12:00 AM
@SimonSheehan : eh, much cheaper than they used to be ;p

12:19 AM
@JourneymanGeek Still not as cheap as the Phenom x6's

do they come in laptops? ;p

that is, if your going for brute power over power and features
nope :(
i saw on slashdot one that intel has made 10 core processors

notes when i sneak in a new motherboard for his ex pIII, is seriously considering an AMD board ;p

@JourneymanGeek you have more than one PC i take it?

12:53 AM
@SimonSheehan: two laptops, shared desktop
the PIII used to be my server
oh, and an atom box i run as a server ;p

1:40 AM
there we are. i
has a cli install of gentoo. WITH WIRELESS

2:04 AM
Oh wow. StackExchange sites now have a mobile theme. This is great from my iPod

Anyone know If it's possible to view how many edits I have done? I don't really see anything on my profile at all

stabs I need to recompile my kernel from the initial setup to run X

@Journeyman How hard will that be?

its not hard
it takes time ;p

2:10 AM
I Don't recall doing that after setting up X :s

@Journeyman configuring X was a nightmare for me :/

lol
wireless was in my case
since the documentation was horrid in that respect
(needed to emerge the ucode package for that specific wireless adaptor for it to work)

Ah. That documentation seems... Hard to read

its even more fun when you make a mistake.
since you need to do it. ALL OVER AGAIN
i'm not expecting handholding, i kind of expect.. clear instructions

2:25 AM
@Journeyman Isn't gentoo supposedly the most difficult distro to use, And requires lots of experience?

@SimonSheehan that would be Arch.

2:39 AM
don't forget LFS ;p
well this is my 4th attempt
this is the first time i got as far as a usable system

@Sathya I found arch quite easy, albeit X setup

@Sathya the big problem for me is waiting for things to compile ;p
and its a pretty fast box. core 2 2.0 ghz i think

@Journeyman Core 2 duo or quad?

duo
its a laptop
at the moment quadbooting windows XP, 7, OS X and gentoo

Quite a lot. I was a bit bothered by my intel i3 in my laptop. It was advertised be Dell as quad core, but it's a dual core with 4 threads
It's very fast still, not complaining

2:51 AM
lol
i don't think there's quad core i3s are there?
my main laptop is a dual core hyperthreaded core i5
i love it to bits ;p

Heh. I think it's neat that the i7 laptops are so powerful, their practically desktops. I'm saving up for one :P

lol
2nd generation core i5 laptops are practically desktops ;p

Nice. Right now I'm looking at the Thinkpads... Seems fairly bang for the buck and highly durable

i'm running a base model x220
(one that dosen't actually exist in tabook - no wwan or camera ;p)

Oh neat. Do you like it?

3:06 AM
lol
<3
its probably one of the best subnotebooks around now

Nice. I was looking at the T-series ones.

T series are ok, if you want/need a bigger screen

@Journeyman you suggest the X ones for power and being light?

3:36 AM
yup
the x2xx series are pretty much a smaller version of the T series
the X1xx are AMD based
but 12.5 inch screen + being light enough to carry on one hand is.. pretty much perfect for a carry around/school laptop

Rant: WHY ARE THERE NO LIGHT, PORTABLE LAPTOPS WITH GOOD BATTERY LIFE AND A SCREEN THAT'S MORE THAN 1366x768 DANGNABIT!!!
right. that's all I have to say on the subject.

lol
mine is 2 out of 3
GAH. one wrong menu option.. and i need to compile the kernel again

3:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek: Still trying to install Gentoo?

oh, i got wireless working in a roundabout way, now gui!
cause apparently i need to get wpa_supplicant set up to get the wlan up. however wpa_supplicant dosen't seem to connect to my ap, so i use wicd-curses for that
wicd-curses needs me to start dbus ...
but hey
IT BOOTS! <3
@MarkSzymanski: installed the base system. trying to install X now

Heh, nice. Good luck configuring it XD

which.. naturally... needs me to set up the kernel a certain way
pain in the butt, this is ;p

@nhinkle my friend has a 15' laptop and gets 1600x1000 for some reason :S

@SimonSheehan: my brother's old laptop was 1400x1050

4:04 AM
Damn that's big. I'm not a fan of the 1366... Especially the 66 part. Something just not right. Desktop has 1650x1050 though <3

lol
i'm not a fan of 16:10
or widescreens
i think my old laptop was a 1280x800

Well I didnt really pick it for it's size - I picked it because it was the cheapest available at the time

eh
its impossible to get 4:3, and "HD" is worse than screens we had in the PIII era sometimes...
though...
if money was no object..

