Q: Black patches in glass when using cycles render engine

user2620255for some reason i am getting these black patches all around my image. it seems to be most obvious where certain sections overlap slightly, but i have no idea how to fix them (very new to blender o.o) im not sure why this is happening. heres a version where the points im referencing are circled ...

OMG! Today I discovered that "dog food lid" spelled backwards is "Dildo of God".

I can only assume this means God has a very, very peculiar hidden sense of humor. I mean, what other conclusion can be drawn??

This also brings up an even more stirring issue, namely, "What other travesties of human misperception lie all around us?!?" Any given object, when perceived in just the right way, could be discovered to be God's next big joke for us all!

O.o

@gandalf3 Your video of the particle trail here
http://gfycat.com/OddGiganticArctichare#
reminds me of the Jericho Missile from the first Iron Man movie. If you were to use a keyed particle system, you could have them emit from a rocket launcher and then home in on the target
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBC1Qob27sM
:)
I keep thinking it'd be neat to try to remake some of the Iron Man scenes like that one, or maybe the one where he takes out the tank with is missile:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FNn6IlhQtc
using a tank model, iron man model, a nice explode modifier and some smoke+fire physics...it seems doable and would probably look pretty cool
:D

Iron Man may be closer than we suspected...

@gandalf3 I did not know shading caused vblack spots, weird

Q: get Edge / Vertex / Face from mouse position

zeffiiCan I get from bpy which (if any) vertex / edge / face is currently under the mouse cursor? This would be quite useful for making more modeling tools. Right now what I have to do is, maybe utterly stupid and wasteful on my part, use a selection list and update it when new valid edges are added t...

Q: Can't change to smooth shading

BlenderSharkI am building a car engine and I want to set it to smooth shading. But for some reason it does not work. Has anyone an idea how to fix that? Here you can download the .blend file.

Q: Blurry screen in Blender

JuanI'm new here, my name is Juan, I have a problem running Blender (2.69) with the screen that gets blurry when I move the mouse, here is a pic, I have a Nvidia Geforce 9500GT with a resolution of 1360 x 768 Please help me

@vader @gandalf3 @iklshr @charlesL Hey guys, what does this guy do to get the inset faces to happen on all 6 faces at once in the very beginning...I can't figure it out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoACoYGfwzo

@Vader Hey! Thanks!

4:23 PM
no problem

And how did he then get the extrude to be on individual rather than region without going through a menu?
is there a preference that has to be set?

@ what time?

Alt E

if you want some rep points, tell me how to ask it formally without referring to the offsite video and you can get some points
I know alt e, but then that brings up a menu for me where I can then choose Region, INdividual, Edge Only, etc

4:30 PM
Idk how he does it without a menu
maybe he assigen a shorctu for it

oh...
ooo, that's a good question, I'm going to ask it now...

I know how he did it now

Q: How do I find the technical name for a function so I can assign a hotkey to it?

Thom Blair IIII'd like to assign hotkeys to certain actions, like for example "Extrude Individual Faces"? Is there a list of all possible commands somewhere?

ok, go for it!

uhh I would ask how he did it

what do you mean?
can I refer to a youtube video in a question?

4:34 PM
ask a more specific question
sure add a screenshot of it though

but it's a video clip, rather than just a still shot that I'd need to embed...can I embed a video clip in a question?

you could make a gif

I've never made an animated gif before

use camtasia, export as gif

4:37 PM
oh, ok.
these are the only export formats I see under Share -> Advanced Export

update camtasia
btw they guy did it with
i -> i -> Ctrl Drag

4:55 PM
oh, ok, I'll try that
I'm also updating camtasia now...thanks
ok, cool, thanks, I got
i -> i -> Ctrl Drag
to work.

good

but, I can't figure out how to find the export as gif option...I have a screen recording that's ~6 seconds long on the timeline, then I go to Share -> then what?
even after it updated

what version?

