Anybody can read that -> http://askubuntu.com/robots.txt. Isn't that a security risk?

How so?

5:42 PM
Dunno? thats why am asking :/

this needs some close votes askubuntu.com/q/233426/169736

@blade19899 Well, what do you expect to be the risk there?
I mean, something must have made you think it could be. So what is that?

@FEichinger Targeted attacks to a folder? such as this one "Disallow: /u/" which i found odd that stackexchange made a folder "u"? in the root of AU?

@blade19899 It's the short URL for /users/

This post has me suspicious that it is plagiarised posy and paste....the working seems off-it seems like more of what you would read in an article....the last bit to be specific...." Since we’re only covering the basics in this guide, we’re not going to install ZFS as a root file system. This section assumes that you’re using ext4 or...." has anybody seem this somewhere? askubuntu.com/questions/414532/what-is-z-file-system-zfs
**copy and paste......stupid finger have a mind of there own.....
** working not working........sheesh

5:55 PM
@FEichinger Okay. that "u" dir is a 404 anywas. Thanks for the link!

@TrailRider, Q has been removed by the author

As I said, it's the short link for askubuntu.com/users/36315

Gotcha!
Thinking about implementing something similar to my website

Similar to robots.txt or to the short link?

5:59 PM
@FEichinger the short links. And that article you posted about robots.txt.

Well, mod_rewrite is your friend then.

@blade19899 well then that takes care of the problem, but I'm still wondering...the user seems to be fishing for rep. and had 3 down votes on the question that likey wanted to recover.....I will have to watch this user for plagiarized answers in the future

Q: Flagrant copy/pasting in progress?

vasa1I have flagged a couple of questions and answers which are outright copy/paste jobs. I wonder what action will be taken. Will it be open action so that others don't go down the same road?

I want to be like www.example.com/123. and it goes to www.example.com/something-about-a-cat
@TrailRider, username? and link please!
@FEichinger I'll look up on that!

@blade19899 "static URL" is the keyword you're looking for.

6:05 PM
@blade19899 user name is "nux" askubuntu.com/users/230052/nux he's currently using Richard Stallmans(I think) photo so it makes him easy to identify at a glance....been a member for 35 days and 1,400 rep already.....not out of the question but make you wonder as well.

@FEichinger Thanks! Now, I got to get to studying for exams tomorrow. Should have started sooner

Q: Creating a user valid for a given time period?

ISMAILI wan to create a user on Ubuntu valid for 10 min. How can I do that if it's possible?

@TrailRider Leave it. The mods will pick it up. And it doesn't really matter if he is just fishing for points.
But gotta go now!
Bye! 0/

@blade19899 I have no problem with him fishing for points just gives him a better reason to plagerize was my point in bringing it up......Bye

@Mateo - there's a common way to list available cams. three key combos breaks the fragile keylog blob i'm using. why is it every feature request just points to the one part of everything that half works.

6:37 PM
opencv says no because it wants to be cross-platform. i gave on that when i had to use appindicator. it made me choose whether to develop for linux OR windows... makes me sad, but it's how it goes i guess.

Just to let you guys know, I have edited the Q's that were getting spammed a while back. They have still not been answered, cause everyone forgot them, during the spam waves. Lets try to answer them again.

@Mateo - there's also a way to do it in opencv, by trying indices until you error out.... it's either really pretty or not pretty at all depending on how you feel about that type of design pattern.

Not all the Q's just a few(There were allot of them getting spammed).

@blade19899 one of your unanswered wants to boot from grub an XP iso... that's an EOL windows release, so it could be closed as off-topic if you really think about it. it could also be duped to installing grub or booting from usb. it just strings together 3 questions
the next unanswered not closed question was a request for an app in software center. it has an answer, just not one that uses USC. i checked no less than ten questions. i'm done.

@hbdgaf Whether or not XP is EOL is completely irrelevant for us.
More relevant would be whether or not grub still supports XP.

6:48 PM
it does, but the problem is fourfold:
in the spirit of not supporting EOL linux releases, shouldn't xp community support be halted.
if it's an xp "livecd" it's not official installation media
if you're trying to install XP from within grub, you're asking for problems with MBR overwrites
if you're trying to boot XP to get recovery console for some reason, there are other more elegant solutions.
my main point was, i couldn't find a good question in there. and i'm tired of looking.

