what does ringing a bell have to do with it?
is that a reference to arranged marriage or something? what am I missing?

@jokerdino Bleh, it asks for Username and password when I do that
How do I make it push over SSH ?
Or am I being stupid

@HackToHell git push ssh://github.com/gowtham/mynoobproject

@jokerdino ....

> (can I call you Gowthie?)

@allquixotic No no. the only time shy folks get to talk with anyone from the opposite sex.

5:00 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy LOL

@HackToHell you can do that. or switch to ssh

@jokerdino OIC. LOL
I don't even have any cousins -_-

@jokerdino let's not talk about those, now!
Gowthie is trying to learn!

>>> Quora please!

@allquixotic Nope :/

@HackToHell on windows?

Nope, Ubuntu

5:03 PM
@allquixotic You probably already distracted him by calling him "Gowthie"

@HackToHell got ssh-askpass running?

!! tell jokerdino no

@HackToHell That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

@allquixotic googles

@jokerdino i wonder if he likes his cousin

man i am just evil today

lol
@HackToHell: anyway, just push over https and enter your username and password
afterwards, you can edit the remote

or use the github app or the sourcetree app which will remember your password for you

git remote add origin <ssh-url>

@allquixotic it seems to be running

5:05 PM
@HackToHell got your private key as ~/.ssh/id_rsa and perms set to 600?

@allquixotic aye
@jokerdino I'll try that

i think there's a bug that broke ssh-askpass on recent ubuntu for some reason
i remember hitting that

no idea about that bug.
haven't been on ubuntu for a good amount of period now.

@jokerdino It works !
I just figured out how to commit manually ;D

Cheers
We will be using git for our project btw.
(whenever we get started that is ;p)

5:15 PM
lol

@jokerdino *probably never
most software projects never reach beta (90%+)

Thank you for your highly encouraging statement :/

how many of them remain just an idea?

@HackToHell sorry :(
it's ok, you'll do great ;p
beat the odds!

And since I'm done with git for today :P gizmodo.com/…
Google Now is kinda dumb
@allquixotic :D

5:19 PM
@allquixotic Ironically, most of my possessions and achievements were either effortlesly given to me, or result of luck and chance. My tuition was all paid by relatives. My own (small, one-room) apartment is inherited. Damn, half of my furniture was given to me by random people. My father gave my two sofas, and two neighbours just showed up randomly and said "Hey I have this TV rack / bed table here, do you want it"?

@ThatBrazilianGuy D: well i feel kinda the same way, a lot has been given to me :P
just about the only thing i've REALLY earned is a modicum of success at my job

And everyone in my class has a gf except me

@HackToHell doubtful that it's truly everyone

I find it funny :P
@allquixotic There are 8 guys >.<

@HackToHell and how many women?

5:21 PM
You tell me you are the lucky one?

@jokerdino YES :D
I get to spend more time sleeping

@HackToHell it's ok, I went through all of high school and college single

@allquixotic 31 :O

@HackToHell ...ALONE!!! buwahahahaha

@allquixotic Even getting hired was a matter of "Hey, there's this opening. Only 4 positions open, 40 candidates per position. Let's try. Zero study. HEY! I PASSED!" I saw it on twitter, for god's sake.

5:22 PM
@allquixotic "women".

@HackToHell wow. RLY.
@jokerdino this is college, I'm assuming they're over 18. so, women, not girls
@ThatBrazilianGuy :D

@allquixotic It's bloody boring, I can't bunk classes cause there are so few boys and my profs know my name :'(

for some people, opportunity comes to them. for some others, they have to make herculean efforts to find even modest opportunities
for the latter i swear i will help them all i can if i ever have the means

@allquixotic I only wanted to highlight how that choice of word sounded quite peculiar.

@jokerdino why does it sound peculiar to you? it sounds fine to me
females or girls sounds even more peculiar to me

5:24 PM
I feel that besides getting good grades, I haven't achieved much because of my efforts, because to be honest I don't recall any significat effort apart from having to study during my school years.

@ThatBrazilianGuy get more rep on SU :D

@allquixotic 'ladies' perhaps? women are restricted to the professors.

@ThatBrazilianGuy In many ways the internet has ruined me, I can't study something these days without knowing how it will help me

@allquixotic females i can agree with.

@jokerdino it sounds the opposite here. ladies sounds old :P
ladies = 60 y.o. walking dog with sun glasses and fanny pouch in public park.

5:26 PM
fanny pouch? O_O

women = image here
@jokerdino a small wearable bag with a buckle that is fastened to the waist and has various things, perhaps phone, perhaps keys, perhaps wallet
they are associated with older people in the U.S.

IDK man. Fanny meant something else in SG.

