Q: Bitcoin SE Needs YOU! - A call for moderators

Tim PostWe're looking for a few good mods! Bitcoin Stack Exchange has been growing at an exponential rate. You've done a fantastic job of positioning this site as an authoritative Q&A for not just Bitcoin, but crypto currencies in general. Depending on what's in the news, which lately has been quite a b...

Apparently, we are having an election.
!@Marek
!!!

1:48 AM
WTB
WTH
I vote for u
pikachu !!!!
where is that election

Well, apparently it is not an election, but more pro-tem moderators chosen by the SE employees
@JacobTorba Thanks for the information, I'll think on it. :)

2:08 AM
We'll talk more about that tomorrow.

God damn hungry Iam! :( !

I've heard that more or less the only reliable method to treat hunger is eating something.
There are some nuts that numb the feeling, when you chew them, but it just isn't the same. ;D

Really? I should try that :( havent heard of that

2 hours later…
3:48 AM
Knock, knock
@JacobTorba

Hey!

You gonna watch the Olympics mate?

Yea, blasting downstairs and all

4:12 AM
mmmm, bitcoin at $666
on mtgox
other exchanges hovering around $700

yup
mtgox will be goin down until they fix that I think

Atleast they have fire under their feet to get it done
must be hell for em right now
they are practically rewriting their bitcoin tech

Lack of programming experience heh

Yea it all seems to stupid and silly

Snowboarding in 45 minutes, yahoo

4:19 AM
They shutdown withdraws so they can work on it?
WTF, dont they run a development copy?

Thats what they said the the statement. It is right move.
It would cause more mess then it already cause, thought

Oh yea they must of gone terminal with their withdrawing system
requests stacking up in db

4:32 AM
I think Iam gonna fall asleep when it stats :(
Iam working on report for almost 6 hours now :/

7 hours later…
11:22 AM
@Marek Sounds silly, but according to ancient prophecy one gets more done when sleeping a good nights sleep than when actually working through the night (unless the deadline is just after said night). ;)
Did I sent you this: thecodelesscode.com/case/130
@Marek Of course, I can only reference to the ancient prophecy, because I also lack any experience of that benefit. :p

The deadline is really bad for me now, hehe

:D
I think I will apply for one of the mod positions. Essentially, that is what I have been doing the past half year anyway.

You got my upvote

I don't like that I then will be in the position that could actually committed to be doing it, as in, I should also do it, when I am extremely busy, but since I haven't missed a day on Bitcoin SE for 177 days, it might not be bad.
;)

2 hours later…
1:16 PM
Well, that was two hours spent well: meta.bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/509/… ;)

1 hour later…
2:37 PM
room topic changed to Bitcoin Lounge: A place to chat about Bitcoin.SE, Bitcoin in general, and anything else that might be up. [altcoin] [bitcoin] [moderation] [news]

3:01 PM
Murch has added an event to this room's schedule.

7 hours later…
9:32 PM
Hey there @Marek
HOw is Olympia going?
For some reason I totally missed it, but a few days ago the Chaos Computer Club (a German club for Hackers) filed a complaint against our government for not following up on the NSA affair
:D

10:10 PM
Hah that's pretty neat

I am just reading about the Creationism vs Evolution debate by Ham vs Nye

Both had great points

I am just regularly surprised how 46% of the Americans can believe that the earth is only 10k years old.

Yea if you plotted it out in a graph, you'd notice most of them are from the south-east

10:21 PM
second to Turkey huh

among the listed
I find this question by Nye very compelling: "How did 7,000 species on Noah's ark lead to more than 15,000,000 species in 4000 years?"
Hi David

heya
I spend less time on chat than I probably should and I saw the link in your moderator nomination post
I keep trying to get the other mods to use chat, to no avail :P
so gratz on having a room more active than actual mod chat lol

Oh, chat was more or less dead the last few months. It just started up recently again, when I happened to meet @Marek here.
We've had about 10 unique visitors here since then. ;)

well let's hope it catches on

cdecker dropped in one afternoon, and a few newbies :)

10:31 PM
I like SE chat quite a lot, the oneboxing is very nice

It's sound blip catches me off guard every time and I nearly jump out of my chair.

haha, you do eventually get used to it

heh, I actually love that, getting that to realize that you are being mentioned
and that you get an indicator in your topbar

well as far as I'm concerned you're a front-runner for modship, and chat gets even BETTER as a mod

very glad to hear that. :)

10:34 PM
magical moderator superpowers

heh

Like what?

I am a bit scared about that
^^

lol nothing super dangerous, they reserve that stuff for the SE employees

was there a third entry so far?
Just checked, not yet.