On the first point: No. It's completely irrelevant for us. We don't support XP at all, so if we have an otherwise valid question where XP happens to be relevant, we still keep that question.

okay, that one is fair. the question would need to take out the xp.iso ref then though...

and no jokerdino around when you need him :'(

A: docker commands related problem

user238511I tried this command tail -f /var/log/kern.log, i got like this Feb 2 21:44:18 neethu-pc kernel: [ 6211.765815] cfg80211: (2457000 KHz - 2482000 KHz @ 20000 KHz), (300 mBi, 2000 mBm) Feb 2 21:44:18 neethu-pc kernel: [ 6211.765818] cfg80211: (2474000 KHz - 2494000 KHz @ 20000 KHz), (300 mBi...

I can't believe that question was after an edit... You're good at formatting.

1 min ago, by Seth
OT: mint http://askubuntu.com/questions/414564/permissions-issue-in-mint

@hbdgaf hm, seems like that happens a lot.

@FEichinger (mint question is posted ... Seth: "Elapsed turnaround time, point eight seconds!")

@Mateo the keylog blob fragility is something to be expected. i took an amateur attempt at a python userland rootkit and ripped out part of what i needed. i'll fix it. i'm just frustrated.

got closed in 3 minutes. Sometimes I think we're too efficient.

@Seth that's good :P

7:07 PM
@Seth Now if we could apply that to the other 140k questions ...

@FEichinger LOL

o/ @Rinz

hey
gaming so afk alot ;)

i didn't think you were on my steam list, but something the other day made me think you are ;)

could be? I -was- on steam :=)

7:22 PM
Why are AU's mods so inactive? This is sad.

Tell us about it.

I thought we elected them with the premise they'd be active!

They're reasonably active, they just rarely come to chat.

7:51 PM
@FEichinger there are. but weekends is always slow

anyone knows what packages install the "ATI binary X.Org driver" in the USC?

@FEichinger there should be more mods
Or even better, re-elect them
Why should be mods that are not around, or be there till the site's death?
Temporary mods is the solution.

I don't think so.
I do wonder if Stefano is ever around though.. I never see him.

8:07 PM
@Lucio Hell no.
@Lucio Also "hell no" to that.

@Braiam Yeah I saw that. His activity feed isn't very interesting though :-/

mods are not required to check in every day

@badp I know that.

also flag handled don't show up there

8:08 PM
I know that too.

Hush, @badp! I thought you were busy!

Maybe Lucio doesn't?

yep, and same user.

@Seth I know... but the Questions?

8:11 PM
@Braiam An identical answer a duplicate question does not make.

@Seth ^
@FEichinger through it could be an indicator... but oddly enough two out 3 has no accepted answers and the third is something about a live CD (which could be due some error during the burning)

On a cleaner site, I'd dupe them.

I'm closing them...

AU is too much of a mess to clearly say whether or not they are "sufficiently different", though.

yeah, I know what you say... I've kicked couple of times apt/dpkg questions out the queue
talking about the queue is over a hundred again... seriously, I can't skip it a couple of days?!

8:21 PM
Give me ... I think 700 rep, and I'll work through it.

@FEichinger 1.7k*

@Braiam ... Right. See, I don't even know how much AU rep I have.
I just remembered it was something300 ...

> I am wanting to install Ubuntu via virtual box but I don't know what I am doing or even if it possible
PKM!

9:19 PM
@Braiam poke

I'm confused, I thought that edits should be significant, but I didn't think that just grammar and spelling was to trivial. recently I have rejected edits of this type but they have been approved by others.... ok each of us have different opinions, now I see a question edit of this type approved by a Mod., so I've been mistaken about the edit policy?
**that spelling and grammar WERE too trivial......chat needs an edit button...(at least for me)

ChAt You can

@Mateo LOL OK how do I edit after I press enter??

@TrailRider It does have one. Click the down arrow on the left, or press the up arrow key.

^near that pencil icon on, there is an arrow

9:23 PM
Even mobile chat has an edit button!

@FEichinger O_O
really?

@Braiam Yes. It's hidden in the menu button, and can only edit the last message, but it exists.

/me considers that SE see chat as the ugly cousin

anyway - when it is only one (or just two) correction(s), it is mostly too trivial.
@TrailRider oh, was the mod named "Community"
@TrailRider your reviews look good to me :)

@Braiam Guess it's time for me to come back.

9:36 PM
@TrailRider askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/209206 - so the "Community" mod approves when someone decides that a review is "almost there" and decides to edit it further right in the review queue. aka - not a "real" mod

@Mateo yes

Community also rejects automatically if the edit needs to be killed (that is, an Edit where the "helpful" tick is unset, or an edit that was since invalidated by race condition, etc.)