SG?

Even the day I was invited by a "rockstar" front-end dev to give a speech on a fancy conference was because of a fake twitter profile I had created on a bored day, so it was just coincidence and sincronicity, not exactly earned by hard work

So 'fanny pouch' was just weird terminology.

@allquixotic where JMG lives? SG ~ Singapore

@allquixotic Singapore

oh
i thought that was a state in India D:
because why would you be talking about the place where the dog lives, when you live in India
i knew SG = Singapore country code, but didn't think it relevant

@ThatBrazilianGuy oh ok, I'l have to remember to use that instead
and have blank stares

5:29 PM
@allquixotic English in SH was probably different from the English used in India

!!tell 14974281 yes

> and have blank "eeeew" stares

Now what were we talking about?

@allquixotic wearing fanny pouches

5:32 PM
the 8 guys and 34 girls women in H2H's class?

@jokerdino Now what's he studying? Arts?

@ThatBrazilianGuy ok yeah. fanny meant the bushy parts.
@ThatBrazilianGuy Engineering

Information Technology or something similar.

Wow. India is... different.

5:34 PM
It's IT

why does @HackToHell not ask out of the 31 women in his class ....
(hint: same reason I didn't)

@allquixotic They might find him too geeky for studying IT.

> too geeky
> studying IT
!!no

@allquixotic Which is ?
@jokerdino What happend to you gf and all

5:41 PM
oh what what?

@HackToHell Forever Alone Guy.

@allquixotic look of disapproval
@jokerdino no ?

@HackToHell them women are out-of-bounds, yo
society is constructed with virtual address space assigned to each person
if you try to access physical memory outside your VAS, you get terminated for making an illegal access

lol

5:44 PM
trust me, i asked the kernel what would happen if i try to dereference a pointer to memory in a girl's virtual address space
i would be sent away never to be heard from again and my PID would be recycled
the worst fate imaginable

@allquixotic ..... nerd level : Forever alone

also, all the UNIX domain sockets under /var/girls are 660, and I'm not the user or in the group mask

although I have been known to gain read-only access once in a while through intermediaries like prn0 eth0

LOL

It appears I've overestimated my own level of nerdiness..

What's the name of that public proxy software?

5:48 PM
@Boris_yo tor

@Boris_yo which will get you flagged if used improperly ?

i need to make the big $$$$$, it's the only way for me to make so many $s that my shell becomes a # and I can bypass the discretionary permissions on /var/girls
then I can perform IPC on the domain socket of my choosing, masks be damned
it's the only way for those of us users who aren't in the uid/gid mask

@allquixotic odin

just got an idea for next year's SE april fools from my typo in the url address bar

The problem with women is that although the hardware is so gorgeous, the software has no manual and uses a cryptic programming language

5:52 PM
they should advertise tackexchange.com in the sidebar of the main sites, and set up that site as a place for users to share pictures of their tacks and barter them for other peoples' tacks

I'd be more favorable to tacoexchange.

@ThatBrazilianGuy yeah the hardware is awesome but the software is coded in brainf***

Sleepexchange anyone ?

@ThatBrazilianGuy how do you feel around pretty Brazilian girls?

and all native code has to be signed and encrypted using AES

5:54 PM
@allquixotic I find it a interesting challenge to try and decrypt that

also, they ship to you out of the box with no shell access, a case alarm and no way to reset the firmware

@jokerdino I feel like I'm better be staring at the ground or the lady at home will kick my @$$

Somehow forums learned to block proxies...

@allquixotic Jo hablo portuñol y un piquitito de bullshitación.
@Boris_yo Yeah, there's this IP thing

@ThatBrazilianGuy So all proxies in the world are blocked?

@ThatBrazilianGuy lol

6:08 PM
Every time I see the "No." cat, i feel like there should be a mouse-over referencing Wilford Brimley

@Boris_yo They might detect proxies using "x-forwarded-for", so totally trasparent proxies won't get blocked. They can build a blacklist for those, but it would have to be on a per-IP basis.

