@JNK yeah. i was hoping that you'd explain that to @Zane so that your statement didnt just linger like a stale fart.

JNK
i.e. this delete runs in the background and they are still adding more records to the table

@JNK sounds like he is

JNK
that could cause fragmentation potentially depending on what values he is inserting in the middle of the index

@Zane since it's not paid support we're supposed to give bad "advise"

JNK
and it could also be just because the engine isnt' reusing that empty page space because of key order or something else
this is really at the edge of my understanding though so I could be wrong
I understand pages and whatnot but once we start talking about how the engine maintains stuff I get out of my depth

6:01 PM
@JNK I think he's doing a BULK insert then DELETEing the same number of rows.

JNK
@Zane well then of course the indexes will grow
you're adding data and not filling in the old stuff

and since he's sending so many DELETE statements it's not removing the space from the deleted rows.
Don't have enough information to confirm yet.

@JNK but conceptually the OP doesnt understand that

JNK
Honestly I think the answer for him is gonna be to get through this process and do a reindex

@Zane yes it is. I need to get going here, so will pick this back up in the morning. — aaroncatlin 1 min ago

6:04 PM
insert is happening in the same package

Yeah!
We were all right!

Say what????
> "Global" variables as such do not exist in SQL Server,
1
A: Scope of @@ variable in TSQL

BBlakeAny time you pass SQL Server a GO command, that ends the context in which the variable exists and it is no longer accessible by anything after that point in the T-SQL code. "Global" variables as such do not exist in SQL Server, but there are ways around it, generally by implementing a global var...

He's right. Variables exist within the session that uses them. When you declare GO in SSMS, it is a batch seperator
2

I'm listening...

@FreshPrinceOfSO What do you think a "global" variable is?

6:08 PM
So it basically ends the context of that session.

@AaronBertrand it's available throughout the session
@MikeFal ah that makes ¢

JNK
yeah they don't AFAIK

@MikeFal I'm not a huge fan of making a global variable table. I feel there are other ways to deal with that issue.

OP has my upvote

@FreshPrinceOfSO how does that differ from a "local" variable?

JNK
6:09 PM
I hate globals

@AaronBertrand another connection can use it?

He needs to clarify wording.
@FreshPrinceOfSO Do you mean a global temporary table? There's no such thing as a global variable.

JNK
I have a legacy PS contraption I help maintain and am going to rewrite that sets tons of global vars for state tracking

@AaronBertrand i've been living a lie my whole life

I think I've only used global temp tables once or twice, primarily for some multi-db batch job with a transient report output.

6:10 PM
I don't run across many scenarios where a global variable would be necessary and if it is chances are an SSIS package may make more sense in that context anyways.

JNK
Global temp tables seem pretty useless to me too
They only persist as long as they are accessed, so conceivably the sessions accessing them are related and you can pass data around in another way anyways

@JNK not useless, but useful in very specific scenarios

@JNK There are very few use cases.
@MikeFal Can't think of any where you couldn't also use a permanent table in its place.

JNK
@AaronBertrand can you give me an example?

@JNK need different sessions to have access to the same transient data. For example, I create a #temp table then need to shell out to xp_cmdshell or sqlcmd and have it reference that transient data. Could do that with a permanent table, too, of course.

6:14 PM
@AaronBertrand Yeah, I'd say most of the time you'd want a perm table. As stated before, the only time I did was a multi-db batch job that I need a temp reporting table (perm was to much hassle) and I had nested dynamic sql code blocks
Which is not to say there wasn't a better way to do it. :)

@MikeFal how did you keep two different sessions from accessing the same data?

JNK
@AaronBertrand that makes sense

@MikeFal not sure what hassle there is with a permanent table.

@AaronBertrand I don't recall, honestly. I wrote it a year or two back, I don't really remember why's there, just that was the way I did. :)

You can store the variable in an SSIS package and pass it through to as many execute SQL tasks as you want. If that sort of thing is up your alley. — Zane 6 secs ago
Edited that comment to give it more pizzazz.

6:25 PM
election ends in 1 hour ... you excited @bluefeet ?

@FreshPrinceOfSO of course

JNK
@FreshPrinceOfSO really thats an SO hour, so 90 minutes

Q: Can the election countdown be fixed?

Raghav SoodThis has been bothering me for a while. The election countdown doesn't seem to care much for half hours. For example, as of posting of this question, there are one and a half hours till the election gets over. However, the countdown reads 1 hour. Could this be made accurate to at least half hour...

JNK

Q: Countdown timer is off by 1 interval

Scott ChamberlainI tried to choose a answer for a question on SA and someone immediately answered with the correct response. I try to click the check box and it says wait 2 min. I keep clicking until it changes from 2 min to 1 min. I wait 60 seconds on my watch and click again and it says please wait 59 seconds. ...

@bluefeet Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease go mad with power.

6:32 PM
@MikeFal red wedding style?

A @bluefeet always pays her debts?

@MikeFal glad you GOT that reference

@bluefeet Yeah, well I read all those books a while back. I actually have never seen the series.
Mostly because when I heard Sean Bean had been cast as Ned Stark, I was very sad because I knew what the result was going to be.