10:00 PM
@Mateo No, this was a true Mod., I knew about the "Community". I was just confused, are spelling, grammar, and slight typos too minor of an edit(assuming that the post was hard to read w/o the edit)
**was not hard to read

10:19 PM
I'm back!
;)
hope this time that things will go better for our understanding :)
why do I have a review queue if I need 2k rep to do anything?

so much for leaving
you can use 2 of the review queues at 500 rep

@kalina what do you mean?
oh, yeah I see the 2 now :P
hi @TrailRider @FEichinger @Braiam @badp @Oli @JourneymanGeek @ReutSharabani @Takkat @M'vy @AnotherGoogler @Rinzwind @FaheemMitha !

Holy mother of pings.

@FEichinger LOL

Oli
@slowbanned Nope. None of that thankyouverymuch.

10:24 PM
@slowbanned we usually don't ping anyone if we don't have anything good to say...
and even if we do, we don't mass ping

@Oli what?
@Braiam LOL

Pings are a tool to get the attention of someone.
Don't use them for a "hello!" to everyone in the room.

@FEichinger that's it, I said hi

21 secs ago, by FEichinger
Don't use them for a "hello!" to everyone in the room.

ok mom I learned the lesson. Now go watch tv with my friend :P

10:28 PM
Okay, let me rephrase that: Don't ever use pings to say "hello!" to a bunch of people you're not even going to talk to for more than five minutes.

@FEichinger applause.

Oli
Especially when half the room are just lurkers. If you want to send something to the entire channel, just send it. No pings required.

loool a client trolled his banker xD
this is it
I'm gonna do it too someday xD
I'm curious if someone actually trolled the police :P
I want to do them a prank someday :)
my cousin is an officer, so if I'm going into trouble he's able to free me
I know, he already did

Q: Suggested Edit limt for low rep users

wilfCan limit of suggested edits on the same question be enforced, dropped, or atleast looked at? Here is a more-than perfect example - I allowed this through once, but then it appeared again... Would be good for low rep users, though it is a useful way to earn rep, particularly as you can't do muc...

@AskUbuntuMeta Holy mother of revision history.
@Oli You there?
Or @fossfreedom?

10:36 PM
o/

@FEichinger socks?! O_o

Oli
@FEichinger Yeah, somebody's grinding accounts for rep. What an idiot.

yeah - seen that.

@Oli That was my suspicion as well, yes.

10:37 PM
what are socks in this context other than something you put on your feet?

sockpuppet

@kalina ok ;)
I knew that, but thought it was something different in this context
@kalina I want to ask you something, but please don't take it as an offence. Do you have friends in real life?

how am I not supposed to take that offensively?

What the ... ?

Yes, I have multiple tiered group of friends ranging from a small group of super close friends to a medium group of reasonably close friends to a large group of people I hang out with frequently to a ginormous group of people I recognise and will say hi to

10:43 PM
@slowbanned: do you? ;p

@kalina why? It's just a curiosity ;) I see that you have much rep and are here much of the time

Dude, get a filter on your brain.

@JourneymanGeek of course, I also have a girlfriend as well

weird question - lets not try to make people uncomfortable with such direct personal questions.
2

@slowbanned half of the people in here have more reputation than I do
I am merely a blip on the radar in terms of overall users and their reputations

10:44 PM
also don't ping people randomly I was asleep.

@jou

@kalina STOP THREE-LETTER-PINGING. GEEZ.

ok @fei

... Screw you.

I'm still waiting

10:45 PM
I'm awake now. Slightly

I BEST CENSOR THIS COMMENT BEFORE I GET ANOTHER META POST COMPLAINING ABOUT ME

get a room ;p

@kalina - first and only warning - please respect others

@fossfreedom I... what?

@fossfreedom To be fair, you should be telling that to me as well, for that one.

10:46 PM
I'm going to assume you're joking because anything else would just... blow my mind

This is just banter between the two of us.

I hope so - get a room.

@JourneymanGeek cough cough I have said nothing.

@FEichinger called "The Bridge"?

@fossfreedom I'm still unsure about what exactly I've done wrong
so I'm going to need you to clarify

10:50 PM
all - banter is one thing - decorum from all is needed.

oh god...

Oli
Heh, I thought that would do it

oh dear

Oli
What an idiot.

... Huh.
Interesting.

10:51 PM
I find it ironic that I get warnings for speaking English with somebody I know well yet you have users with swastikas in your channel

I was wondering about that 'user' btw
no answers tho, so its not like I can flag him

refresh

didn't knew US has a reverse lookup for landlines

@Braiam: that looks fake-official

yeah - hope that is fake - probably make stalking someone easy. Doesnt quite ring true (at least I hope not).