6:21 PM
This one seems serious

G'morning. I'm Wilford Brimley, and I'd like to talk to you for a few minutes about `<women>`. Actually, about `<women>`, and how they've affected me in my life. I'll start when I was first introduced. I was scared to death, I was experiencing symptoms that were strange, and uh, uh, unfamiliar to me. For instance, I had an unquenchable desire; my tongue felt like a horseshoe rasp; I was losing my vision; I was losing my energy; uh... I was getting it up every 15 or 20 minutes all through the night; I wasn't getting any rest; and as a result of all these things, I lost all my energy. And I w

Hello lovelys
@allquixotic my goto help guy! :P
can I dd to multiple outputs in a single command?
dd if=image.bin | tee >(dd of=/dev/sdc) | >(dd of=/dev/sdf) | dd of=/dev/sdh
nvm, I think this will work

!!tell 14976005 no

tee is it, yes
try it with regular files first before dd eats your data

it is a clone of a sd card already, need to clone it to more cards
my card reader can read three cards, so i'm trying to write to all in a single command

somehow this sounds like you're standing up your grain boxes
grain brain ;p

6:49 PM
sudo dd bs=1MB if=image.bin | tee >(dd of=/dev/sdf) | >(dd of=/dev/sdd) | dd of=/dev/sdb
permission denied on all drives, then asks me for sudo pw :P

@rlemon because only the first dd is running under sudo?
sudo bash then do the rest without sudo

nope

"nope" what?

permission denied on two drives, last one copied 66kb of 4gb

er...

6:52 PM
i'll just run three commands. screw it
ahh shit
can't
stops the other dd before proceeding on the first
wtf?

wait, why are you using more than one dd if you're only doing one drive at a time?
dd if=image.bin of=/dev/sdf

I want to write 3 drives at once

just write a 4 line script then
#!/bin/bash
dd if=image.bin of=/dev/sdf &
dd if=image.bin of=/dev/sdd &
dd if=image.bin of=/dev/sdb &
the extra reads won't hit the HDD because of page cache, so the second and third dd will just read the blocks of image.bin from RAM

> dd if=image.bin of=/dev/sdf &
then
> dd if=image.bin of=/dev/sdd &
and it kills the first process ;)
i'll write a bash script
brb coffee

what kills the first process? OH... maybe your card reader only lets you access one drive at a time
that'd be stupid, but wouldn't put it past the MMIO guys

@allquixotic rofl

Saw it on the Smashing Magazine facebook feed

Quick question: can I use a single stick of RAM in a mini-itx motherboard? There are 2 RAM slots but do I have to put a RAM stick in each one? (If yes, then I do understand that they need to be same size etc) Thanks!

@TorbenGundtofte-Bruun you can always run on one stick of RAM

@TorbenGundtofte-Bruun No, you don't HAVE to do anyof those things. For best performance, they are factors though

there isn't and has never been a requirement to use more than one stick of RAM in any system I know of

7:17 PM
thank you! Then I'm fine.
@allquixotic I know several systems where the sticks needed to be matched in pairs. It's been too long since I last tinkered with hardware so I'd have to look it up, but I've owned several different systems like that.
I'm glad I don't have to do that now, though - because I only bought 1 stick of RAM by mistake :)

@TorbenGundtofte-Bruun I did say "that I know of"... but modern systems certainly don't have that requirement, even if older systems did... by "modern" I mean typical Intel or AMD x86_64 systems (form factor doesn't make a difference)
and I know what system you have so I know yours isn't at all constrained by having to slot RAM in pairs

@allquixotic Disclaimer is noted :)
thanks again, gotta run!

Q: Why does RAM need to be installed in pairs?

short answer: it doesn't

Q: List of OpenID authorized sites

That Brazilian GuyI have used my Stack Exchange account to login to a third-party site. Upon doing so, I was asked to authorize it to use my OpenID credentials from Stack Exchange. Going to http://openid.stackexchange.com/ I can change my password, but not see a list of places that I have granted access, and more...

@ThatBrazilianGuy o_O

@allquixotic ...what?

@ThatBrazilianGuy just as I said. vacant, unsure eyes where one is a different size than the other

Oh, so you just want me to appreciate your emoticon-making skills?

7:53 PM
Does anyone know how to change the localized Google search version on Chrome's new tab page?
Like, I still get the Austrian one, but want the German one.

@allquixotic Surely the long answer is "it d.....o.........e........s.......n.........'.........t (unless you have a very old computer)(but installing them in pairs/triples/quadruples can make your computer faster)"

No, it is "It doesn't. It used to, but not anymore, but it can make your computer faster, depending on your mother board".
@slhck ...Google for ostriches?
2
They sure are diversifying!

@ThatBrazilianGuy "or not so much the motherboard these days, since it now really depends on your processor"

@ThatBrazilianGuy :P

@Mokubai OK, you win -_-

7:57 PM
@Mokubai Whatever, I stopped building desktop PCs more than 6 years ago

@ThatBrazilianGuy I didn't!

@ThatBrazilianGuy ^_^ likewise, my last 3 compy purchases were Dell high-midrange PCs
@allquixotic On another note... How've you been? Been a while...

Just today a (foreign) coworker asked me if it was hard for me to move to Germany, because she thought the flight was 20hrs.. Turns out she thought I came from Australia.

@Mokubai good enough. you?