I do like wider screen, but 4:3 reminds me so much of the great CRT days.

donno if you can run it off a 'regular' graphics card tho ;p

4:12 AM
@Journeyman my school actually only uses 4:3 still.

@SimonSheehan that's a 3280 x 2048 screen

Lets see if I can find the monitor..
@Journey today when I was at the theater, I wanted to use their screen and sound badly :P would be brilliant

eh, i have a 17 inch crt here ;p

oh i love my 21" 1920x1080 external display, though I wish it were 1920x1200
but man it's hard to find a laptop with a good screen these days
but seriously, a 17" CRT? Don't people give away 17" LCDs these days?

4:28 AM
@nhinkle What kind of hardware do you run on?

my HP dm4t is my primary computer. there's some crappy old desktops around the house, but I never use 'em

Heh. Should use them for experimenting :p

and there's my external 21" Dell monitor, and my Microsoft Media Pro keyboard, and my 5 button Microsoft mouse
they're really not worth experimenting on. we're talking P4 here, and no hard drives :P

@nhinkle pretty nice. I got my Dell only two weeks before the intel i series went out :p. And I use a P4 at school ;)
On my Linux machine

5:11 AM
hmm
i got x working :)

5:27 AM
Nice!

2 hours later…
7:31 AM
morning all

8:00 AM
@DMA57361 morning.
lololol - I've installed counter strike on my work computer but don't want my boss to find out, what can I do?
how about uninstall CS before you get sacked?
-2
Q: How to hide programs from Programs and Features?

mahen23I installed some games on my work computer and I want to remove them from the Program and Features list, without uninstalling them. Any ideas?

O_o lol
isn't that what smart phones or netbooks are for? gaming at work?

8:23 AM
and two hours later... kdemeta-base is still compiling ;p
loool

8:34 AM
@tombull89 @JourneymanGeek @DMA57361 Hello guys.

@JourneymanGeek ow.

Hey @Borisyo. Did you get that screen protector problem sorted?

> -1 Because your boss follows superuser.com
lolol

@Sathya more like - a job.

@tombull89 Yes Tom.
How can i transfer data from laptop 2.5 inch hard drive through USB?
What kind of adapter do i need?

8:36 AM
from to where?

USB > SATA addaptor? I've got one, brilliant pieces of kit.
that one, exactly.

@tombull89 SATA > USB
Because hard drive is SATA.
So i want to connect it to USB port with adapter.

yeah, well /\ that then
it'll pop up as an external disk.

How do i know it will fit SATA of my laptop hard drive?
SATA of desktop and laptop is different in size?

all SATA addaptors are the same, be it 2.5 or 3.5" drives

8:53 AM
hmm
there any way to search for one of my answers using keywords?
is feeling remarkably stupid... and found a better answer for a VERY old question

@JourneymanGeek user:me <other search terms> in the search box when logged in

ahh
superuser.com/questions/304533/… his tech needs to be shot

@JourneymanGeek I just wanted to know main thing - does SATA on desktops differ in size from SATA on laptops?

no
i believe @tombull89 said that.

@JourneymanGeek @DMA57361 @tombull89

Anybody knows good alarm clock with sounds and descriptions for Windows 7 64-bit?

9:09 AM
@Boris_yo there's really no need to ping people in the room for every random question. Some of us aren't joining in the conversation because we're busy you know...

@DMA57361 Ah okay.
You mean disturb?
Ping = disturb?

@Boris_yo ping = use the @ function to sent people a notification

Someone in Gmail had status "Do not ping me"
I thought it means "disturb"

@Boris_yo well pinging someone (in these contexts) usually involved disturbing them at the same time, so it's pretty much the same thing

@DMA57361 No problem

9:16 AM
You could try ClockX, alarms, various clock faces, etc.
(I know this is XP, but try it on Win7x64)

9:42 AM
i don't need an alarm clock. i have a dog.

10:14 AM
oo 8500 flat for @DMA

@Sathya lol, I think I've been on that for a while now
although my rep audit tells me I should be on 8503

didn't spot it earlier :p

f/e
I need to make a push and get that climbing again really

10:27 AM
I'm only about 500 rep away from the magical 20k mark

O_o blimey, speeding away in to the distance
I'm still like 2.5k from getting 20k across the entire network :/

10:48 AM
heheh

in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Overflow Chat, 11 mins ago, by Marc Gravell
I will investigate, but in summary: we snuck in some code that detects short answers with links to posts, and makes it a comment automagically

@Sathya ahhh

beautiful.

A very nice change, but something is apparently broken :)

2 hours later…
1:18 PM
@Iszi I did not know that, shame.