10:35 PM
not that I've seen, no

I may put in a third entry
Although I don't have the contributions to show like Murch

@DavidPerry Since I have you here to pick your brains, any thoughts on how we could handle these ever recurring questions?

honestly all we're looking for is anything that shows you have a solid understanding of how SE works and such
proper use of flags and such
ugh duplicate questions, bane of my existence

Alright, so just "flas as dupe", move on?

pretty much, yeah
the real problem is that all the current mods became mods before bitcoin took off and we got hired lol

10:37 PM
Yeah, I didn't realize in the very beginning, but it does become old quickly that there is ever the same question with ever the same lack of previous research

now none of us have enough time to handle the queue
so it just sits until someone has a few hours and blows through destroying things
we need someone with time to do maintenance :P

Yeah, well, strictly speaking I, too, am investing more time than I should (^_^)
but, these days it is about 1-3 hours a day, I think
Often I just wonder what to do.
This question has been on about a gazillion times.
But, in this flavor with the combination of these four question it isn't really covered by a single dupe.
Essentially, it is not adhering the "one question per post" rule, but if you tell them, it still gets answered, before it is improved, then the asker doesn't care anymore, cuz he has his answer.
Editing it later to reduce it to one question, makes the answers not fit anymore
Closing it as a dupe will not answer all questions.
"Too broad" doesn't feel correct, because it actually can be answered in a few paragraph.

sorry my wife just came downstairs, had to afk for a second

NP, that's the benefit of asynchronous communication.

we had a delivery of D&D miniatures and their associated painting supplies. yeah, I'm that kinda nerd

10:44 PM
heh. Don't worry, me too. :D
Got a few shelves of RPG rule books behind me. ;)

ah, that one even hits pet peeve #2: 4 questions per question...
that's just a terrible question, I would flag it for whichever reason most offends you and then write the rest in a comment
we also encourage editing if you think you can just improve the question yourself
everything is versioned so we can always roll back your edits if something goes wrong

So let's start: a) duplicate, b) no previous research, c) too broad (especially "all other coins")

yeah that should be a red flag, almost nothing applies to "all other coins"

Would you say it is too late to close a question after it has acquired answers?

nah, we prefer not to delete answered questions, but closing is appropriate
unless it's just completely off-topic
or an obvious dupe

11:01 PM
alright

if it doesn't belong on the site at all, kill it with fire. if it's questionable and has no value, kill it with fire. if it's questionable but someone might get value from it, close but keep.

So when does a SE community get to receive the special flair and design stylings other communities get. This blue, generic theme is way too simple and doesn't have the Bitcoin vibe.

We have a volunteer! ;)

we get a special design when we leave public beta, which is basically at SE's discretion
last I heard we were in the queue for graduation but there were several other sites in front of us and they just have the one designer
I'll ask again next time I talk to an SE employee

Okay, sounds good. :)

Q: Overview of the fee structure and strategy to minimize fees?

user599464 What are the current rules regarding transaction fees? What transactions are broadcasted by the QT-Client. How to the big pools act - what kind of transactions do say include in there blocks. The Background of the question: We are building a site where people can deposit bitcoin. Interact with...

Does this look like a duplicate?

what kind of transactions do say include in there blocks.
facepalm

I do declare

it almost certainly is. the challenge is going to be finding the first question where someone asked about fees
it may also be too localized because as soon as you write an answer it's going to change
thus ensuring the question gets asked 385,000 times
(related note: can't wait for a proper sliding-scale fee system to get implemented so this one will stop happening)

I've always wondered about that, whats the issue with the current fee system?

it's one of the last artifacts left from the fact that Bitcoin hit the public eye before it was ready

11:19 PM
The priority system seems reasonable, miners should be looking for the top fees

yeah it's not the mining side that's tough, it's the client side

Oh, so it's a hit-or-miss thing?

estimating the fee someone realistically needs to pay to get into the next block is only easy if your estimate is "pay 1 satoshi more than anyone else has"
i.e. the most expensive option
standardizing the fee is difficult, so satoshi just sort of set it to a fixed value and said "we'll work that out later"
then never did
it's supposedly at the top of the dev queue though, so it should get fixed soon

satoshi left a lot of hard issues

to be fair, though, he did solve the hardest one before the left lol
In computing, the Two Generals' Problem is a thought experiment meant to illustrate the pitfalls and design challenges of attempting to coordinate an action by communicating over an unreliable link. It is related to the more general Byzantine Generals' Problem (though published long before that later generalization) and appears often in introductory classes about computer networking (particularly with regard to the Transmission Control Protocol), though it can also apply to other types of communication. A key concept in epistemic logic, this problem highlights the importance of common knowl...

11:22 PM
Isn't that the basis of BTC?

indeed
the blockchain/PoW solves the 2GP (as well as the generalized BGP)
the fees will take a few devs a bit of serious thought to solve, that one stood unsolved by the entire field for decades