8:07 PM
@slhck LOL
so "al" are your least favorite letters of the alphabet, especially joined together in that sequence? @slhck

@allquixotic can't complain (they'll get me if I do)

@allquixotic You could say so.
We also once had a package sent from France to Vienna, Australia.

-_-
i only know Vienna from philosophy class; from Vampire: The Masquerade (game); and from "Vienna Fingers", yummy cookies

@allquixotic I've got Vampire: The Masquerade, keep meaning to play it. Is it any good?
First World Problem: I have so many games that I literally have no idea what I want to play...

@Mokubai great story, bad game mechanics

8:13 PM
@allquixotic Fair enough, sums up a lot of my fave games to be honest
"the gameplay was lacklustre at best, but damn if I didn't just love the story"

Q: Are there any policy security reverse proxy servers?

john_the_bastardIn ages past, there was Apache mod_security. But mod_security was not GPL compatible, and mod_security2 came along, and it was good. @slhck I can hear it in Morgan Freemans voice!

@Mokubai Haha, I was gonna say…

We don't migrate questions to SR as it's still in beta (cc @heavyd). To be honest, it would help if you wrote this in plain English. Non-native speakers might have a hard time understanding this. I would say that this question can remain open provided you rewrite this post and clearly states which problem needs to be tackled and what has been done to solve it. — slhck ♦ 3 mins ago
my oh my, it almost sounded like the start of a famous @slhck rant about keeping things on SU
good thing heavyd isn't in chat
something makes me wonder if "we don't migrate questions to beta sites" is a hard and fast rule, or just a policy of some moderators

@allquixotic No, I don't particularly care about this one. It's just that SR are very much against having questions migrated to them IIRC

8:22 PM
wow, they're against having questions migrated to them? that's.... a bit surprising, but their choice

Last time I checked they were.

heh, maybe they have such low confidence that their site is going to graduate from beta that they just want to keep questions from coming over since the site is just going to get canned :P

The point is that the community should grow organically, not from having questions migrated from all other sites to them. Also because of their rules.
(Which are a little bit more strict than just, "ask for a recommendation")

I VTC'ed unclear... if it gets put on hold, that's fine, because we always just reopen it if the OP happens to edit it so that it's clear and topical

@slhck Seems odd, but I can see a little logic, maybe they don't want the constant flux of all the hundreds of questions that come in every second across SE and all bear a vague resemblance to "can you find me software X?"

A: Should beta-sites be listed for migration suggestions?

YannisI'm stealing Tim Post's answer from a related question on Meta Programmers: we don't establish migration paths to a site that is still in its beta period. We don't want to send content from one site to another unless we're certain that the target site is a permanent fixture. There are excepti...

A: What would be our stop gap for other sites to migrate over question?

FlykI see no reason with allowing the site to be used as a migration path for the entire network as required, provided the content that is migrated over here meets our requirements - many of the one to two line questions that get asked on other sites are simply so far off the pace of what we're descr...

7
A: Should we migrate questions from other SE sites?

Nick WildeHere's a really great single word answer... Sometimes For that particular question No The general rules I'd say should be: No: Anything older than the normal migration limits (that question) Anything that doesn't match SR (that question - it is for a service not a software, see: Are hosting ...

So generally, no, unless it's high quality for them. Since I don't participate on SR, I don't know what kind of questions they like, so I'm pretty much against migrating things there. If someone is an SR regular and flags, "hey, we'd like this question!", then maybe.

yeah, I get where they're coming from; I was very active on that site during the early going, though not so much now... looks like a sensible policy

@slhck Shouldn't it be migrated then put on hold as 'more info required'?
(assuming the migration is allowed in the first place)

if that SU question posted above were asked without all the fanciful Norse-themed allegories and such, I'd have possibly at least gone over to the SR chat and asked them if they maybe would want the question and if it meets their guidelines... reason being, I'm struggling to understand how that question could be worded to be topical for SU, and non-topical questions are going to be closed here for obvious reasons
this isn't a case of promoting another site, just a case of -- well, if the question is good enough for them, and it's unequivocably going to be closed here, then there's little enough resistance to migration to... do it.
'course they are more than welcome to say "no, that's crap, keep it away", at which point it'd just be closed and sit on SU
the nice part about that process is, we on SU don't exactly have to understand their policies and procedures in order to migrate properly; we just have to ask them about it -- and there aren't enough good quality SR-suitable questions asked on SU that it would be a significant burden to them to ask about 1 question every few days
(the bad ones, we just close :D)

@allquixotic Yeah, true.
In any case, the thing is.. if the problem is such a special-case that you can only get a limited set of answers, then it's fine, IMO
Anyway, I've got to go. See you all.