1:45 PM
@PriceChild Yeah, the output of TREE /A is what I used as a basis of the folder structure formatting in my question.

Rob
Anyone know offhand whether Shockwave is part of the Adobe Flash Player plugin?
I've been getting pretty bad performance with Chrome lately and I think Shockwave is related, but nothing mentions it under Programs

@Rob No, it's a separate plugin.
Chrome may have it included still, though. That much, I'm not sure of.

@Rob No, it's not. It's a seprate thing (as to my cost the other day I had to update Shockwave, Flash, and Adobe Reader)

Rob
weird... guess I use HijackThis to rip it out?
I'm going to assume it was included, since it's not in my installed software

In PowerShell, is select an alias for something?

1:50 PM
/me imagines the downvote 'cost' being refunded upon your flag being valid
"look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves"

@PriceChild ... how is downvote cost linked to flagging?

2:05 PM
Yes, Downvoting and flagging are... Irrelevant.

@SimonSheehan I think you mean unrelated

Meh I guess not all flags... but say i'm flagging for "just a crap question in general" like 'low quality' or 'too localised', i'll downvote too for good measure.

@PriceChild ah, well if they get deleted then yes, you get the rep back

Anyway, I was just 'imagining' it so will not defend the idea, just explain!!

but you might need to trigger a recalc (superuser.com/reputation)

2:09 PM
oh really? cool. I guess not closed though?

no, only deleted

meh i'm not too bothered, its only 1/2 rep a time no? was just random musings :-)

indeed

Q: Is it better to use an offset or manually set CPU voltage (with respect to CPU longevitity)?

BreakthroughBackground: I recently purchased a new computer, and I'm working with an ASUS P8Z68-V Pro motherboard an an Intel i7 2600k. This question does not pertain specifically to my hardware, but I mention what I have to explain why I get the voltages/temperatures I get. Details: In my motherboard,...

I've never seen that page before, neat. Although I'm tempted to hit the recalc button... Don't want to lose rep though

2:12 PM
@PriceChild Swap it out for a 2600 and leave the damn thing alone!!

Actually, I'll hit it

@SimonSheehan it tells you what will happen

@DMA yes, I see now. Down 4 rep :P

or rather, it tells you your real rep score, if it's different from the normalised one on the site then you know what will happen

But I can't put that as an answer can I :-(

Rob
2:13 PM
lol I gained some rep with a recalc :D
at least on SO, I think I gained 7

@PriceChild leave it As a comment

quite some time ago I had asked Diago to perform a recalc. (this was before I was a Mod). The difference was about 500 rep.
0
Q: Requesting rep recalc

SathyaCan any of the mods please do a rep recalc on my account ? There's a rep difference of about 500 points between the rep on my current profile and the /reputation report, and I'd rather get it down now than have it climb to about 1000 points or so.

@Sathya 500? Wow, quite the drop. I'd hate to watch that get lost :/

although nothing beats @WilliamHilsum hitting 50k rep <s>twice</s> 4 times :P

lol, yeah that was mildly amusing

2:19 PM
Feb 28 at 17:57, by Wil
I am at over 50k AGAIN and unless someone deletes or moves something... my reputation page shows I have only lost 20... so... I am at 50k for the (I think) fourth time!!!

Haha.
I think I like the image in that transcript more

@SimonSheehan must...resist...urge...to...decode...

Rob
lol what
@SimonSheehan, where did that come from?
Ohh didn't realize Sathya's post was a link, heh.

2:39 PM
hi @balpha

hey hey

I don't know why, but I'm laughing at this wayyyyy more than I probably should...

....

....
Brb finding out how to set that as my screensaver

Rob
too many drugs?

2:45 PM
@DarthAndroid better: desktop, tiled.

I never see my desktop :(

now you've got an excuse...

I already have an excuse, my lovely background art!
Doesn't help much though.

Rob
yhello

2:50 PM
Y'all up for a question...?

Rob
That is a question :)
(yes)

How many 100 Watt lamps does it take to test a UPS??

How strong is the UPS?

@Linker3000 light bulb isn't a very good load indicator...

2:52 PM
12 lamp strong
..or how to raise the temp in the server room by 2C in 2 mins...!
@Sathya It was fine for what we were doing - looking at how the UPS monitoring s/w triggered on low/dead batteries.
1.2KW load on a 2KVA UPS

with a pf of ~ 0.6.
@Linker3000 okay.

@Sathya I would have thought closer to unity being mainly resistive - these are all standard tungsten lamps (albeit with some inductance in the coiled filaments).

just curious, what's the UPS going to power?