10:57 PM
oh hey, I just accidentally found a keyboard shortcut to reopen the last closed tab
my life is now complete

> NSA
@kalina Ctrl + Shift + T isn't too accidental D:

it is pretty accidental

:) they are always watching

president bomb hostages
nuclear cellphone trigger
first lady weapons mass destruction

grabs popcorn while the CIA knock down @kalina door

10:59 PM
air force one sabotage
HELP, I'M BEING OPPRESS--

@kalina ... Yeh, I could've told you that, too.

This user is no longer here, do not try to contact her, she's being illegally extradited to the US to be kept in confinement

BEHOLD THE VIOLENCE INHERENT IN THE SYSTEM!

@kalina To be fair, you did kinda bring that upon yourself.

Q: Development help needed to create a commercial Ubuntu derivative

user58439I hope I am not breaking any site rules with my question; if so, please just delete it! I am trying to create an Ubuntu derivative with everything in tact with the addition of a running modules' timer to help set aside minute fractions of a penny for each second the modules/programs have run, for...

@FEichinger ??

@fossfreedom It was still alive a moment ago.

damn - missed .. busy looking elsewhere.

Yeh, no big deal. Just figured I'd ping you both with it.

Oli
Sorry I was munching through a bunch of accounts on the new user page. I guess I caught it.

11:12 PM
err also err @fossfreedom

Oli
That one was a bit older

@fossfreedom those types of services exist. most of the free ones just ask you to register with some data warehouse like intellinus.

@hbdgaf weird decision - wonder why this isnt regarded as a data-protection issue.

I bet they harvest yellow/white pages to get address and phones
the emails is still a mistery for me...

This nux guy seems to like copying content en-mass from other sites and posting it as his own answer without attribution

11:25 PM
that issue has been dealt with - see the meta Q&A

I'm sure there was a meta Q about it...

@fossfreedom Considering the four flags I have made by now, I don't think that's all that "dealt with".

@fossfreedom looks to me like he's still got to keep all of the rep he's earned from stealing content

(Not that I disagree on not discussing it in public.)

@fossfreedom it's a niche market. starts with people wanting to harvest marketing data, then someone wants to use it for telemarketer call lists, then someone wants to use it for skip-tracing. it's a progression where the graph just keeps getting bigger and more interconnected.

11:26 PM
Oh for heaven's sake, not another one ...

Anyone notice it stopped while slowbanned was around? yeah that.

Q: Tool to create a bad physical location report on disk

KarlsonI am in need of a tool that would run on an Ubuntu system that would be able to report the following: Bad physical locations on a disk (cylinders, sectors) Files that are affected by these bad locations. Filesystem I currently have is NTFS but it would be good to have for ext2/3/4 as well.

There's a suspiciously large amount of user deletions on chat recently either way.

? speaking of users or messages ?

Users.

11:30 PM
did we ever determine if zorin was offtopic? i thought i remembered seeing it on meta.

@hbdgaf unofficial = off-topic

that's what i thought.

from the few screenshots I've seen - very strange interface. personnally - dont like what they've done to the xfce interface.

They're trying to make XFCE look more like windows and give it compiz-plugins i presume. Like mint does with mate. XFCE is fine ootb. if you can't find something in xfce you're probably just not trying.
i do wonder if they actually make any money on reskinning xfce to look like various OSes.

11:36 PM
true - very true.

on checking the project page, it looks like they have skins for windows, macos, and a fakey for unity with a side-panel too.

lol - "super secure - immune from windows viruses" ... and on the same page heavily promotes wine and play-on-linux

11:49 PM
@FEichinger ... Well, seven now.

@fossfreedom that does make me giggle. on the other hand, with the right know-how, you can just blow out app specific wine-prefixes. i use wine to run unsavory things in new wine-prefixes all the time.
even have a bash script to install ida and immdbg to their own wine-prefix and make a global shortcut. i got tired of doing it over and over.

@FEichinger keep flagging - will cleanup

@fossfreedom I think I got them all now.
There's some imagery that's reused a bunch of times by multiple people, and some of the answers seem plagiarised but I can't locate a source because it's rewritten a fair bit.
And I haven't bothered with reverse-search on some of the screenshotted codesnippets and the like, because ... that really shouldn't be screenshotted in the first place.
But considering we have a code function and they chose to post screenshots instead, I suspect those are copied as well. :/
