o/ @jokerdino your thoughts on that? see my last chat message

Let me scroll up

@hbdgaf keep it - but you may want to consider to edit it a bit. I do appreciate your honesty very much.

@hbdgaf it boils down to your choice.
i havent read any of the nominations. let me go do that

remove that

that is outside our domain
and don't onebox such nonsense
2

2:06 PM
but you can flag that
deleted

@jokerdino I understand Shog's point about getting out of the way, but I don't really think more than 9 of the other options would do much better. That's just my thinking, but if someone familiar with everyone in question believes I'm taking someone's slot, I'ld happily remove the bid.

you nominated because you want to be a mod right? Else, I am not sure why we have this issue.

You read my nomination blob? I'm saying I would do mod-like things, but that I don't have as much time as I would expect from a mod. So it's something in the middle. Make sense?
I'm trying to get feedback from people that already have stars here or around that are already familiar, so I can get some outside view in on my thinking. It makes sense to me, but I don't know that it makes sense to everyone.

> I'm not here to run for moderator.
Literally the first sentence.

@FEichinger You grasp my thinking though?

2:11 PM
Sure I grasp it. I find it distasteful, degrading to the election, and overall pointless, but all the power to you in that endeavour.

OK well then. There are only 2 mod slots this election and I think we have at least 2 capable mod candidates that promise to be active.

@jokerdino Two slots, there are two other candidates I would elect. Time to pull. <-- @Takkat

@BrunoPereira why did you migrate superuser.com/questions/717981/…?

@hbdgaf All the power to you.

op says that he can't able to boot Ubuntu 12.04 live usb.

2:14 PM
@FEichinger I'm not sure I follow why it's distasteful/degrading but either way it was pulled for other reasons.

@hbdgaf in case you feel that there are 2 candidates who would do the mod job better than you... well then.

@Takkat Yes. I feel there are two other candidates who have more time and a significant understanding of how the site works to do it better.

time is a thing we can't judge in advance, unfortunately.

This is true.

And, being a Mod can take out the fun from being on a site considerably...

2:16 PM
Tell me about it... I thought 10k tools would be neat. Then I had them and was all ugh

all but ugh, yeah ;)

Being a moderator is a soul sucking experience
10

Imagine not being able to close vote, to flag, to be grumbly at times, to... whatnot.
All your answers will have a diamond attached to them too.

@MarcoCeppi I completely grasp that point. That's why I put it out there that my nomination was for "emergency use mod-powers" not "we expect you to be a mod all the time". Some found it distasteful, but I suppose that is what it is.
@Takkat That too is a fair point.

I say this every election and people scoff at my suggestion and still think diamond will be this cool members only club
@hbdgaf I'm not speaking to you directly, simply stating for the masses

2:20 PM
@MarcoCeppi Oh, I get it. There was a chat conversation on that very fact a couple of days ago.

The fun would be to be able to shape a site better - but this leaves a bad feeling when you're not 100% sure the community agrees. An its a disaster after the community disagreed.

A those who understand it don't want the mantle, those who want the mantle don't necessarily understand it completely, and there are those that are willing to do it because hey, if you don't who else will.

That's why I appreciated your honesty so much.

@Takkat Noted. Given the mod slot count open, @FEichinger's feelings on the thing, and Shog9's statement; I don't think I could say I would have been any good at it if I hadn't pulled the nomination.

accepted.

2:24 PM
I have no problem with saying "I have flaws, I'm just here to give you another option." I do have a problem when it's "I know I'll be bad at this, I don't even plan to be good at this, you can vote for me anyway!"

I don't think that's the tone I conveyed, but I can see why hearing text that way would have upset you.
Anyway, moving along...

Q: Playing or converting .dv4 files in Linux

Pavel RudnevI need to find a way to playback a number of .dv4 files on Ubuntu 12.04 and Fedora 20, possibly after having converted them to a more conventional format. So far I have managed to convert the files with mencoder -fps 25 ./input.dv4 -ovc copy -oac copy -o ./output.avi which does a decent job. ...

Q: Can we give rep to those who flag questions?