@Sathya Well, it's really a 'spare' - the server underneath the lamps is running VMware and on that server is a Ubuntu VM running the apcupsd UPS monitoring daemon and I'm testing that the USB port passed through to the VM is signalling properly.
Next step will be for apcupsd to issue a power off command via ILO (the management port on the server) so that VMWare will trigger an ACPI shutdown of all the VMs and itself.
The lamps are used in our manufacturing area as test loads - I didn't have to sit there and wire them all up - just grab the boards from 'next door'.
I reckon we should go for coloured lamps next time and get some music...snacks...

@Linker3000 dj party :p

Rob
3:09 PM
Anyone else read the article on stuxnet?
Reads like a Tom Clancy short :p

@Rob Had a glance.

Rob
Pretty crazy stuff

@Rob I'll stick to my lamps...literally if I get too close to them!

@Rob there was this TED talk
hold on
if you haven't seen this, go watch it now.

Rob
Yea, it's insane
I liked the details in the article on how they hijacked the PLCs and then masked the hardware signals so that operators had no idea
Pretty ridiculous how well the entire thing was put together

3:23 PM
@Rob @Sathya, looks utterly fasicnating, I'll give it a read later on.

Good morning, everyone.

@Rob yep!

Q: My friend's Mac Book Pro isn't working

NING i hope you can help me out because my friends just got a Mac Book Pro recently and it stopped working after a while, this is what happened: she placed the Mac Book Pro on a cooler, after 3 days to a week, the Mac Book Pro froze and had a pop up window that told her to restart her Mac Book Pro. af...

Needs a bit of editing I think. Anyone want to grab it before I get to a computer?

Rob
I would if I had the rep :p

@Rob you can edit it and someone will approve the edit :p

and will net you +2 rep

^ yep. Keep editing and it helps push to that 2k rep for free edits

Rob
Alright I'll do it then :)
Done, once it gets peer reviewed

4:32 PM
@Rob: I approved it ;)

4:42 PM
Again I had to answer my own question by myself
I am disappoint, super users!

the vlc font cache one?

No, wish I had an answer for that one

Q: How can I remove compatibility settings that are not editable from the Compatibility tab?

badpYesterday, Windows decided Steam needed a compatibility setting to run properly and showed me an informative dialog that left me with no choice but to acknowledge this. Steam ran fine, until it needed to be restarted for a beta update. Steam however doesn't like compatibility settings one bit. ...

I hate Xcode. So much.

Rob
Why's that?

It's slow, and it's the only thing you can use for developing Mac apps.
Technically, I could make them with vim and a bunch of the Xcode command-line tools, but that'd be more work than it's worth.

Rob
4:46 PM
That's depressing
Why hasn't someone else developed a decent IDE? (slightly rhetorical)

@Rob: There's vim, which I love.

Rob
Are iOS developers shoe-horned into using Xcode also?

Rob
That seems odd to me, I'm used to writing C from a terminal anyhow
I don't see a technical reason for forcing developers to use Xcode for Obj-C, but then again, I've never written Obj-C
Are makefile's still used?

Nope, it's Xcode's own, weird system.
with build targets and all this other craziness.

Rob
4:50 PM
Wow :/
I lol'd when I heard Apple wants people to pay for their SDK, I'll just make my software for Android thanks

@Sathya I actually do not really understand how our community FAQ works

6:52 PM
@Sathya It was about 5 or 6 in the end I thought!? .... Why not close a few more of my good questions (not just you! :P ) and I can hit it again!

Looks like Linux Kernel 3.0 will be out soon, RC7 was pushed

7:34 PM
@SimonSheehan Apparently it is not so different to warrant a new major versions number as some previous 2.x releases. Looks like they are going for the Firefox/Chrome fashion for major version number changes for minor updates.
I don't like this trend. Like who remembers anything about Chrome v7, v8 or v9, or what changes they brought?
Who is going to remember Firefox 5 or 6 or 7 or 8?

7:59 PM
@paradroid or because we had 2.x for like 6 years and a new number starts fresh... And isn't as confusing yet.

Windows: "You may be the victim of software counterfeiting..."

Me: no Microsoft, it is you who is the victim of software counterfeiting here, not I.

BBC News: "Illegally downloading pirated films is costing hundreds of millions of pounds a year"

Fuck, what site are they downloading them off? It's free for me...

I can't see an end.
I have no control and I don't think there's any escape - I don't even have a home anymore.

Definitely time for a new keyboard.

I currently own a system which is exactly 14 times better than Windows 7.

I call it: Windows 98.

I bought a new iPod the other day, called it 'The Titanic'.
Imagine the shock I got when I tried to put music on it - "The Titanic is syncing!"

Is it just me......

or does anybody else find pressing F5 refreshing?