Camtasia 2 ver. 2.7.1 (87997) for Mac

I am using version 8.3.0

5:08 PM
!!!
uh, windows or mac?

windows

huh, I wonder if they're different....I know that outlook for windows has different features than outlook for mac...
how'd you get 8.3?
should I try to update again?

idk, updates

it says I'm up to date...are you using camtasia 2 or 1?

doesn't say
its not either

5:10 PM
hmm, then maybe it's camtasia 1

it's the newest

I just bought downloaded & bought mine like 3 months ago...
? :|

maybe it a mac issue

huh...what's your menu path to export as gif?
Share -> ???

share -> gif

5:19 PM
looks like the mac version doesn't have this feature:
https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/please_add_export_to_animated_gif_to_camtasia_mac
this's all I've got
maybe I'll try screencast.com

huh, they must have very different production teams for mac & windows

maybe

man, camtasia crashes every time I try to log in to Screencast.com

5:36 PM
oh well

yeah, bummer

6:31 PM
@Vader @ThomBlairIII It's II (pressing i twice)

I know

oh

I figured it our
i never do it like that though

6:59 PM
@Vader It seems to be something about adjacent faces with dramatically different normals.

@gandalf3 do you have the test scene still? if nto that's fine as well

No

okay

I don't :/
It's a very simple setup though

yeah some text

7:04 PM
wait
I might have an autosave
Nope..

its fine
@gandalf3 did you vote to reopen the nvidia question?

Q: Using joint angles to animate a character

efxI work on modeling of human locomotion, I have a physical model of walking that runs on a gazebo like software (ODE based). I extracted the joint angles of a walking cycle in a file and want to use that to animate a body in blender. I have an already rigged model in blender and I would like to a...

@Vader No. It's another one of those automated reopen votes.

how does that happen?

Q: How to run a python script at regular intervals?

gandalf3Is it possible to run a script every few seconds or so, while letting the interface update in the meantime? How can I do this?

2 hours later…
9:41 PM

@stacker ...that is very abstract...a bike wheel...?

yes

I take it you're modeling one?

just for fun

is that your bike?

9:42 PM
no it is a random one found by google

oh...my Dad loves bikes so I know a bit more about them then most people probably do unless they're also into bikes
why did you upload it?

Oops I forgot to ask the question?!

yep, if you upload an image, it won't upload text too at the same time

How could I extrude the spikes from the rim?

do you have a blend file, I'll show you
actually, your best bet is not to extrude them from teh rim, but to model them seperately and then join them to the rim
that'd be MUCH easier

9:45 PM
The blend is just a torus and a few cylinders

just make one spoke
then duplicate it with ALT+D

there is some symmetry but nothing I could rotate (as I had expected)

ok, do you have one spoke made yet?

I was thinking using just a scaled cube,

what I would do would be to make one and then move the origin point to the point where the spokes overlap
are you in a rush now or do you have time for me to do a screencast for you?
or do you want to just do it over chat

9:49 PM
@all has anyone signed up for the gooseberry project?

not me

@stacker What about an array modifier on a single spoke?

@ThomBlairIII don't bother I will try cubes

With a rotated empty as an object offset

@gandalf3 I don't understand the pattern:

9:54 PM
Oh
Idk then..

I know how to do it, it's not that hard

Oops
g2g
o/

o/

I can make a quick screencast if you want stacker

g2g also @thom thanks it was just playing around
@ThomBlairIII I already have these images, I could post this as question tomorrow o/

9:58 PM
ok, I'll try to make an answer in picture style and have it ready

10:22 PM
@stacker the spokes are made of sets of these four spokes
you can join the four spokes with CTRL+J
then while in object mode, set the origin to the center of the wheel hub
where the gimbal is in the picture above
and then you can use an array modifier or just duplicate the set enough times
hey guys!
@charlesL @vader hey guys, do either of you want to play around with a rigged dragon model?
I've got one

10:40 PM
oh?

it's alduin from skyrim
do you want it?
5MB
I never got around to doing his face or toes, but the rest is pretty good
this is the flamethrower I was going to use for his breathing fire
made from Andrew's flamethrower tutorial
I never got around to putting the two of them together
my computer is too slow to render the fire in high resolution anyway
@charles did you take a look yet?

one sec
sorry

np
no rush
:D

hmm...
it's just a rhombus

are you referring to the spokes?

10:48 PM
ack
nvm
I don't know what happened before
whoa dude.
that is awesome

knowing what happened before is very difficult in many instances

were did you get the model?

nice rig!

you can get the texture map from that file

10:50 PM
cool

thanks

I'll check that out later
I g2g right now
:D
o/

ok see ya

11:08 PM
did you know...if you press iii, I appear!
XD
(I'm Thom Blair III)

11:43 PM
this flamethrower is big enough though for a dragon