FischerOn another meta post, a user suggested that we give rep to those who upvote answers, my suggestion is giving rep to those who give helpful flags. That way we encourage the users to flag questions, speaking about myself, I flagged many questions, very few were closed, so why flagging in the firs...

What's been up @JourneymanGeek - looking for a topic change...

not much ;p
been mucking with my new phone a lot
(and my old, rooted, cyanogen-modded phone)

@AvinashRaj that question is not into our domain of expertise

Because of Microsoft surface pro.

is Kubuntu really not official?

@Braiam Kubuntu underwent some changes recently. It might still be official, I just remember it being kind of a corner case.
@JourneymanGeek Nice. I'm looking for a tut on building a debian image such that I can boot it with multi-rom on my nexus7. It would be neat to have a full-on debian arm machine on it now that ubuntu-desktop support for arm has been nuked in favor of touch.

okey...
btw, no repro askubuntu.com/q/132651/169736 (I'm presuming he reinstalled)
> Our commercial support is provided in the UK by Emerge Open.

@Braiam: Its 'official' but not canonical maintained

for those that didn't know mod's delete a bunch of stuff

@JourneymanGeek good to know. i knew it was a different blob now.
@Braiam probably was booting off a usb device that was installed on a different pc or something and the uuid changed when plugged to something else. so, i can reproduce the situation quite easily.

the fix is to boot live, fix the uuid problem in /boot, and keep right on trucking...
or switch to disk-labels if you want to boot from a usb full install on several boxes

o/ @BrunoPereira - if you want to blow out those comments on meta feel free. i was trying to communicate that it's not necessarily simple to say "don't trust this user's flags" to the OP.

@Braiam posting it again seems like a great idea should have been a sock-comment on that one...

how the... I see green....

3:39 PM
@Braiam if you actually see green screenshots or it didn't happen. also it would be a browser bug ;)

nope... is something weird with my monitor

do you have speakers near your monitor? magnets do weird things to CRTs
black becomes green in some cases
puts on his best shameface for knowing that
also, your monitor can continue to perform optimally until you REMOVE the magnets, which is counter-intuitive, but happens.

LCD... so, I'm not sure if blaming it or the graphic card

*what is a crt?*

(I remember opening my teacher's crt monitor and planting a cell phone inside it just for the lols of seeing his face twist everytime we called the phone and the whole image would go *weird*)

@Braiam i feel a wheel of blame coming on
@BrunoPereira that is pure awesomesauce.

3:53 PM
@Braiam lol I was going to say, does anybody even use CRTs anymore?

@kalina I used to have one xD
1024*768... those were the good days xD

lol

@kalina If I move my head, I can see one

I still laugh when people talk about how their HDTV has a "high resolution"
@Braiam interesting, it still works?

I have a crt tv

3:56 PM
CRTs don't die. They're like the energizer bunny as long as they have a degauss button and a responsible user.

here's a video of it failing to boot ubuntu

yeah... actually is bigger and support greater resolution than my actual lcd... but it waste electricity like there's no tomorrow (apart the fact is way too big)

well yeah I figured it would be bigger :P
I guess you mean screensize though rather than overall size
I was quite shocked the first time I picked up a CRT monitor

@kalina Overral man
they need so much space :P

they're so heavy

3:58 PM
I needed help from my cousin to lift that up :P
mine was a 19 inch

@AmithKK 19ft would've been truly huge, indeed.

I have a 29 inch CRT tv besid me

the front glass was the heavy part. everything else was light.

@seth I know I posted this before, but I think you would be interested. Some sites even put in shame their mods deleting stuff and other aren't too far behind mods deleting

@Braiam I don't understand.. what?
I'm not saying leave deletion to Community, I'm saying delete the junk not the just off-topic or not constructive stuff that at least somebody will be interested in.

oh, I am not saying the contrary, just that is interesting that there is some community (users) involvement in deleting stuff

PSA: Software Recommendations goes into public beta tomorrow. If you want to migrate stuff there please be careful, SR has very strict requirements. I recommend asking in chat first.

Maybe that could be pinned?