@MikeFal I watched the series first, I am actually reading the first book now. damn they are long

Yes, and unfortunately GRRM suffers from Robert Jordan-ism. He needs to tighten up the story.

6:35 PM
Reading old VB code is fun sometimes and then down right shocking the other times

Otherwise he'll die before he finishes.

@MikeFal That's the reason I don't like the books or the show.

@Zane i love the show, I can't wait for the new season

The books are drug out too long and the show is the exact opposite. The dialogue only speaks directly in plot points it feels too abridged as a result.
I need a happy medium between 20 pages describing a turkey sandwich and a show where characters talk like their trying to blow through a conversation cuz there's too damn much to get to this week. lol
I sit through it though because I'm the one with HBO Go lol

@Zane complainer :)

6:42 PM
@bluefeet It's all about True Detective.

@Zane good but messed up show.
@FreshPrinceOfSO yum, coconut chocolate chip cookies I had to rub that in again

Truth. Brilliant but unsettling. You see them all yet?

@bluefeet i had my chocolate fix for today

@Zane yes I got caught up last night

Second to last episode.... Intense.
Oh snap episode 6 is out!

Yeah, definitely a feature. Try casting once in a while. CONCAT('Sum is: ', CAST(SUM(MyColumn) AS varchar(20))FreshPrinceOfSO 54 secs ago

1) why the downvote? This is well posed question. 2) I tried casting, doesn't work. — NumberFour 21 secs ago
Says the person asking the question...

It isn't a really bad question though
@FreshPrinceOfSO it doesn't seem completely necessary to do the casting though:

7:04 PM
Maybe different behavior in MyISAM vs. InnoDB? Though the output is suspect; might hazard a guess that the column is not integer...

@RocketHazmat Lots of things work the way they shouldn't in MySQL. It doesn't make it correct. — FreshPrinceOfSO 1 min ago

@FreshPrinceOfSO why would this help?
@NumberFour Use charFreshPrinceOfSO 27 secs ago

@Lamak VARCHAR isn't an acceptable cast type
(didn't know)

Aaah, get it. Char works! — NumberFour 56 secs ago
Because it did work...
I've said it before and I'll say it again. MySQL blows.

@FreshPrinceOfSO didn't know either

7:07 PM
I will never understand why people intentionally choose to use MySQL. What a pile of garbage.

@FreshPrinceOfSO When the context expects a string, the conversion takes place implicitly. It works the same way in SQL Server too, e.g. in RTRIM(123).

@FreshPrinceOfSO and lot of things that should work doesn't

Hey, does anybody want this piece of rotten meat? Free!

@AndriyM I would guess you would receive an error if you tried this in SQL Server

@AaronBertrand It's one thing when they say it's free but my old VP used to just say it's better.

7:08 PM
@Zane what does he says now?

@FreshPrinceOfSO Nope
SELECT CONCAT(name,SUM([object_id])) FROM sys.all_objects GROUP BY name;

@FreshPrinceOfSO Nope

@Lamak Well they are 1 year into a transfer to mysql that they still can't get to work so I don't know.

Or
SELECT CONCAT('Sum:',COUNT_BIG([object_id])) FROM sys.all_objects;

7:10 PM
> Election closes in 49 minutes.

My facepalms are from the different behavior for char vs. varchar or why he is getting what looks like some guid/hex/binary output from a simple concatenation of a string and what must obviously be an int.

@FreshPrinceOfSO you can't do this select 'Sum is '+ 100
Look at all you fancy 2012 people with you CONCAT function.

@Zane they see me rollin' they hatin'

@AaronBertrand Sum + 100 = 546573743a20343030 obviously.

Obviously

@jcolebrand your math maker works

@AaronBertrand it's on the election page
I didn't make any maths
I also didn't scroll up when I came in

7:34 PM

@jcolebrand thanks

@FreshPrinceOfSO aye

@jcolebrand your copy / paste mahobbler werks

We're [lucky|horrified|hopeful|ambivalent] to have them onboard!

Actually giving folks diamonds takes at least tens of minutes tho

7:37 PM
@jcolebrand you'd think they would have a stored procedure for this by now

It's never nice to speak ill will but I really hope bohemian doesn't win.

I'll be in a meeting when it is announced

@bluefeet that's brutal

That guy is an immature time bomb waiting to explode all over the network

@FreshPrinceOfSO meh, maybe. I mean, the process is more about making sure people are aware of the agreements and procedures
and less about kicking people out of the gate and telling them to be off and running

7:39 PM
@AaronBertrand it will be a sad day for StackOverflow

@AaronBertrand I would appreciate it if you waited till I wasn't in the room to talk bad about me

@AaronBertrand I saw this earlier from someone non-heap related
in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Overflow Chat, 4 hours ago, by Benjamin Gruenbaum
Got a negative meta vibe from Bohemian, but he seems to be trying which is good.
others noticed the negative vibe

@bluefeet want us to text you the results

So, I found out a subordinate recently created an SO account, and I was trying to abuse my powers and make him vote for @bluefeet
he was about to, but doesn't have 150 rep yet

SCANDAL!
Don't tarnish this election with your bullying and racketeering

7:43 PM
@AaronBertrand I will be really upset if Bohdumb gets elected

sorry, sorry. Just figured "what's the point of having a subordinate if I can't make him vote for bluefeet when I want him to?"
@FreshPrinceOfSO then prepare to be upset

@Lamak I know, I'm totally kidding

@jcolebrand how are we going to know?

