining.

it would be if I could see them.

they don't know you can't! ;)

4:04 PM
foodstime! /waves~