I dont think we migrate to beta sites.

it depends on the site.
They specifically asked me to help keep us from migrating junk.

They think AU will send the junk to them?

don't worry. we dont migrate much. other than the rare migration to and fro meta

I can see that >.<

@Seth so you are saying that the new stuff should stay here, even if we know it would degenerate into a list?
(say, without requirements or conditions)

I'm saying if it doesn't meet SRs standards don't think about migrating it.
If it doesn't meet either ours or theirs just close it.

ok, what are ours standards?

Now, that is a billion dollar question

Didn't Oli answer that?

Q: Software Recommendation is live tomorrow! What makes us different in our quality standards?

BraiamIn an ideal world, there should be one SE site for each kind of question. Now, in the practice we are overlapping with at least 2 other sites (3 if we count SF) and that soon that number will grow one more when Software Recommendation go into public beta. So, SR has their standards for what kind ...

@Braiam still around?

@Lucio can you answer this? askubuntu.com/q/381398/169736

meh na
@Braiam Not really, sorry.
I really doubt that someone will care about that, he probably won't get any answer.
@Braiam lets close it
@FEichinger too much effort, this is the same: jsfiddle.net/tT6Sc/4

7:04 PM
@Lucio ... You literally only removed one line. And the result is the same.

yep

I only kept that line in to explain that that line doesn't change anything.

55 minutes left to nominate oneself...

@FEichinger That is who it is supposed to work.

@Lucio It doesn't work, though, that's the problem.

@Braiam it would be till the end of the time
@FEichinger If you understand js (and you do) that works.

Yes, it does what it's supposed to do - it doesn't do what it's intended to do.

Those who doesn't, read this: javascriptweblog.wordpress.com/2010/07/06/…
@FEichinger lol I wish to understand better English :)

I said it was a bad question, but the main goal was " I'm trying to delete the partition that Ubuntu is on" , so a linux tool like Gparted / Live media could help. But it was badly written... anyway, now it's closed but if the user wants could rephrase the question and request a reopen. (of course it will then closed as duplicate , haha)

wasn't there a good userscript that could be used to find the top candidates during this election phase?

@jrg I want one of those :P
For the SO election. There are too many candidates there to count it manually

jrg
So, who is the chat room favorite for the election here?

chat room favorite?

Good evening gentlemen, can anyone recoomend a good calender or shedule reminder program for ubuntu 13.10, I want something that just reminds me to check a few email accounts every 30 days or so. even an alarm or reminder function will do.

10:25 PM
Sunbird?
Might be too comprehensive.

@GaryWheadon do you want a desktop tool (aka not online)?

@FEichinger Around?

Yeh?

Flagged any questions lately?
I want to know if you've flagged questions for closure and if they actually got closed.

@braiam yep a desktop tool would be cool, just want a reminder prog

10:32 PM
Lots of flagging. Hardly anything that ended up closed.

jrg
@FEichinger haven't gone through it yet

Oh, actually, nevermind, this round most of it did get closed. Go figure.

arg, this assignments!
makes me bored...

It's been so long since I've flagged things for closure.. I know back in my flagging days the mods weren't very active about closing things that got flagged.
Was wondering how much that has changed.
I understand there are reasons for this sometimes, so just wondering.

don't worry, you will know...

10:37 PM
I don't understand what you mean..

going to use korganiser for calender

Meh, closing shouldn't be done by moderators but by the community.

@GaryWheadon Cool. Did you look at sunbird?

it was recommended by lifehacker not using google calender lol

@FEichinger That isn't entirely true.

10:38 PM
will look at sunbird thanks

However, since the changes to how flagging works closure flags put stuff in the queue.

do you think an advertisement would help?

Emm.. Maybe.
It would look better with the "HALP" at the top.

something like "have you reviewed anything today?"?

That would help.
"Have you reviewed any close votes lately?"

That is true as well. Might leave that one for downvotes.

@FEichinger - correct - that sort of thing should be appropriately voted - not flagged.

there's a decline option that says "flags shouldn't be for inaccurate or altogether wrong answers"

Okay.