I do wonder, though, how many socks bohemian might have

@Lamak there will be a post on that page

7:44 PM
@AaronBertrand yeah, I know that

@jcolebrand this page?

@Lamak you should have bountied some rep to him

WTF are those people posting "election ends in n minutes" in that chat room for? Can we punch them in the throat?

@bluefeet too late, just found out 10 minutes ago
@AaronBertrand where?

7:48 PM
@JNK Not sure if this counts as an answer for that guys question but it will certainly help his SSIS package.

@bluefeet Brilliant.

@FreshPrinceOfSO I don't think those are the best comments in the election chat room
I'm going to go flag some stuff now...

@FreshPrinceOfSO yeah, why would you install with Windows only mode when clearly you want SQL auth too?

@bluefeet like i care
@AaronBertrand BECAUSE BOHEMIAN

@bluefeet bluefeet bluefeet!!!

@bluefeet who cares anything is better than Bohemian

8:04 PM
What's the timeline on Bohemian melting down and quitting?

@billinkc I'm guessing I'll be his first confrontation

Is that a challenge?

After that...

@bluefeet congrats!

@JNK Can't it be Party Headquarters??

user58869
two of the people i voted for won

JNK
@Alex None of mine did, but what are you gonna do

user58869
maybe they can do it next time... but i dont remember anyone from last time doing it this time

is there a rule that says you can only go for it once?

@Alex It's cool man I forgive you.
Alright BI user group here I come.
See you all later.

@Alex who did you vote for

@JNK none?

@bluefeet so nice seeing a diamond by your name

Yay for @bluefeet!

8:23 PM
I assume they have some code that prevents you changing your name to include the diamond

In other news, it was above 60 yesterday. Now it's 20 and starting to snow. Not a fan of Colorado weather today.

@FreshPrinceOfSO behemian, bluefeet and siddharth rout

@Alex why did you vote for bohemian ? that was the worst candidate

JNK
@bluefeet Joking of course

@FreshPrinceOfSO i liked the picture of the wombat or whatever it is

8:24 PM
@Alex facepalm

i also voted for jon clements because of the picture of the little yellow dog but swapped him for bluefeet at the last minute

@Phil And you shall have no other mods before her?

@ypercube we already know they aren't.

@Alex don't be so sure. Though I'm sure that many users are engaged on SO enough to vote giving a lot of thought, there is surely a chunk of the votes that came just because of rep, for instance

@Lamak A LOT of it I'm sure

@Alex your boy posted that.

they probably don't know there IS a meta

in fairness, we all voted for @bluefeet because she's a familiar online presence. of course, she's familiar because she's awesome but that's beside the point i'm trying to make right now

@Alex for the future, I would advise that you look at how a candidate uses the 20k tools for moderating the site

@Alex Being a mod is a lot of flagging and dealing with bad quality posts, and so, the amount of flagging that they do as a user shows how comitted they'll be as a mod

user58869
@Lamak that sounds too complicated for me, i've got other things to do, perhaps fresh prince is right, only a small group of informed individuals should be allowed to vote... i think they do it that way in china

works for them

A: February 2014 Stack Overflow Community Moderator Election RESULTS

@bluefeet Terrible dataviz. Where's @mmarie when we need her?

@Lamak i keep getting network error on that link

@bluefeet can you see that image?

JNK
So basically the way it works is, it goes by 1st place votes in rounds. I think when your 1st place is eliminated your second place gets the your vote etc etc
Theres a threshold set based on total voting population

9:07 PM
@JNK yes. So, bohemian got elected with the votes of the first round, since he was above the threshold

@Lamak yes I can, thanks

One other person that mods praised, meagar, was close to making it, it appears.

@bluefeet good, because I can't. I can go to the link, but imgur is blocked for me

@AaronBertrand going by the values on the last round graph, it's something like 28 votes
though I don't know how to interpret that value in the last round

@Lamak yeah I didn't look at the tooltips. Visually those bars are nearly identical.

@AaronBertrand yeah, and the difference in the first round is actually 28 votes

Election math is hard. It could be much simpler without all of this distribution and transferring of votes. 1st choice = 3 points, 2nd choice = 2 points, 3rd choice = 1 point. Add it up, and Bob's your uncle.
Oh and it would be cool to also have a way to vote against someone.
(That might have prevented me from getting elected.)

@AaronBertrand yeah, it is. The final results were the same as if only counting the 1st choices

It's true, I have an uncle named Bob!

@TimStone What, are you saying her feet are not blue enough? Begone, heathen!

I have no intention of making my right foot as blue as my left

Two by two, feet of blue
